Jim (WiHalofan) and your Rev hosted our weekly gab session about Angels Baseball earlier today LIVE on LunchTime HaloTalk... tune in each week at 11 AM and listen to the only fan-controlled Angels Baseball Internet Radio show online.
Listen to the show's archive at the widget below...
On the show we counted down the ten WORST moments of the 2010 Angels season:
10. Paying Gary Matthews to do nothing ... 9. KLAA selling out to ESPN programming ... 8. the 2010 Amateur Draft ... 7. Paul McAnulty getting starts at 1B ... 6. Not throwing in the towel when trade value on some players was high ... 5. The false confidence that a hot June brought ... 4. The passing of Rory Markas ... 3. Brandon Wood's bad season ... 2. Scott Kazmir's bad season ... and number one...

1. Snuggie Night.

Rev- and Wi Halofan,
I for one will be listening for some moral support in light of our sub-Mathisline ability to sign a quality FA. If we can’t seal the deal with Beltre (and I haven’t given up all hope yet), things are looking up for 2011.
angelslogic - December 21, 2010
are "not" looking up.
angelslogic - December 21, 2010
Why is everybody mad at Arte and Tony for pulling back their offer to Adrian Beltre? Adrian Beltre rejected an incredible offer according to Joe. Be mad at Adrian and Scott Boras. I hope Arte kicks Scott Boras out of the Big A..
ramo - December 21, 2010
I will be listening for the first time :D
also according to Rojas, Angels are reluctant to give Beltre a 6th year guaranteed.
princeton11loveshalos - December 21, 2010
6th year? Jeez. I'd be reluctant to give 5 guaranteed.
clover_black - December 21, 2010
At this point, our only chance of winning is to put together the most ragtag group of guys we can find. Things will be tough at first, with the team having an awkward "feeling out" period.
But eventually the halos will start to come together and play great, with the season culminating with them beating an anonymously evil team with a trick play they practiced all year.
Mayheminthehood - December 21, 2010
i have a feeling that Fat Kid McAnulty will somehow be pivotal in this trick play.

I might as well kill myself now

Venting and crying
After news of Beltre reportedly denying the Angels final offer, it looks as though our options at 3rd base are exhausted. So my question is this (and I have certainly done my fair share of joking about this but I now think it deserves a closer look)…why not give Napoli a shot a 3B? Do we fear less production than Callaspo or Wood (stop laughing….seriously…stop)? Callaspo is average….no doubt about it, but I think we need to ask ourselves if we want power here or average. I think Napoli’s trade value is decent right now, but I think it will likely stay that way until the trade deadline. So, give him a shot and if he doesn’t perform, I think he will still be looked at as a solution behind the plate for teams desperate for catching and looking to make a second half run. Though it is a very small sampling and at almost a beer league level, he has played 3B before in the minors (for a mere 3 games…1 with Cedar Rapids and 2 with Rancho) and owns a 1.000 fielding percentage (I just laughed at myself for that one). This sampling is almost not worth mentioning, but its something. Sure this sounds crazy to sum but I think it makes more sense than leaving Mathis at catcher.
This would presumably leave us with a surplus up the middle leaving options for trades. The problem is all of our guys up the middle have little to no trade value besides maybe Kendrick. Unless some rabbits are pulled out of the proverbial hat than we are staring a rebuilding year right smack in the eye. The only thing we have going for us is the fact that we play in the AL West albeit with an improved Texas team. The Fruit Ninja was unable to nail down the guys he wanted (the verdict is still out on Beltre at the time of this writing) so instead of going for scraps in an attempt to buffalo the fan base into thinking we are making a "splash", why not try to open some doors on a guy that has some power. Platoon Callaspo and Kendrick if you want…..heck platoon Wood and Aybar if you want, but let’s try to do something to fill that void at 3B. I think Naps could be a decent defender at the hot corner given some reps on a regular basis (and starting yesterday).
Sure this is a frustrated cry for mediocrity but at least it’s something. Maybe the rain has gotten to me…or maybe it’s the fact that I need 2 crowns (spending money on dental work never has appealed to me…thinkin about letting ‘em rot out of my head and getting dentures)….or still maybe it’s the fact that my wife thought a drive-thru pole would be a good Christmas decoration along the side of my truck….but I need to break up the monotony of this off season. Call me crazy, but I much rather laugh at Napoli resembling an Italian truck driver at 3B than cry at a $90 million dollar dude with a testicle explosion all the while knowing we got owned by Scott Boras.
……and breathe.
autry's cowboys - December 21, 2010
Totally Agree
Play Nap at third base. He picked up 1st base extremely well. He could pick up third.
It keeps him on the team and in in the starting lineup. Which should keep him happy. It will permanently end the whole question about starting catchers.
homercles - December 21, 2010
We need to lock up mathis long term instead of signing Beltre anyway.

SenorChuckles - December 21, 2010
the only thing i hate about everyone opposing
long term deals is what if we gave Beltre that 6th year guaranteed but we won the WS within that time frame or the pennant once or twice, would it be worth it? or is everyone just hell bent on not paying players $18 mil a year when they’re nearing 40?
SCHalo - December 21, 2010
+1 Was writing a similar point on another thread.
angelslogic - December 21, 2010
I've said similar things before
There has to be some year/dollar amount that is considered insane (Crawford and Werth IMO), but you’ve got to spend pretty big to get good players. If those good players get you to the World Series even just once or twice, it’s worth it. Fans will fill a stadium for years on that much success.
Commander_Nate - December 21, 2010
totally agree on this
i think we do land beltre and a trade is in the works-that’s just me. this front office has to see the issues we have in LF.
SCHalo - December 21, 2010
Emptied our LH pitching?
Reckling can be our new Saundo. Players like Corbin are a dime a dozen. Skaggs might have been the one that hurt us, but you have to give up something to get something.
SenorChuckles - December 21, 2010
Could always talk about how the AL West
is stacking up for 2011?
blast21dave - December 21, 2010
Really well for the A's so far
ryanfea - December 21, 2010
Think all those Japanese media dollars
Will help the A’s or will their GM still run it on a shoestring budget?

if it makes anyone feel better
the Texas fan base on fb thinks we are making all the right moves and will be stronger then we were last year. i went on there expecting to see them bash our angels but it was the opposite. really weird considering the majority of our fan base is ticked off at the non moves by the front office. also, keep in mind that the season is nowhere near us yet, so arte and co. may surprise us yet….
