The good news is that Hideki Matsui went 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored Wednesday night. But JJ Hardy's bat and glove were almost enough and a few other flaws in a shaky few innings doomed Angels starter Ervin Santana. Carl Pavano started for the Twins and earned his Yankees paycheck courtesy of a generous strike zone and some cold Angel bats.

THE GOOD: Matsui punches the clock and makes contact, a quiet professional.

THE BAD: Ervin Santana's Ramon Ortiz impersonation on the mound, surrendering two homeruns.
悪い:マウンドにアービンサンタナ のラモンオルティスの偽装、2本のホームランを放棄。
THE UGLY: A 9th inning rally makes Brandon Wood appear to be more of a goat than he deserved.

Shields is back!
ReggieBullits - April 7, 2010
nice to see Shields have a good one
And all the Wood haters should take a chill pill until he has enough ABs to make a reasonable assessment. Three games is nowhere near enough.
yeswecan - April 7, 2010
exactly lay off the kid
I just hope and pray that Wood can find his niche.
Booing the kid only makes things worse.
deejayelleseven - April 7, 2010 via mobile
And in the meantime, he's hurting the team because he's failed every time he's come up here.
Now he’s out of options and still hasn’t figured things out. And, I’ll repeat, it’s hurting this team. And that hurts me.
AlanFalcon - April 7, 2010
Blame today is hard to say
Naps was not Clutch
Santana was out pitched
Wood just showed that he is still a raw player
BLAME: goes to the team for being soft and not attack the Twins
Matusi you have been a Fantasy steal for me. Ride you to the bank baby
DAD OF VLAD - April 7, 2010
Entire team ... exactly.
red floyd - April 8, 2010
Bases loaded...
… 1 out, Pavano has been throwing first ball fast balls right down the middle all night…
Naps watches the first one go by. Ball game right there.
Blame of the game goes to Napoli.
Jietoh - April 8, 2010
COMMUNITY CONDUCT:
* OPTIMISTIC? Don’t bully others into cheering along.
* PESSIMISTIC? Bitch once, then offer a solution. Don’t bitch twice, it’s alright.
IMO…The constant bitching about Wood is tiresome
K3YEROUT - April 7, 2010
he needs only positive reinforcement
DAD OF VLAD - April 7, 2010
Agreed. I am not enjoying reading the gamethreads with all the constant bitching about Wood.
from certain individuals. If it continues I don’t want to participate for awhile…It is game 3 for crying out loud. Tim Salmon was a notoriously slow starter. I agree he has not looked good more often than not, but give it a rest and root for the guy…
K3YEROUT - April 7, 2010
You said it brother
He is a kid
we dump him now or tell him he sucks alot
he will never develop into a Glaus but will become a McPherson
DAD OF VLAD - April 7, 2010
that rule
is actually meant to stop people from getting into each other’s face… but bitching nonstop to the fates themselves is tiresome but I am not all nannystate about it yet.
Rev Halofan - April 7, 2010
agreed.
the backlash this guy is getting after 12 or so ABs is ridiculous. However, I have no problem with bitching after he is given ample time to sink or swim.
clover_black - April 7, 2010
agree wholeheartedly...
K3YEROUT - April 7, 2010
OTOH, if there's gonna be a Blame of the Game
…it’s a little pathetic that the crowd goes all bleeding heart and gives Wood a push tonight.
Only one player went 0 for 4 tonight while killing two rallies and leaving four on base. If you removed the faces and names, and just gave these guys numbers in the box score, it would be self-evident who the blame of the game was.
It’s not throwing Wood an anchor to hold him to the same standard as everyone else. It’s the bigs — it ain’t a Sally Fields movie about a lovable but slow kid brother who just needs a break.
Turks Teeth - April 7, 2010 via mobile
TURK nails it...
and you even finessed it compared to the 73 point gap between Wood and Santana had on fangraphs…
Rev Halofan - April 7, 2010
Turk DID nail it. This isn’t about just 12 at bats. This kid has performed exactly like he’s performing now every time he’s come up. Yeah,we get that he needs experience, but he’s got an infield starting full-time position on one of the best performing contenders in the Majors and he hasn’t earned that spot yet. I don’t give a rat’s ass how good someone does against minor league pitchers. They’re minor league pitchers for a reason! Maicer Izturis HAS earned that spot and SHOULD be the primary guy at the corner with WOOD playing utility until he gets it together.
I DO believe he has great potential, but right now that kid is over-matched. He does NOT need a daily starting position on one of MLB’s elite teams to learn how to play the damned game. He needs to earn that spot.
firebird81 - April 7, 2010
Catch 22
He needs the daily at-bats to get comfortable.
b0rd3rline - April 7, 2010
yet Chone Figgins and Izturis both played the Utility role and became who they are today. He does not need a starting position to learn how to play the game, certainly not with a team the caliber of the Angels..
firebird81 - April 8, 2010
Funny thing about Figgy and Izzy in the utility role:
They got everyday at bats in the role. Sending Woody to the bench would not give him the same opportunity that they had to improve.
b0rd3rline - April 8, 2010
oh, of course Wood gets BOTG
It’s another thing to bail on him after 3 games.
Everyone knows that 4 games is the standard to judge a career on.
clover_black - April 7, 2010
I agree, my only objection was those who seem to be giving up on him entirely after 3 games
~MMP~ - April 7, 2010

desecrator09 - April 7, 2010
I don't get it
Does the person with one out have a better chance or something?
Suboptimal - April 7, 2010
Yeah, groundball, error, sac fly...
K3YEROUT - April 7, 2010
in that situation,
more pitch outcomes score a run.
A deep fly ball scores a run with one out.
A deep fly ball does not score a run with two outs.
Figgi4life - April 7, 2010
that is saying
that the guy with 2 outs and hits a grounder with a man on first is not a bum
because he did not hit into double play
while a guy with one out hits into a double play sucks
DAD OF VLAD - April 7, 2010
Santana was fine
So he walked one of the best hitters in baseball, then gave up a bomb to another great hitter. Other than that, he looked fine: two runs, no walks, four K’s, only two hard hit balls over six innings.
The Angels just couldn’t get hits when they counted. It happens. And where did this Carl Pavano guy come from?
Suboptimal - April 7, 2010
eh, pavano didnt impress me much
most of his stuff was in the zone and with an offense of the Angel’s standards, he shoulda gotten pounded.
desecrator09 - April 7, 2010
uhhh,
a lot of it was NOT in the zone…it was called a strike by the bum behind the plate…
K3YEROUT - April 7, 2010
I was very pleased with Santana's velocity
He was consistently around 95 with the fastball. He was physically unable to do this in 2009 due to the elbow injury. In addition, it appears that Scot Shields has his 2-seam fastball back.
Despite the loss, it’s excellent news that both Santana and Shields were able to demonstrate that they have rebounded from their injuries.
Fan Since 1981 - April 7, 2010
yep the offense just never got in sync tonight
its early so i wouldnt panic yet, they’ll rough up Slowey tomorrow
desecrator09 - April 7, 2010
his slider is not what it used to be
if it’s in the dirt it’s fine, today it was being thrown for a strike, which ended badly
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - April 7, 2010
Positive:
I know the first couple of games doesn’t show anything about the season overall, but I’m glad our bullpen is putting up zeroes. That means we just need our starters to be solid, as they should be, and our offense to be great, as they should be.
Slyintine - April 7, 2010
yup
rec’d
desecrator09 - April 7, 2010
I say the Angels offense collectively just did not show up to play
Santana did not pitch that bad it was just magnified because the Angels bats were quiet
Angelsrthebest101 - April 7, 2010
Agreed
They had some chances to score but couldn’t quite pull the trigger. Still 158 games left to make things right

Just got back from The Ted
Bummed to see the Halos lost. But you should have heard the booing Troy Glaus got tonight after the 0-4 4 K night, with an error that led to two runs…
Slasher52 - April 7, 2010
I was wondering what The Ted was.
I thought maybe you were visiting Ted Williams frozen head.
bc56274 - April 7, 2010
Haha!
No, no thawing heads tonight. Sorry, I was at Ted Turner Field in Atlanta watching the Braves beat the Cubs. Jason Heyward poured me wine from a water bottle today, and later fed the masses with 5 fish and 2 loaves of bread. He also had a double and an RBI.

It seems like the Mariners offense is entirely dependent on Ichiro and Figgins, who combined for 1 hit last night, and it looks like it will be the same tonight.

It kind of matters which team you're playing.
I think we’ll get it done in the division this time, and while I’d love to see wins against the Twins, they played solid ball and have a solid team.

Woodstock
I’m not on the “Crucify Brandon Wood” bandwagon yet. The kid needs more at bats and he’ll mellow out. He’s stressed out and thinking too much (hence him taking a first pitch strike every… damn… at bat). He’ll make some great, game winning hit, get his confidence and fulfill everyone’s expectations. Keep the faith.
That being said, he was a rally killer today. He deserves the blame. If you told me at the beginning of the game that Santana was going to give up 4 runs to a team with Mauer, Morneau, et. all I would have no problem believing that. I also would have expected the offense to throw up more runs and not make Pavano look like the second coming of Tom Seaver. Regardless, Wood killed the rally. He gets the blame. Now we move on. Just because he crapped all over the rally doesn’t make it a sign of things to come. Everyone kills a rally at one point.
Let’s give Woodstock at least a month before we demand his head on a silver plate. Sound fair? Groovy.
Teixeira Who? - April 8, 2010
A Month?
So you wanna loose 20+ games in a roll before getting rid of Wood? He has over 200 AB in the MLB with less than .200 avg. They should’ve released him long ago, maybe after that game when he skipped the ball to 1st base against the Tigers in 2008.
ttsec - April 8, 2010
I can't tell if you're joking or not, because of your other comment
~MMP~ - April 8, 2010
You are literally the only one on Earth
that remembers him skipping a ball to first base against the Tigers in 2008
ryanfea - April 8, 2010
If we go on a 20 game losing streak
I guarantee it will not be all of Wood’s fault. Yes he has had over 200 ABs over the course of a couple of years. Your established MLB Player would have around 1,500 ABs at that time. It’s absurd to use sporadic ABs as proof that he can’t hit. You would also have to overlook the fact that he hit near .280 in spring training when given numerous and consecutive at bats (and hitting off of Major League pitchers).
Teixeira Who? - April 8, 2010
"dead" Wood?
Agree that it’s too early to ship the kid to Pigsknuckle, but I am concerned…striking out a lot, looking like a deer in the headlights on the field…tough start…I’m giving him 25 at bats…

red floyd - April 8, 2010
Brandon's performance is a concern.
That is certainly true. But I think I agree with you posters that think we should give the man a little more time. This is his first season as a starter from day one – I think we ought to consider how much pressure Brandon feels being an Opening Day starter for a Major League ball club for the first time in his career. Granted, some guys adjust a little more quickly (cough) Heyward (cough), but after all the hype over this guy I think he deserves a decent shot at proving himself in the long run.
Besides, we can make it out of this series at .500 if all goes well today. I like the sound of that.
