Final Score in St. Louis: Angels 5, Cardinals 9
When Joel Pineiro cannot throw his sinker, his pitching produces a stinker like this one. Practically the polar opposite of his masterful Complete Game shutout last Sunday afternoon, the Angels righty only lasted 3 innings, allowed 9 runs and was humiliated by his former teammates.
The difference for Pineiro Friday night in the muggy midwest was that his sinkerball was not getting down and Cardinals batters were able to sit on what amounted to fat low fastballs, blasting out 9 hits in the 21 Plate Appearances they had against Pineiro.
Cardinals starter Brad Penny hit a first pitch fastball for a grand slam with 2 outs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to break open a 4-4 tie... and while the Angels bats showed up early, they could not pile on that many runs in the 6 remaining innings.
Torii Hunter had 2 hits to stay hot and Mike Napoli hit a 2-Run HR and a double, but the flash flood of runs produced early had to have been demoralizing.
Checking the standings: The Angels are right where they were in the AL West before play began a week ago: 5.5 games behind Texas. Sadly, they got to within 2.5 games of first place in the division earlier this week but could not make anything of it.

Horrible - just horrible
not much else to say…I wish we were a .500 team…
Halopauly - May 21, 2010
All i have to say if damn Texas.
They get all the teams that have bad pitching/ hitting while the Angels get the NL team that has Pujols in it. I don’t know if this stat is right, but in the AL West, Texas has the easiest schedule, then the Athletics, Mariners, then one of the hardest schedules in baseball, the Angels. It’s like MLB wants the Halos to lose the AL West this year with this super tough schedule.
phoenix15 - May 21, 2010
I know Texas has the easiest interleague schedule, not sure about overall though
~MMP~ - May 21, 2010
overall too
Texas has like the 3rd easiest schedule in all the majors so far.
phoenix15 - May 21, 2010
it balances out in the end.
firebird81 - May 21, 2010
once again
the offense is good enough to win and pitching lets us down. and the next game someone will throw a 2 run CG and we will score 1 run. can’t put a full game together.
NW angels Fan - May 21, 2010
Then the next game
we’ll lose on 3 errors.
Rally Manatee - May 22, 2010
BARF
Brad Penny. A PITCHER did something Brandon Wood is unlikely to EVER DO in his career.

brutal.
Rev – couple of typos — 2nd paragraph “Appearnces” and 4th paragraph “orf”
though “orf” is the sound i made after penny’s slam.

Granted I only saw the first two innings and then had to leave
but it’s typical that an Angels starter in his bad start gives up 9 runs. Penny was looking equally shitting but they have actually have someone sitting on the bench making these things called….. ugh… I dunno….. decisons!!!!!!!!! It was painfully obvious even in the two innings I saw Joel that he looked like crap. You really have to let him let the game get away when you did the same exact thing in Detroit to start the last roadtrip. Soth is brutal when it comes to bullpen usage.
And really it had no value in letting him go that far. I mean there are two choices…. that actually make sense.
A) take the starter out when you know he’s got nothing
or
B) let him eat innings when you know he doesn’t have it so that the bullpen doesn’t have to throw like 5 innings.
What does Soth do….???
He chooses option C like a #%!@# moron and lets the pitcher who looks like crap let the game get out of hand, and then as soon as its out of hand and it would actually start to make sense to keep him out there just to let him eat innings what does he do? He takes him out and has the bullpen throw 5 shutout innings.
If this guy managed an East Coast team they’d be eating him alive for just for how Fuentes is the closer when his OPS against lefties is insanely good. Instead he throws against whoever is up in the 9th and with the opposing manager being able to use pinch-hitters at will. Now that might be something he needs to do if we didn’t have someone that has already proven he can close by only having 1 BS all of last year…. But nah…… he couldn’t possibly close for the Angels thus moving Fuentes into a role he might be good at……

man I have horrible grammar when I'm angry
you wouldn’t know it from reading that diatribe but I actually earned A’s in my writing classes at UCI. I know it’s no CSUF though. I wish I would have gone there like our GM……

Don't forget
College of the Desert, for a AA degree.
Soth is an illusion. The managerial position is an illusion. Just do a little pep talk and stay the F out of the way. These guys lose games at a far greater click than they win games.
However, that g-slam by penny was pretty f’n ridiculous.
clover_black - May 21, 2010
A Sosh rant from MHTwos-n-Fives?
Wow, didn’t see that comin’.
Much.
LAASurfin - May 22, 2010
well do you agree or disagree
Do you like taking out your starter only once he has given up NINE runs…….? Larussa managed to take out Penny much earlier than that……
Do you like having your reliever who gets out lefties the best, only face them if they happen to come up in the 9th…..?
MH252525 - May 22, 2010
LaRussa took Penny out because he was injured
~MMP~ - May 22, 2010
still there is no way he lets him give up 9 runs.....
MH252525 - May 22, 2010
The pitcher's spot in the order was up.
I think Sloth was hoping he’d last so he could pinch hit for him without having to “waste” a relief pitcher to close out the inning. He should have pulled Assjoel before he loaded the bases, it was obvious by then he didn’t have it.
Fred Fredrix - May 22, 2010
I don't always disagree
And sometimes even find your Sosh ‘insights’ well-considered and thought provoking. It’s the relentlessness of them that gets irksome.
LAASurfin - May 22, 2010
Hey PhiSamma!
ha ha ha , still think Pineiro is a better than Lackey?
Another great night for Brandon Wood!
Napoli’s hitting the ball far which is nice.
Wally's World - May 21, 2010
both sucked today... ill take the cheaper one
BigBangRobbDawgg - May 21, 2010
Agreed
Lackey hasn’t been any better than Pineiro this year, but at least he gets paid more and Boston is stuck with him for longer than the Angels are tied to Pineiro. Oh, and Lackey’s a jackass.
jjackflash - May 21, 2010
CG shutout last start ?
clover_black - May 21, 2010
Pineiro is the second coming of Jon Garland.
Lackey meanwhile has proven that he is indeed an Ass, one that can ptich in the big game. Do you’all REALLY want to see Pineiro start in the PS?
Wally's World - May 22, 2010
Oh god, best typo ever.
~MMP~ - May 22, 2010
And Lackey has been downright awful this season.
~MMP~ - May 22, 2010

2011 Draft here we come!
jk, but that was truly brutal to watch.

Brad Penny...
The Pitcher Brad Penny?
R.I.P. Halos !
Funke5ive - May 21, 2010
Maybe he got a prescription from Ankiel's "miracle doctor."
Downing Rules - May 21, 2010
So does Floyd Landis.
That would explain Penny going all Mike Hampton on us.
halofolife - May 21, 2010
Yeah, it's looking bad for the season...
chairmanofthebar - May 22, 2010
Lost in the horror of this game
Trevor Bell’s nice 3 innings with no runs, only 1 hit, and 4 k’s.
Scot Shields pitched well too.
Raaddad - May 22, 2010
Angels
Its time for us to start looking to trade up for some people-Big mistake losing Vladdy-Look at my past posts-Last year I said sign him for 3 years at 5 million per and he would have done it—He will hit 30 HRs 100 RBIs 320 BA this year and next-That would have been very cheap! Now we need at least one hitter and one pitcher too! I did think Wood would do better and he still might but he is not looking good at all 157BA? Figgy and Vlady gone? Big Big loss-I still like the Angels front office alot-They just blew it with those two-The whole team has a different look and it just wont work without a couple of changes
spc7 - May 22, 2010
Not to beat the "Wood" horse but damn is there a worse 3rd baseman in the league?
Or maybe we can find one on the planet (besides myself that is). He has a line drive pop off his glove, then in another brilliant Wood play he tries to barehand the throw from the cut off man which would have been an out at 3rd. I think opposing teams ar actually trying to pull the ball figuring he is a walking, talking, error about to happen. Hitting the ball towards him is 50/50 you’ll be on base.
steelgolf - May 22, 2010
I think the ball he tried to barehand hit the runner, like the one with Torii earlier on
~MMP~ - May 22, 2010
And his glove remained motionless the whole time.
Commander_Nate - May 22, 2010
Thanks Joel...........
for making me look like a fool for backing you up the other day…………jerk.

"Brad Penny hit a first pitch fastball"
That clocked in at 83mph. If that pitch was a fastball, then Pineiro is headed for the DL. For sure, it was a breaking pitch that flattened out. It just had a tiny lilt to it that said, “Here I am! Hit me as far as you like!” Pineiro underestimated Penny plain and simple. Of course, it wrecked Penny’s body to swing that hard, but it got the win.
Well, it’s getting pretty close to June, and we’re still dismal. Nothing to blame it on either except poor performance. No tragedies. Few injuries. All the off season FA moves made sense, even if unpopular. If Izzy weren’t on the DL, he may have saved us a couple losses with good D and clutch hitting, but he wouldn’t make our bullpen any better.
Not being pessimistic here, but I really don’t think there is much we can do other than hope they put it all together somehow before it’s too late. As I said in another post, I don’t think any major trades are possible this year. We don’t have the pieces. We’ve just got to grit it out this season, and take what we get. Who knows, maybe we can still win the wildcard with a mediocre team, although the Yanks look like a shoo-in there.
Rally Manatee - May 22, 2010
Ya, it wasn't a fastball
~MMP~ - May 22, 2010
"I left a hanging slider to Penny," Pineiro said.
