Free Agent Signings Will Impact Angels Roster

Over at SBNLA, I wrote up a look at the top 2011 free agents who might sign with the Angels and how signing each of them might impact the current roster. If you have not yet substituted your daily sports page with SBNLA's coverage of all our local teams, give it a try.

After you read that, enjoy this home video footage of dudes with mullets...

I can't get past the "ANA" reference

seriously, Rev, please have that changed…I beg of you.

I'm not sure where to comment so I put it on both the SBNLA area and HH section.

The last time we had a losing record, Moreno went nut of the FA market (Guerrero, Colon, Escobar, Guillen). Perhaps it isn’t out of this world to think huge changes are coming. Signing Crawford, Beltre and Soriano, then cutting out payroll by dealing Napoli, Rivera and Callaspo, then cutting Jeff Mathis.

Doing all this would push our payroll up toward about 150 million, but that number would be likely to come down after this next season when we’re out from under GMJ’s contract and Rodney, Pineiro and Kazmir are gone. That’s 32 million coming off the books. If Chatwood, Richards or Reckling could step into the rotation, we’d be golden and have a payroll back down toward 130 and have Beltre, Crawford and Soriano. Which would be amazing.

Not that outrageous

The angels are one of 3 teams to pay luxury tax ever I think.

I think the Angels need to sign Carl Crawford and Adrian Beltre if he signs for cheap since I read that he wants to play in the west coast so he could be close to his family. I also read that Carl has always dream of wearing an Angels uniform since he was a kid and his uncle played for the Halos minors league team.

I think Soriano is a more important piece than Crawford or Beltre.

Of course I wouldn’t mind landing them all (it isn’t my money after all), but we need a reliable closer and I think Soriano is it.

I disagree.

The Angels bullpen is solid as is, especially when compared to its offensive capabilities. The line-up desperately needs a bat or two.

If we don't want to commit to 6/110 to CC.

Could giving Werth 4/68 and Beltre 3/42 be a better option? It’d be shorter contracts, and with just as much green. It’d be 31 million a year, for both, for at least 3 years. Both may very well bat around .280 with 25 HRs, which might seem slightly above average for the money they’d be getting, but this is what has to be done when trying to sign free agents; you’ll sometimes need to overpay. It’s a damn shame that Arte would have to shell out some serious cash just to get Juan Rivera’s ‘06 and ’09 performances—bat wise. The contracts would be coming off the books before they turn any older than 35. I love me some Crawford, but I would take Werth and Beltre for the same amount of money they’ll use to try sign Carl.

Got a

Metallica T-shirt.
Got a tiny little moustache.
Got a jacked-up Camaro.
And I’m sittin’ in the parking lot of Anaheim Stadium.

A team can NEVER have enough quality starting pitching

The next hope for SP coming out of the farm is most likely 3 years away (Richards, Chatwood and Reckling).

The team has a protected 1st round pick, signing Typer A free agents will hurt less this year. When the team wins, it puts more coin in Arte’s pockets. With more coin in Arte’s pockets, the crap contracts off the books in 2011 (2012 season), and the “dead wood” players off the books, the finances are not detrimental to future years.

1) make a serious run at signing Lee
2) Sign Crawford
3) trade for a 3rd baseman and LH bullpen help

DO IT NOW, ARTE!!!!

Edwin Encarnacion?

but he’s injury prone.

3 years away? HAHA, no.

Richards may or may not start in AA, even if he begins the season at Inland Empire, he’ll more than likely end in Arkansas. The jump from A ball to AA is a big one, the jump from AA to AAA isn’t as rough on players. It’s that AAA to the bigs that turns studs into Brandon Wood.

If Richards, Chatwood and Reckling all start the year in AA, there’s a chance you see them at the end of next season. More than likely 2 years max. IF they continue to progress at their current pace, all three should be ready just in time for Kazmir’s and Pineiro’s contracts to end.

So you are saying they will be in the Angels starting rotation to stay by the start of the 2013 season?

I’m sensing the opportunity for a friendly wager…..

That all really depends on what the Angels do in the free agent market.

If Scott Kazmir miraculously turns it around and pitches like he did in 2007, and Pineiro duplicates his success in st. Louis and here last year, the Angels may resign those two and they’ll never get a chance.

No bets, but I’m thinking one of Richards, Reckling and Chatwood will be in the rotation for the start of the 2012 season, about a year.

I respect your opinion. Thanks
I think my mom dated all those guys.

I wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for a 12-pack of Lowenbrau and a white snake album.

Angels

Sign—Crawford—Beltre-Soriano—-Keep—Napoli-Izy- trade Kazmir-Rivera-Wood- and Calypso—For Zack Granick—-Payroll would be about 125 million—110 million in 2012
