Kendrick's bunt single in 9th helps Angels win - Sporting News
"I was looking at the infield and they were all back - even the third baseman," said Kendrick, who has a grand total of four sacrifice bunts in 379 big league games and none this season. "So right there I had it in my mind that in that situation, he was probably going to try to throw a strike on the first pitch.""The pitch was away, so I just went with it," Kendrick said. "The biggest thing is just to make sure you bunt it hard enough to get it past the pitcher. If you get it down and it works, then it looks great. If it doesn't work, then everybody's going, 'Hey, what's he doing?' But it worked today and we got the win." Video of the game's final play - Kendrick bunts home the winning run
And then there's this...
Kendrick gives Indians the short shrift - angelsbaseball.com
Kendrick's maneuver didn't sit well, though, with (Indians closer, Chris) Perez, who threw just one pitch and was the third Indians pitcher used in the inning. Joe Smith took the loss in his first decision of the year. "It was a bad baseball play that happened to work out," Perez said. "I don't want to say it was bush league. But you never see that. Ninety-nine percent of hitters in that situation would rather win the game with a hit, not a bunt. It was a stupid play that just happened to work."
I find Perez's quote perplexing. How could a play be a "bad baseball play" and be called "stupid" when it wins the game for your team? What would he say if he were on the other side of the bunt play? "Yeah, Valbuena laid down a nice bunt to win the game for us, but that was bush league. We shouldn't win games like that. In fact, I'd rather lose than win on a stupid play that just happens to work. Remember, it's more important to look cool, than win."

Mike Scioscia calls disputed call involving Hideki Matsui ‘mind-boggling’ - latimes.com
Mike Scioscia said he had never seen anything like it. No, the Angels manager wasn't talking about Howie Kendrick's ninth-inning walk-off bunt Wednesday at Angel Stadium, something of a novelty in itself. He was referring to a second-inning called strike on a pitch by Cleveland's Jake Westbrook that bounced and nearly hit Hideki Matsui. Matsui nearly fell down trying to get out of the way of the pitch, and replays appeared to show his bat crossing the plate. Home plate umpire Joe West asked for help from third-base counterpart Rob Drake, who ruled that Matsui had swung at the pitch. "He's jumping out of the way of it trying to get his balance and that was somehow construed as a swing," Scioscia said. " … That call was mind-boggling."
That was a weird call (here's the video from MLB.com - Scioscia is ejected for arguing with umps). The description for this video is "Mike Scioscia is ejected for arguing with the umpires whether or not Hideki Matsui was hit by a pitch", which is also what the Angels broadcasting crew thinks. Probably because it'd be too mind-boggling for the pitch to be called a strike.

Los Angeles Dodgers' Ned Colletti, Matt Kemp discuss comments - ESPN Los Angeles
Ned Colletti and Matt Kemp spoke briefly after the game about comments Colletti had made to a Los Angeles radio station the previous day in which he said Kemp's defense and baserunning were below average and wondered aloud whether Kemp might be too comfortable now that he has a new two-year, $10.95 million contract. Kemp, who has been noticeably prickly with the media all season, declined to discuss his conversation with Colletti or even to acknowledge that it took place. "I ain't got nothing to say about that," he said. Kemp's agent, Dave Stewart, reacted with shock on Wednesday to Colletti's comments. "When it comes time for Matt to arbitrate two years from now, we're going to look at that situation and do what's best for Matt," he said on The Mason and Ireland Show on 710 ESPN Los Angeles. "When it comes time for Matt to be a free agent three years from now, we're going to look at that situation in the same way as I would with Chad Billingsley, my other client on that ballclub.
What a mess. Within this article, Colletti says he wasn't singling out Kemp. That makes his comments better? Why would a GM make any negative comment about a player to the press? One reason...Colletti's a moron.
DH to be used every year in All-Star game - FOX Sports on MSN
There will be two extra All-Stars this summer. Rosters have been expanded again by commissioner Bud Selig's special committee for on-field matters, with each team bringing 34 players to the July 13 game in Anaheim, Calif., part of several changes coming to the summer showcase."I think they're serious about it being a true competition. To do that, if the game goes extra innings you have to be able to compete,'' said St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, a member of the committee. "This way you've got an extra guy you can protect.''
Holy crap, are the dugouts in Anaheim large enough to hold all those guys?

1902 - Baltimore Orioles infielder John McGraw is hit by pitches five times, but home plate umpire Jack Sheridan refuses to allow him to take first base. In the ninth inning, McGraw is hit for the last time and sits down in the batter's box in protest. American League president Ban Johnson will suspend McGraw for five games. Does anyone know the story behind this bizarre game? I bet it's a really good one.

Oh Shut the Hell Up Chris Perez
ryanfea - April 29, 2010
What I find amusing is that Howie seemed to be imitating the play that started the 9th for the Indians against Fuentes.
Granted that was to get on base not win the game with two outs, but what is the real difference?
Perez can suck it.

I'm glad Howie didn't walk over Chris Perez's mound after the bunt.

Ben Davis bunted to break up a Curt Schilling no-hitter a few years back.
And you would have thought that the world was coming to an end.
If Schilling gets electing, I’m certain that the first thing he’ll do is propose a law banning the bunt. Why is the bunt so hated? Get over it.
LazorkoRules - April 29, 2010
It was kinda different
If you bunt for the purpose of breaking up a no-hitter, in a game that you have little chance of winning, that is kind of bush league. In Davis’ defense though, I think Schilling had only a 1 or 2 run lead, so Davis was justified doing what he thought would best help his team win the game.
This is really, really weak by Perez. He has no argument whatsoever. If the Indians don’t want Howie to bunt there, they need to play the corner infielders in a bit. Simple as that. If they play back, it is good baseball for any reasonably fast runner to keep the defense honest with a bunt now and then.
RallyMonkey5 - April 29, 2010
It's not kind of bush league to bunt ever
it’s part of baseball. Even if Schilling had a 10 run lead with two outs in the ninth, too bad. A no hitter accounts for defense as much as it does a pitcher’s abilities anyway. And if the defense, including Schilling, fails to play for a bunt, well…boofuckityhoo.

agent_99 - April 29, 2010
Bunting to break up a no hitter is very lame
hauldog - April 29, 2010
Not nearly as lame
as a pitcher thinking he’s SO entitled to a no-hitter that the other team should fulfill his wishes by not doing everything possible to not carry the onus of having been no-hit. In fact, I can’t think of anything more obnoxious or lame than thinking you’re entitled to something at the expense of someone else, and that that party should therefore not be allowed to do something within the rules of the game to prevent it.
If you don’t like it, tell your defense to better play the bunt next time.
Besides, where do we draw this arbitrary line for when it is no longer acceptable to bunt to break a no-no? The 8th inning? 7th? 6th?
Caseys Kiss of Death - April 29, 2010
Not
What’s lame is not trying your very hardest to win the game until the very last out is recorded. Games have been won that were seemingly lost because, with two outs in the 9th, a player hustled to first on a comeback to the pitcher, who threw it away, leading to a big comeback and win for the erstwhile losing team. You ALWAYS play all out, and do whatever you can to get on base. That is how you play.
jjackflash - April 29, 2010
A no-hitter is
9 FULL INNINGS. If you have a no-no through 6, that doesn’t mean a team can’t bunt, because then you threw a 6 inning no-no and a 3 inning “the-other-team-didn’t-do-everything-they-could-have-to-get-a-hit inning.”
Figgi4life - April 29, 2010 via mobile
It was 2-0
and there was one out in the 8th inning. In other words, the successful bunt brought the tying run to the plate. Baseball is a competition; the object is to win. Since the bunt is a legal play, any suggestion that Davis was being “unmanly” or something of that nature is patently fatuous.

Hey Perez, you know if there’s one team in baseball that’s gonna try that play, it’s the team in front of you, you idiot, you moron. You might have caught this team’s act while watching the playoffs every year. They’re pretty famous for “Angels baseball”, a bunting, stealing, 1st-to-3rd, hit-and-run, opportunistic, ultra-aggressive, pedal-to-the-metal-and-damn-the-consequences style that wins games, divisions and World Series, are you the only MLB player not to know this? Only this team cultivates an environment where Kendrick makes that play (or scores two on a bunt, or steals home with Vlad at the plate, squeezes in the playoffs, etc. etc., Angels-only plays). Your team cultivates. . .what? No wonder you’re pissy. And what is the depth of your stupidity if you’re beat by a “stupid play”? Way to go! Complete ignorance of the opposition AND letting everyone know it got to you! Next time we’ll try bunting Kendry or some other “bush league” play and make your brain explode. You’re not using it anyway, esp. when opening your big mouth.

Most of them are saying the same thing, what Perez said was wrong but most admire him for saying it…
Then there’s this…
“In the bottom of the 9th inning, light-hitting Felix Fermin (batting 9th) drew a walk, leadoff man Oddibe McDowell sacrificed him to second, and Jerry Browne hit a slow roller to Cal Ripkin at short, he was out at first but Fermin made it to third base. So it’s runner on third, two outs, and Joe Carter comes to the plate. He was the Tribe’s big power threat that year, with 35 homers, 32 doubles, 105 RBI. Baltimore was playing him a bit deep, and he surprised everyone in the ballpark by dropping a bunt single down the third base line and beating it out. The stadium erupted, and I’ve never heard a happier player on the post-game show than Joe Carter that day.”
Props to the Indian’s fan who pointed this one out…

Baseball isn't in a context-free vacuum
at its core, he’s arguing balls and strikes, yes. But considering the absurdity of the situation, an umpire cannot possibly REASONABLY assume that his decision, made one time out of maybe 10 million, will not be met with skepticism and harsh criticism. If you’re going to have the balls to make one of the most bafflingly stupid calls in baseball history (even if the magnitude is inconsequential), you must also have the balls to handle more than 3 seconds of criticism before you eject someone over it.
Caseys Kiss of Death - April 29, 2010
Did you see Scioscia's quote?
Downing Rules - April 29, 2010
true
He has a very good point. Honestly did he REALLY make an attempt to go? Its not like he tried to hit that pitch. So what did the ump want him to do? Stay in the box and get hit? Matsui wanted to get outta the way so he could hit and he probly didnt wanna get hit either tho. But who would?
M.Napoli For President in 2012 - April 29, 2010
But ...
If the batter is resting the bat on his shoulder, and a pitch is coming at his head, squats then has the ball hit the bat. That batter must run if the ball lands if fair territory, or will be called for a strike if it lands foul.
Matsui was standing in the box at the time his bat is fair game to all the rules of the game. I’m defending the umps. They can interpret the rules as they see fit towards the play on the field. But they don’t want to set a precedence, they just want to show presents.
I believe that the umps blew this call by not taking into consideration to the actions in the box at the time of the call, which the rules state they clearly can.
eyespy - April 29, 2010
But I believe the rule states something about "offering"
And I doubt he was offering.
red floyd - April 29, 2010
Couldn't find offering, but this I did
A STRIKE is a legal pitch when so called by the umpire, which — (a) Is struck at by the batter and is missed
Matsui obviously didn’t strike at the pitch, but his bat did cross over the plate in a swinging fashion. The umpire crew can discuss these types of rulings, but they never do.
Rob Drake was probably thinking that it wasn’t strike three, and it was a no contest call. They didn’t even check to see if the ball hit Hideki.
eyespy - April 29, 2010
According to baseball rules
there is no actual objective criteria by which a swing must be determined. We all talk casually, and so do commentators and others, about “the wrists breaking” or “the head of the bat crossing the plate,” or any of that nonsense, but none of it is in the rule books. This leaves the call completely at the discretion of the umpires, and leaves the basis for such a call as something that should hinge on hitter intent and restraint.
In Matsui’s case?
1) The intent is quite clear: not to swing, but to bailout. There is zero reason to believe intent to swing.
2) You can’t fault restraint either, as he didn’t ‘fail to restrain’ his swing, so much as he had no concern for the bat’s movement as his legs literally kicked out from under him.
So, in all, we’re back to where we started: a bullshit call made with zero basis.
Caseys Kiss of Death - April 29, 2010

Hafner pulled a TRUE BUSH LEAGUE play on the bases loaded HBP
He made no attempt to move out of the way of the pitch and was hit to drive in a run. That was weak sauce right there. He was in an 0-2 count, so he knew that the best way to get on base was to “take one for the team.” Good play, though, as the umps will never call “batter made no attempt to get out of the way.”

I hate the "batter made no attempt to get out of the way" call anyway
First of all, in the once-every-ten-years event that it gets called, all it does is serve to create a shitload of animosity when one side inevitably erupts in the “WHAT THE FUCK YOU CAN’T START CALLING THAT NOW” argument, which is a completely legitimate gripe.
Second of all, we don’t need more subjective criteria thrown into a game already bogged down by bad calls made in regards to OBJECTIVE criteria.
And third, if you’re a pitcher, and you’re throwing so poorly as to put the ball in a position where it could conceivably make contact with a player, why the fuck is the onus on him to bail your ass out so he can be rewarded with only a ball instead of a baserunner?

I would hate that Pierzynski was the one who did it
but I wouldn’t hate Pierzynski for HAVING done it. Then again, Pierzynski doesn’t have the speed to do it, either.
I hate Pierzynski for crap like his “HBP” earlier this month, which is actually borderline cheating, and because he’s a belligerent selfish asshole, not because he’s aggressive and a so-called “heads-up” player.
Anyone apologizing for Pierzynski is doing so SOLELY on the basis of the uniform. The man is a disgrace. Anyone apologizing for Kendrick’s play, 95% of all fans, are doing so because there’s no reason he shouldn’t be trying it.

Consider this:
The fact that the Indians allowed the winning run to score on a BUNT SINGLE with two freaking outs is Bush League, or better – retarded. I think they’re just butthurt at the fact that the Angels showed just how bad the Indians really are. Any other team would have been smart enough to anticipate “Angels Baseball” and adjust their defense.
Gotta agree, though, if Pierzynski had bunted a walkoff RBI single against the Halos, I’d be pissed, but that’s just because Pierzynski is the Antichrist.

When NFL refs screw up, they later admit it and apologize.
Did Drake admit to totally screwing up the call? Did he apologize?
When will MLB quit covering up for incompetent umps?

Quote from article in Long Beach P-T made me laugh...
“With manager Mike Scioscia long gone after his second-inning ejection, bench coach Ron Roenicke and third-base coach Dino Ebel acted like brothers taking the family car out for some stunt driving. "
Brightened up an otherwise dull day for me.

Ode to Howie's Walk Off Bunt
His perfect bunt was more than luck
Though Cleveland fans said “What the F…K?”
But the Indians weren’t intelligent
against the Halos, they were negligent,
and played the hit like five John Kruks
(alright, a little slack for the “s” please)
Raaddad - April 29, 2010
Last night Howie watched his TV
And “Major League” was the DVD
Howie bunted like Taylor
Without any failure
And the Halos had victory

Ha! let the games begin!

I heard that Perez shed a tear
with teammates and media near
I thought “thanks for the pitch,
you blabbering bitch,
go cry in your locker, not here”
The_Legend_Of_Wilfong - April 30, 2010
With two outs, Kendrick did bunt
And so kept his team in the hunt
“Not Fair!”, Perez cried
“No one does that!” he tried
But everyone know he’s a [runt]
red floyd - April 30, 2010
*knows*
red floyd - April 30, 2010
Yea, I like "runt" in brackets, Red...
I was playing with that word (and it’s replacement) and the rhyming scheme at one point, but wasn’t sure how to pull it off
Raaddad - April 30, 2010
Or, A haiku.
A bunt with two out
Perez is unhappy now
We lit the halo
red floyd - April 30, 2010
How about my Haiku
Fuck You Chris Perez
Fuck You Christopher Perez
You Fucker, Perez
Caseys Kiss of Death - April 30, 2010
you can't rhyme in a Haiku
and if you rhyme things you can’t rhyme perez with perez

Caseys Kiss of Death - April 30, 2010
