Angels enjoy satisfying series victory over Yankees - LA Daily News
Bobby Abreu got the Angels rolling in the third inning with a solo home run to right off Javier Vazquez to bring the Angels within 3-1, and Kendry Morales sealed the victory in the seventh with a two-out, three-run shot off of Damaso Marte on a 3-0 pitch. The switch-hitting Morales, who homered batting right-handed, reached base in all four at-bats. He went 3 for3 with two singles and a walk in concert with the homer, his sixth of the season. "With a right-hander coming up we knew that (the Yankees) were going to make a change no matter what," Scioscia said. "That's why we allowed Kendry to swing away in that situation. "His power has improved quite a bit from that side of the plate, even if it hasn't shown up in the stats so far."
Here's some video of Morales' home run. The first is the New York clip focusing on the decision not to intentionally walking Morales (Morales makes the Yanks regret a decision). This one (Morales blasts a three-run homer) has Angel broadcaster Victor Rojas' home run call..."Kendry Morales, the Cuban Missile, with a 3-run Jimmy-Jack!". Although I'm not quite sure what a Jimmy-Jack is, I like it.

Indians-Angels Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
Hitting a major league-worst .223 overall, Cleveland has been outscored 34-15 while losing four of six. The prospects for an offensive revival don't seem strong Monday against Angels starter Jered Weaver (2-0, 2.77 ERA), who has given up three runs or fewer in all four of his starts. Weaver is 2-1 with a 4.17 ERA in eight career starts against the Indians, with the most recent the most impressive. He notched his second career shutout Aug. 19 at Cleveland, scattering seven hits and one walk while striking out three. He'll be opposed by Cleveland's David Huff (1-2, 3.00), who has sandwiched a pair of losses this season around a complete-game effort of his own - a 3-2 win over Texas on April 15. The left-hander lost at Minnesota on Wednesday, giving up four runs and walking a career-high six in six innings as the Indians fell 6-0. Huff has faced the Angels once before - a 7-6 loss in Anaheim last July 28, when he yielded five runs in seven innings.
Weaver's record would be 3-0 had it not been for the blown save by Brian Fuentes against the Tigers last Wednesday.

Wood's big hit sparks rally for Angels - angelsbaseball.com
"I was excited," Wood said, having unloaded on Vazquez's first pitch to send Juan Rivera and Howard Kendrick home. "I wanted to be aggressive, look for something I could handle and hit it hard. It's the first time other than a defensive play I've done something to help the ballclub. "I don't know if I got a monkey off my back. I haven't felt there was one there. I've tried to keep my cool, keep things in perspective. I wanted to get off to a great start and prove to everybody I belong here, replacing a guy [Chone Figgins] who last year was an All-Star. "I've had slumps before in the Minor Leagues, but this is a big stage. Hitting a baseball's one of the toughest things to do in sports. That's one hit and two RBIs. I've got a lot of work to do to get me out of this."
Video of Wood's first RBIs of 2010 - Wood's double gives the Angels the lead - Not trying to rain on his parade, but Thames didn't make a very good play on Wood's hit, but who cares...hopefully this is the beginning of a more comfortable batting approach for Wood.
Angels' Hunter still conflicted about home-plate collision - LA Daily News
"Man, (Wilson) was right there next to the plate; the ball bounced up and made him go backward," Hunter said. "I don't know. The plate was open. You can look at the tape over and over and say the play was clean or it was not right. Baseball is baseball." A half inning after the collision, Hunter bumped Teixeira after beating out an infield single. Hunter was asked if that was his way of saying a little "hello, I know what you did" to his former teammate. "I can't tell you that. I'm running up the line, what was I supposed to do?" Hunter said, quickly wiping a wry smile from his face. "The ball bounced away from him and he fell forward into me." It was Hunter who got the worst of that exchange too, taking a shot to the jaw.
Weird baseball contract clauses - CNN.com
4. Red Sox buy John Lackey insuranceIf Lackey misses any significant time due to surgery on a pre-existing elbow injury during the first five years of the contract, the Red Sox gain a club option for the 2015 season in which Lackey would have to pitch for the major league minimum salary.

1969 - The Baseball Records Committee decides to give Babe Ruth credit for one more home run during his career for a total of 715. The committee rules that one of Ruth's home runs had been incorrectly ruled a triple. The committee will later reverse its decision, returning Ruth to a total of 714 home runs.
1986 - The game between the California Angels and Minnesota Twins is delayed for nine minutes when strong winds tear a hole in the Metrodome roof, causing suspended lights and speakers to sag toward the field. A couple points about Victor Rojas:
1. I like how when he mentioned the Yanks were coming to town that it was payback time.
Physioc would never have said that. He would have hyped up the Yankees telling us all how great they are. I love Rojas’ enthusiasm.
2. I love when a pitcher leaves the game with runners on, how he says they are leaving with property at 1st and 2nd for example.
Again Phys never said anything cool or quotable. That is my new favorite saying for runners inherited. Property. You’ve got to love it.
So I am very happy with Mr. Rojas. The guy is professional and very smooth on the mic.
Monkeyspanked - April 26, 2010
I'm digging Victor...
I cannot express how much better he is than Phys…
I’m not a fan of Gubie but he’s more entertaining this year than last and I credit Victor for this…
I still miss Hud…
Jietoh - April 26, 2010
A Victor Hud combo would be, by far, the best Announcers possible
PhiSlamma - April 26, 2010
Yes...
I like this. Someone get PhiSlamma’s people in touch with Arte’s people so they can work this out.

Thames play on Wood's double was pretty bad
but that’s exactly what he needs to regain his confidence. He has hit the ball hard a few times right to outfielders so maybe if a couple of those balls start falling he can turn things around.
Epic Dean - April 26, 2010
Yeah, Victor's (possibly unintentional) comment on the MFY zone was better than anything Phys ever said in all his years.
red floyd - April 26, 2010
Still not sure about Victor.
I do think he strikes a good balance between homerism (*cough*whitesox*cough*) and sheer balance(*cough*Scully*cough*), but he’s still erratic.
I think that with time, he’ll be good.
red floyd - April 26, 2010
You can't compare anyone to Scully.
There is ONLY ONE Vin Scully. And it’s unfair to Rojas to do so.
halofan4life - April 26, 2010
I wasn't comparing him to Scully as an announcer.
I was using Scully as one end of the homer-ism spectrum.

He has a snarky side that I appreciate, the little digs he makes at opposing fans when we’re on the road…

Not a fan of the Jimmy Jack nor the Big A as a "baby" ...
but he is growing on me slowly but surely.
Downing Rules - April 26, 2010
Yea not a fan at all of "Light that baby UP!!"
I liked classy Rory and I know Rojas is trying to put his on take on it, but screaming that into the mic after the final out just sounds bad. Probably too late now, but I’d like it if he came up with something different.
The OC Disorder - April 26, 2010
My bad, "light up the halo" was Fizz not Rory
I still liked Rory’s “just another angels victory”

He needs to stop calling K-Mo the Cuban Missile
Everyone knows the Cuban Missile is Alexei Ramirez. I guess it is hard to think up nicknames that are cuban related besides The Cuban Cigar or The Cuban Sandwich. Someone should tell him to use his actual nicknames. Kowbell, K-Mo, Bam-Bam and whatever else there is.

Abreu's HR was a moonshot!
I was sitting two sections over from the tunnel towards the back and it came down almost directly in line with or a little behind my row. If only he’d been a tad later on that swing, I might have had a shot at the ball.
Also, thank you Torii for the new quote.

my reason being sometimes him and Gooby play footsies together and giggle and chuckle just a little to much. But, my two favorite calls by him, which Fizz the Whiz would’ve never made, are
1. “Ervin Santana just won the battle of the handlebar mustaches”
2. In regards to a pitcher lobbing the ball to first base Rojas said, “Looked like the was throwing a grenade to first base.”
That is the kind of stuff I love to hear out of an announcer. Keep it up.

Gubi and Rojos spend half the broadcast time giggling and chuckling to each other at their own little jokes that are funny maybe 2% of the time. I have to mute them and turn on the radio by the second inning. I am developing a wonderful rapport with Manny Mota.

Rev,
With the advent of Youtube, etc. it would be nice to see a video archive section for all of our favorite Angels moments over the years. Or does this already exist?
That video of Morales belting the three-run Jimmy-Jack and Girardi scratching his head is priceless. It must be immortalized, lest we forget.
This is the manager of a “supposed” World Champion team. Showing visible signs of distress. Now compare that to the poker-face of the Soth and you’ll see what I mean.

Rev Halofan - April 26, 2010
No, I just meant to link to the content.
Doesn’t MLB archive all of this stuff?
3rd Echelon - April 26, 2010
MLB would be all over that like stink on shit
It’s hard to do anything nice like that because of the copyrights on all things MLB. The only way you might be able to get away with it is you film it yourself with some 2 mega pixel video camera tilted like and old Batman episode. Even then if it gets to many hits you risk the chance of it getting taken down.

J WEAV Express - April 26, 2010
MY feelings on Victor are that it is great to have someone who actually knows the game. Phys was HORRIBLE about quoting bad stats or saying stupid stuff. Victor gets heat for talking about other teams sometimes, but I think that’s because of where he just came from. He seems to be trying to fit in and doesn’t have any history of calling Angels games, so he has to talk about the accomplishments of other teams to make a point sometimes. I like him. I REALLY wish Rory was here. Rory was the PERFECT man for the job, but Victor is a professional, is good and a HUGE upgrade of Phys.
firebird81 - April 26, 2010
*I* would be a huge upgrade over Phys, and I've never done *any* broadcasting of any sort.
red floyd - April 26, 2010
yeah
when people talk about Rojas speaking too much about other teams you have to remember that he just left the MLB Network where he was required to talk about and be concerned with every team
ryanfea - April 26, 2010
Talking is one thing
PRAISING is another. And Phyzz could sure PRAISE the Sucks, and Skanks, like he was in an interview for a new job.
eyespy - April 26, 2010
I am wondering about something
Maybe I’m remembering wrong, but I could swear that I heard last year that Moralles had more power from the right side of the plate but was a better hitter left-handed, which was the reason he sat against lefties so much last year.
Am I remembering this wrong, or does anyone else remember this.
billhune - April 26, 2010
I think you're remembering it wrong
For his career Kendry has 44 HRs from the left side, and 8 HRs from the right side. His career BA from the left side is .291, from the right side .272.
foxpaw - April 26, 2010
Yea
but he has 3 times more at bats left-handed than he does right handed, so of course he is going to hit a lot more home runs left handed.
billhune - April 26, 2010
True
His HR/AB ratio is still higher from the left side though. Likewise his SLG, .534 lefty and .445 righty.
foxpaw - April 26, 2010
