Hunter, Saunders lead Angels past White Sox, 3-2 - Sporting News
Hunter homered for the third time in three games Wednesday night and the Los Angeles Angels, despite getting only three hits, beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2. Hunter hit a two-run homer to back Joe Saunders, who allowed one run and four hits in 7 2-3 strong innings. Saunders struck out four and walked two. Last Friday, he pitched his second career shutout and beat Oakland. "It was good to see a follow-up," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He was terrific tonight. He's pitching much like he did at the end of last year."
Saunders looked fantastic last night and I'm almost ready to believe he's back to the level that he showed at the end of last season (5-0 in Sept.Oct with an ERA of 2.89 in 6 starts). Only thing that concerned me about his outing was his strike-to-ball ratio. After 100 pitches he had thrown 56 strikes and 44 balls, not the greatest ratio when you're trying to get ahead of hitters. Whatever, it worked, and Saunders is now the Angels second best pitcher. Here are the highlights...Joe Saunders limits the White Six to one run in 7 2/3 innings with four strikeouts en route to the win - Saunders hurls 7 2/3 frames of one-run ball. Torii Hunter hits a two-run homer to left to give the Angels their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning - Hunter hits a two-run homer in the fourth. Brian Fuentes strikes out Alexei Ramirez to end the game, giving the Angels a 3-2 win (okay, sure...he struck out Ramirez to end the game, but wow, did he look crappy before that) - Fuentes fans Ramirez to end the game.
Angels-White Sox Preview - 5/20/10 - FOX Sports on MSN
Peavy (3-2, 5.37 ERA) was originally scheduled to pitch Friday against Florida, but manager Ozzie Guillen decided to move him up to avoid left-handers John Danks and Mark Buehrle pitching consecutive games against the same team. Since going 0-2 with a 7.85 ERA in his first five starts, Peavy is 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA in May. After Joe Saunders allowed a run in 7 2-3 innings to help the Angels avoid a third straight loss Wednesday, Santana looks to build on his first victory since April 18. The right-hander gave up three runs and struck out six in six innings of a 12-3 win over Oakland on Saturday. "It's very comfortable when you get run support," Santana told the Angels' official website. "You get more confident, more comfortable." Santana is 3-2 with a 5.18 ERA in eight starts versus the White Sox.
I'm going to make a bold prediction...Jake Peavy will be traded this July and the Angels will be in the thick of trade talks. Okay, that's probably not so bold, but I don't have much faith in Kazmir turning his season around and Peavy would be an excellent replacement. Moving Kazmir to the pen and reducing Fuentes' role to a situational lefty would deepen the reliever corps. A Fuentes-Jepsen-Kazmir-Rodney final four would be sick...in a good way.

Shaky Brian Fuentes saves it for Angels, Joe Saunders - latimes.com
Saunders is certainly finding a groove. The left-hander who stumbled through his first six starts gave up four hits and one run in 7 2/3 innings and has compiled an earned-run average of 0.81 over his last three starts. The Angels backed Saunders (3-5) with only three hits, but one was Torii Hunter's two-run homer in the fourth inning that provided a 2-1 lead. They added a run in the eighth when Juan Rivera singled and eventually scored when third baseman Jayson Nix made a fielding error and a throwing error on the same play. Hunter has hit a home run in three consecutive games for the first time since he homered in four consecutive games from Aug. 23-26, 2006. He gave partial credit for his power surge to his recent switch from No. 3 in the batting order to the cleanup spot. "I think that's more me, the four hole," he said. "I'm able to swing the bat a little harder and go out there and have some fun."
I don't get Hunter's comment about swinging the bat harder in the four-hole. Why could he swing the bat hard when he bats third? Is batting third that much different than fourth, especially later in the game? Hunter's role has always been that of a run producer rather than the guy who hits behind a runner to move him over, etc. Whatever, if Hunter's more confident batting cleanup, cool.
Scioscia: no change at third - ESPN Los Angeles
For now, Scioscia said, Izturis will remain the backup to Wood, shortstop Erick Aybar and second baseman Howie Kendrick. Izturis has begun a throwing program and the team envisions activating him from the 15-day disabled list early next week. "It’s not really a utility role because he's going to be playing somewhere every day," Scioscia said. "It's a versatility role. He'll be playing four to five games a week. If he can hold up and do that, that gives our team a huge offensive boost."
I can't imagine what it'd be like to be Scioscia's kid if he used the same loyalty/blindness as he does with the club. "Hey dad, I got in a wreck with the car again, oops."
"Don't worry son, you'll do better tomorrow."

Say no to Peavy
He’s a good pitcher, but not as good as he looked in the San Diego pitcher’s paradise. He will be paid 33 million dollars the next two years, plus a 4 million buyout. He’s not THAT good a pitcher.
Only way it makes any sense is if Chicago helps us out by taking Kazmir in the trade.
RallyMonkey5 - May 20, 2010
I love Peavy
just may be a little to pricey. But if we can get him for nothing why not??
Also, Fuentes man, geeze louise! Almost gave up another one, and he must average one HR against per outing. Lol, but Jepsen was warming up a little quicker than usual. Looks like Sosh is maybe getting a tighter leash!
angelskid2210 - May 20, 2010
We won't get him for nothing though

I know.... :(
angelskid2210 - May 20, 2010
maybe Chi-town needs a lefty bullpen guy with a bad mustache
and a couple of minor leaguers.
Hopefully since sportscenter never shows our highlights and that games are on so late in the midwest and east coast, they won’t notice how shitty Fuentes is
Sinatrasratpack - May 20, 2010
The only problem to your theory is that
he pitched last night and sucked lol. Sooo they got to see him and his mustache last night.

Say Hello to Peavy...
He’s pitching against us today.

We already have one overpaid, injury-prone lefty
We don’t need another one.
Slyintine - May 20, 2010
Umm....
Peavy is not a lefty, unless you are just refering to the overpaid part
billhune - May 20, 2010
I always forget Peavy isn't a lefty
Replace lefty with pitcher.
Slyintine - May 20, 2010
Peavy=No trade clause
Peavy has a full NTC for 2010 and a limited one for 2011 and 2012 (he gets his 10-and-5 that year, too).
Now, every player has his price, and Peavy’s price for waiving his NTC might be guaranteeing the option year of 2013 for $22M (instead of the $4M buyout).
I like the guy, but I wouldn’t go all in like that in trading players of any reasonable value AND pushing an additional $18M at a guy who has shown some fragility in the past.
George Kaplan - May 20, 2010
10 and 5 rights
for Peavy won’t go into effect until July 31 of 2014. That is assuming he is still with the White Sox at that point. That will be the 5th anniversary of his trade from the Padres to the White Sox
billhune - May 20, 2010
You don't need the 10-5 rule if you have a no-trade clause written into your contract
Peavy’s contract is almost untradeable anyways. Assuming another team picked him up in July, they’d owe him about $5M for the rest of this year, $16M for next, $17M for 2012, and then there’s a $22M option with a $4M buyout on 2013. That’s a minimum of $42M for a guy who’s pitched 150 innings since 2007. Thanks, but no thanks.
Suboptimal - May 20, 2010
I realize that
I was refering to George’s point that his 10 and 5 rights will kick in during 2012, when it wouldn’t be until 2014 if he stays with the White Sox until then
billhune - May 20, 2010
Nope
Apparently, that “right” is baked into his contract.
That’s the point—he is contractually going to receive the 10-and-5 benefits in 2012, regardless of whether or not he’s traded or how long he stays with the White Sox.
George Kaplan - May 20, 2010
wow kudos to Peavy's agent....
savy
norcaliangelsfan - May 20, 2010
Wow
that is a good job by his agent. I just looked at his contract info on Cot’s.
billhune - May 20, 2010
That was Kenny Williams' gamble
Taking on a deal like Peavy’s is like playing a game of Old Maid. In this case, if Peavy pitches lights-out then Williams looks like a genius, but if he is nothing more than average—never mind “mediocre”—then he will finish his contract as a member of the White Sox. There is no way another team will take that deal on if Peavy shows signs of the fragility he has displayed in the last two seasons.
I’m betting the White Sox would be thrilled to have Clayton Richard on their roster instead of Peavy right now.
George Kaplan - May 20, 2010
Trading will be tough this year
What do we have that anyone will want? And what do we have that is expendable? We have fewer MLB ready prospects, and the top prospects we do have, we really want to keep (Conger, Trout, Reckling) and need to keep. I think going after any expensive player such as Peavy will decimate us too much. I’d rather just bite the bullet for a season and try to come back stronger next year. Maybe we can pick someone up off waivers that turns it around and magically helps us out.
“A huge trade in the cards is not.” – Yoda
Rally Manatee - May 20, 2010
These are my thoughts exactly
What do we have that anyone would want that we can afford to do without? Our team is barely getting by as it is. What happens if we lose trade away 2 or 3 guys to get say, 1 pitcher?
People always wanna trade Juan or Napoli for this reliever or that starter because they are cheap and hit well over a full season, which makes them valuable pieces. Well, that also makes them valuable pieces to us. Juan is pretty much guaranteed to hit into the mid-20’s in HR this year and already has 5. We don’t have an OF bench player or prospect that I believe will hit more than 5 all year. Likewise, we have no catcher that is ready to come up and replace what Nap brings to the table just yet. You can make the same arguement for any of our other players you might want to trade.
I don’t think there’s going to be much in the way of blockbuster moves this year and I don’t think there should be. Outside of waiver claims, free agents and guys who’ve been released, I don’t think we’ll be making many moves.
Commander_Nate - May 20, 2010
do we really need to trade for another Kazmir?
DAD OF VLAD - May 20, 2010
Peavy has a better track record than Kazmir had (has)
That being said, he’s not what he used to be.

I love the Colonel......
but I still wouldnt say he’s number 2 on the team right now……but its getting close.
norcaliangelsfan - May 20, 2010
Agree, but I wouldn't say he's getting close to being our second best pitcher yet.
I’d like to see more than two consecutive good games to determine we’re out of the woods on that one.
snowhor - May 20, 2010 via mobile
Peavy was the fish that Tony Reagins let get away last off season.
Sure he is expensive but we all have to realize the different place in the standings we would be in now if we could trade Kazmir’s losses for Peavy’s wins. Clifford Lee is better than Peavy by a margin and he will be available soon. We’re going to continue being who we are until we get one of them.
44FAN - May 20, 2010
Peavy has won 1 more game than Kazmir so far this season.
~MMP~ - May 20, 2010
There I go shooting off my mouth without checking the facts first.
It just seems we had lost more than we have with Kazmir. It is really Lee that I wish I had emphasized in my comment expensive as he would be but well worth it with the wins he could bring the Angels.
44FAN - May 20, 2010
The Peavy strokers here must be talking about a different Peav.
The only Peavy I see is 3-2 with a 5.37 ERA. Not exactly the ray of sunshine I expected to find after reading all the comments here.
snowhor - May 20, 2010 via mobile
True but
He is 3-0, 2.31 in May
Talk about tough schedules. Even in a 2-game mini series with the struggling White Sox we get their two hottest pitchers. Ugh.
Well, one ‘ace’ down, one to go.
LAASurfin - May 20, 2010
So far Weaver is "one of them."
Although Lee hasn’t pitched enough games to make a good comparison this year, Weaver is definitely pitching better than Peavey.
Rally Manatee - May 21, 2010
