It’s a bunch of industry insiders stroking themselves, and trying to make the rest of us believe it’s important.
Yeah, some could say the same thing about sports, but there’s a difference — The entire news for the past weekend has been “Oscar, OSCAR, OSCAR”!!!!!! Nothing else has been happening in the world.
With the possible exception of Super Bowl Sunday, sports doesn’t do that.
As a Cinema-goer, you’re a winner if you feel your 15 dollars was well spent. Not what some arbitrary body votes on. I’ll gauge the best films of any year by their IMDB ratings.
Hell, I love technology, gaming, rock climbing, motorcycles, etc. but certainly don’t watch shows that give awards to people in those industries.
So other than entertainment factor for me, I see no reason to watch why some political reason is used to give the award to one person or another. Maybe if fans got to vote on the movies, but that is why we have IMDB and I used it daily ;)
I heard of a bunch of changes they made this year to get more people to watch. It seems with so many other outlets now for information, the Academy Awards have lost their luster.
“…to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers.”
This is pretty much the same as the ASG in baseball.
The difference is fans vote to recognize those individual in baseball, non-fans vote for it in Hollywood. IMDB essentially is the way to view the fan perspective.
Yes, in baseball some players get recognized each year because of popularity rather than true acheivements so you can argue the Academy does a better job. After all, look how high Avatar is on IMDB. I had fun watching it but please, it isn’t THAT great.
But that is always why non-fans are who let players into the HOF or just imagine who would be in there.
…they put up with most anyone because it’s meant to be a true open forum.
If someone here starts piping off against the Angels or posters, they will be banned in short order. It really doesn’t happen there.
But man o man do I read the most intellectual stuff there every time I watch a movie. You ignore the crap but then look for the passionate folks who post their movie interpertations.
They saved my ass when it came to movies recently like Session 9, A Tale of Two Sisters (foreign horror, one of my favorites now), and even Shutter Island.
This is a nice system for fast posts/responses, especially with the AJAX functionality where new incoming posts show up without a refresh.
They have a more traditional message board system but it isn’t any worse than 90% of the sites out there, especially given their immense volume.
Just consider how many movies there are (with new ones weekly) and each movie has it’s own forum with new threads every week. It’s HUGE on the storage and DB level.
The Oscars suck. I’m going to do tonight what I do every night, try to take over the world. Sorry for the Animaniacs reference, I watched that earlier with my niece and nephews.
I pity dem fools. Life in the big city fair, but shitty like strippers with eczema…tough titty.
Justin pulled out Janet…didn’t he?! But it’s ok when Madonna tongued down Christina and Brittany?!!

The stars have very safe, predictable and bland answers that make no waves.
Watching them all be bland in their responses inspired this: “Like a locker room interview after the game,” said Missus Halofan.
To which I added “And there is not even a Torii Hunter in the bunch.”
the nazi fucker from basterds just took supporting actor and forget the statue, he got to cuddle on stage with penelope frickin cruz second only to my salma.
Hedley Lamarr:
“Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency in the west. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.”
I didn't want to make a fanpost of this but I had an Angels related nightmare last night
Matsui was at bat, there were 2 outs and a runner on third. He worked his way to a full count before pulling a ball to the right side deep at the hole between second and first, he starts running as fast as he can, legs out the single.
The runner from third scores, but as soon as Matsui steps on the bag, he pulls a Jake Taylor a’la “Major League” and his knees give out and he falls flat on his face. An ambulance comes to wheel him off the field, and then I woke up.

I don’t give a damn about the Oscars.

I've never watched an Academy Awards...

Hell, I love technology, gaming, rock climbing, motorcycles, etc. but certainly don’t watch shows that give awards to people in those industries.

by your logic
it would be a yankees / cubs world series every year … hey let’s have the fans vote.
Rev Halofan - March 7, 2010
Really? Last I checked fans vote on the ASG
I think you have your analogy backwards.
RedFog - March 7, 2010
In fact using the Academy's definition...
