But we’ll never know until he gets PT. I really would like to see him at 3rd this year, but like the Rev, I’ve a sneaking suspicion that Soth will stick with his boy Mice Tits.
If he wasn’t cockblocking Wood (potentially), he’d be heralded as the next best thing since…Chone 1.0.
Maybe I’m misreading some comments in other threads as hate, but the guy has been nails in many clutch situations and does everything the team asks from him.
What you wrote above about Maicer is accurate. We just want to se Wood given a legitimate chance.
I am in the Rev camp. I hope Wood gets a chance, but Scioscia doesn’t appear to have confidence in Wood. He was called up a several times over the last 2 seasons and just sat on the bench. Even last September, he didn’t get playing time until the division was locked-up.
I want to see what Wood does with 500 AB’s. I am skeptical he will really get the chance, unless there’s infield injuries. If Wood is struggling after 200 AB’s, I bet he will be demoted. I think that’s a part of the explanation for re-signing Quinlan.
I'm not hating on Izturis at all, in fact i'm not sure if Wood will ever be the player we hope.
But we’ll never know unless he gets the AB’s and PT. And for some reason Scioscia seems very hesitant to allow him to develop, by relegating him to the bench, and only playing him sporadically. Maybe the Soth knows something we don’t, or he is showing his disdain for the youngster, in favor of the vet Mice Tits. I don’t know. Izturis has been very clutch at times, and much like Figgy, been very versatile. My problem is with Maicer’s durability, and the fact that we have to play Brandon now. Or trade him.
People would have definitely said the same thing about Chone before last season – hell, they were!
Izzy’s only fault is his injury potential. But I still see upside.
2009: .300 average, .359 on-base, 74 runs, 65 RBIs, 35 walks, 13 stolen bases in 114 games (not all were full games either).
Great flexibility. He won’t have the speed but if he can stay healthy and plays leadoff:
- He could have 20+ SBs a year.
- At lead off, he can work on more patience and improve the walks walks to 50+
- His BA is fine as it is
- And with RBIs and runs, they are pretty good if you extrapolate them over 162 games (or similar to other full time players)
I want Wood to succeed too but all the upside talk only matters once he can demonstrate SOME track record. Mice Tits has already done that.
So yeah, I guess the only way this will get out of everyone’s system is to get the necessary AB’s and either cut bait or get off the pot or whatever those sayings are ;P
…to me the greatest part of Izzy is his clutchness. No one stands out more to me.
Hud gave him his nick for a reason. I suck at stat mining, but can someone apply some criteria to what ‘clutch’ hits are (unless there is already a standard for that) and tell me where Maicer ranked last year on the Angels?
Would it be just getting a hit with runners in scoring position? Or additionally with 2 outs?
Absolutely Rock!!!

wood upside > izturis upside
its about as good as its gonna get for micetits… wood can potentially power this team to a division title (… maybe im stretching…lets hope not).

So its gonna come down to scoscia deciding between
A dude who hits .300 and like .350 with RISP but limited power
And a dude who is probably gonna hit .250 with 20-25 hr
That’s a hard call.
