TUESDAY'S SCORE IN ANAHEIM: Angels 6, Tigers 5
The knock against the Angels starters was that there was no ace, but with Scott Kazmir's winning performance Tuesday night, the Angels starters have won 5 consecutive games and are now over .500 (8-7) for the first time since opening day. Making just his second start of the year, Kazmir pitched into the 6th inning striking out 7 and walking none. Showing excellent command of the strike zone, the Angels starters have issued just one walk over their last 37 inning.
Maicer Izturis, starting at third base in place of struggling Brandon Wood, started the scoring with an one out single in the second inning to drive in Kendry Morales. Howie Kendrick followed with a double to left scoring both Juan Rivera and Izturis.
With the bases loaded and no one out in the fourth inning, the Angels were only able to score one run. Howie Kendrick drove in the lone run with a ground ball to short, and that was followed by an inning ending double play from Mike Napoli.
The Tigers scored three runs in the 7th after Scot Shields walked the bases loaded and Miguel Cabrera hit a bases clearing double to bring the Tigers within one run.
Fernando Rodney recorded his 5th save of the season, allowing just one hit. The two out infield single was the first base runner Rodney has allowed since taking over the closer duties for injured Brian Fuentes.

I don't mind change
Do you mean his Superman impersonation of Up, Up, and Away?
Correct, of his former self. To bad he’s not a hermit crab, or maybe he is. And he crawled out.
And have him cost us the division, or the playoffs, for now. I don’t think even Scot would want to be kept around for sentimental reasons. He must love this team more than any of us, and wouldn’t want to be the reason.

Raaddad - April 20, 2010
That's a bit bloody premature...
…he was out for a year – at least give him the chance to play his way into some form.
If you keep Speier for half the season last year, then Shields is going to have to be historically bad to get DFA’d.
The Limey - April 20, 2010
Agreed.
DFAing shields is crazy talk.
Yet sending him out there in critical situations might be just as crazy… Scott needs to get his groove back and I’m sure sosh will give him an opportunity to do just that.

Morrison’s poetry and lyrics is among the best in rock and roll history, and we owe it to him and The Doors to get it right. For example, I posit “Crystal Ship” as one of the most beautiful and original lyrical love ballads ever penned.

We have plenty of depth at catcher. We have Ryan and Conger in the minors but neither one is ready for the show. Having Naps and Wilson on the roster will off set the loss of Mathis. I do feel bad for the guy though. He was having an amazing year so far.

44FAN - April 20, 2010
holy crap it was freezing @ the game tonight
Kaz looked good on the hill. Bulger seems to love to clean his plate when pitching (letting all of his inherited runners score), Shields was all over the place, as was Palmer at times. Izzy looked great at the plate and with the glove, Howie was awesome, AND i got an awesome looking calender, pretty decent quality. LITE IT UP
BigBangRobbDawgg - April 20, 2010
Chilly out there tonight...
…but a good game to watch.
I can’t see a true Panther tonight. There were quite a few cubs out there.
Kaz was very good, and if it ended up 6-2 or so he’d be the guy, and Kendry’s night was Carew-like (I hope I don’t have to explain why that’s a minor dis). Howard is the best choice, given the poll options.
Matsui’s hit was big too, and he’s more deserving than K-Mo.
But Fernando Rodney won this game and stopped what no other reliever did, and thus is Panther. He turned the game around!
Shame about the rest of the bullpen, though.
LittleCupcakes - April 20, 2010
I don't get it.
Why does it matter if the game was 6-2 or 6-5 when talking about how good Kaz pitched tonight? After the 2 runs (And it’s almost tough to pin those on him), he has nothing to do with any other runs scoring. Therefore, if he was patheresque when the score was 6-2, he should still be when its 6-5: his performance didn’t change.
b0rd3rline - April 20, 2010
Stop talking sense. It just confuses people.
opiejeanne - April 20, 2010
Wrong!
It’s not about the “absolute” performance, it’s the “relative” performance. In this game, Kaz’s performance mattered less than the bullpen’s because of the close score.
Think of the Leverage Index, and follow along with my words:
In a close game, the bullpen’s contribution has more impact on the outcome. It was the 9th inning where this game was won, not the first 5. Though it’s not Scott’s fault the bullpen sucks, and he didn’t make the game close, his performance (as it turns out) was not as important as the ’pen’s to the bottom line.
LittleCupcakes - April 21, 2010

opiejeanne - April 20, 2010

eyespy - April 20, 2010
It's a bit late for snow, but it's snowed in May more than once.
The cabin is in Blue Jay, and it’s tiny. We may live there for a while, until we find a house we want to buy.

Good thing you avoided Crestline.
Us flatlanders used to refer to Crestline as “The San Berdoo of the mountains.”
halofolife - April 21, 2010
I know.
We did make an offer on a cabin that needed a lot of work. Could have been pretty nice, but it was a short sale and while we were waiting for the bank to get around to talking to us, we found this other cabin that we ended up buying. It was a regular sale. It needed some work but was basically sound, and we’ve been restoring it and enjoying it. Living in it will be a test of the marriage, though. It’s really small.
opiejeanne - April 21, 2010
I meant to say that the first cabin was in Crestline.
opiejeanne - April 21, 2010

Let him experiment with his delivery problems there rather than in ball-games that can count against the big club. At 6-2, though, maybe Scioscia thought it was enough of a cushion to let Scot get some work in.

Halopauly - April 21, 2010

RE: “Halo bullpen is terrible.”
Downing Rules - April 21, 2010
So here's what happened last night...
I figured I’d wind down 4/20 in the traditional fashion and do little more than get loaded and watch Donald in Mathmagicland. But just before I leave work one of my bosses (most of which are redundant, like in Office Space) walks into our section of cubicleland and asks if anyone wants Angel tickets for the evening.
I had never had access to my company’s suite before, which it turns out is not silver, is not gold, but rather platinum.
My view was therefore only comparable to Gooby’s. And when it was too cold, the better half could go inside and watch the entire thing snugly from behind glass doors. Also, I would normally give some thought or contemplation to timing my bathroom trips just right for optimal utilization and minimul game-absence. Except last night there was a private bathroom in the damn suite. Right there. And couches and everything.
Being a little person, I don’t know if that kind of lightning will ever strike again. But that experience has spoiled me for any other game. That is the only way to fly.
Zoe Necrosis - April 21, 2010
Nice!
cath619 - April 21, 2010
Wow. Just wow.
The one time I’ve been to any game in a suite was in Oakland, and that was not a great experience. Someone mr pie worked with invited us, the “catered” food was basic ballpark stuff: lousy hotdogs, potato chips and soda. The view was poor, way down near the end of left field and the space itself was cold and damp.
There was no private bathroom.

Yeah when abreu let the ball bounce off the wall I got the feeling his days in RF should be just about over
Seriously, Abreu catches that ball and it stays 6-2. He is about as good defensively as matsui.
Balls and Strikes - April 21, 2010
Yes.
Mike Scioscia and Matt Palmer might have taken heat for the MCab at bat but the problem was Abreu.
While MCab did hit it fairly deep, it was not a line drive double like the one Matsui hit earlier in the game. There was no way anybody was going to catch Matsui’s hit. But MCab’s flyball stayed up in the air long enough and was very catchable. Inexplicably, as Abreu ran towards the flyball he slowed down .
