Luis "Lucho" Jimenez makes a strong throw across the diamond.
I'm catching a Kernels' series this weekend and have collected tons of footage to share (as soon as I figure out the editing software). Here are some initial observations:
- Mike Trout looked like the best player on the field for either team this weekend. Funny to see this link (hat tip, G Abbes), because there was nothing cheap about the three hits he's collected over the past two days. Even his outs have been loud. His speed is game changing (triple, stolen base, and he took two bases on a routine passed ball... he just kept on running).
- Luis Jimenez looks great at third. He made a highlight real diving stop yesterday, booted a routine grounder today, but above all else is making strong, accurate throws with his surgically repaired shoulder. I still love the bat, and think he's back on track.
- Garrett Richards has overpowering stuff. He struggled with his control today, but racked up 8 K's anyway, mostly with just his fastball. He threw a couple of really good change-ups against lefties, which is a great sign, and his slider/curve combo looked awesome in warm-ups.
I was all set to see Fabio Martinez Mesa pitch tomorrow afternoon, but heard he's been scratched. They raced him to the hospital the other night thinking his appendix was about to burst. Turns out it was just bad pork. He'll be fine, but we'll have to wait to see him pitch. Maybe he'll toss a bullpen session tomorrow, and I can catch that.
I'll have the usual minor league report, encompassing all of the Angels' affiliates, up by tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks,
Ryan! This is great…Can’t wait to see the footage!

Any idea why
Tyler Skaggs missed his scheduled start?
G Abbes - April 18, 2010
He should be filling in for Fabio Martinez Mesa tomorrow

I'll keep up The daily fanshots. Just statistical analysis
I rarely get to see many games and I don’t think I want to order milb.tv because they don’t show too many Angels minor league games and my wife’s already jealous of the Angels. I don’t need her jealous of the Kernels too lol.

Just out of curiosity....
The draft is coming up in a couple of months and the Angels look like they’ll have one as strong if not stronger than last year’s draft, which was very strong. Do you do any work about guys you’d like to see the Angels draft or who you think we should have our eye on? I can’t wait to see what we get with our 18th pick. The Angels haven’t had a pick that high since…. I dunno, 2004?
I wonder if we’ll make a play for Josh Spence again. I was really hoping we’d sign him.

Speculation only...
I like to keep up to date, but that just means reading other people’s stuff — Baseball America and Andy Seilers’ website, mlbbonusbaby.com, tend to have the best coverage.

Stephen's great about sourcing his data
So I assume it’s true. If that’s a “slump” for Trout, then he’ll be in great shape…

Mike Trout
Is quite the exciting talent. I’m glad I got to see him playing with the big team in spring training. He looked like he belonged, amazing for an 18 year old kid.
I saw that post about 13 infield hits (at the time he had 14 total hits, and one was a triple) and it seemed impossible to believe. Was that a pure mistake or maybe relying on a bad data source?

Stephen's great about sourcing his data well.
So I assume it’s true. If that’s a “slump” for Trout, then he’ll be in great shape…

Great reporting!
Thanks!!!

"Bad pork," huh?
Tragic. That’s how the Jays lost Sal Campusano back in the 80s.
