Angels Take Two In Chicago, St. Louis Next.  Halolinks.

Santana helps shut down White Sox -  Sporting News
Ervin Santana pitched seven solid inning, Juan Rivera hit a two-run homer and the Los Angeles Angels held on to beat the struggling Chicago White Sox 6-5 on Thursday night. After watching his fellow relievers give up four runs in the eighth inning, Fuentes pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in eight opportunities. "I'm always ready to come into the game, because things can change in hurry," Fuentes said. Kendry Morales had three hits and drove in two runs for the Angels who have won five of seven. But the Angels escaped after nearly blowing a big lead. Santana (3-3) didn't have any problems with the White Sox, who came into the game with the worst batting average in baseball at .230. He allowed one unearned run on seven hits. He struck out six and pitched around three walks. "I never lost my focus today," Santana said. "I concentrated a lot more than before. I was trying to make it simple and keep the ball down, because I know the ball carries here and they have great power hitters." Jake Peavy (3-3) was tagged for six runs and eight hits. He struck out eight and walked two.

Player quotes often confuse me.  Santana says he concentrated a lot more.  Does that mean sometimes he's out on the mound thinking about the previous night's episode of "Lost"?  Or what he's going to have for dinner instead of, I don't know, maybe what pitch to throw?  And I love Fuentes' quote, "I'm always ready to come into the game, because things can change in hurry".  I'm sure he's talking about things changing before he gets in the game, but I read it as how things can change after he comes into the game and starts walking guys, or throwing pitches to the screen.   How about this highlight - Rivera blasts a two-run shot - Juan Rivera smashes a two-run shot to extend the Angels' lead in the top of the sixth inning

Angels-Cardinals Preview - 5/21/10 - FOX Sports on MSN
Now pitching for the Los Angeles Angels, Pineiro will kick off interleague play by facing his former team Friday night in St. Louis, where Penny looks to bounce back from his worst start of 2010. He's been living up to that contract lately, tossing 15 1-3 shutout innings in his last two starts. Pineiro pitched a four-hitter in a 4-0 win over Oakland on Sunday for his first shutout with the Angels. "I was getting ahead in the count and was able to get a lot of groundball outs," Pineiro said. "Everybody knows the sinker is my pitch. So if I keep it down, hopefully it's going to get good results." Penny, like Pineiro a 31-year-old, made an unsuccessful foray into the AL last year, posting a 5.61 ERA in 24 starts with Boston after his 2008 season had been cut short by shoulder problems. He finished the year by pitching well for San Francisco, however, then signed with St. Louis. Although he has lost four straight outings, Penny (3-4, 2.73) began the year with seven consecutive quality starts before allowing seven runs and 13 hits in five innings of a 7-2 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday.

Some more on the Lasordapalooza display at the Pomona Public Library that we visited in today's column, and included a winning art entry by Greg Jezewski of Los Angeles -- Tommy Lasorda kneeling at the gates of heaven being denied entrance and sent to a fiery resolution.  Because God is a Giants' fan.

1992 - Four members of the California Angels, including manager Buck Rodgers, are hospitalized after the bus carrying the team swerves into a row of trees off the New Jersey Turnpike. Rodgers, the most seriously injured, incurs a broken right rib, left knee and right elbow. John Wathan takes over the team as interim manager.

How is Brad Penny's ERA that low?
Dave Duncan is magic
He's not walking anyone

And he’s only been taken out of the park 3 times. Gotta love the National League.

I think it's great that we won but this bullpen really concerns me.

Let’s say we’re in the playoffs holding a 2 run lead and our starter gives up a walk and single in the top of the 7th.

Who do I feel comfortable handing the ball to? Bell-no, jepson-not relly, shields-not really, one of our starters on short rest-yes!

Things may change by the end of the season but I really hope it happens sooner because we can’t win close playoff series with these guys in my opinion.

And I don’t think it’s too early to, “even talk about the playoffs.” We got a good squad here and our record doesn’t reflect it but it’ll show once our guys in slumps heat up, and if our starting rotation stays this consistent.

Jepsen has been really good so far, he's had 2 bad outings that have inflated his stats quite a bit
15 IP, 1.60 WHIP, 16 hits, 10 R (all earned), 8BB, 17K's

those must have been some pretty bad outings.

They were.

The first one was in Boston: 0.2 IP, 2 hits, 3 walks, 4 ER

And then last night: 0.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 K, 4 ER

That combined 1.1 innings makes up 5 hits, 4 walks, 1 K, and 8 of his 10 ER

Forget the playoffs. Suppose we're in an honest to goodness pennant race in October?

And we need to rely on our bullpen.

Yup. And that's what scary. I don't trust any of these guys in a pressure situation

especially when they seem to be getting behind in every count and trying to strike people out with a 92 mph fastball over the plate belt high.

I'm not being a pessimist,

But a realist. I have zero faith in our BP as it now stands. Forget the playoffs, were screwed if we need to rely on our bully in a pennant race later in the season. It’s been proven, even with a big lead, our BP will find a way to blow it.

Agree.

And it was sadly predictable before the season even started. Lots of relievers with high career or recent season WHIPs = setting the stage for disaster.

There are no pennant races in October.
Season Ends October 3rd

Yeah, as Angels fans we haven’t had to sweat the last series of the season. How would you like to have that series come down to the bullpen.

Understand your point though, its probably more fair to say that the “Pennant Race” is September

I like the designated hitter

But for entertainment value, I definitely also enjoy watching pitcher’s hit.

I just enjoy watching Weaver stand in the batter's box

How is it entertaining to watch pitchers hit? You know how everyone hates watching Wood’s ABs? Well it’s like that, only the pitchers have a better chance to make contact.

I like watching pitchers who are good at hitting hit, but that happens very rarely these days. Let’s avoid the potential injuries to pitchers and just have hitters do the hitting.

Good point

If the Angels get Izturis back soon, they really won’t be missing much by having a pitcher hitting 9th instead of Brandon Wood.

The offense should be made up of offensive players

You don’t see Quarterbacks and Kickers in the Defensive Line in the NFL because they suck at defense.

The DH is the same concept.

Better hope Casey's Kiss of Death doesn't see this.

He’ll babble on for days about how the DH has ruined baseball. And yet he’s an Angels fan!?!

I'd love to get CKOD and SP7 in the same room.

Sp7 says: “BRINGG THE DH TO THE NATINUL LEGGUE!”
CKOD says: “F&*$ you and your DH.”

I have a friend who is a Giants fan that argues with me about this all the time

I’m not scurred.

The DH also gives the manager to entertain some interesting strategy

The manager can employ double switches and engage in other forms of lineup manipulation.

Who hit that grand slam a while back?

Was that Felix Hernandez or Zambrano? Hate ‘em both but that was awesome o’clock

this bullpen....

If God is a Giants fan

what does that make us?

I think God was a Halo's fan in 02
