Who led the Major Leagues in strikeouts in 2010? Was it Cy Young Award Winnner Felix Hernandez? Was it World Champion Tim Lincecum? Was it ESPN cuckold CC Sabathia?
Nope.
In 2010 Jered Weaver struck out 233 batters, tenth most in a single season in Angels franchise history. The mark led all of baseball. Nobody reported it. In a permafrost of East Coast Bias, let's let the sun shine in and celebrate something that, had Jon Lester or Phil Hughes accomplished, would have caused some hack media type like Buster Olney to stage a hunger strike at Cooperstown demanding immediate induction.
Jered Weaver had a great season on the mound and the permanence of this mark in the record books will be the highlight that lasts the longest and shines the brightest in a decidedly dim season. The last Angel to lead all of baseball in strikeouts was Nolan Ryan in 1977 (it was Ryan's fifth time leading the majors in Ks, he would do it once more in 1987 with Houston). Frank Tanana was the only other Angels pitcher to accomplish this feat.
Just because nobody in New Jersey mentions it doesn't mean the fans is Southern California can't. Here's to Jered Weaver making his mark and salvaging an ounce of dignity for us and for our team amidst a season of digressions, regression and (since the scum of the earth dismiss our winning as mere luck) being unlucky.

wheres_bourjos_at - December 31, 2010 via mobile
Honerable mention since were on topic... on a smaller scale..
One of my top monents of 2010 was when juancho threw out that Russle Martin at second base before the scoring run crossed home plate!!

Right up there with snuggie night and the HH game LOL

I may be heading back to my old hometown in NJ this March for a week or two
if I do so, I’ll make sure to talk about Weaver’s K mark with someone, just for you Rev.
Caseys Kiss of Death - December 31, 2010
The Dream Weave is a beast
We know this.
Slyintine - December 31, 2010
I remember back when the awards were announced,
the updates on all the BSPN radio shows kept saying that Felix Hernandez won the Cy Young and lead the American League in K’s.
That really pissed me off.
Chzburger Jones - December 31, 2010
called it
in the Haren thread. I swear. go look if you don’t believe me. what? you don’t care? liar!
2pintsofbooze - December 31, 2010
You did
So what are the winning lotto numbers and will we sign Beltre or not?
LAstands4LovingAnaheim - December 31, 2010 via mobile
That's like calling
Cam Newton for the Heisman. Big woop. :)
lightupthehalo29 - December 31, 2010
who is
Cam Newton?
2pintsofbooze - December 31, 2010
It will cost you $180000 to find out
red floyd - January 1, 2011
Weave's arm looks really damn freaky in that picture.
My favorite player though. the Angels NEED to lock him up. He’s the kind of guy you shell out for, Borass or not.
TheKingfish - December 31, 2010
I suspect that is PART of the reason they're playing TOUGH with Borasss,
and what some may call “cheap” with Beltre.
wumbug - December 31, 2010
Agreed
They need to play hardball with Borass now, give them an edge for when Kendry and Weave are looking for their new contracts. Hope it works out.
TheKingfish - December 31, 2010
3 things that kept Weaver from the Cy Young
1) Lack of run support
2) The two F-Bombs Fuentes and Fernando
3) He plays for the Angels

BTW Great pick for #1 Rev
LAstands4LovingAnaheim - December 31, 2010 via mobile
give felix his due
the writers got it right – a few more wins does not change Weaver’s position in the race compared to Felix’s season. Just the complete lack of any mentions about it whatsoever is sad after the shock wears off.
Rev Halofan - December 31, 2010
This just makes me more depressed
knowing that when the time comes (although past performance is not an indicator of future results… that’s where the smart money is), Artie, Tony and the boys will make a half-assed effort to sign, put a drop-deadline on the inadequate offer and we’ll watch a home grown superstar pitch for the yankeesredsoxrangersnationalscubs.
:P
Moondoggy - December 31, 2010
Good choice for #1
Weaver was awesome in 2010
mustard_man - December 31, 2010
Weaver's ability to become a strikeout pitcher was important
because in the past he would seemingly be unable to K somebody and get involved in long pitch counts because batters would constantly foul off his pitches. His ability to finish the deal this year elevated him to an ace.
tanana40 - December 31, 2010
Very true.
He has always been able to get swings and misses, but it definitely helped him that he was a bit more efficient this year.
Ok, now that I checked, he was less efficient this year in terms of P/PA. 4.08 to 3.85 in 2009.
But, 20+ more 0-2 counts in 2010 – over 120 throughout the year. That’s a big jump, showing that he might have been attacking more than in the past.
He also threw more strikes in those situations than the past – again attacking.
His looking strike % dropped a tick, but his swinging strike % rose from 16% to 19%. A big jump from his historical 15-16%.
Anyway, interesting to look at the numbers a bit.
BTW, BBRef rocks.
jimmuscomp - December 31, 2010
Go Jered!
If you can’t win it all, it’d be nice to see those bold names in the paper with your team getting some credit. Can’t wait to see what he delivers in the years to come.

In a season filled with disappointments
Weave showed us the light at the end of the tunnel.
He and Haren will make a great one-two punch in 2011.
Raaddad - December 31, 2010
Some hope for next year...
Haren was 7th between his 2 teams combined, and as late as the last month of the season was as high as 4th.
lets hope the 2 of them do it again next year!
Zookeeper - December 31, 2010
Here's hoping Weaver is the undisputed CY winner in 2011
Monkeyspanked - December 31, 2010
Id like to see a CY dispute
Between Weaver and Haren
Halos2011champs - December 31, 2010 via mobile
Ok that would be acceptable.
Monkeyspanked - December 31, 2010
To Make It So Cool...
He can only get better! Damn, I’m ready for the season! The bad taste of 2010 is gone!
tmat - December 31, 2010
uuuuuuu give it up for my boy
weaver son what it is my dude! beers up for the moment no doubt my boy weaver was handling business for us
halo4lifeinny - December 31, 2010
we could of gone Olympics this year
and just handed out three medals sadly. this must have been one your harder writing assignments coming up with 10 “highlights” – looking back at them, its pretty poor when firing a FO man and a piss poor All Star game were two of them.
the only thing i’d rank higher was destroying the Dodgers, but on second thought, that’s becoming routine.
