Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Rays 4, Angels 3 ... Jered Weaver only allowed one earned run but 3 other runs were scored under his watch and the Angels handed the rubber game of their series with the Rays to Joe Maddon and David Price. A little throwing error in the first inning and two passed balls by catcher Ryan Budde led to the demise of the Anaheim crew. Weaver was masterful, striking out 12 Rays in 7.1 innings pitched. But the bats producing 3 runs could not overcome what the gloves gave away.
Howie Kendrick looked like he wanted to win, hitting two singles and an RBI double, but with DH Mike Napoli striking out three times, Scioscia countered the futility with Hideki Matsui... only to see the big offseason acquisition ground out weakly to end the 8th inning. Meanwhile Vladimir Guerrero is 2 for 4 with a solo homer and 2 runs scored tonight in Texas.

I honestly can't believe how bad this team is
chairmanofthebar - May 12, 2010
We're accustomed to getting nothing from our DH
so I can’t vote Naps.
Halowood - May 12, 2010
Considering how much some on this site expect of him at DH,
maybe you should re-think that.
wumbug - May 12, 2010
I cant believe
Budde actually let that ball pass. The one day Sosh decided to put Budde in, he makes a game changing error.
phoenix15 - May 12, 2010
Frandsen should be an option too, he sure contributed to the Rays cause
~MMP~ - May 12, 2010
but if you think about it
i forgot who was batting but he struck out to end the top half after that ball passed
GutterDem0n - May 12, 2010 via mobile
wait, i lie.. that was the first run wasent it?
GutterDem0n - May 12, 2010 via mobile
Second, I think.
red floyd - May 12, 2010
I
Cant believe this team, are they really this bad. damn man frustrating to watch, were lucky the mariners keep loosing n suck.
Drizzy23 - May 12, 2010
I think even Wood
may have had that play.
phoenix15 - May 12, 2010
When is Mathis slated to come back?
And when is the rest of our REAL team coming back?
This is all just some sad simulacrum
Raaddad - May 12, 2010
I'm thinking it's about panic time.
I’m not sure this team is going to get any better.
We’ve got lousy starting pitching (except for Weaver), terrible relievers, horrific defensive team with grandpas in the outfield, and our offense is anemic at best.
I’m officially worried.
bc56274 - May 12, 2010
what I really hate
is the thought that Lackey is sitting there laughing while he says how glad he is that he bailed out
ladybug - May 12, 2010
Of course the Sux are sucking big now too
Great chance they will finish 3rd
Raaddad - May 12, 2010
True
I actually respect the Rays and they’re for real this year.
chairmanofthebar - May 12, 2010
They sure are
Pitching looks great in particular
BoSux’ pitching, hitting and defense is very questionable—ain’t it great!
Raaddad - May 12, 2010
let him laugh
we will be laughing years 4-5 of his contract. Guaranteed
UCIHalo - May 12, 2010

ryanfea - May 12, 2010
How preposterous is that?
Weaver strikes out a career high 12 batters and STILL LOSES THE GAME. I’m not happy.
chairmanofthebar - May 12, 2010
he has thrown a no-hitter and lost too
DAD OF VLAD - May 12, 2010
Remember when he and the reliever no-hit the Dodgers
and lost anyway?

:(
clover_black - May 12, 2010
Yep, I miss when Arredondo was good
~MMP~ - May 12, 2010
of course I remember that game
Didn’t they score on a walk and a Jeff Mathis throwing error
UCIHalo - May 12, 2010
Close
Runner reached 1st on an error by Weaver, stole 2nd, reached 3rd on throwing error by Mathis, then scored on a sac fly

no it was so embarrasing
first off I payed 10 extra dollars because i bought the tickets on stubhub. 2nd i sat in left field pavillion with all the dodger idiots. 3rd. I remember saying the whole game “we’ll get a run. we are too damn good not to.” Finally, tacos at my friends house after the game when he wouldn’t shut up about his dodgers.

I thought Scioscia was a "catching guru"
No wonder so many fans think Mathis is actually a good catcher when they see crap like this. Remind me why the Angels jettisoned Jose Molina again?
Suboptimal - May 12, 2010
Do not make me cry
Brutal.
scareduck - May 12, 2010
Why we traded Jose Molina
Because he hits like Brandon Wood. Defense alone can’t win ballgames. Sometimes you have to hit the ball. Just ask the Mariners.
RallyMonkey5 - May 13, 2010 via mobile
This.
What’s with the revisionist history regarding Jose Molina I’ve noticed the last couple of days. Molina makes Mathis look like an offensive force.

This season reminds of a train wreck
no matter how horrific you just want to keep watching. It is a rare occurrence so you want to see all the details. Hopefully our train wreck wakes up, will it? Who knows…But i’ll be there every step of the way watching and cheering and talking shit! lol :)
angelskid2210 - May 12, 2010
I would say it is more like...
Taking a shit in a windowless bathroom and the power shuts off. You have no idea how long it will last. You dont know where anything is and you hear strange sounds.
This season may go on like this all year and we need to be prepared.
DAD OF VLAD - May 12, 2010
LOL!
I’m carrying my mini-mag flashlight everywhere I go now!
raskul - May 13, 2010
Has to be Budde. Take away the two runs on PB, and the Halos win.
red floyd - May 12, 2010
I can’t believe im saying this but
I think we need Mathis back. At least Mathis or Nap don’t let game changing PB go by.
phoenix15 - May 12, 2010
yes I agree
OzMonkey - May 12, 2010
Don't be so surprised
If this were last seasons (pre-playoffs) yeah I’d be shocked myself saying that. But Mathis turned some switch and has been legit since the Yankee series. I’m only worried the DL might have taken him out of his groove.
Dontbatvlad4th - May 13, 2010
This team needs to shift A.
44FAN - May 12, 2010

A golden sombrero out of our DH? We might have well been playing in the NL and had our pitcher strike out 3 times. This offense is a joke.
Teixeira Who? - May 12, 2010
Actually three K's is a hat trick
4 k’s is a golden sombrero…but it’s terrible know matter how it is spun.
angelskid2210 - May 13, 2010
This is good
"Weaver stepped up once again as a leader on this team by picking up his catcher and stating that its baseball and those things happen.Weaver also stated that the 2nd passed ball which came as a result of he and Budde being crossed up on the signs could have been either players fault. "
It’s nice that Weaver can manage to be fiery and competitive on the field, but is still standing by his teammates and not pointing fingers.
~MMP~ - May 12, 2010
Weaver sounds like
The Anti-Lackey.

what was the pre game pick question?
i thought it was will more then 3 Angels reach base in the 1st inning
is that wrong?
Vladd#27 - May 12, 2010
I think it was will the Angels send more than 4 batters to the plate in the 1st
~MMP~ - May 12, 2010
i think it is wrong
4 made it to the plate the first inning

pregame pick question
Question: YES or NO: Will the Angels send more than 4 men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning?
Odds: 2
Answer: NO
44FAN - May 13, 2010
^ YEP ^ they sent 4
not more than 4
Rev Halofan - May 13, 2010

DAD OF VLAD - May 13, 2010
I missed alot of the game,
Thank you very much SoCal traffic. But this seems to be yet another game where the starting pitching showed up, but the D and offense once again had an epic fail. God this feels like being a Halo fan back in the day. The main difference being HH and other Halo fans to share in my misery.

Angels
Ive been trying to get the Dodgers to go after Zack Granick—Maybe The Angels can put together some prospects for him? And what about Pedro Martinez? Also there are many good hitters out there that can help
-Dye? Crawford? I would give Wood about 100 more at bats and if that doesnt work trade him-He might do well with another team-He does have the talent but it just doesnt seem to be working right now-How about this——Wood-Kazmir and 3 prospects for Zack? KC just might do that?spc7 - May 13, 2010
No way in hell.
~MMP~ - May 13, 2010
The only flaw is
You’d have to pay KC to take Wood. Take Wood out of the deal and they may go for it.
ttsec - May 13, 2010
No, they would NEVER go for it, with or without Wood.
~MMP~ - May 13, 2010
Lackey
John Lackey was a great Angel-But I still would have never paid him that kind of money-We miss Vladdy and Figgy both-we would be at least 5 to 6 games better with them now!
spc7 - May 13, 2010
I think we only miss Vladdy in the sense of keeping the latin players together (this is my suspicion). The only reason I think he is hitting in Texas is:
A. Arlington Stadium
B. The gigantic amount of offensive pressure on him as an Angel is most definitely no longer there as a Ranger (and that was my issue with him while he wore red, he needed to relax and he could be a great hitter for us….but he couldn’t).
Dontbatvlad4th - May 13, 2010
Vlad is hitting in Arlington consistent with what he's done there his whole career
On the road he’s hitting a robust .226 or thereabouts. Whioch wouldn’t have done us any good except for the 9 games we play in Texas.
Fred Fredrix - May 13, 2010
Yeah but the heat in Arlington certainly helped the ball travel
Plus Vlad hit against Texas pitching, not for Texas pitching.
Simply put (and as I screamed all offseason), Vlad isn’t done. One crappy year doesn’t negate his talent. Of course, Vlad’s numbers wouldn’t be discussed as much if Mothra remembered how to hit about .250.
Teixeira Who? - May 13, 2010
look on the bright side
The Wonder Dog is back!!!!
is that really what this season has come to, the only bright spot being the return of a goofy announcer? sadly the answer would be yes.
2pintsofbooze - May 13, 2010
Are you suggesting
that Rex Hudler make a comeback as a player? He will hit and field better than Wood.
ttsec - May 13, 2010
nope
I was commentiong on him being back on the pregame radio broadcasts. yesterday was his first day back. but I think he’s only doing them before every Tuesday home game, which makes no sense. he must be enjoying his time off…how many times a week do you think he visits the local dipsensary?
2pintsofbooze - May 13, 2010
He could pitch better than Saunders.
Teixeira Who? - May 13, 2010
That was a day from hell for a player
Budde looked woeful behind the plate. The two passed balls equaled two “gimme” runs. A 3-2 Angel win turns into a 4-3 Angel loss. Weaver is 4-2 instead of 5-1.
And to top that off, he looks even worse, like he doesn’t have his head in the game, when he starts heading off to the dugout after only two outs, making Weaver have to call out to him to stop and come back. That’s the kind of thing that makes a player want to dig a hole behind the plate to hide themselves in. Errors are a part of the game, but mental errors infuriate a manager.
At least he has the solace of knowing he’s not the only one on the team blowing chunks. Clutch hitting and solid relief pitching seems to be stuck off in some sig alert down the freeway. The starter’s ERA looks even worse due to the relievers allowing a whopping 50% of inherited runners to score.
It would be one thing if it was only a couple holes that needed to be filled, but right now the pitching, hitting, running and defense looks like swiss cheese. It’s hard to figure out where to even start.
The team just looks so lifeless and bland out there. No enthusiasm, no chemistry. They don’t seem young and frisky. The Whiz Kids look like the Wheeze Kids. It’s hard to have a running game when so many of your players look like they have a hard enough time just walking to the plate. Seems to be a lack of cohesiveness and game plan. Maybe once they “gel” and get that fire back they’ll roar right back into the race. Here’s hoping.
