8 Figures:
$18.5 Mil ... Torii Hunter
$12.7 Mil ... Dan Haren
$12.0 Mil ... Scott Kazmir
$11.4 Mil ... Gary Matthews Jr.
You read that right: $23.4 Million to GMJ and Kaz in 2011
7 Figures:
- $9.0 Mil ... Bobby Abreu
- $8.0 Mil ... Joel Pineiro
- $8.0 Mil ... Ervin Santana
- $5.5 Mil ... Fernando Rodney
- $5.2 Mil ... Juan Rivera
- $3.2 Mil ... Maicer Izturis
TBD:
- Jered Weaver (Arbitration raise due from $4.2 Mil in 2010)
- Mike Napoli (Arb raise due from $3.6 Mil/ 2010)
- Erick Aybar (Arb raise due from $2.0 Mil/ 2010)
- Howie Kendrick (Arb raise due from $1.7 Mil/ 2010)

$23.4m sounds about right for Cliff Lee's annual salary....

"$23.4 Million to GMJ and Kaz in 2011"
A graphic illustration of Tony Reagins’ incompetence
angelslogic - November 6, 2010
My bad - should have restricted that comment to Kaz since Stoneman signed Matthews
angelslogic - November 6, 2010
I don't agree here.
Kaz hasn’t worked out. That’s true.
However, I think the story was mixed at best, if not highly in favor of Kaz bouncing back to his high K days when we signed him.
matthiasstephan - November 6, 2010
Then what are you disagreeing with?
You say yourself that the odds were against Kazmir returning to form at time of trade, yet Reagins threw tens of millions and three prospects at the doomed experiment nonetheless.
Tampa pants him.

How many young, struggling yet once good, pitchers with a history of injuries go on to regain their past form?
Dumb trade from day 1. We traded prospects with decent value and took on significant salary.
snowhor - November 6, 2010 via mobile
GMJ wasn't Reagins
~MMP~ - November 6, 2010
I already caught my blunder.
angelslogic - November 6, 2010
But Kaz didnt suck until well after he got here
Remember the 2+ months at the end of ’09? His era was like 1.00 and he looked like he was going to be the man. This year he sucked for sure, but that was COMPLETELY unforseeable.
Balls and Strikes - November 6, 2010
Completely unforeseeable?
Did you pay any attention to Kazmir’s previous twelve months in Tampa, the amount of time he spent on the DL, his pitch inefficiency, or loss of velocity on his fastball?
No? Ok, then — you couldn’t have foreseen it.
Turks Teeth - November 6, 2010 via mobile
Well okay, not completely unforseeable, but after what he did in august and sept 09, unlikely
Balls and Strikes - November 6, 2010
I would pay 12 million to the Angels to not play Kaz

DAD OF VLAD - November 6, 2010
Juancho, Mice Tits, and Napoli have to be traded.
If the angels are eyeing multiple free agents, right?
SenorChuckles - November 6, 2010
Arte says he will raise payroll so not necessarily
I could see them cutting ties with mathis, wood, and either willits or rivera depending on if they sign an OF or not. I think if they sign crawford-goodbye willits; werth- goodbye rivera. I dont think they will keep duplicate skill sets around.
Balls and Strikes - November 6, 2010
Some think it'll be a payroll around 135 million.
The Angels have 93 million committed in 2011. Not keeping duplicate sets makes sense, but they’re crowded on the left side of the infield, and it seems like a few will be traded or released.
SenorChuckles - November 6, 2010
That whole bottom tier
With the exception of Kendry, of course, they should non-tender Willits, Mathis, Frandsen and Callaspo. That would likely save about $5-6 million right there and all of those players are easily replaceable from within, likely with players who would be more productive.
dmhead - November 7, 2010
If the Angels can keep Bobby's option from vesting....
…doesn’t it look like 50M+ is coming off payroll next year, what with GMJ, Kazmir, Abreu, Rodney, Pineiro and Rivera off the books?
Then 2011 could indeed be a bubble year — invest now knowing that the budget will look saner next season.
Turks Teeth - November 6, 2010
Abreu would have to get hurt for that to happen
mattwelch - November 7, 2010
YeSs!
Time to cut the Fat……

Gary Millions Jr.
At least they moved him and shed some payroll. Kudos to whoever pulled that one off. I think he might be the highest paid minor league player right now.
