Ervin Santana Magic Brings Angels Broom

Final Score in Toronto: Angels 3, Blue Jays 1 ... Pitcher Ervin Santana battled with Toronto lefty Ricky Romero for 8 innings, most of it shutout ball. Romero was coming off an almost no-hitter against the White Sox and dominated the Angels the first time through the batting order. Hot Howie Kendrick broke up the no-no in the 4th and in the 6th Hideki Matsui drove in Erick Aybar to end Romero's shutout bid. Reliever Scott Downs surrendered 2 runs in the top of the 9th, assisted greatly by a Lyle Overbay defensive miscue.

Santana was 1 strike away from a shutout when Adam Lind hit his 2nd HR of the series to make it 3-1 Angels. A visibly upset Santana sneered and got Vernon Wells to line out to CF Reggie Willits to end the game. It was Santana's 6th Complete Game and the Angels first sweep of the Blue Jays since 2004.

Santana needed just 106 pitches to do it all. He did benefit from a generous strike zone provided by home plate umpire Jim Wolf, but the wide corners were consistent for both pitchers and they both fed on the fat of the plate often. Were you on the Game Thread today? Check below...

Santana might be the Panther this game
SWEEP OF THE SERIES

  MMM "Toronto"

Wicked game by Santana.

Flash back to 2008…let’s hope we get more flashbacks throughout the year.

Even Wood showed a sign of something good

he got a lucky hit, but that’s cool – he hit the ball hard…he made a very nice play at third, as well…plus he hit the ball hard again in a fly out to the track…great series – we needed it…now the Tigers tomorrow…

Lucky hits are hits too. And great defensive plays are outs.
Now it's just Kaz's turn!!

Godzilla also had a great game igniting what there was of the Halo’s offense

Again

It’s YoYo tomorrow

yes dear--but Kaz is the next in line to get his shit together--whadahmtalkin'bout

albeit after Pinehead does his job tomorrow

Don't you speak like that to me

I’ll beat you worse than DOVs wife beats him

Sh...t--even Baby Vlad beats him

(projectile baby vomit)

this morning it was

projectile poop……WORSE

sorry--Wife of Raaddad is always correcting me too

but that’s the wife’s job my grandfather used to tell me:
To tell us where we went wrong

No

Repeats allowed!

TMZ

strikes again

Willits looking like a Navy Seal there.

Actually, Willits in the nine-hole seems to be working for this club. Small upgrades in speed, defense and situational hitting worth the displacement of one power hitter in the lineup.

Probably worth rotating Willits and Izturis at the bottom of the order as the results of the Wood experiment roll in.

How looks evil

like a black Cheshire cat

That would be "Howie"....
Two very buff individuals.....

I need to shave my head and go to the gym for 6 hours now….

So three amazing starts from our starters

Key stat this game: Walks

Our 3 pitchers combined for only 1 walk this entire series. This is very very important (I’m looking at you Kazmir).

Hell of a game by Ervin Santana

Ervin’s fastball in the 1st inning was 92 mph. His fastball in the 9th inning? 92 mph. Even though he wasn’t in the mid-90s, the fact that Ervin’s velocity was so consistent start to finish is pretty awesome.

i feel like kazmir is alot like santana

either really good or terrible

except

Kaz has not shown us any good yet

One Start

Really?

and last season
Last season

Kazmir went 2-2 with a 1.73 ERA in 6 starts.

If I remember correctly...

he was outstanding in most of his regular season starts for us. He just choked in the playoffs.

Agree; his regular season performance with the Angels (though limited) was very encouraging
  • Kazmir’s fastball with the Angels during those six starts averaged 92.5 mph
  • solid K/9 rate of 6.44 and decent BB/9 rate of 2.48

If he can demonstrate what he did last September, Kazmir will be fine.

K rate is a bit low

seeing as he led the league in Ks in 2007 and has a career average of 9.3K/9

I'm wondering if various injuries in 2009 have taken their toll

He no longer appears to be the high strikeout pitcher of 2006-2008. I’ll be happy if he can be get his K/9 rate back to around 7. A return to his previous form would be tremendous.

i just wish

he would quit nibbling – every batter goes 3-2 it seems.

I hear that's what they say about Trout--he's always "nibbling"

hardyharhar

Keep your day job.

Leave the bad stand-up comedy to me.

I suck at my day job too
dont we all

i blame the economy on my poor job at work and my beating wife

Just teach baby Vlad to throw the 2-seamer early

or work on his golf swing
(I think I’m getting slap-happy with the sweep this weekend…)

it is true

he has been slapping alot lately
he slapped my wife’s face and i said to her
“Did you see that smooth arm action”
She said, “your son just slapped me.”
“but it was fast and smooth, i got to get him a ball to throw”
I predict a future All-Star pitcher and i will be riding that coat tail

have him become a .300 hitting shortstop

and he’ll win the Gold Glove

or just play for the Yankees

and hit .250 and he will voted into the All-Star Games

Never, never ... undercut the power of the pinstripe.

With a stat like that HOF fer sure dude.

He was pretty good last season...

(…until the play-offs)

did we not get him

for the playoffs ?

We got him because we knew Lackey was gone in the offseason
Exactly, he was a 2010 replacement not necessarily an Ace in the hole for the playoffs.

But I’m sure they were hoping he’d continue his great pitching against NY when we faced them.

his record agaist boston and New york

was the main reason for getting him
and Lackey is a horse faces bitch

Interesting

Is he a “horse-faced bitch,” or does he transmogrify into many “horse faces,” like the Hydra with her 7 heads

Why do you think he never closes his mouth

If he did his other faces would suffocate

He looks more like a big guppy

or demented Sea Bass or some sort of aquatic monstrosity

he has an alian faces in side his mouth

Rec’ too bother

did you watch the same season last year that I did?

I love that Santana wants to do interviews in English.

Quite right...
That's how you can tell he feels he's having a good/great season...

He doesn’t deliberately spite the media for “twisting [his] words”—see 2007.

Now we just need to work on Matsui, Izturis, Rivera, Aybar, Morales, and Jeff Mathis.
Heh, Jeff Mathis.

Win.

He has a hottie wife to tutor him
My only regret is that because I've been listening to these games on my iPhone, there's a 2 minute or so delay.

So I don’t get to join the game day threads without spoiling everything for myself. What a series! 1 game south of .500, and the team is looking great.

Just read the game threads on a two-minute delay. Scroll very slowly!
Can't wait to get back to night games.
I'm quite a fan of the day games myself!
I just keep saying ....

pinch runner, Mike Napoli …. pinch runner, Mike Napoli …. pinch runner, Mike Napoli …. pinch runner, Mike Napoli …. i am trying it with different accents.

Well at least now I know why he is still with the team.

LOL--I thought that was why they were keeping Q (before he was sent down)

Byw, is it just me, or does anyone else miss Q? Just a little….?

i do. we can use him in relief pitching spots instead of stokes or shields.

yea, and he's fun to goof on
precisely

just look at him. he even spells his first name in a comically pleasing way.

+1

i have been waiting for Rev to add the spot for Naps

seen that on my phone at work and did a ...

WHA-WHA-WHAAAAAAAT!

i dunno...

Ervin’s gem lost a lil of his luster with that HR sarcasm meter: 10 hell of a game and hell of a series. Pinata and Kaz need to come up big on this homestand to make this turn in the rotation completely Pwntastic

I feel the awesomeness started with Pinata's turn on Wednesday

Had a blip with Kaz’s rust for his first post-DL start/first start of the season, and the continued the awesomeness through the weekend. Now let’s have a repeat from Pineiro and a wake-up from Kaz!

A good day in the AL West

Angels won.
Mariners lost.
Athletics lost.
Rangers lost.

Finally. Things are getting back to normal.

It's funny

usually we head north of the boarder and really stink up that country with our play. This series was a great relief for no only the way we headed up there , but for finally maybe exercising the ghost of White Castles past.

Way to go Halos

Now let's go tame some Tigers.
ok--whose the wise guy

who bet we would get 50 hits today????

you would be surprised how many more people are able to even fill out the form this year than last year.
Are the numbers up on HH all along the board?

Of course, the quality may be suffering as a result, I mean with these damned “Dad” guys and all (lol)

what the hell are you talking about?
Easy now--You suggest that there are more folks "filling out the form this year"

1. I’m asking if the overall numbers for HH participants are up?
2. Then I goofed on myself, DOV, and other so-called Noobs
Sorry for the ambiguity, my friend; don’t pull out the .44 on me….

he cannot pull ut his .44

it is pinch running!!!!!

by the end of last season we had had over 300 participants int he Pregame picks, an all time high. We have 225 registered players 13 games into the season.

the numbers will get bigger as the season progresses…

Cool...thanks
sorry I did'nt mean to sound cross

Last year scottnak had a heck of a time with people not even able to fill out the form correctly, their name, typing their answers in the box and hitting the submit button. I got to be a bit of a running joke until scottnak finally started omitting/banning people from the game because they were just screwing up all the time. That is what I was referring to, people this year seem to be taking to the entry form for the picks with greater efficiency and comprehension. Your response just did’nt make sense to me. Sorry.

No probs

We “new kids in town” always like to gain insight about the long-running jokes trivia, creation myths, etc. It’s an honor to be a part of this community and we appreciate your patience with us and your sharing of communal stories and wisdom. I’d love to buy everyone a round of Panthers on the 15th at Throwback’s ,but with the way my wife spends all my money, I might have to settle for a cup of good imported tea for Rev and go from there….

Nice to see the Halos get the sweep today.

Voodoo looked great, B Wood was hitting the ball hard and Matsui is doing a good job DH’ing. Good game from beginning to end, next up Motor City. Well, it used to be motor city, now, not so much.

I have a question re the Pregame Picks

Forgive my ignorance, but I am a total n00b when it comes to the finer points of betting. I understand how points are gained when one wins, but when one loses, does he lose the same number of points? For example, today I bet 25 points and won, and since the multiplier was 10 I gained 275 points. If I had guessed incorrectly, would I have lost 275 points?

no

just your 25.

jut like Vegas but not money and no hookers at the table after your panther points either.

Thanks for smartening up this chump

From now on I’ll be much bolder with my bets!

Altho hookers at the table would be…..interesting,

In fact, forget the panther points
Panter Points buy hookers?

what can i get for 30 points?

10 minutes with Lackey
