The strained right hamstring of Scott Kazmir will mean that Matt Palmer is the 5ht starter for the Angels to open the 2010 campaign. The Angels announced their opening day roster immediately following the final game of Spring Training Saturday afternoon.
As expected, the club will carry a 3rd catcher, Bobby Wilson, to accompany Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis.
Outfielder Terry Evans and Utility veteran Robb Quinlan will be in uniform in Anaheim on Monday night for Opening Day. Pinch runner Reggie Willits will also begin 2010 on the Disabled List with a strained right hamstring.
There were no radical departures from the Angels script after Kazmir's hammy strain, which seems to be closer to a mild tweak than to anything chronic. Fear of a cascade injury affecting the other already suspect part's of Kazmir's anatomy were likely as important in the decision to rest and rehab an ache now. The Angels system is known for taking minor tweaks seriously early in the season when it comes to its pitching staff.
ANGELS 2010 Opening Day 25-Man Roster:
Starting 5: Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Joel Piñeiro, Matt Palmer
Bullpen: Brian Fuentes, Fernando Rodney, Kevin Jepsen, Jason Bulger, Scot Shields, Brian Stokes
Catchers: Mike Napoli, Jeff Mathis, Bobby Wilson
Infielders: Kendry Morales, Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Brandon Wood, Maicer Izturis, Robb Quinlan
Outfielders: Bobby Abreu, Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera, Hideki Matsui, Terry Evans
Disabled List: Scott Kazmir, Reggie Willits, Chris Pettit, Anthony Ortega

why carry 3 catchers and why Robb Quinlan?
it seems Q’s spot could be used for a younger player. I dont understand 3 catchers.
imyhero - April 3, 2010
here is an example
Mathis catching all game, late in the game, DH Matsui gets a hit, he is the tying run. You pinch run for him. When it is time to DH again, you have Napoli bat in that spot and if something happens to Jeff … Wilson can catch without sacrificing the DH role.
Rev Halofan - April 3, 2010
but with Q on the roster he can catch.
imyhero - April 3, 2010
Ill just put my faith in Mike and his staff
imyhero - April 3, 2010
Because they know Wilson will be claimed...
…and I can see either Mathis or Naps being traded near the deadline depending on the scenarios present.
And like Rev said, it mostly right now allows Mathis to start the game and bring in Naps for a bat if needed (again depending on the scenario) while still having a backup.
RedFog - April 3, 2010
Q is worthless
Been through it all before. This is nothing more than Scioscia demonstrating his unwavoring faith that Quinlan has value.
Halowood - April 3, 2010
I agree
He’s completely worthless

Oh god why Q he sucks
I cant wait to see Palmer get that great run support
Q seriously
I hate that guy
DAD OF VLAD - April 3, 2010
i am still pissed at Q
Sosh you need to get over Q
he sucks and brings the team down
DAD OF VLAD - April 3, 2010
Oh dear God.
Why do we have to deal with Q making the team year after year? This has got to be a bad, late April fools joke.
Oh, and get better soon Kaz, we’re going to need you to be strong this year..
b0rd3rline - April 3, 2010
In a previous fanpost
someone mentioned Q’s service time being almost enough to give him a pension. Or something like that.
If Scioscia and the Angels are giving him a spot for that reason, I think it’s a classy move. Q has always been a class act and has played well at times. I’ve never seen the guy make an error at any position and he’s not completely worthless as a hitter.
I’d love to see Q get a huge, game-winning hit in the playoffs so he can go down in Angels lore, a la Spiezio.
Silence all the haters, Q!
tolbs1010 - April 3, 2010
If you want to reward Q for his service time...
…you give him a roving farm instructor position, or a front office job, or a media job.
You don’t let him rot in public on the field.
Turks Teeth - April 4, 2010
He will have one of those jobs
in the organization.
After he wins a playoff game this year with a walk-off hit!
tolbs1010 - April 4, 2010
So...
…what does this mean for;
Sandoval?
Budde?
Aldridge?
Ryan?
This is the end of the line for Budde, right? Unless he passes through waivers?
The other 3 get bus rides to SLC?
sothball - April 3, 2010
Budde wasn't out of options.
Wilson was.
halofan4life - April 3, 2010
All 4 to AAA
Rev Halofan - April 3, 2010
Ryan got dogged
mattwelch - April 3, 2010
It was Ryan, Aldridge or Evans. I'd love to know why Evans won out over the other 2.
When Willits returns, does he head back to SLC?
I’d guess when Kazmir returns, Palmer will head to SLC. Long relief will be Stokes and Bulger?
sothball - April 3, 2010
Ryan cooled off as ST continued...
…but I am still a big Ryan fan. Not sure why Evans either, but who are we to question the eternal wisdom of Sosh? (and he probably just asks Q what he thinks anyway)
RedFog - April 3, 2010
Isn't Evans out of options?
red floyd - April 3, 2010
yes
that is why he is here
Rev Halofan - April 3, 2010
Well there you go, Sothball
red floyd - April 4, 2010
No shit.
Quinlan over Ryan makes no sense. Even Cory Aldridge would be the better move.
Ryan and Aldridge are left-handed bats off the bench with greater power. Ryan plays all the positions Q does, with marginally better defense.
Turks Teeth - April 3, 2010
Q is the new GMJ
RedFog - April 3, 2010
I can't even discuss Q anymore.
I’d really hoped his utility role would have transferred to Sandoval. Not because I’m convinced he’d be better, but how do you know until he’s given a chance. If it didn’t work out, bring Q back from the Bees.
sothball - April 3, 2010
Bummed at Kaz?
Yeah. He’s on my fantasy team. ._.
Hopefully he’s just being babied. Eh.
Really wtf @ Q though.
TheKingfish - April 3, 2010
Hey Rev...
…maybe you meant the mispelling, but the OP says “…There were no radical departures from the Angels script after Kazmir’s hammy stain…”
I don’t know what they eat in ST, but it has to be pretty powerful to stain a hammy!
RedFog - April 3, 2010
nice catch
you will know someone hacked my account when there is nary a typo in the first published draft.
Rev Halofan - April 3, 2010
Kazmir to DL, and Sean Rodriguez to Tampa Bay's 25-man.
Q and Palmer on our 25-man.
Meanwhile S-Rod played largely LF and RF this spring, hitting .459 with 6 HRs and 17 RBIs, with 20 runs and a cool .500 OBP in 70 plate appearances.
Reality bites — for the moment.
Turks Teeth - April 3, 2010
La-la-la, I'm not listening
The Limey - April 3, 2010
This is the 15-day DL
This is temporary. But you can count me in the “I would rather have Brandon Wood be the player to be named later than Sean Rodriguez that the Tampa Bay Rays selected camp.” I am encouraged that Brandon Wood walked eight (8) times for the Angels in spring training this year. I am playing a Missouri “Show Me” game with Wood. Minor league records are the science fiction of baseball. I suspect Chone Figgins took the 2010 A.L. West first place flag with him to Seattle.
Yetijuice - April 3, 2010
Sean Rodriguez was the main piece in that trade for Kazmir.
The PTBNL were Matt Sweeney and Alex Torres. But I see what you are saying, that you would rather have traded Wood than Rodriguez at the time, as was my opinion, but I have since changed my mind about that.
44FAN - April 3, 2010
I still would have traded Wood over Rodriguez
TheAngelsColts - April 3, 2010
Me too.
But what we don’t know is whether the Rays would have accepted Wood for Kaz. For all we know, Wood was offered first.
Stirrups - April 3, 2010
I could see the Rays turning down Wood.
3rd and SS are pretty well covered there.
~MMP~ - April 3, 2010
And covered here too.
The Angels knew they were not going to pay Figgins his FA salary in the off season and had nobody as close as Wood to play third base where they still have quite a bit of depth at SS/ 2B.
44FAN - April 4, 2010
And if they knew that they weren't going to retain Figgins...
…it makes even more sense to retain Sean Rodriguez.
The overwhelming justification for trading S-Rod among the faithful was that he was blocked by our overwhelming depth in the middle infield. But that’s a bad take on S-Rod. He plays six positions, and was the obvious replacement to Figgins — not as a 3Bman but as a superute — with a different skill set, and serious power potential.
That’s why I point out that Tampa Bay was playing him a ton in the outfield. They knew what to do with S-Rod.
Turks Teeth - April 4, 2010
The team needed another SP more than they needed another utility player though.
Hence Sean being traded.
~MMP~ - April 4, 2010
Spring training records are THE TRUTH!
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - April 3, 2010
Q's pinochle game is mean!
Being part of Scioscia’s pinochle foursome keeps Quinlan in the major leagues! When Robb gets a hit he is the Mighty Quinn. When he strikes out he is Quinn the Eskimo.
My attending the April 1st, 2010 San Diego Padres @ Los Angeles Angels game completes six full months (April/May/June/July/August/September) on my 1962-2010 combined calendar that I have seen at least one game per calendar date. My combined calendar has me at a mlb game every date from March 28th to October 17th. All of the spring training games I have been to have been in Anaheim Stadium or Dodger Stadium. My road trips to Arizona (2007, 2008, 2009) were for April and May regular season games.
“Spring training records are THE TRUTH!” Everybody starts the season 0-0. Equality is at the beginning of the season. Economics, stadium, weather, and personnel all contribution to the inequality at the end of the season where there likely will be a 100 game winning team and a 100 game losing team. Truthfully now, how many of us want to see all of the teams within a couple of games of 81-81 in the final standings?
Yetijuice - April 3, 2010
And it's a hammy, not arm trouble...
…but it might get pretty bittersweet to read the box scores every day this season on a few counts.
I don’t want to root against Sean, Chone, Lackey (ok yes I do), etc. but secretly I don’t want them to do well. You want to feel that all the offseason moves (and Kaz from the later part of last year) look brilliant.
RedFog - April 3, 2010
Well, to be fair, he's had a hammy problem *and* a shoulder issue this spring.
And the hammy problem in the same leg that he had a quad problem that put him out all June last season.
Kaz is simply a bundle of tweaks, hurts and owies. I hope they can heat compress this guy into something usable by later spring.

I know he has a hot wife but do is doing something to Sosh to keep him around.
IDEA: Q has seen Sosh kill someone. Blackmail is the only reason for him staying around
DAD OF VLAD - April 3, 2010
or maybe..............
just maybe……….he’s a vet reserve there to help keep the youngish infielders in check…….there’s nothing wrong with Q being on the team in my opinion.
He wouldnt be on the team if he didnt provide something……..I’ll trust the man who has led this team to winning 5 out of the the last 6 AL West Titles………he knows his people better than we all think we do……..it will be okay.
norcaliangelsfan - April 3, 2010
There's a lot wrong with Q being on this team
We just gave a roster spot to a guy who’s old (34), on the decline as a hitter (striking out 26.1% of the time last year to go with that ridiculous .275 OBP & has steadily decreasing OPS for four years in a row now) and not much of a runner (14 lifetime SB).
But just look at his versatility as a backup fielder – Q can play four positions and he’s only below-average at three of them! UZR scores for his career have him being slightly below-average at 1B (-1.0), lousy at 3B (-7.9), mediocre in LF (-0.3), and slightly below-average in RF (-1.0).
There are better options out there than a guy, who fighting for his last chance to land a roster spot on the only team in the world that would give him a chance and yet still put up abysmal Spring stats of .176/.236/.255
Quad Fin Rider - April 3, 2010
and spring stats mean jack-crap when you are talking about a veteran baseball player....
especially one who will probably only play at most once or twice a week…….
It will be okay.
norcaliangelsfan - April 4, 2010
so what u are saying is
he is mickey hatcher, but can occasionally stand in the field and throw his glove around.
i like it!
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - April 3, 2010
"He is Mickey Hatcher"
The Halos are holding on to Robb Quinlan so that he can duplicate Mickey Hatcher’s 1988 power numbers: one (1) home run regular season and two (2) home runs in the World Series. First at bat in Game 1 of that World Series Hatcher homered off of Dave Stewart and he thought “maybe if I circle the bases real fast they won’t know who hit that.” I am not greedy. I will take one Quinlan home run in the World Series as an Angel. Heck, I will be easier than that. I will settle for one Q Halo World Series rbi. If it is a game winning World Series hit it is the gold standard. If it is a walk-off World Series hit it is the platinum standard. If it happens in Game 7 of the World Series the Mighty Quinn gets the rights to the discoverers claim for gold and platinum on the dark side of the moon.
Yetijuice - April 4, 2010
Q is no leader, he warms the bench for Sosh
If Q had anything to do with any of the Division titles i would have named my son Quinlan or Robbb but no i named him Vladimir. Becasue Vlad did something other then ride the bench and ground out on PH at bats
DAD OF VLAD - April 3, 2010
Of course I'm bummed about Kaz
There can’t be an Angel fan alive who would rather have Palmer in the rotation over Kazmir. Regardless, I’ll have some faith and assume that a easing him into the season will avoid any stints on the DL in the long run.
You will all eat your words when the Mighty Quin(lan) starts in the All-Star game over that money grubbing ass-hat Teixeira.*
*I’m drunk
Teixeira Who? - April 3, 2010
The Mighty Q
I’d venture to guess that he’s going to help hoist the “2009 Division Champs” flag Monday night.
I was thinking that if a lefty had been starting Q might have been named the opening day starter! That would have been the cherry topping on this Robb Quinlan turd cake.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Q got the start for a position in the All-Star team. And after the season, Q hits 40 HRs with 130 RBIs with 50 SBs and only 40 SOs. MLB chooses Rob Quinlan as AL MVP.

2002 was a career year for Quinlan. He spent the entire year with Triple-A Salt Lake and hit .333, posting career-highs in home runs (20), RBI (112), hits (176), and triples (13). He was named PCL Rookie of the Year, PCL MVP, and Anaheim Angels Minor League Player of the Year. He was also named a Triple-A All-Star, PCL All-Star, and one of Baseball America’s 1st team minor league All-Stars.

There really was some magic in Anaheim in 2002.
The World Series was one thing, but Q getting stats and awards like that? Geez..
b0rd3rline - April 4, 2010
All this talk about Q is simply overreacting.
There is absolutely no way Q has made the major league roster. Impossible that he would have made the squad in lieu of any other young talent, having a good spring and with nothing but upside.
It is just not happening. An April Fool’s joke. I know this for fact. LAASurfin promised me. He promised us all. It was just a simple, innocent minor league contract.
Stirrups - April 3, 2010
I think the Chris Pettit and Reggie Willits injuries have left Soth at the mercy of the Q. So, in that light, you can look at LAASurfin’s post as 100% correct: “it is only a minor league contract, unless there are injuries.” There are injuries to two of our highest ranking substitutes and here we are with Q on the 25-man roster.
Maybe the skipper just ain’t sold yet on Ryan nor Aldridge. If Q falters, I hope Scioscia would bring up one of those two spring training studs.
Downing Rules - April 3, 2010
It must be Spring. Easter even.
That can be the only answer for such hope, erstwhile totally unfounded.

Quad Fin Rider - April 3, 2010
Blessed are the vets poor in talent, for theirs is a spot on the roster.
Blessed are they that pinch hit, for they shall have a job forever.
Blessed are they they that field many positions, albeit mediocre, for they shall warm my bench.
Stirrups - April 3, 2010
Well shit and dump me in it
Ready for my public flogging, Sir.
I rarely drop the F-bomb in these environs but WHAT THE FUCKING, FUCK? Why is Q on this team AGAIN?
Downing Rules’ (appreciated) attempts to mitigate/mediate aside, I’m all red-faced with embarassment. While I understood the Q minor league signing as an insurance policy, better options ABSOLUTELY emerged through ST.
I’m fine with Bourjos and Sandoval being issued AAA bus tickets – it is arguably the right place for them to be. But, in my view (which has clearly turned out to be worth, well…shit!), Ryan EARNED the roster spot. I was highly skeptical of him as a 32-year old ‘phenom’ and said so in several posts. But as ST progressed it became harder and harder to deny Ryan’s game – and Q’s lack thereof.
I’m officially acknowledging an identified blind-spot in my fandom. I’ve grossly underestimated the in-dugout man-love hierarchy.
[hat tipped and bowing…]

angels4adam - April 7, 2010
Q making the roster makes me want to throw my computer to the ground
and punch holes in the wall. WTF did he do this spring, WTF has he done the past 3 years except OPS around 630 his last 500 some PA’s. I could maybe see it if Q was a great defensive player but his range on defense is the area he can fall down in, and he’s one of the slowest guys on the team so you sure as heck are never going to pinch run him. Also I could maybe see it if he was even a situational hitter but as mentioned the guy strikes out a TON and is only getting worse in that category.
MH252525 - April 3, 2010
As far as the past 3 years, he's been pretty consistent coming off the bench and that is somewhat valuable.
I disagree with him making the roster this time, because it seems like there were players who were much better options, but he hasn’t been worthless in the past.
~MMP~ - April 3, 2010
yea he's been consistently HORRIBLE
he had a nice 2006 I’ll give him that and since that point, his HIGH of an OPS was 652 and it has gone down each of the past two years.

Batting .166 coming off the bench as a PH the past 3 years is somewhat valuable, just not to us.
