According to Bill Plunkett, the Angels spring training roster has already assigned jersey numbers and the assignments pay little heed to recent Angels legends.
Alexia Amarista will be wearing Chone Figgins' familiar Number 9 in Tempe.
Infielder Abel Nieves will sport Garret Anderson's #16
Terry Evans will be the first Angel sport #17 since Darin Erstad last wore it in the 2006 season. Evans is out of options and already on the 40-Man roster so there is a high likelihood of him making the team. Evans wore jersey #64 in his previous major league appearances, and the honor of that high number will be handed to Hank Conger when he reports to camp a week from Monday.
Gary Matthews Jr. will not even receive the one-season turnover, as power hitter Mark Trumbo has been assigned #24.
The Troy Glaus hold on #25 was broken in 2008 by the Mark Teixeira trade and now #25 is the property of hot outfield prospect Peter Bourjos.
Even the great Vladimir Guerrero's #27 will be sported in camp. Look for infield prospect Andrew Romine to wear this on his jersey sans dreadlocks.
While Tommy Mendoza is a longshot to make the team out of spring, his assigned jersey of #39 signals that the Robb Quinlan era in Anaheim is most definitely over.
Three available jersey numbers that are not being assigned...
#15, #31 and #34: Tim Salmon, Chuck Finley and Nick Adenhart.

Is Nick's #34 permanently retired Rev?
Raaddad - February 4, 2010
not officially
but the only way someone wears it would be someone who came over in a trade or a signing who insisted they had to wear it, as is a player’s right on an unclaimed, unretired number they have been wearing.

Such a player
I would consider such a giant douche, that no matter his playing ability I wouldn’t want him. It’s hard for me to imagine the balls it would take to make such a demand given the circumstances.
Retire Salmon and Finley, and make Mathis pick another number so Downing’s #5 is untouched.
RallyMonkey5 - February 4, 2010
obviously not going to happen in the next ten years or so
but eventually.
Rev Halofan - February 4, 2010
It would be a public relations nightmare
for any player to insist on wearing #34. I can’t think of a single reason to justify it. That player would start his angel career hearing a cacophony of boos.
ArchAngel_7 - February 4, 2010
After enough time goes by, it's cool.
Does anyone even remember what number Bostock wore?
10 27 02 - February 4, 2010
10
An Angel willw ear 34 again, but not for many years.
Rev Halofan - February 4, 2010
Out of curiosity, Rev...
Did you know that off the top of your head, or did you look it up?
10 27 02 - February 4, 2010
i knew it
but only because i looked it up earlier this year.
Rev Halofan - February 4, 2010
27 and 16 should both be retired
CanyonLakeHalo - February 4, 2010 via mobile
Eventually
CanyonLakeHalo - February 4, 2010 via mobile
i agree
along with 14 and 15
Vladd#27 - February 4, 2010
Definitely agree with 27.
Jay Cal - February 4, 2010
I think #'s should only be retired when the player has retired.
That being said, I picked Finley. Really, I think both should be retired immediately. However, I gave it to Finley simply because he’s older and doesnt wear a WS ring. Let’s be honest, this guy was probably the second or third best pitcher to ever wear an Angels uniform. And unlike that OTHER pitcher(Ryan, not Lackey), he isn’t a trader and even still lives in Southern California.
Timmy has a ring at least so he can go a few more years(months) watching it sparkle before having the joy of seeing his # retired.

Quinlan WAS the Angels
Basball is now dead to me.
ttsec - February 4, 2010
They need to retire Salmon at the All-Star game
just for the poetic justice.

Figgi4life - February 7, 2010
Missing option: Both #16 and #31
As well as 4 (Grich) and 5 (Downing)
red floyd - February 4, 2010
I'd support this.
red floyd has it right, retire Grich’s, Downing’s, GA’s 16, Finley AND the Kingfish’s numbers.
halofolife - February 4, 2010
Alfredo Griffin's wearing #4 at the moment.
Also, I don’t see your argument for retiring #12.
TheTypingFiend - February 4, 2010
Chuck would be PISSED if Steve had his FINLEY retired first!
Downing Rules - February 4, 2010
Damn. That was a typo. I mean 15 and 31.
But they should wait until GA retires to retire his number.
red floyd - February 9, 2010
You should have a "Both" option
Commander_Nate - February 4, 2010
Second
Match Day 5 - February 4, 2010
Both
Agreed, I didn’t think this was an either/or situation.
Barca - February 5, 2010
15 and 31 will likely never be used again
Since Salmon’s history with the Halos and since Finley as already been put in the Angels hall of fame.
ryanfea - February 4, 2010
I agree
Both of their jerseys should be retired to celabrate their glorious careers.
ArchAngel_7 - February 4, 2010
I am not a big fan of Romine using #27.
That’s lame. I realize it is only spring training but there were still plenty of numbers in the 90’s available.
Downing Rules - February 4, 2010
Why?
We’re the rosters smaller back then?
Match Day 5 - February 4, 2010
no comprende.
Downing Rules - February 4, 2010
"in the 90's"
The 1990’s. Ba dum dum.
I’m here all week. Try the veal.
Match Day 5 - February 5, 2010
sweet.
Downing Rules - February 5, 2010
15
King Fish is the man
princeton11loveshalos - February 4, 2010
Even though he's in A ball
I say let Mike Trout wear #15 until its retired, then he can switch to #51. The upstreamers should really stick together.
Slasher52 - February 4, 2010
i was pissed when 25 was used lol
Angels_48 - February 4, 2010
Seeing somebody in number 17
Besides Ersty will be kind of tough. He was my favorite player growing up.
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - February 4, 2010 via mobile
Yea its not right
I am also an Ersty fan and its sad to see another player wear 17. I always loved the hustle he had.
docescobar07 - February 4, 2010
I gotta think 34 might go bye bye...
K3YEROUT - February 4, 2010
For fucks sake Artie
Retire a jersey already. WTF…Salmon, Finley, Grich ain’t good enough for you? C’mon dude, you’re startin’ to make this feel way 2 corporate for my liking.
