Final Score in the Bronx: Angels 5, Yankees 3...
Joel Pineiro pitched 7 strong innings and Fernando Rodney got his first save with a Halo as the Angels suffocated the Yankees in front of their B-List 2nd game of the season daytime crowd. Two ex-Yankees - Juan Rivera and Hideki Matsui - helped their former team by going a combined 0 for 8 and stranding 8 runners, and even though former Pinstriper Bobby Abreu gave his exes some help when he was caught stealing 3B in the top of the 3rd inning, he had already driven in the 2nd run of the game and finished the afternoon with a 2 for 5 effort.
Five Angels had an RBI apiece in the game, Erick Aybar scored twice and Brandon Wood had a month's worth of foul ground web-gem-age. Rodney was making an appearance as closer due to Brian Fuentes going on the disabled list with a sore back. Kevin Jepsen pitched a valiant 8th inning of relief after Scot Shields had started the frame allowing three consecutive baserunners.

Xeifrank - April 14, 2010
Joel Pineiro
was so solid. He looks like our #2 guy right now.
Slyintine - April 14, 2010

Wally's World - April 14, 2010
Some jerk that plays in Boston
ryanfea - April 14, 2010
Yay
I was following on ESPN.com, but it stopped updating once Rodney came in. I was wondering what happened.
jessthelion - April 14, 2010
you didnt check out my link

Still not used to this message board. Anyway to delete it?
jessthelion - April 14, 2010
Nope. That’s the unfortunate part of SBNation.
Slyintine - April 14, 2010
i could delete it
if i wanted to. But… i kind of like the echo effect … this time!
Rev Halofan - April 14, 2010
Nope, your embarassement is preserved for all of eternity.
Commander_Nate - April 14, 2010
haha nice
TheAngelsColts - April 14, 2010
Wood should be a choice
He did make a couple good foul catches. And it looks like he’s working on his swing.
Slyintine - April 14, 2010
Listened to the top half of the 3rd inning on the radio
Mota was praising Wood for his improved swing during the AB and reiterated that it would be some time before he settles into his comfort swing
blast21dave - April 14, 2010
Wood has a better batting avg than Tex right now.
deb d - April 14, 2010

DFA Tex
AlanFalcon - April 14, 2010
only struck out once, and even got a stolen base!
Wally's World - April 14, 2010
Haha yeah.
I like how Terry put it: “Wood is taking Figgy’s spot, he’s tied for the team lead in stolen bases this year!”
AlanFalcon - April 14, 2010
Pineiro by a land slide
To go into that stadium as a #4 and face that lineup and shut them down the way he did…good stuff.
ReggieBullits - April 14, 2010
Helps to be a GB pitcher in that stadium apparently
Xeifrank - April 14, 2010
Would never have guessed that lol
TheAngelsColts - April 14, 2010
Fuentes DL could be a blessing
if he comes back and has lost his job as closer to Rodney. Depth will suffer while he is out tho.
vr, Xei
Xeifrank - April 14, 2010
It could also spell no vesting and no automatic contract extention.
But I’m not worried about that at all at this point.
AlanFalcon - April 14, 2010
This was my first thought when I found out a second ago
TheAngelsColts - April 14, 2010
I think the vesting is a non issue
Fuentes needed 55 games finished. Between not pitching from opening day to his new DL stint, I don’t think he has a chance even if he comes back and keeps the closer job for the rest of the year. Last year, leading MLB in saves, he only had 57 games finished. His career high is 58. He had no wiggle room there, he ain’t getting 55.
Angel closer for 2011 will be Jordan Walden. You read it here first.
RallyMonkey5 - April 14, 2010
I like Walden as a closer.
But don’t you think Jepsen should get first crack at it?
halofan4life - April 14, 2010
Pinero for Panther
Also glad to see wood flashing the leather and getting a hit. I think he’ll be a lot more comfortable in the batters box tomorrow. Unless you guys are still willing him to st. lake
RexTookMyStash - April 14, 2010
He is outta options it's do well with the Angels or Bust.
deejayelleseven - April 14, 2010 via mobile
I'm definately staying out of the GDT tomorrow.
When im not there were 2-0
Gotta do whatever it takes to get some more wins.
Great start today from Pineiro.
SMDH @ Shields.
deejayelleseven - April 14, 2010 via mobile
Pineiro definitely.
~MMP~ - April 14, 2010
Scoscia must have Mathis on his fantasy team or something.
Xeifrank - April 14, 2010
Mathis is hitting .333
and looking good behind the plate too.
Brody - April 14, 2010
20+ at bats
and he is on pace for 20 HRs. I think Napoli needs to play more.
vr, Xei
Xeifrank - April 14, 2010
Scioscia always plays the hot hand
When Mathis starts cooling off Naps will get in there more.
foxpaw - April 14, 2010
This
Downing Rules - April 14, 2010
Leading hitter on the Halo's
wft?
Raaddad - April 14, 2010
Thats why I have him on My fantasy teams. Had Nap in the begining but with him getting no at bats I had to make the move.
TheAngelsColts - April 14, 2010
yeah, Mathis is doing well though...
However, I feel like we should at least try and get Naps some AB’s via the DH spot. Maybe when Matsui plays left or if Abreu needs a day off to rest his old age.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - April 14, 2010
The problem with Fuentes on the DL is the lack of lefties in the 'pen...
or rather COMPLETE lack.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - April 14, 2010
Sooo?
ryanfea - April 14, 2010
Not a first
for an Angels bullpen

Pineiro
What a dominant performance. That was exactly what the team needed. I give credit to almost everyone on the team — except Shields, obviously, and Matsui, who has struggled in NY — for the way they played today.
Shields, what the hell??
Brody - April 14, 2010
I just hope the other teams aren’t paying attention to whatever it is the NY pitchers are throwing Matsui.
AlanFalcon - April 14, 2010
Nerves probably have something to do with it
Torii talked about how difficult it was for him the first time he went to Minnesota, and how difficult it likely would be for Matsui to go to New York, before this series began. I am not surprised by the results.
Brody - April 14, 2010
That's exactly what I thought of when I saw Matsui's performance today...
Although, he’s got to be a cool customer to have played in NY that long and have to deal with all that media/fan frenzy.
Downing Rules - April 14, 2010
Can't wait until he gets his
mag’s, and video’s, back from his old team
eyespy - April 14, 2010
Pineiro
looked great today. Wood looks better at the plate too. Looks like the Angels are starting to put it together.
AngelKeith - April 14, 2010
Shields
It will not happen immediately, but might we at some point in the next month or two lose our last remaining link to 2002?
Brody - April 14, 2010
Shields
is done.
Scioscia will ride him for a few more months though.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - April 14, 2010
Shields
after today, I doubt we’ll see him in the 8th inning for a while. But I’m not sure he’s done yet. Sometimes it takes a little while to get into a groove. Scioscia is a patient man.
RallyMonkey5 - April 14, 2010
Pound for pound
Stokes and Shields were two of the worst relievers last year. Although Shields didn’t pitch much and was hurt, his performance has continued to be horrid. Shields at least has a history of being good, Stokes won’t be on this team come August.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - April 15, 2010
Wood showing signs of life...
he got my panther vote even though Pineiro was dealin’. “A” for effort, Brandon.

Talking Points
Fan Since 1981 - April 14, 2010
Jepsen's control was shaky, according to Terry Smith...
He was even bouncing fastballs … that led to Mathis getting a lot of action behind the plate.
Downing Rules - April 14, 2010
He was overthrowing a lot
Epic Dean - April 14, 2010
^ Yes ^
Which resulted in a lot of “wild” pitches Mattress had to jump in front of to save runs. Can’t understate his role. Awesome job behind the plate today – and I’ve never been a Mathis fan.
LAASurfin - April 14, 2010
That's part of PsyKo's strength as a pitcher
Semi-controlled blazing wildness.
Reminds me of how our catchers always struggled to catch K-Rod and the crazy sinker/slider of his in the dirt. Scary, bewildering, effective—WITH a good catcher
Raaddad - April 14, 2010
Yup something good
Good news is one of the A’s or Mariners are gonna lose. Bad news is they can’t both lose.
RallyMonkey5 - April 14, 2010
Voted for Jor-El, but I think PsyKo should get some love for cleaning up after Shieldsy shit the bed.
red floyd - April 14, 2010
Do you guys realize that
This is the very first game in which we HAVEN’T given up an HR?
red floyd - April 14, 2010
nice fact
mahalo
eyespy - April 14, 2010
oh
and to not have one happen any game in Yankee Stadium is fantastic, and that don’t happen often.
eyespy - April 14, 2010
Yup. The number of HR's given up by the Angels so far this year has been unusual.
I refuse to use the “L” word, but the Angels inflated ERA this year is largely due to an out-of-the-ordinary number of flyballs that ended up becoming HRs. Hopefully things “normalize” in a good way for the Angels like they did today. :)
Fan Since 1981 - April 14, 2010
Also the only non-Weaver game we've won!
Teixeira Who? - April 14, 2010
I went with Rockin Rodney as co-Panther
Fuentes is suddenly out, Rodney has to now be the man, he’s been struggling most of his games, taking lots of heat for that, comes in the ninth inning to protect a 2-run lead, up against the champs—and he comes through bigtime in a big time arena. A clutch performance.
Scotty Shields looked this way at the beginning of ther season—what was it 2 years ago? Or was it last year before he went on the DL.
Raaddad - April 14, 2010
when we signed Rodney
all the Tigers fans kept saying that as a closer he was good, but when he was asked to pitch in any other role he sucked balls. so far it seems they were spot on in their assessment
2pintsofbooze - April 14, 2010
We beat the Yankees, no thanks to the A-hole umps trying to get the Yanks back in it.
Halowood - April 14, 2010
I missed that
what do you mean exactly?
Raaddad - April 14, 2010
Squeezed strike zone at inopportune times...
Downing Rules - April 14, 2010
That's exactly what I mean...
It just comes with the territory when playing in Boston or New York. They’ll conveniently miss a call or two right when the game matters the most. Thankfully everything turned out fine today, but I seem to remember a game in Boston last year when Fuentes piped strike 5 to a batter which was called a ball and we ended up losing. I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry with an umpire before that game.
Halowood - April 14, 2010
"I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry with an umpire before that game."
September 16, 2009.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen SCIOSCIA so angry with an umpire either. He even called it out at the post-game press conference.
red floyd - April 14, 2010
LOL there it is....
I remember watching it live, going red in the face, reviewing it on gameday, getting more angry, and then watching replays over and over again that night, then reading about it on Yahoo the next day. LOL does anyone else remember that pitch. I mean it wasn’t even close to being a ball, they don’t get any prettier than that. It perfectly illustrates the New York-Boston conspiracy going on with the umps.
Halowood - April 14, 2010
It's not a conspiracy. It's worse than that. Much worse.
A conspiracy implies a plan, and requires plotting and organizing to execute on the plan to do what something that one would or could not do ordinarily. This behavior, on the other hand is what the umps do normally, and independently. It is, therefore, usual and customary.
Beyond birthright, beyond entitlement, this is practically DNA.
Stirrups - April 14, 2010
We needed this game
Lots of positives today. Pineiro, Rodney, Woods coming through again (He is gonna be just fine!)
Go Angels! Another win tomorrow!
xavier c - April 14, 2010
Tiger played for us?
Or did you mean “Wood coming through…”
red floyd - April 14, 2010
LOL!!!
imagibe Tiger at third for us?

Add those to the ones
already there for A-Roid and Jeter
Raaddad - April 14, 2010
Back off on shields sure he has not pitched well but he hasnt really pitched for a year let me settle him a bit
same with brandon although i don’t really like him he just looks like utter crap at the plate
Angelsrthebest101 - April 14, 2010
Well hopefully this stops that option for vesting for Fuentes

WINNING is GOOD!
I like winning! ;)
K3YEROUT - April 14, 2010
Wait! You mean we're allowed to score more runs than the other team?

"Yes indeed" (in Phil Hartman's voice doing Ed McMann)
Love that reference

we are working on it
in a week or two…

Today I tried to bet more than I have
Cuz I didn’t know how many I had.
It told me that “you only have panther points” — note that it was missing the number of points.
This should also be fixed.
red floyd - April 15, 2010
I regret not taking Pineiro off the waiver
for my fantasy league. Damn damn.

You would have jinxed him into a DL visit.

REsults up
However,s ince I put it up after midnight, if you made your bets for the next game, your total winnings have your bet subtracted

Ervin Ortiz
Needs to stop blaming the umpires and come to terms with throwing 90-92, and not having the same slider he had in 2008.
