Angels 10, Royals 2 - CBSSports.com
Joel Pineiro took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Kansas City Royals 10-2 on Monday. Pineiro worked 6 2-3 innings, his longest of five spring appearances, and allowed only two hits and a run with two walks and two strikeouts. "They hit some balls right at people," Pineiro said, downplaying the no-hit innings. "The last couple of games. I'm just trying to get ready for the regular season."
Angels 7, White Sox 7 - CBSSports.com
Angels outfielder Reggie Willits played for the first time in two weeks after being sidelined because of a hamstring injury. He went 1 for 3 before being replaced. "We're optimistic that the worst is behind him and he'll be ready to move forward and see when he's ready," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
The only "regular" in this game was Mike Napoli (Izturis played SS), but they still managed to get a come-from-behind tie against the projected White Sox opening day line-up. Also, checkout the boxscore below. The Angels used 5 relievers who went 6 innings, giving up 2 hits, one walk, and 8 strikeouts. Not too shabby.
Joel Pineiro impresses with execution in Angels’ win - latimes.com
There is no secret to Joel Pineiro's success. The Angels right-hander goes right after hitters with his sinking fastball and looks for ground-ball outs, the earlier in the count, the better. "The hitters know what my plan is, what we're trying to do," Pineiro said. "It's just a matter of executing."He threw 94 pitches, and 13 of his 20 outs came on ground balls.
I got into an online "discussion" last winter with the son of one of my ex-wives friends (got that?) after I posted on her Facebook page that I thought the Angels should sign Pineiro. I've never met the guy (the kid, not Pineiro...although I've never met Pineiro either. Ah nevermind), but he went off on how crappy that signing would be, spouting ERA, wins, and such. Okay, it's only spring training, but I need to go back and find that conversation because it's going to feel really good to say "I told you so!" at the end of the year.

The Baseball Analysts: F/X Visualizations Archives
First note that the scale here is very small, there is little variation in the number of wins projected across teams in this division. Because the range of win projections is small the differences in win totals across projection systems result in very different orderings. OLIVER and CHONE like Texas, but don't think much of anyone else in the division. The other systems are pretty high on Seattle, while only Vegas thinks much of LA (Rich can take solace in at least someone respecting the Angels). But again because just 5 or 10 wins separates every team in every system there is broad consensus that the division is anyone's to win.
According to these pretty colors, it's the Rangers who are the biggest threat to the Angels this season, and the Angels aren't much of a threat themselves. One thing notable, the only "projection system" to put the Angels on top is Las Vegas...the only entity who make their living off of projections.
Five questions: Los Angeles Angels - Sean Smith - The Hardball Times
5. The Angels have beaten preseason projections regularly. Why is that? They have done a few things right recently, and one is to score more runs than you'd expect given their number of hits, walks and extra base hits. The main reason is because they have hit so well with runners in scoring position. I don't expect that to continue to such a degree, because I don't understand why any player would become a better hitter just because of the situation. If you have the ability to hit .320 when it really counts, why hit only .280 when nobody is on base? You should be hitting your best all the time so the guy behind you can hit with runners in scoring position.
Our friend Sean Smith (RallyMonkey5) and the creator of the Chone player projections looks at the upcoming Angels season. His point about the Angels depth (read the article), is the same as ESPN's Mark Saxon's below.
Angels observations with a week to go - ESPN Los Angeles
To worry about: The reason behind it. When I left Arizona after my second stint with the team, I was struck by how much worse off they are in the high minor leagues than I realized. A lot of these spring training games are decided when the regulars are already at home sipping a cold beverage. The Angels Triple-A caliber talent is not impressive. Remember Sean O'Sullivan, Trevor Bell and Anthony Ortega when they made spot starts for the Angels last year? Not impressive. You don't need 25 guys to get through a major-league season. You usually need about 30 and the Angels look dangerously thin in the organization.
Should I be worried?
Los Angeles Angels bullpen returning to form - ESPN Los Angeles
"We have a nice bullpen going, I'm going to be honest with you," Hunter said. If Hunter is right -- and early indications suggest he could be -- the Angels will return to the formula that has been central to their success in the Mike Scioscia era: stifling, hard-throwing relief. A year ago, the Angels hardly looked like themselves for most of the season, their bullpen fumbling away game after game. The Angels' 4.49 bullpen earned-run average was worse than all but three teams in the American League (Cleveland, Baltimore and Kansas City) and the other three each lost at least 97 games. The Angels won 97, but largely in spite of their bullpen.
The return of "Old Time Hockey", I mean Angels baseball. The Angels bullpen could shorten games to 6 innings.
MLB Network announces first live game schedule for 2010 MLB Regular Season - MLB.com
MLB Network today announced its live game schedule for the first month of the 2010 MLB regular season. To celebrate the opening of the season, MLB Network will air 30 Games, 30 Clubs, 30 Days, a package of 30 games featuring all 30 Clubs in the month of April, continuing on the theme of MLB Network's Spring Training series 30 Clubs in 30 Days. The schedule begins with the 2009 World Champion New York Yankees against AL East rival Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, April 6 with MLB Network's Bob Costas and John Smoltz calling the game at 7:00 p.m. ET. This will mark the first time Smoltz, MLB Network's newest analyst, calls a game for MLB Network. Immediately after, MLB Network will carry the Minnesota Twins at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET, rounding out a doubleheader that includes all four 2009 American League Division Series teams.
My cable system carries the MLB Network on channel 666. I think it's only appropriate when they show Yankee/Red Sox games.
Famous Red Sox Fan To Publish New Baseball Novella - Walkoff Walk
Stephen King was once the Most Famous Author in America. (The current titleholder is Stephenie Meyer.) Now he's just one of many Celebrity Red Sox Fans. That doesn't mean he hasn't stopped writing. King will soon release a new novella, Blockade Billy, described by King's website thusly: He may have been the greatest player the game has ever seen, but today no one remembers his name. He was the first -- and only -- player to have his existence completely removed from the record books. Even his team is long forgotten, barely a footnote in the game's history. Every effort was made to erase any evidence that William Blakely played professional baseball, and with good reason. Blockade Billy had a secret darker than any pill or injection that might cause a scandal in sports today. His secret was much, much worse... and only Stephen King, the most gifted storyteller of our age, can reveal the truth to the world, once and for all.
This could be really cool.
What to watch Tuesday: Ambidextrous Yankee facing Chipper Jones? - Daily Pitch: USATODAY.com
The Yankees' Pat Venditte, who went 4-2 with 22 saves and a 1.87 ERA for two Class A teams last season, is ambidextrous, so he chooses which hand to throw with depending on which side of the plate the opposing hitter stands on. Naturally a right-hander, Venditte uses a six-finger glove.

Frank McCourt's wife seeks nearly $1M per month - FOX Sports on MSN
When asked if Jamie McCourt would accept her husband's $150,000 offer, Wasser said outside of court that the figure wouldn't even cover the mortgage for one of the homes. He added the mortgages had been paid through February, but his client is behind on her attorney fees by $800,000. Wasser estimated her legal bills could reach as high as $9 million. Meanwhile, Frank McCourt continues to live in luxury despite claims the economic downturn has hurt his businesses. Wasser said Frank McCourt attended the Super Bowl and recently spent as much as $80,000 on a Caribbean vacation.
I sorry if I've said this before, but this shit never gets old. Do either of these nitwits realize how ridiculous all of this makes them look? $80K vacations. $9M attorney fees. $1M per month spousal support. I don't feel sorry for either of them.

"Okay, it's only spring training, I need to go back and find that conversation...
…because it’s going to feel really good to say “I told you so!” at the end of the year."
Well, if Spring Training is predictive, then we’re going to be a world of pain when we go 50-112 this year. The club’s 8 of 26 performance this spring is its worst in the club’s history in the Cactus League.
Spring Training — against the Royals. Like counting chickens in a hurricane during bird flu season.

To the extent that the site's CMS fails to fail gracefully...
…given identical sequential submissions, I guess that’s “our” problem.
You can see the glitch in the submission times. The second post records the submission time as ten minutes before WiHaloFan’s post, and 25 minutes before the first post, which is impossible given that a single action yielded both results.
The site is really feature-rich and ahead of most sports community sites, but it still has some glitches — occasional misthreading and handling of mobile posting among them.

as I noted last week.
Also, I question that this the worst Cactus League in club history. Send us a link, otherwise, I think thats a load of horseshit.
Finally, if you’ve watch these games, you’ll know that most of the games, our starters have done fine. Its been the no-name Single A relievers that have blown it or our third team squad that wasn’t able to produce runs.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - March 30, 2010
We're agreeing, no?
That Spring Training isn’t really predictive of anything? But that means both good performances and bad performances are largely moot — we can’t cherrypick. (That said, you may be remembering our starter performances this spring a little optimistically — outside of Pineiro, our starting five have spring ERAs between 4.66 and 8.03.)
As far as “load of horseshit” — well, I’m going on what Spring Training mag tells me, though I only have print reference going back to ‘73, so the teams of the 60s may have done worse. I can’t find any reliable reference that goes back that far, and I’m not sure that more than 40 years of preseasons is really necessary to prove that spring training records and regular season records aren’t closely correlated.
We do have records back to 1984 online though. Our Cactus records in 1997 and 1994 may yet prove worse than this year in winning %. And we did manage to win 84 games in ‘94 — a winning season, if nothing else. OTOH, we didn’t do so well in 1990, 1997, and 2003 — our other poor preseasons in the past two decades.
In the final analysis, I think spring training records really only tell us anything about our depth and the health of our farm system. And I still contend that our MLB-ready depth is pretty shallow at the moment. Injuries — or the lack thereof — will determine how well the Angels do this season more than anything else.
Turks Teeth - March 30, 2010
Equating all ties this spring to losses seems like spotty logic.
Zu Long - March 30, 2010
Perhaps.
But there are no ties in the regular season. We can quibble about the win % — it was more hyperbole than anything — but I doubt 60-65 wins would feel any better, no?
Turks Teeth - March 30, 2010
Lots of scrubs
We had 66 guys in camp I think I remember. Subtract the 25 man opening day roster and that gives us 41 minor leaguers. That is why we have only won 9 games. I watched or listened to almost every game this Spring. We were winning many of our losses until a guy like R. Fish came in with his 162.0 ERA, or Anthony Ortega with his 9 BB in 10.2 INN.
It really comes down to Sosh’s philosophy. Especially early on, he uses ST to try out minor leaguers at the major league level, for exposure. It has only been maybe in the last few games we’ve seen our regulars getting more playing time.
We will be fine. I am downright excited. The pitching staff looks to be amazing, Pineiro is our 5th starter? Wow. And having Bulger, Jepsen, and Shields all healthy, ready to set up Rodney and Fuentes, gives us a solid pen.
Our hitting looks like it won’t be any worse than last year either. Aybar is showing signs of being able to get on base, and steal some bags. If Wood’s ST success translates to the regular season, he will be a contributor. Morales looks like he wants to be nicknamed No Flash (in the pan). There are lots of positives. I like the power we have.
Rally Manatee - March 30, 2010
Keep in mind that "lot of scrubs" defines the composition of many...
…of the other 29 teams in spring training. It’s not unique to the Angels. I listened to a lot of Padres and Rays games as well, and they were trotting out plenty of single and double A guys.
Just a few random responses:
Not sure that the starting pitching looks “amazing” yet. Pineiro has had two good outings against the Royals — otherwise the other four starters have ERAs we wouldn’t want to see in the regular season.
The bullpen OTOH looks very solid outside of Rodney, who I still think is going to be a regrettable signing.
Aybar is 2 of 5 in steals this season.
I like the power we have in the starting lineup as well, but if injuries happen, we really don’t have serious power replacements from AA or AAA. Conger and Trumbo are about it, and neither are ready to step in for a Morales or a Matsui at this point.
Turks Teeth - March 30, 2010
Time will tell.
Unlike many HHers, I err on the side of optimism. And more times than not in the last decade, my optimism in the Angels has not been misguided. I don’t understand skeptics. I don’t understand the philosophy of acting disappointed in the present in order to avoid disappointment in the future.

I voted other....
my other is a manager that doesn’t play favorties. I heard ( I could be very wrong) that Willits and Quinlan are going to make the team. IF this is the case I’ll be pissed. We have way more guys that give us way more than they do. Aldridge, Ryan, and even Evans are better than both Quinlan and Willits. I really hope I am wrong and Soth grows a pair and doesn’t pick them.
angelskid2210 - March 30, 2010
I wouldn't be surprised if Willits at least starts the season in Salt Lake, since he does still have a minor league option.
~MMP~ - March 30, 2010
Minor league depth
I agree with Saxon that we should be concerned about this. Our roster is set with a very good starting nine, a solid rotation that goes five deep, six decent relievers, and the best bench man in the game. But there is no Brandon Wood or Sean Rodriguez to call upon if one or more of our infielders go down. Our starting rotation options of SOS, Ortega, Palmer, and Bell all got figured out pretty quickly by opposing big leaguers last season and really don’t present much upside. Our best back up outfield options are a couple of minor league journeymen who we really have no idea if they’ll continue to hit once spring ends. And while Hank Conger will be in AAA this year, his defense has a ways to go before Mike lets him catch anyone at the big league level. One or two major injuries could really impact the division race this year.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying we’ll finish last because the Bee’s are going to suck. But say Torii and Kazmir go down for an extended stretch, their replacements will likely be bad enough to swing the standing by a few games, which would likely be pretty significant considering the strength of the division.
dmhead - March 30, 2010
Lets look at your concerns one at a time...
1) But there is no Brandon Wood or Sean Rodriguez to call upon if one or more of our infielders go down.
But Izturis is there to be called upon if one of our infielders goes down. If more than one gets hurt then yea, we could lose some production but I think we’ll be OK defensivly with Patchett.
2) Our starting rotation options of SOS, Ortega, Palmer, and Bell all got figured out pretty quickly by opposing big leaguers last season and really don’t present much upside.
One of these guys will be stuck in the roation if we lose a starter but keep in mind that we have 5 solid starters, most teams are lucky to have 4. If anyone other than the Angels lose a starter they have to plug in a minor leaguer AND they have to play their weak 5th starter. Besides, I have faith that any one of the four you mention can win 25-50% of their starts which is good enough. 75% of 20% of our games is a loss if we lose a starter? Not that big a deal…
3) Our best back up outfield options are a couple of minor league journeymen who we really have no idea if they’ll continue to hit once spring ends.
Yup, backup outfield options is a concern. This is what I voted for in the poll. But I have no problem with either Evans or Willits defensively. We lose some offense if we have to play either one for an extended period of time but we’re still better offenively than the Mariners and Oakland…
4) And while Hank Conger will be in AAA this year, his defense has a ways to go before Mike lets him catch anyone at the big league level.
We won’t need Hank Conger to play in Anaheim this year. We have two solid starting catchers already. Hank may get one or two starts if we lose either Mathis or Naps but it’ll just be ‘cuse Mike likes to play the callups to make sure they’re not wasteing the trip.
5) One or two major injuries could really impact the division race this year.
We have enough depth to be OK with one or two injuries. 4 or 5 and we could be in real trouble but I don’t think there’s a MLB team out there who wouldn’t…

Outfield...
I think our depth at outfield is questionable. However, you can do some crazy switching around in a pinch. Rivera goes down and you can put Kendry out there and Wood on first every now and then. Weird shit like that can always go down.
I agree in for the most part about our organizational depth, though. Its not the strongest. However, I would defend Bell and SOS in that they are SUPER young. And could develop into quality arms in a couple years. We have good bullpen depth going into the minors, though…so if a starter goes down, and we need SOS or Ortega to come up then we can rely more innings on our bullpen until our starter gets healthy.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - March 30, 2010
Agree on all counts
I don’t think SOS and Bell have big futures with this team, but I have to admit that their youth makes it possible for at least one of them to improve enough this year to actually have an impact.
I really can’t see Kendry playing the outfield for any extended period of time, but I suppose anythings possible given the right circumstances. I wouldn’t mind seeing Evans and Ryan make the team out of spring. They hit from opposite sides of the plate and are both solid defensively. Evans could be the designated pinch runner (rather than the useless Willits) while Ryan could be a lefty bat off the bench who could also back up 1st.
Of course Mike is likely to default to Willits and Q as his backups, with either Evans or Wilson making the squad simply to keep them in the organization.
dmhead - March 30, 2010
I chose other...
We have a strong rotation, strong bullpen, and 9 strong starters. I think our depth is fine in most positions unless we have a rash of injuries… and there is no team immune to that.
I think we just need to have some balls roll our way and win some games.
thetooth - March 30, 2010
Btw, Stephen King is definitely not "the most gifted storyteller of our age"
I appreciate the subject of the book, but c’mon…That’s like saying Pat Boone is the most gifted songwriter of our time, or something.
And his connection to Stephanie Meyer as the “Most Famous Authors in America” highlights the ludicrous nature of that title, if it indeed is even true.
And, of course, his connection to the Red Sux add fuel to the fire which is currently burning his already published books

But it is ridiculous to think of ONE person as THE most gifted in anything, ya know.

McCarthy
Isn’t he the writer who doesn’t use punctuation like commas periods hyphens and stuff I haven’t read any of his writing mainly for that reason I’d have a hard time reading it because I’d be more focused on reading it than what was actually written.
I have heard he’s pretty good though.

Yea, reminds me of my HH buddy AngelsColts-lol
Kind of have to get the hang of it, or used to it, or something—it’s worth it though.
A modernist sensibility borrowed from Faulkner, Virginia Woolf and Joyce. A lot of writers still employ the technique—"stream of consciousness—there’s no punctuation in our thoughts, dreams and daily life for that matter.
McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men is more aligned with conventional rules and I recommend that one. Still, for us hardcore fans, Blood Meridian is THE American classic. The Wild Bunch but even bloodier and more poetic.
McCarthy is like the RevHalofan of lit ;)

To the few you mentioned I would add John Updike,
but Vonnegut is probably my favorite. BTW, would you believe that Barbara Feldon turned 80 this year? Can’t imagine that myself.

She was in a recent film too--and still looked good
I got to meet and chat with Bernie Kapell (who played Seigfried) at a party this year—he was very cool and talked a lot about Barbara and how smart she was and is. He had many great things to say about her. I told him that now rewatching the show with my kids, the first thing that I realized—that I didn’t realize as a kid—is that she was really HOT! In her own way. Especially the first episodes. She was a cool role model too—as my wife maintained—for girls in her smartness, toughness, and ability to deal with the uber techno geek, Maxwell Smart.
As for books, 2 guys I really like now who are great storytellers but not that literary are Elmoe Leonard and Robert Crais. I like mystery with humor—a la Dashiell Hammett.

Angels needs
If the Angels could swing for an ace pitcher or a star power bat in the middle of the lineup at the trade deadline that would add assurance for me.

I also chose 'other'...
When I’m listening to ST games and hear Hunter making an error, or Abreu making an error, I start to get worried. I expect minor-leaguers to make errors, but not veterans. So often an error is the difference between a win and loss. If the Angels play solid defense as they have been known for in the past, then I am very optimistic about the team’s chances this season.

They need some proven younger guys to play in the outfield.
They also need an ace.

Other
It isn’t depth anywhere that is a problem for us. We should package it up and make a deal so we don’t hemorage more of our depth.
Our problem is front line players. Torii Hunter is good as the face and leader of the team. But the only potential star in his prime is Napoli. And he probably won’t make it in 100 games. I won’t be happy until we have an All Star at every position.

You don't consider Morales a star...
even though he was 5th in MVP voting last year?
Jietoh - March 31, 2010
Not Really
There are a significant number of 1B that hit 35 HRs and 100 RBIs. Just that we haven’t had one in a long time.

Kohn
Just want to chime in, I was at the split squad game and this kid Kohn is THE REAL DEAL
He struck out two including Konerko and had a third guy barely hit a ball, only to get scooped up.
He has a VERY deceptive pause in his delivery that no one could pick up on and it fooled everyone.
He’s had unreal stats at two levels he has played in and based on what I saw…I think he has great stuff for a setup role.
We asked Mike Butcher to pass along the fan-given nickname “The Prestige” because of his delivery and he laughed and said he would do so…but anywho
everyone keep an eye on this kid, he’s got some great things workin for him
