about 2 years ago: ANAHEIM, CA - MAY 11: Scott Kazmir #19 of the Los Angeles Angels fields a comebacker off the bat of Carl Crawford #13 of the Tampa Bay Rays during the first inning at Angels Stadium on May 11, 2010 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)
Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Angels 2, Rays 7 ... Scott Kazmir passed the 100 pitch mark in the 5th inning and the middle relief went into meltdown. The bats would have been in better position to score the 3 runs that Kaz surrendered but a 6-0 lead late saw a big rally turn into a textbook moment of choke. Howie Kendrick struck out with the bases loaded and 1 out and that it was that close that late is the only thing close to a silver lining for this struggling team and it was about a mile away from the border of Silverliningsville.
If one has to look deep at all in this game for anything other than listless offense, flat pitching and AAA defense, the two hits by Erick Aybar and Torii Hunter glimmer as something. Perhaps the fact that there is a game tomorrow allows the team to turn the page, but it is one more painful reminder that celebrating division titles, let alone winning seasons, is something nobody should dare take for granted.
The Game Thread roll call is after the poll ... so sorry you people had to suffer through this excruciating contest.

DAD OF VLAD - May 11, 2010
Hard to see any positives in that one. Yick.
I would’ve screamed like a little girl if Howie had hit a GS in the 8th to tie it. But alas, it was not our night. I wasn’t too happy with that 1-2-3 ninth.

My therapist is definitely seeing a pattern
with the Angels win/loss and my anxiety/depression.
Anaheim71420 - May 11, 2010 via mobile
Anaheim71420 is currently on suicide watch
moosemastr - May 11, 2010
It happens to all fans of the game
Baseball is a marriage and it takes hard work during the hard times and is fun during the great times. this is why my wife hates the baseball season. She knows how the angels did by the level of depression i express.
Just remember you could be Pirate fans 18 years of losing…oh my
DAD OF VLAD - May 11, 2010

Big A suffering from rolling black outs.
Damn economy
Anaheim71420 - May 11, 2010 via mobile
I couldn't decide on BOTG.
So, this fail goes to the entire team. Oh well, we’ll get ’em tomorrow. I hope.
halofolife - May 11, 2010
So
what’s wrong with this crappy bullpen? No one wants to give some old love to Washburn?
phoenix15 - May 11, 2010
When will we see Kazmir go 6 innings again?
SenorChuckles - May 11, 2010
against the Giants
heard they were a swing happy team. Kazmir vs Giants should go great
phoenix15 - May 11, 2010
Nah
New hitting coach. He’s managed to turn San Fran into a team that consists of more than just pitchers and a jolly third baseman. Kaz only goes 6 innings if he learns what a strike zone is.
Teixeira Who? - May 11, 2010
he's
always been like that
Figgi4life - May 11, 2010
Do you mean like an underachiever? Because last year he had a bounty of solid starts. He’ll get back to form; it’ll just take a while because he missed ST—time heals all wounds.
SenorChuckles - May 11, 2010
no.
a high pitch count…er…
Figgi4life - May 11, 2010
the dude had many starts where he pitched at least 6; give him time.
SenorChuckles - May 11, 2010
I gave it to Kazmir.
This guy pitches like Fuentes, nibble nibble nibble.
bc56274 - May 11, 2010
He’s not even
nibbling that great. Good nibblers should be able to get fast outs shouldn’t they?
phoenix15 - May 11, 2010
I just think he isn't able to control his stuff.
Gubi is talking as if kaz has the ability to stop nibbling and throw over the plate, challenge hitters.
Maybe he iis and just can’t hit his spots? Somethings up
clover_black - May 11, 2010
Maybe he’s been taking lessons from Rodney and not Maddux
phoenix15 - May 11, 2010
Shields
if he holds, we’re still in the game.
Fred Fredrix - May 11, 2010
I wish
Shields can step through a time machine and come back to his 2006 self.
phoenix15 - May 11, 2010
WTF
why do the other divisional rivals gets to face sucky teams like Os and KC while we have to face the winning record teams?
phoenix15 - May 11, 2010
saving them for the end of the season DUH
DAD OF VLAD - May 11, 2010
...
Poor Zack Greinke doesn’t even have a win; If only we can pull some magical deal to attain his greatness…
SenorChuckles - May 11, 2010
they have pills for that
DAD OF VLAD - May 11, 2010
I’ll leave the oxycotton for Jenna Jameson.
SenorChuckles - May 11, 2010
Rec'd
Limbaugh might want some as well.
Teixeira Who? - May 11, 2010
Im sure even Shields
isn’t gonna give up a 3 run HR to an O
phoenix15 - May 11, 2010
Time to let Scioscia's Buddies go!
Pitching Coach – Failed
Hitting Coach – Failed
Bullpen Coach – Failed
Just give them a different job…
HalosBurnsRed - May 11, 2010
They should just rotate jobs.
Teixeira Who? - May 11, 2010
Shields is to a ballgame as the hydrogen bomb was to Bikini Atoll
PieceOfAase - May 11, 2010
A way to make it an US Military only beach resort?
DAD OF VLAD - May 11, 2010
it might be time to blow this team up. Trade Torii, Fuentes, Abreu, Matsui for prospects
big0lbad - May 11, 2010
So trade 3 of the team's most popular players(and Fuentes) because the team is having a rough first month?
That sounds like a massive overreaction to me
~MMP~ - May 12, 2010
Another example of how our auspicious off season,
bench bolstering efforts have paid off.
I’m sick of watching Willits, Quinlan and whoever those two nobodies in the lineup are?
The front office needs an enema!
HALO N BRIMSTONE - May 11, 2010
The one glimmer of hope on this bleak evening
The Angels’ strength-of-schedule is really frickin’ high right now. They’ve played the Tigers 7 times, the Yankees 6 times, the Twins and Red Sox 4 times, and tomorrow they’ll have played the Rays 3 times. Those are all big hitting teams that draw lots of walks and hit lots of homers. But soon there will be series against the light-hitting A’s, Mariners, and Royals. Unfortunately the Angels are getting ripped off in interleague play: they get the Dodgers, Rockies, Cubs, Cards, and Brewers instead of the Reds, Pirates, or Astros. But maybe with a more favorable schedule they’ll climb their way back to .500 by July.
Suboptimal - May 11, 2010
The only team that scares me in there is the Cards.
I cannot wait to feast on the Dodger pitching staff. They make it look like we have a staff of Cy Youngs. I suppose Colorado could be a hassle too. We’ll see.
Teixeira Who? - May 11, 2010
feels like the same pattern of Sosh teams
or so it seems to me we’re always stumbling out of the gate. but this year we’ve actually played a tough opening schedule….let’s pray it pays off soon. the scuffling is team wide now.

That is some serious ass-hattery...
I am a brutal heckler, but I would not heckle my own players when they are in the batting circle.

Highlight of the Night
The shattered remains of Matsui’s bat landed a few feet to my left. Kid sitting in the aisle seat got it (and an inning or two later had a ball tossed to him; at least he had a good night).
Two specific plays that really bothered me: Top of the 7th, Crawford is on 1st after a single. With a 1-1 count to Zobrist, Soth calls for a pitchout. Of course, Crawford stays put, and steals second on the next pitch. Joe Maddon knows Soth better than just about anyone. He knows a pitchout is likely in that situation, so of course Crawford isn’t going to go. Then, with a 2-1 count, Crawford steals easily, knowing they can’t pitchout on 2-1. That pitchout virtually guaranteed the stolen bag for Crawford. On the other hand, if Bell throws a strike at 1-1 (he was throwing those, mostly), then you can take a chance with a pitchout on 1-2. And if Crawford steals anyway (and let’s face it, if he runs, he’ll be safe with Napoli behind the plate), at least you’re at 1-2.
The other: top of the 5th (I believe), Longoria’s AB. Kaz manages to get ahead 0-2 with a pair of fastballs, then throws two more (all at about 89-90). Longoria fouled both straight back – in other words, he has the fastball timed. So, with 0-2, what do they throw him? Another 90 mph “fastball,” which he lined into center for an RBI single. Where’s the slider? And if it’s a fastball, why isn’t it about neck-high?

Angels Baseball
is depressing, what happen to real Angel baseball, running from 1st to 3rd, stealing bases, bunt singles, hit after hit, spectacular plays in the infield and out field. We have alot of problems and this team better fix them cuz if they dont we will be the team in last place at the end.
Drizzy23 - May 12, 2010
A new and fresh perspective.
XYZ123 - May 12, 2010
“I’m not asking anybody,” said Eeyore. “I’m just telling everybody.
We can look for the
North PolePlayoffs, or we can play ‘Here we go gathering Nuts in May’ with the end part of an ants’ nest. It’s all the same to me.”
raskul - May 12, 2010
Look at the positive
We’re still only four games out. They gotta gei it together soon, though. And yes, that 1st to 3rd, stealilng bases team is gone with the wind. We were going to be a powerhouse this year but that hasn’t happen either. Yes I take comfort on only being four games out but I am afraid that it just may be a long long season…
