Angels Win Fifth Straight, Top Tigers 6 - 5

TUESDAY'S SCORE IN ANAHEIM:  Angels 6, Tigers 5

The knock against the Angels starters was that there was no ace, but with Scott Kazmir's winning performance Tuesday night, the Angels starters have won 5 consecutive games and are now over .500 (8-7) for the first time since opening day.  Making just his second start of the year, Kazmir pitched into the 6th inning striking out 7 and walking none.  Showing excellent command of the strike zone, the Angels starters have issued just one walk over their last 37 inning.

Maicer Izturis, starting at third base in place of struggling Brandon Wood, started the scoring with an one out single in the second inning to drive in Kendry MoralesHowie Kendrick followed with a double to left scoring both Juan Rivera and Izturis.

With the bases loaded and no one out in the fourth inning, the Angels were only able to score one run.  Howie Kendrick drove in the lone run with a ground ball to short, and that was followed by an inning ending double play from Mike Napoli.

The Tigers scored three runs in the 7th after Scot Shields walked the bases loaded and Miguel Cabrera hit a bases clearing double to bring the Tigers within one run.

Fernando Rodney recorded his 5th save of the season, allowing just one hit.  The two out infield single was the first base runner Rodney has allowed since taking over the closer duties for injured Brian Fuentes.

What no place to vote NAPS?
+-1

Naps=BOTG and Panther.

Fernando Rodney!

Where would we be without this guy?

RODNEY BABY!!!

  I am a believer!

what a great name

+1

Dear Soth:

Please keep Rodney as closer.
And let Fuentes work his way back as the set-up man ;)
Sincerely,
HH
(yea, I know….no chance…)

Can't you have two closers?
maybe we can trade fuentes

for granderson?

Ok..how would that work?
same way with two wives

two different cities

we have two closers and we could have ten I suppose if we wanted to.
losing your job via injury is shady.

although… i’d roll with this just because of his masterful performance vs. a-roid in the post season last year.

Winning record

great game by kaz and howie. 5 wins in a row, one game out of first.

This is Angels baseball

Light it up!

Btw, Grichuk hit his first HR tonight for Cedar Rapids.

Lakers lead series 2-0

close game. Doubt the Lakers will sweep the Thunder.

That was close!!!

I think you’re right—Thunder are a good young club

they got 17 blocks.

They can play some D.

Fortunately

so can we (when we feel like it)

Most were on Kobe

He can’t jump like he used to :(…….

Even the sharks won tonight

just another festivus miracle

this is one where i believe rodney should get panther honors, he shutdown what was a emerging tigers offense

Time to DFA Shields

Luckily we keep winning in spite of him.

shields is the greatest setup man of the past 10 years

he should stay in the 7th inning role

thats the inning that he stunk up
did you not read the top of my post?

give the guy respect

People, and skills change

I’m a great big One T fan. Wish him the best during every outing. But for the last three seasons. He has been losing it.

Come back good Scot, banish the Evil one.

i hate change

his movement on the ball was magic i loved it
now he is a shell
just give him the respect to pitch a few times and when his contract is over we praise him as the greatest setup man ever

I don't mind change
his movement on the ball was magic i loved it

Do you mean his Superman impersonation of Up, Up, and Away?

now he is a shell

Correct, of his former self. To bad he’s not a hermit crab, or maybe he is. And he crawled out.

just give him the respect to pitch a few times and when his contract is over we praise him as the greatest setup man ever

And have him cost us the division, or the playoffs, for now. I don’t think even Scot would want to be kept around for sentimental reasons. He must love this team more than any of us, and wouldn’t want to be the reason.

did you just use my word agaist me?

catch the fever

eyespy is like a little wet booger that you just can't get to flick off your finger.
Uh ..... nevermind

your the best 44FAN

Use this, it works on babies

I said your finger.
I'll just shake 44FAN's hand, then if that doesn't work

pat him on the back

and if that doesn't work,

tickle his ass

Remember to watch the game

that’s all folks

*was

This is a game of what have you done for me lately.

Give Shields time

DFAing Shields is not fair considering what he’s done for us

and Bulger, and Stoked (possibly)
That's a bit bloody premature...

…he was out for a year – at least give him the chance to play his way into some form.

If you keep Speier for half the season last year, then Shields is going to have to be historically bad to get DFA’d.

Agreed.

DFAing shields is crazy talk.

Yet sending him out there in critical situations might be just as crazy… Scott needs to get his groove back and I’m sure sosh will give him an opportunity to do just that.

How scot got his groove back?

Jamaica + inning pitched + good movment – bitches complaining = sexcess for Scot

Mice Tits had a very good game too.

But I voted for Kaz.

Rodney = Panther

No way Halos win this one if anybody else had closed instead of him

Nostradamus?
If he also can throw a 96mph 4-seamer, him too
Kaz lowered his ERA to 7.45...

Pantheresque baby.

"girl it could'nt get much higher, try to set the night on fire, try to set the night on fire."
i thought it went

“girl i am so much higher, i want to set you on fire, set you on fire”

And you probably think Jimi sang, "'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy"
It's

Girl WE couldn’t get much higher, isn’t it?

Yes.

Morrison’s poetry and lyrics is among the best in rock and roll history, and we owe it to him and The Doors to get it right. For example, I posit “Crystal Ship” as one of the most beautiful and original lyrical love ballads ever penned.

"one of the most beautiful and original lyrical love ballads ever penned"

It wasn’t “Backdoor Man”?

My favorite Jim Morrison line of poetty

“ALL I KNOW IS THAT I WANNA GET MY KICKS BEFORE THE WHOLE SHITHOUSE BURNS DOWN”

Very Bukowski-esque

In his own way

Mathis not looking too chipper in his interview right now on the post-game show.
Lets just be glad

We have plenty of depth at catcher. We have Ryan and Conger in the minors but neither one is ready for the show. Having Naps and Wilson on the roster will off set the loss of Mathis. I do feel bad for the guy though. He was having an amazing year so far.

He'll be back
Oh I am glad, very glad, if I got any more glad I would be...
holy crap it was freezing @ the game tonight

Kaz looked good on the hill. Bulger seems to love to clean his plate when pitching (letting all of his inherited runners score), Shields was all over the place, as was Palmer at times. Izzy looked great at the plate and with the glove, Howie was awesome, AND i got an awesome looking calender, pretty decent quality. LITE IT UP

Chilly out there tonight...

…but a good game to watch.

I can’t see a true Panther tonight. There were quite a few cubs out there.

Kaz was very good, and if it ended up 6-2 or so he’d be the guy, and Kendry’s night was Carew-like (I hope I don’t have to explain why that’s a minor dis). Howard is the best choice, given the poll options.

Matsui’s hit was big too, and he’s more deserving than K-Mo.

But Fernando Rodney won this game and stopped what no other reliever did, and thus is Panther. He turned the game around!

Shame about the rest of the bullpen, though.

I don't get it.

Why does it matter if the game was 6-2 or 6-5 when talking about how good Kaz pitched tonight? After the 2 runs (And it’s almost tough to pin those on him), he has nothing to do with any other runs scoring. Therefore, if he was patheresque when the score was 6-2, he should still be when its 6-5: his performance didn’t change.

Stop talking sense. It just confuses people.
Wrong!

It’s not about the “absolute” performance, it’s the “relative” performance. In this game, Kaz’s performance mattered less than the bullpen’s because of the close score.

Think of the Leverage Index, and follow along with my words:

In a close game, the bullpen’s contribution has more impact on the outcome. It was the 9th inning where this game was won, not the first 5. Though it’s not Scott’s fault the bullpen sucks, and he didn’t make the game close, his performance (as it turns out) was not as important as the ’pen’s to the bottom line.

Adam J. Morris quote about the Rangers 7-6 loss to NYY tonight. Pretty funny coming from him.
This game epitomizes what it seems to be to be a Ranger fan. Because hey, we stole 9 bases, that counts for something, right?

It is like the Josh Hamilton Home Run Derby nonsense, where a meaningless performance as part of a meaningless precursor to a meaningless exhibition was treated like Reggie’s 3 homer game in the World Series. Topped off by the fact Hamilton didn’t even win the stupid Home Run Derby anyway.
I thought the skanks were at choakland tonight 44.
They lost to the Sux

What's the weather like in Hawaii this week?
cool, and partly; sunny; cloudy; rainy

regular Hawaiian weather

Stupid volcano in stupid Iceland.

We’re supposed to fly to Dublin a week from tomorrow. Considering an alternative trip if it’s cancelled.

Aloha, and tell me if you come this way

I’ll be on vacation, and will be in Waikiki with the family. It is probably the best time of year to come. All beaches have waves to view, and there is nobody to view them.

We're also considering staying home, but I'll let you know if we head that way.

Never been to Hawaii but my husband has some family there: his grandfather’s sister. I think she’s 97.

Heathrow is now open
I saw that.

This morning Dublin is open, so there is hope now. I read that planes were taking a route with a lower altitude, to fly under most of the ash, and now there are winds that are dissipating the ash more quickly.

tis a lucky day

full of elves and unicorns

And magical surprises.
Kind of like what we had here today.
cool, but not cold.

80’s during the day, 70’s at night. But I live in the middle of the island of Oahu where it never gets really hot all year round.

Oh. It was a bit colder than that today.

Going up to the mountains tomorrow to do a little maintenance on the cabin. Supposed to be snow down to 3500 feet tonight.

is that late in the season to do so?

and where is this cabin located ?

It's a bit late for snow, but it's snowed in May more than once.

The cabin is in Blue Jay, and it’s tiny. We may live there for a while, until we find a house we want to buy.

Is the snow getting that low tonight?

Where’s your cabin at? The San Bernardino mts.?

Yup. Blue Jay, about a mile from Lake Arrowhead Village.
That is pretty high up.

I can’t remember, is Blue Jay higher than Green Valley Lake?

No. about 5300 at Blue Jay.

Green Valley Lake is a lot higher, 7200 feet

Good thing you avoided Crestline.

Us flatlanders used to refer to Crestline as “The San Berdoo of the mountains.”

I know.

We did make an offer on a cabin that needed a lot of work. Could have been pretty nice, but it was a short sale and while we were waiting for the bank to get around to talking to us, we found this other cabin that we ended up buying. It was a regular sale. It needed some work but was basically sound, and we’ve been restoring it and enjoying it. Living in it will be a test of the marriage, though. It’s really small.

I meant to say that the first cabin was in Crestline.
So you're right at the reason for the very existence of the Angels.

Remember, Autry went to STL to get the radio rights for the expansion club, because O’Malley unceremoniously cancelled his contract when he couldn’t get KMPC in the mountains.

it's a small world
It annoys the heck out of me that when the sun goes down our radio station fades.

For two years we have walked down the road to Borderline in Blue Jay to watch the games in the bar, and they just moved to Cedar Glen. Rats.

If the house is sold, though, we’ll get cable at the cabin. We don’t have that right now or the intertubes .

Exactly--drives me crazy!

I can’t get the station well in Van Nuys for crying out loud

*Ranger lost to the Red Sox.*

Red Sox – Yankees what’s the damn difference.

Come to think of it bro,

There ISN’T a damn difference between the two. One is The Evil Empire, and the other is a Sam Adam’s swilling, Spencer for Hire loving, bandwagon wannabe.

about 20-some-odd rings

That’s the difference.

There is that.
Panther (but no points :(

It’s the same thing

The second definition made me laugh.
Have you ever read any of his stuff?

I dodged that bullet in high school, and then read some voluntarily a few years later. Some of it gave me nightmares.

No

heard of him, and thought it might be a good idea to not touch them. I only read funny books that I can finish in less than four sittings. Adams, Pratchett, Ruff. Or some shorter SF types. No a heavy reader right now.

Pratchett!!! Saw him in Arizona at a convention last summer.

Lots of fun. My husband went as The Tourist. We built an iconograph, complete with imp.

He still doing Okay

got Alzheimer or something I heard

Early onset Alzheimers.

He is slipping a little bit but still writing. I am re-reading Going Postal right now. It has been made into a movie for television but was not aired on Easter as planned. Don’t know what the holdup is, but the clips I’ve seen look really good.

The Ringworld series

is great the bestest. But I haven’t gotten much time too read the rest after that. Only reading a few of them.

I had Death’s voice with a Jamaican accent even before seeing “Billy and Mandy”.

Uh, Ringworld is Larry Niven (my son works for his son).

Discworld is what you’re thinking of.

Your that best 44FAN.
Bulger got squeezed against Inge ...

0-2 was a strike. Ump blew it and then the inning went to hell after that.
(just watching the replay now, as I couldn’t see too well from P239)

Inge has those great scroll script tattoos on his forearms.

Athough he does’nt look like the type to have that sort of thing.

Soth on Shields:
"What we’re seeing in Scot is nothing different than what we’ve seen at times before. But it’s not related to his knee or missing any time last year," Scioscia said. "He just has a high-maintenance delivery that has a lot of deception in it. Right now it’s obvious that he’s a little out of sync. So Scot’s going to have to work through this. When you look at the big picture, we’re definitely going to need Scot Shields effective."
why not send Scott down to Salt Lake and work out the bugs?

Hell, why not let him start a few games down there? I wouldnt risk a major league ball game because of these issues.

+1

Let him experiment with his delivery problems there rather than in ball-games that can count against the big club. At 6-2, though, maybe Scioscia thought it was enough of a cushion to let Scot get some work in.

I was really impressed with Kazmir tonight. He did a good job rebounding from his bad first start.
He said in his post game interview that getting those early runs put up by the offense really

lit a fire under him to not let the team down while at the same time allowed him to relax and just pitch his game. Funny how divas pitchers think about things like that.

Bullpen Woes and Finally Some Good Brandon Wood News

Halo bullpen is terrible, but a win is a win…Wood finally had a good game – riding the bench seems to stop his constant strikeouts…

Fernando Rodney would like a word with you.

RE: “Halo bullpen is terrible.”

So here's what happened last night...

I figured I’d wind down 4/20 in the traditional fashion and do little more than get loaded and watch Donald in Mathmagicland. But just before I leave work one of my bosses (most of which are redundant, like in Office Space) walks into our section of cubicleland and asks if anyone wants Angel tickets for the evening.

I had never had access to my company’s suite before, which it turns out is not silver, is not gold, but rather platinum.

My view was therefore only comparable to Gooby’s. And when it was too cold, the better half could go inside and watch the entire thing snugly from behind glass doors. Also, I would normally give some thought or contemplation to timing my bathroom trips just right for optimal utilization and minimul game-absence. Except last night there was a private bathroom in the damn suite. Right there. And couches and everything.

Being a little person, I don’t know if that kind of lightning will ever strike again. But that experience has spoiled me for any other game. That is the only way to fly.

Wow. Just wow.

The one time I’ve been to any game in a suite was in Oakland, and that was not a great experience. Someone mr pie worked with invited us, the “catered” food was basic ballpark stuff: lousy hotdogs, potato chips and soda. The view was poor, way down near the end of left field and the space itself was cold and damp.

There was no private bathroom.

To bad it wasn't Matsui night
And when it was too cold, the better half could go inside and watch the entire thing snugly

gie from inside. then you could have been outside.

what company do you work for? Just curious....
That would've been my first question

But I omitted that part, partly because my boss appears to be cyberstalking me. Not amorously, of course, but possibly to gather evidence in case he needs to can me some day. He found out from my twitter, for example, that I have abused the copy machine.

Did you gut a fish on top of your TPS reports again???
No stapler, no peace.
You're my hero.
Pitching staff is getting to where they should be

as is the rest of the team playing up to where they are capable of…..except Torii & Bobby. Abreu looks like he’s fat and happy with no motivation to play hard. And Torii looks like the G.A. we traded away.

Torii needs an enema.

no trade

just market

Yeah when abreu let the ball bounce off the wall I got the feeling his days in RF should be just about over

Seriously, Abreu catches that ball and it stays 6-2. He is about as good defensively as matsui.

Yes.

Mike Scioscia and Matt Palmer might have taken heat for the MCab at bat but the problem was Abreu.

While MCab did hit it fairly deep, it was not a line drive double like the one Matsui hit earlier in the game. There was no way anybody was going to catch Matsui’s hit. But MCab’s flyball stayed up in the air long enough and was very catchable. Inexplicably, as Abreu ran towards the flyball he slowed down .

Problem was Shields too, he did load the bases
hey

What a difference a week makes!

Izzy deserves to play...

I started this missive before Brandon when fish’n
