We get a lot of email here at Halos Heaven... and while it is always nice to hear from the Angels themselves, this email was pretty much the biggest bummer of the season and 2nd only to the announcement of Rory's death at the beginning of the year.
From The Angels to the blogs, sites, papers and broadcasters:
**MEDIA ADVISORY**
KENDRY MORALES MEDICAL UPDATE
WHO: Angels’ first baseman Kendry Morales sustained an injury to his lower left leg at home plate at the conclusion of today’s game after hitting a game-ending grand slam. He was carted off the field on a stretcher and taken locally for X-rays. Morales will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a corresponding move to be announced.
WHAT: X-rays taken today revealed a fracture of the lower left leg. It was determined that surgery will be required tomorrow (May 30th) with Dr. Phil Kwong performing the procedure (Foot & Ankle Specialist with Kerlan-Jobe Clinic). No timetable has been set for a rehab schedule or his return. The Cuban native was leading the Angels in several offensive categories, including average (.290), home runs (11), total bases (94) and RBI (39). He was on-pace for a career-best 35 home runs and 124 RBI. Morales was the only Angel to appear in all 51 games.

68 games across his minor league career.
Not a whole lot, but hey, better than Q right?
halofan4life - May 29, 2010
He played 36 games at 1B in the minors
But 30 of them were in A-ball or lower. He hasn’t played there regularly since 2004.

Napoli at 1B. Let's do this.
The only realistic option is Napoli at first base.
Wood sucks. Trumbo isn’t ready. I’m not excited about Rivera at 1B with Willits in LF full time either.

Isn't there some obscure rule
(that obviously is never enforced) about not touching a player until he has crossed the plate? Maybe it was an old rule that they got rid of? For some reason I seem to remember hearing some crazy old curmudgeon, ranting about ‘players these days’, showing of, admiring homeruns and such and mentioning this rule. if not, perhaps it should be a rule.
Wow, this sucks a lot.

who’s going to take 1st base. I would say Q is most likely, but maybe Sosh will start getting Nap more comfortable at 1st until Mathis gets back. Then maybe Napoli at 1st, Mathis/ Wilson catching?
phoenix15 - May 29, 2010
Is Kendry definetly done for the season? To me it sounds like he is done for a while but not the whole season crossin my fingers
Angelsrthebest101 - May 29, 2010
It’s probably going to depend on what they see when they operate AND how quickly he heals.
angelsfan7 - May 29, 2010
REALLY?
Vladd#27 - May 29, 2010
by the time he gets back the season will pretty much be over

Unless its more then a fracture, and that he’s still young, at most should be 1-2 months.
phoenix15 - May 29, 2010
I can take 1-2 months
As long as Q isn’t the answer
Anaheim71420 - May 29, 2010 via mobile
I don't think they usually do surgery for a simple fracture.
Maybe it’s different with pro players, but surgery is usually for compound fractures which are a whole different animal and take longer to heal.
opiejeanne - May 29, 2010
It's starting to feel like Juan's injury a few years ago.
halofan4life - May 29, 2010

And made it back in August 2007 (playing in AAA, back in the majors for September).
If that’s the timetable, no more Kowbell until spring training 2011.
RallyMonkey5 - May 29, 2010
Injuries happen
We never really expected to go through the season without one or two setbacks. The rest of the AL West has had large injuries as well.
The Angels need to pick themselves up from this, close out this series with a win and continue playing sound fundamental baseball.
Prayers go out to Kendry for a speedy recovery. Now lets take this division and win a championship.

From what I remember seeing on TV, Wood is probably a pretty damned good 1Bman.
That doesn’t solve his hitting woes.
He’s still got a total of 15 days on the DL before he can come back. If he hits, great! If not, we’ve definitely got a trade before 7/31………….(probably have one anyway).
Let’s not panic…..I see Napoli batting #4…………..Rivera #5…………Frandsen’s gonna get a shot at proving his worth…………his last hope to become a regular major leaguer…..it may work.

Conger batting .371 over the past two weeks at Salt Lake.
With a .476 OBP and an OPS of 1.076. Has the only hit so far on the Bees vs Fresno tonight.
I’m with the fellas that say put Naps at first. Conger and Wilson behind the plate until Mathis is back.
Give Kid Conger a chance.
Turks Teeth - May 29, 2010
the kid is blazin HOT!!
mastermind565 - May 29, 2010
Not only is he blazing hot, all trends are going in the right direction.
With 20 Ks against 20 BBs, his strikeout rate is the lowest in his career, and his walk rate is at its peak. He’s also catching reasonably well.
Turks Teeth - May 29, 2010
One thing that might come outta this
is the renewed fire from the other Angels. This is the 1st real injury this year with a star player.
phoenix15 - May 29, 2010
Try and stay POSITIVE dudes and dudettes...
The Angels have succeeded before in the face of adversity. Our 15 game winning streak last season came without Vlad and partially without Torii…we can do this.
AND DONT FORGET…we play in the AL West!
Somebody call Trumbo!
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - May 29, 2010
Trade for someone
possibly trade for a guy like russell branyan or some one even like paul konerko, even though konerko would be harder to get i saw its worth it now.
Halofan4ever - May 29, 2010
Maybe we can trade Wood for Texiera.
opiejeanne - May 29, 2010
Do the Angels
have any 1B prospects that could replace Kendry? (Sorry, Cubs fan here, not informed on the Halo system…)
Hilary Lee - May 29, 2010
Not really if you stick to first base.
Trumbo is in AAA, but not everyone is sold on him. Quinlan (gag) is about it. Napoli hasn’t touched 1B since ‘04 in the minors, but it’s an outside the box idea that keeps a big bat in the lineup.
halofan4life - May 29, 2010
Mark Trumbo is
he has 11 or 12 HR right now in Triple-A witch is 1st or 2nd in the league
but the Angels are stupid and will most likely call upp Quinlan
Vladd#27 - May 29, 2010
they would call up quinlan to not burn a option on Trumbo...
and deflate his confidence as he tries to battle big league pitching.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - May 29, 2010
Nor do they want Conger as a Super 2
Especially now that Wood will be 1B when he returns
Rev Halofan - May 29, 2010
Im all in for Napoli
getting his share of 1st base when Mathis gets back. Another option could be Rivera at 1st, then Ryan at LF. There was another former OF Angel that became a gold glove 1st baseman after Spezio left.
phoenix15 - May 29, 2010
Well, this is failure exemplified.
goes to drop Kendry for FLBThat being said, I really want to see Naps get some time at 1st. Wood’s still injured, Q sucks, and Conger can get some time up here to see if he can handle it.

what a way to go
We can survive this. No 1 player is worth more than a few wins per season.
But we need to get a real hitter at first pronto.
elricsi - May 29, 2010
Quick thoughts
1. Wood – Lazarus like – is next in the depth chart for 1B. So we’re back to square one with him. Hoping for production. This could kill us if he doesn’t start hitting. On the plus side, Izturis should be made our starting 3Bman.
2. Trumbo is our AAA 1B but his peripherals and hitting stats (outside of HR’s) aren’t that good. I wouldn’t be adverse to him being given a (platoon perhaps?) shot.
3. Conger is our best hitting AAA guy. If he was to be brought up it would probably require Napoli being moved to 1B. Don’t know how willing Scioscia would be to do that.
4. We’ll see more of Frandsen, Ryan and Quinlan picking up starts here and there. I think people are getting ahead of themselves if they think Quinlan will be a starting 1B’man. If he hits well and Wood continues to struggle, then maybe things will change.
5. Outide of the box would be shifting Rivera to 1B, and bringing up Bourjos/Willits into LF. This would have more believability if Bourjos wasn’t slumping at AAA.
There are two ways to deal with an event like this. You use it to light a fire up your ass and press on (as we did with the Adenhart situation last year) or you let it consume you and feel sorry for yourself. Angel teams under Scioscia have historically shown plenty of character, and if there is ever a time for character, now would be perfect. We still have a good team. It’s just been underperforming and not clicking. But this division is still up for grabs big time. And I would wager that the team that wins the AL West it is the one that rallies around themselves and comes together. We have shown a fighting spirit before, let’s do it again.

I was thinking about how long it took Juan Rivera to recover...
after he broke his leg in Winterball a couple of years ago. He also had surgery, and there were metal screws/plates (aka hardware) installed in his leg. His recovery was what, 4-5 months? Longer maybe? I would wager that Kendry is gonna have some hardware installed in his leg too. That is not conducive to a quick or short recovery, and honestly, who wants to see him rush back and re-injure it.
Rest of the team is gonna have to step it up, and quickly.
hbhalofan - May 29, 2010
Wasn't Juan the upper leg (thigh)?
red floyd - May 30, 2010
I'm reposting this write-up. Partly due to a couple of amendments. But mostly to offset all the #@!$*!
It is quite understandable that people are very upset. Due to strong emotions, people’s reactionary response is: "SEASON OVER!".
Assuming K-Mo will miss the rest of 2010. Trying to quantify what was lost:
While the Angels almost certainly won’t be able to replace K-Mo’s production, 1B is one of the easier positions to fill. Maybe Napoli gets more ABs as a 1B, maybe Trumbo is called up, or the Angels trade for somebody like Branyan. The important thing to remember is that there are options. It should also be noted that K-Mo was on pace for a 3 WAR season (meaning an additional 2 WAR during June-September). If we assume the Angels find a replacement level 1B (i.e. 0 WAR untl the end of the season), essentially this means 2 fewer wins. Granted, in a weak AL West this could mean the difference between finishing first or second.

Pitching/Defense: 11th worst FIP and the most runs given up in the AL
As the above notes, there are several areas where the team could realistically show improvement. With or without K-Mo, the Angels would NOT have won the AL West if they continue to be last in the AL in runs surrendered.
It is time for Mike Scioscia to challenge the entire team to pick up the slack.

I say it again - we're probably done this year, so act accordingly
People wanted to talk shit on me for being drunk earlier and so forth when I said this, and yes, I’m still drunk in celebration of my birthday, but quite honestly – look at this team for a minute. The majority of it has been under siege for well over a year now. From Nick’s death and everything that happened in ‘09 to now with Kendry’s injury. Eventually the armor was going to crack and it appears that time has arrived in earnest. None of us could perform any better under similar conditions and we should be proud of our boys for holding up this long.
Can the Angels still put up a fight? Yes. Will they? Yes. Did the FO basically fuck us to the point that any serious injury like this would derail us completely? – It sure looks that way, doesn’t it? As a fan since I was younger than I can remember, and one who knows what the 90’s were like, it’s time to accept that the Rangers might possibly be taking our division crown this year and promptly losing it to the Yankees it the first round like they always do. Kendry was the closest thing we had to Superman and we’ve got nobody to replace him.
Go ahead and rip me, but I know the majority of you feel the same as I do. If I was still in the Marine Corps and this team was under my command, all of them would be sprinting up hills right now with full packs until I got tired of watching them because of this final play today and several others. This team and it’s fan base needs to stop acting like it’s entitled to win and and prepare for the future.
As a diehard, but a realist at the same time, be prepared for a bridge year. We have plenty of money coming off the books this winter and Tampa is probably going to win anyways. Look forward to 2011 and consider everything else this year to be good fortune.
Commander_Nate - May 29, 2010
I would never rip you
However, bottom line it’s about pitching and defense. Look at the Phillies last 6 or 7 games. All those sluggers and they still can’t score.
We have a pretty good pitching staff. I think we will get better as the season progresses. I believe we still have an offense that can score 5 runs per game.
Mathis is coming back soon.
And don’t forget, we still have Mike (Sosh or Soth). He ain’t too bad either.
vladtheimpaler - May 29, 2010
as long as Weav, Santana, and Pinero stay productive.

SenorChuckles - May 29, 2010
You wish you could piss me off...
I was just wishing you a good summer since you’ve “signed off” like 8 times already! ;)
Downing Rules - May 29, 2010
HA! I'm just signing off on the season, not fandom
I just see black sails in the sunset and want everyone to be properly prepared.
Commander_Nate - May 29, 2010
Put a skull and crossbones on those black sails...
I, of all the pessimists, believe our team can do this, man.
Downing Rules - May 29, 2010
You're a good fan, Nate & will be back soon if not by tomorrow
Whenever the Halos universe turns to shit, there’s no better place to hang than here with your Halos brothers & sisters.

Tomorrow I officially hit the Quarter Century mark
If I’m here past noonish, I have shitty friends. ;) Although, calling me when I’m in the midst of a 4 hour sloshball game to give me news of the grand slam broken ankle is kinda shitty too…
But what are friends for, right?
Commander_Nate - May 29, 2010
for the record Nathan....
You were “Stoked” when I told you that Morales hit the grand slam. In fact, I believe you said “that just made my day.”
CarnivalLights - May 30, 2010
well
me and you share a birthday anyway. I still think we have a chance
ryanfea - May 29, 2010
I'm not sure how the FO screwed us...
Figgins is a disaster this year. Re-signing him would have been even worse than playing Wood because we’d have a lousy hitting 3b under an expensive 4 year contract.
Lackey is stinking it up in Boston with an ERA of almost 5.00. He’s no better than Pineiro and costs twice as much for over twice as long.
Vlad and Oliver would be nice to have I suppose. Kazmir is really underwhelming but SR isn’t doing anything over in Tampa either.
This team needs help but it needs more than 1 or 2 signings to make it great again.

Halopauly - May 30, 2010
Is it just me
Or is this season reminding anyone else of 2003? Get well soon, Kendry! Gawd, will we miss you.
TSamn15 - May 29, 2010
No, not just you
Especially since I spent most of the 03 season doing pushups and marching through dirt. Apparently I didn’t miss much that year.
Commander_Nate - May 29, 2010
reminds me of 99
ankle bummer on the 1Bman
Rev Halofan - May 29, 2010
Is Kendry Morales still the panther of the game?
I did’nt see a poll up. I vote for Kendry anyway.

Now
the 2010 season’s going to be hard for the Angels, but not impossible to get 1st. Offensively, IF Wood starts hitting for real after his DL, Rivera and Matsui start heating up, they can carry the team without Kendry. Vlad was the best hitter on the team last year, but the Angels still got through without him hitting well. I think a lot might rest with Wood. He does have potential to somewhat fill the hole without Kendry. If Mathis keeps his hitting streak going, pitching staff gets their stuff together.
phoenix15 - May 29, 2010
So our GM's response to this....
is to call up a guy with a a 645 OPS in AAA…. Call up Budde and use Bobby Wilson as the backup 1B/3B over Q, and I’m dead serious too, Wilson can actually hit a bit.
MH252525 - May 29, 2010
they have this crazy theory
that losing our best offensive player doesn’t need fixing, it just means that Scioscia can get his favorite more playing time.
I’d give Napoli or whoever is the hottest in aaa a shot before Quinlan. Quinlan hasn’t done anything to deserve a chance. Did squat in spring training, squat in his limited role this season, squat in aaa, and jack shit last year and the year before. f him

Your name says it all…I just can’t stomach watching that ugly hack of his

neochoa - May 29, 2010
just in time for our playoff run :D
SenorChuckles - May 29, 2010
Nah
Done for the season. 10 -12 weeks until he can get back on it maybe.Won’t be able to run on it properly until then. Shit is gonna hurt like the mother* for awhile after that.
eyespy - May 29, 2010
We can rebuild him , make him stronger .....Kendry will come back
bigger and stronger than the six million dollar man ….
Ed@northridge - May 29, 2010
I'm wondering who will be the Angel reps in this year's All Star Game
Weaver is a given (he’d have more wins if it weren’t for lack of a bullpen), but beyond that Kendry was the only other one who had a pretty solid chance. No way he’s back on the field by then. I hope Naps stays hot and gets in as a reserve catcher maybe.
If not, it would be kinda sad to have only one representative in the game in our own house. And with our luck, Weav wouldn’t even get in the game ala Chuck Finley.
RedHatHalo - May 29, 2010
Torii Hunter
will join him there
ryanfea - May 29, 2010
It should be only Weaver.
No others deserve it. Maybe Naps as Mauer’s backup if he can keep this power surge going.
Torii is not one of the top OFs in the AL an doesn’t deserve to be there.

Picked a hell of a day to visit
Today I made it to a home game for the first time in three years. I live in Boston. I haven’t visited LA during baseball season since 2007. Maicer Izturis hit a grand slam in the last game I went to, so watching Kendry’s ball leave the yard I thought, awesome, I am the ultimate good-luck charm. All I have to do is show up and someone will hit a slam. The fans were nuts. It was a really great moment.
Maybe I haven’t had enough shock and disappointment in my life, but I can’t remember my emotions completely reversing themselves over such a brief period of time. There were a few moments of confusion in the seats when the party at the plate didn’t continue the way it should have. Then the phones started coming out as people called their friends watching on TV. I couldn’t tell for certain who was down until the pile cleared after several minutes, but it was one of those moments where you just know the worst thing possible has happened but keep hoping you’ll be wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn’t. No one moved until the cart had left the field. The march out of the stadium was like a funeral procession.
What a terrible way to win a game. It’s been a hell of a day.
Suboptimal - May 29, 2010
You will always have a story to tell...
I was there on opening day when Mo Vaughn made his debut and stepped into the dugout in his first game after signing for big FA $’s. Missed most of the season.
grahams98 - May 29, 2010
i was there too
we won that game as well and left so bummed
Rev Halofan - May 29, 2010
I was also there that day
worst Free Agent sign ever
ryanfea - May 29, 2010
Thanks
for sharing that. I was wondering what it was like for our fans that were there today. Let’s hope you’ll be back at the stadium in the future for Morales’ next grand slam! I believe. :-)
NJinHB - May 29, 2010
yeah it was a sick feeling at Angels Stadium today
you could hear a pin drop once the trainers came out and they brought out the stretcher.
ryanfea - May 29, 2010
yup.
I couldn’t see him, but I immediately knew it was K-Mo, just looking for all the other starters. The only one missing was Kendry.
Figgi4life - May 30, 2010
Im so bummed out
right now about K-Mo that even the thought of Tim Salmon naked aint helping me.
TSamn15 - May 29, 2010
is it odd that the thought of that helped me?
norcaliangelsfan - May 29, 2010
Depends.
opiejeanne - May 29, 2010
Uh, depends on what you mean by "helped"
if you mean that it made you start laughing uncontrollably, it helped me too.
TheKingfish - May 30, 2010
LMFAO
I missed the “naked” part of the original post. Yours just made me recheck it, and I laughed. Hard.
Figgi4life - May 30, 2010
rec'd
Maybe this is the solution to all our problems.
ryanfea - May 29, 2010
I realize I'm still in shock.
It hasn’t registered that Kendry Morales broke his leg CELEBRATING A WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM I don’t want to wake up tomorrow.
Figgi4life - May 29, 2010
I just woke up thinking, "What a weird nightmare I had..."
Downing Rules - May 30, 2010
On the bright side...
The new kids in the bullpen have looked really good…of course they were pitching to a AAA line-up.
