Final Score in Detroit: Tigers 3, Angels 2 ... The final Angel from the 2002 team pulled the 2010 Angels back under .500 when he surrendered a solo walkoff homerun to Johnny Damon in the bottom of the 9th inning at Comerica Park. Scot Shields had managed to get 1 out when he left a cookie out over the plate against a red hot Tiger.
The good Scott, Scott Kazmir, pitched an excellent 6 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, striking out 7 and gassing out at 117 pitches. Kevin Jepsen and Fernando Rodney pitched scoreless single innings but with the score tied at 2 in the 9th, manager Mike Scioscia brought in Shields instead of closer Brian Fuentes.
The reason that Scot has one T

And congratulations to Home Plate umpire Gary Cederstrom for saving eleven calories by not taking three steps to his left to see a safe slide at home plate by Hideki Matsui. When MLB finally has a shameful umpiring scandal, expect Gary and his bookie to be at the center of it.

Where’s
the HP ump. Shouldn’t his name be listed? If the lazy ass ump got the fucking call right, Shields wouldn’t even had to pitch in the 9th. Fuentes might have gotten the save.

when you get 9 times up to bat.........
its hard to be too upset over anything an ump does.
norcaliangelsfan - May 1, 2010
that
would’ve been the go-ahead run. Fuentes might’ve pitched a perfect 9th.

you wanna speak in hypotheticals?
Then…..if they had scored more early or even later……….the UMP would have been a non-factor.
Fun isnt it?

the ump cost them a MINIMUM of two runs that inning

Actually, Eric...
… Gary’s twin brother. As a lark, they decided to switch places for the day to see if they could get away with it. Eric… who had no umpiring experience, if fact, was turned away at umpiring school due to terrible eyesight… figured he could probably wing it by just randomly yelling “safe!” or “out!”, assuming he’d have a 50-50 chance of having it right.
It would certainly explain that call.

I'll beat my dead horse again
Gee wouldn’t it have been nice to have another reliever in the pen like Kohn…. instead of a guy like Q getting splinters,
when Q isn’t going to be a defensive sub because we have Maicer and Willits (or today Torii on the bench)
and he’s never going to be a pinch runner in a close situation because we have faster guys on the bench,
and he’s never going to be a pinch-hitter in a close game because it’s the AL and he’s worse than anyone against any type of pitcher than anyone who would be in the starting lineup to begin with…..
MH252525 - May 1, 2010
I think
we should put Kohn in Triple-A before the Bigs
Thompson hasnt given up a run so far in Triple-A, in 13 innings i think, give him a shot
Vladd#27 - May 1, 2010
fine!
I’ll settle for that. I’m all for Thompson in the bigs over Q
MH252525 - May 1, 2010
plus its not like we don't have 3 relievers on pace
to be in WAY more games than just about anyone would feel comfortable with.
MH252525 - May 1, 2010
Bummer that your horse still has life, but...
I really do not see how an extra long relief pitcher could have helped us in a 2-3 ballgame. The pitchers held up their end of the deal.
Downing Rules - May 1, 2010
Yea the pitchers held up their end of the deal
well except for Shields, but the Angels CAN NOT continue to pitch Jepsen, Rodney, Stokes, and to a lesser extent Bulger at the rate they’ve been going. So if you have like 2/3 of your bullpen being put into games at a rate that is unsustainable and you have more relievers (likely competent ones in Kohn or even Thompson) in the minors who could help ease the workload but you don’t want to do it because you have a past his 2 or 3 years of being a useful bench guy who I don’t think Scioscia even trusts in any close game, then you try to tell me I’m the one that’s crazy????
Right now Jepsen is on a pace to be in 91 games.
Rodney is on pace for 84 games…..
Stokes is on pace for 71 games
and Bulger is on pace for 59 games
heck even Shields is on pace for 59 games…….
You can seriously look at those numbers and say the Angels don’t need another reliever?
Get another freaking reliever up here and just send Q back to the minors until September…..
MH252525 - May 1, 2010
How is another reliever going to change Sosh's choice?
If Kohn or Thompson had been there, Sosh wouldn’t have put either of them in. Die, horse, die!
yeswecan - May 1, 2010
look at my response to Downing Rules above
lets have 2/3 of our bullpen in slings by August all so Q can draw a ML paycheck…….

It was against the Indians a few games ago...
Shin-Shoo Choo gunned down Matsui in a play that was not even close. I did not see the play today, but it sounded like Damon made the strongest throw he’s ever made and was aided by the blue.

Plenty of fail to go around (Softense and Blopen specifically)
but shouldn’t Scioscia be on that list? I know I wasn’t the only one to see Shields warming up in the top of the 9th and say that the Angels needed to score now or there would be a walkoff. This was what, the fourth L that can be solely placed at the feet of Shields?
The confidence angle is cute and everything but I think plenty of people can see Shields doesn’t have the ability to pitch on a major league level right now. He needs to either only be brought in when the Angels are getting destroyed (which seems to be every other game) or sent down to regain whatever part of his game he can.
And man I wasn’t too thrilled about sitting Tori, I hope that bench didn’t disrupt any potential rhythm he had starting up.
Dontbatvlad4th - May 1, 2010
Panther/Blame is players only
If you want a fresh Torii in August and September, days off during May are a good thing.
Rev Halofan - May 1, 2010
Ah gotcha, didn’t know that about panther/blame. I get the rest aspect for Aug/Sep, I just felt right now when he is potentially getting hot risking breaking whatever rhythm he has was a bad move.
Dontbatvlad4th - May 1, 2010
I still contend...
that there is something wrong/sore with Torii. Give him rest NOW or else he’s going on the DL. Just my opinion.
Downing Rules - May 1, 2010
Yep........
wumbug - May 1, 2010
the thing I didn't like about the bench....
was if you are going to bench him, bench him against Verlander who throws like 100 mph….. but if you are going to argue that Torii needs a breather to stay fresh in August and September then what about the bullpen???? Rodney, Bulger, Stokes and Jepsen are getting overused and abused….. in that the number of games they’ve played in can’t be expected to continue.
MH252525 - May 1, 2010
They will get their rest, too.
Patience young MH. Maybe they are thinking about bringing up a reliever from the minors. Relax a bit. We’ve seen your comments several times and you bring up good points.
Downing Rules - May 1, 2010
thank you for saying I'm at least bringing up good points
up higher it sure didn’t seem you thought that at all
MH252525 - May 1, 2010
Definitely you are on target...
the fact that the big three in the pen are on a collision course with >80 appearances is troubling, to say the least. Considering we have nibblers like Pineiro and Kazmir, those two are already libilities to the bullpen.
Downing Rules - May 3, 2010

when we get around to it, you’ get ’em! Angels Review: a quick profile
AL Rankings
OFFENSE
Runs: 9th
BA: 6th
OBP: 7th
HRs: 6th
SLG: 8th
PITCHING
Runs: 13th
HRs: 14th
FIP: 14th
DEFENSE
RZR: 6th
UZR: 11th
(note: stats do not include today’s game)
The pitching has been AWFUL, compiling the worst FIP in the AL and allowing the most HRs. The offense has been sub-par. The Angels have scored as many as 8 runs in a game just once so far this season.
And yet the Angels are only one game out of first. Obviously the level of play has to improve and this team has the talent to do so. Be patient.

You would think that THIS team…….and This FO and managerial staff would get the benefit of the doubt.
Some of you people are spoiled.
You should head on over to Buffalo Rumblings and see what its like over there………..Im scolded daily for being so pessimistic……..yet no playoffs or direction in 10 years will do that to a fan.
Meanwhile over here………there’s a proven and consistant method that works…….and its not always gonna be perfect, but in the end…..atleast I know the right people will make the right moves.

something along those lines.
norcaliangelsfan - May 1, 2010
I have nothing but faith in scioscia,
and I totally agree that jepsen/rodney can’t continue to pitch in 2/3 of all our games.
Today, Jepsen was lights out in his 1 IP. Why not send him back out there for a 2nd inning? I’m not suggesting we do this all the time, but it seems like scioscia never uses any reliever for more than an inning in close game situations, even if they pitch a quick inning with few pitches. (Yes, I’m aware that Palmer often pitches quite a few innings in the same game, but that’s not usually in the same situation that I’m trying to use as my example). If Scioscia used Jepsen for 2 IP today and then Rodney for the 9th (and possibly 10th), they might not have been available for tomorrow, but we might have had a chance to win this game. Sure, any of our relievers could have given up a walk off bomb, but Shields (who like his intro song, has in fact become so numb, however he shouldn’t get an encore, I don’t want more) needs to go the way of Esteban Yan, JC Romero, Hector Carrasco, and Justin Speier (and countless others I could have included). Any thoughts from anyone else in the halosphere?
One other concern I have is with our bench. Aside from our backup catcher(s) (when the real ones come off the DL) and Maicer, we don’t have anyone who is really a major league player. If we lose an outfielder and an infielder at the same time, we have Reggie the super minor leaguer in the OF (or Matsui and then nobody who can DH), Maicer somewhere in the IF, and then our bench has who? Q, and some other minor league call-ups?
BrownLunchSack - May 1, 2010
I blame Maicer for not playing.
when he starts, 6-3 and 5 runs per game
when he doesn’t, 6-10 and 3.5 runs per game
