Angels 6, Twins 3 -  FOX Sports on MSN
Hideki Matsui is fitting in just fine on the West Coast. Although he has a new uniform and a sweet new surfside home in Huntington Beach, he kept all of his usual dramatic flair at the plate. Matsui drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth and added an eighth-inning homer in his dynamic Angels debut, and Jered Weaver pitched six strong innings for Los Angeles in a 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

Good start to the season, and hopefully an indication of how 2010 will play out...good pitching and timely hitting, with a little extra punch.  (more reaps after the break)

Kazmir 'very surprised' to start on DL - angelsbaseball.com
"I felt like I was ready [to face the A's]," Kazmir said, having thrown 77 pitches in a camp game in Arizona on Sunday and then 10 more in the bullpen. "At the same time, I didn't get that many [Cactus League] innings. I have a little more time to work on things." Assuming all goes well in a tuneup on Friday for high Class A Rancho Cucamonga, Kazmir will miss only one turn in the Angels' rotation.

I've often wondered how much input a player has in making the decision to go on the DL.  Apparently from this article, Kazmir had nothing to do with it.

Team Reports - CBSSports.com
DH Hideki Matsui became the 25th player in Angels history to hit a home run in his first game with the team. Before Matsui, the most recent player to do it was 1B Kendry Morales, who hit a homer in his major league debut on May 23, 2006. Matsui and Morales hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning of Monday's victory.

Fun facts to start your day!

Angels start season in orderly fashion - LA Daily News
The Angels were so by-the-book in their season opener Monday that their lips probably were moving as they proceeded. The top of the order set the table and the middle of the order drove in the runs, before putting on their own late power display in a 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins in front of a sellout crowd of 43,504. Kendry Morales and Hideki Matsui each had RBI singles early in the game before delivering back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to give the Angels all the insurance they would need. Matsui put the Angels on top for good in the fifth inning with his two-out RBI single. "Anybody always wants to start off the season on a good note," Matsui said through an interpreter. "I'm just happy I was able to do that. Hopefully I will be able to extend this a little more."

Angels get the season started with a big bang - latimes.com
Mike Scioscia calls it "batter's box offense," which seems odd -- what other kind of offense is there in baseball? -- until you realize the manager uses it to describe runs generated with bats instead of the Angels' usual method of operation, speed and aggressive base running. The Angels slugged three solo home runs, including consecutive, eighth-inning shots by Hideki Matsui and Kendry Morales against reliever Jose Mijares that turned a tight, one-run game into a 6-3 Angels lead.

Angels 6, Twins 3: Missed openings on Opening Day - Twinkie Town
Much has been made about the Twins' off-season signings, but it was a new Angel that made the difference on Opening Night. Designated hitter Hideki Matsui, playing his first game in Anaheim, singled home the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, then homered in the eighth to lead the Angels past Minnesota, 6-3.

SBN's Twins site.  It might be fun to drop in on the other SBN sites to see their take on the game.  This recap is rather bland, but then, have you ever been to Minnesota?

Angels' Bobby Wilson is emotionally tested - latimes.com
While most teammates closed out spring training and traveled to Southern California last Wednesday, Wilson remained in Arizona that night to watch a 16-year-old right-hander from the Chicago area pitch in a high school tournament game in Scottsdale, Ariz. And it nearly brought Wilson to tears. The name of the pitcher: Henry Gigeous, the half brother of Nick Adenhart, the 22-year-old Angels pitcher who was killed along with two friends in an automobile accident last April 9. "The similarities between him and Nick . . . oh, man, just watching him warm up was heart-wrenching for me, because I got to see that so often through the minor leagues," said Wilson, a close friend of Adenhart's.

Angels mix myth and magic in opening-day win - latimes.com
The Angels have taken heat for annexing Los Angeles to their name. But if media interest is any measure, they are now the Hideki Matsui Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Dividends were immediate. In the fifth, scored tied, 3-3, Matsui hit an 0-2 pitch into right field, driving in a run for a 4-3 lead. There were 104 credential requests from Japanese media outlets, which is further indication of the genius of Arte Moreno's ownership. Calculating $10 a head for meals in the press box, for 104 reporters, for 81 home games, plus playoffs, brings about $100,000. It wasn't all that long ago that Koufax and Drysdale held out for about that. All this talk about how to create new revenue, and Moreno out-slicks them all.

First M's impressions: You're gonna love Figgins - Seattlepi
If you can't beat 'em, steal 'em: Seattle took down the A's in Monday night's debut, but you almost felt like this one was also a shot across the bow of the Los Angeles Angels with a pair of former Halos setting the tone. After telling manager Don Wakamatsu he wanted to hit third, Casey Kotchman drove in four runs -- including a game-winning two-RBI single with two out in the top of the ninth -- to highlight a terrific debut. And Chone Figgins? What's not to love about the little guy, who self-manufactured a pair of runs by walking, stealing second and moving to third twice in the early innings on bad throws by catcher Kurt Suzuki.

It was good to see morales go boom from the right side

Great to start off the season 1-0 especially with a game like that. Perfect angels baseball. Solid starts, shut down bullpen, scoring runs on singles and the long ball. Now if we can just have 172 more like this…

(insert reply here about the correct number of regular season games)
(insert snarky rebuttal about that number includes the postseason)

didn't

Mike Napoli and Terry Evans hit a HR in their first AB as an Angel?

i know Napoli did
If I remember correctly,

It was on evan’s 2nd AB

Sean Rodriguez?
Dave Parker

first PA

Then he became a waste of space.
Rodney.

10 pitches, three strikes. Aybar and HK47 bailed him out.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the crowd boo one of their own before.

They booed Rodney?

I was there and didn’t notice it, though the guys next to me were obnoxious, so I think I just blocked out the entire crowd

You could tell from the television broadcast...

That there were a smattering of boos around the 6th consecutive ball…

And the called strike after Butcher’s pep talk got some sarcastic cheers…

Yeah

I was going to say, I didn’t hear the boos on the broadcast but you sure could hear the Bronx cheer when he finally threw a strike. As our new broadcaster said, Rodney sure makes things interesting. I thought we got rid of K-rod?

May have gotten rid of K-Rod

but there is still a F-Rod around.

Is there a reason for the booing?

I really hope the booing was done by a stupid minority. It never helps the mentality of any sportsman when your ‘own’ fans don’t support you for whatever reason. Especially with this being his first game. Lets not turn into Yankees fans.

Consequently you’re one of my new favorite Angel F-Rodney, seeing as most people NOW love Aybar (I always did, never could understand the problems with having a flashy, young SS) after not liking him pre-2009 season. Win people over Rodney, you can do it!

I'm with you.

The Rockin’ Rodney Fan Club exists (lol)…however tenuous that existence may be at this time.
But inducing the perfect double play ball was nice….

Consider me a member of the Rowdy Rockin' Rodney Club of Fans

Two of us! Two of us!

Yes... and there's at least 4 of us in HH--the numbers are growing exponentially

“Rockin’” because he reminds me of a rad R & B rock ’n roll wildman, like the lead singer of a band I partied with in a jazz club in St. Louis last week. He has a great look, even if he has trouble finding the strike zone—he looks good doing it.

Rowdy Roddy Rodney
Do we all meet up and wear our caps is a sideways fashion?
Did you miss the part...

where it was mentioned he started with 6 consecutive balls?

C'mon...

Did you miss the part in Merlin’s comment: “Especially with this being his first game”?
Baker started out really wild too, as did Jepsen who almost killed somebody with a 96 mph heater. “The jitters,” baby.
Still, I’d rather see Scotty in the 8th inning role…
Someone made a grat comment during one of the game threads about guys like Rodney having trouble finding the zone: it looks like “they’re throwing at moths”

that would be: "great"
But why do we need to have pitchers attacking Mothra when we have Godzilla?
I like to think of it as

“Exploring the strike zone” and “seeing what’s out there”

OK I'll buy that...
I love Scotty, but I can remember a few times he entered games and couldn't find that white five-sided thingie either...

;)

Ha!

I forgot the old six-ball boo. Surely the definition of small sample size if ever I saw it.

I boo, therefore I am.

Nice to see the win and Matsui contributing. Its still gonna take me awhile to fully like the guy……..he was a Yankee.

Gotta love Morales.

brandon wood is on pace to strike out 216 times this season.
Jeff Mathis is on track to hit 162 home runs this season...
thats exactly what is going through sosh' mind right now

should be good for a contract extension and eventually grandfathered into the organization a’la Quinlan

Wait til Q hits it out

oh, say, in June… (in AAA?)

I get 486
argh, your math is superior to mine.
That's what bothers me about Wood

It’s that he looks so bad on so many at bats, or should I say that he looks so good, while making absolutely no contact.

Nevertheless, don’t get me wrong. I still believe in Wood, until he gives me a definitive reason to not believe in him. Ask my opinion in July.

On a side note: Bobby's streak is over

Abre-ooo apparently had something like a 12-season streak going of getting a hit in the first game of the season—no mas. Too bad, he was in the top 5 I think.

He had the longest active streak in the majors. Oh well.

I was hoping the guys could put together a big eighth to give him a shot, but it’s not like the stat means anything anyway.

Sorta worried about Bobby...

shitty spring and shitty opening day. He’s seemed not his usual, confident-self at the plate all Spring and opening day didn’t really show him in a much different light.

Its a long season, though, hopefully Im just paranoid like one is about an aging parent.

300/15/100-bound
i'm just bummed his streak ended

13 straight years of hitting safely on Opening Day. I think Terry Smith said that’s the third longest in history and the longest of any active player.

great win!!

baseball played the way it should be… the angel way!!
loved the clutch 2 out hitting, & solid pitching and defense.

Kazmir is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

When he came to the Angels, the criticism on him was that he was injury prone.

Because he’s injury prone the Angels are probably taking extra precautions, which means he probably spends more time on the DL, than if he did not have any history of injury.

In the end, who really cares if Kazmir misses an April start. Much better in April than in August, September or October.

oh boy...that just means more Palmer time....
I like our new announcer

I was watching a few innings on replay after I got home from the game and actually heard him say some funny bad stuff about the yankers.

me too

I didn’t hear the yanker stuff, but Victor was good — good energy, good flow, and good knowledge.
