Freedom Blogging's Angels gumshoe Sam Miller has scoured the Dominincan Press and uncovered a report that the Oakland Athletics (remember them?) have offered Adrian Beltre a 5 year, $64 million contract.
UPDATE: The A's have traded Rajai Davis to Toronto for two pitching prospects. Read the SAM MILLER REPORT on this.

Wow
I hope this is not true
Brody - November 17, 2010
Not surprising.
Since all of the new stadium ventures have fallen through, they’re going to have to keep the loyal A’s fans interested until they ultimately decide to relocate to Redding or Fresno.
halofolife - November 17, 2010
I lived in Redding for the better part of a decade, that city couldn't support a major league franchise.
Not sure where you pulled Redding from anyway. If anywhere, I’d say Santa Clara, San Jose and Sacramento are the most likely destinations if they decide to move.
Halowood - November 17, 2010
Halowood. I was joking bro.
Redding is a little hole in the wall. Of course choakland isn’t much better.
halofolife - November 17, 2010
Redding is anything but a hole in the wall.
:-(
Jerk.
norcaliangelsfan - November 17, 2010
Sorry norcali. It is a nice hole in the wall though.
If it makes you feel any better i’m from San Bernardino originally. A truly ugly, crowded and smoggy shithole. ;)
halofolife - November 17, 2010
Heh......
Redding is dumb though, they should have gotten a 4 year school here when they had the chance, and it would be better.
I mean for crying out loud MERCED got a UC school.
Redding sucks for its high unemployement and crusty old and out of touch conservatism.
norcaliangelsfan - November 17, 2010
Redding's nightlife sucks too....
The bars are jampacked full of 50-somethings that just came down from the mountain and smell like it. Then there’s the Rusty Nail, full of 20 and 30 somethings that I never liked in high school and they still give me dirty looks to this day.
However, there are some nice subdivisions, Mcmansions and golf courses. And the lakes are awesome and the wife and I always crash there on our way back from snowboard in Mt. Shasta. Really beautiful place.
Halowood - November 17, 2010
bahaha
San B perfectly described in 3 lines. Luckily, Im above the trash of San Bernardino up in Lake Arrowhead!

Know any bands from there? Or close by?
My band is playing there at Bombay’s Dec 20th and we need to find 2 bands to join us. Here’s us:

You should have been more obvious
Like using, say, Willits or Avenal.
rspencer - November 17, 2010
Two separate reports, one at 45M and one at 64M -- both from the Latin press.
All within hours of each other. I smell Boras from here.
I wouldn’t trust any report that smells of Bor-ass.
Turks Teeth - November 17, 2010
Yup, smeels like a decoy to me. Probably just outlining the range they are looking for.
I think he ends up getting 4 years and between 55-60 million.
Halowood - November 17, 2010
I could see us paying that
I can’t see us paying five years or more than $60 million. Or at least I don’t want to see it.
Brody - November 17, 2010
Not sure about anyone else here, but I get all my daily info from the Domincan Press.
Solid journalism ethics, except from one guy by the name of MIguel Whickero.

Is he related to Marco Whickero?

From Jon Heymans Twitter
Jon Heyman
it appears the comp being used by adrian beltre is torii hunter ($90 mil, 5 yrs). gulp.
Epic Dean - November 17, 2010
if thats the case
can’t wait for Callaspo to be the starting 3B next season
2pintsofbooze - November 17, 2010
I doubt any team would give him that contract. He didn't even get that after his 48 HR season.
~MMP~ - November 17, 2010
Yeah, but that was so long ago
Haven’t you heard about inflation? The year Beltre hit 48 HRs you could buy steroids for a nickel!
Gorbachav5 - November 17, 2010
Oh fuck that
That is stupid money. No way Arte greenlights something like that.
blochead - November 17, 2010
That's the comp I've been using too when assessing Beltre's market value.
But also to point out how much the Halos paid for Hunter. Not surprising that his agent would suggest it.
Of course, we can thank “Ninja” Tony Reagins for completely distorting the market for good-not-great players.
Turks Teeth - November 17, 2010
but torii has a great-not-good personality... so that more than makes up for it...
right?… right?
clover_black - November 17, 2010
Fuck. That. Noise.

I doubt there is one iota of truth to this.

I would offer 4/65 and then leave
We’ve got other crap to do, and possibly even other Boras clients to deal with.
Commander_Nate - November 17, 2010
I'd give him 4/60 Plus a vesting option for a 5th year at 15
with a 1M buyout. It would be nice to have a power hitter at 3rd that plays good D!
AngryFan - November 17, 2010
You all are crazy
$15 million a year for a guy who has never done anything outside of two contract years? Just a few years ago, Seattle was trying to figure out how to get ride of such an awful contract.
HungryHunter - November 17, 2010
YOU are Crazy
You obviously are not familiar with Beltre. First of all, he was worth exactly what Seattle paid him. Read the link below, but here’s the most important sentence: “The former Dodger racked up a combined 16.7 WAR with Seattle, a performance that our Dollars system valued at $67.3 million.” Beltre’s Seattle contract was worth $64 million.
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/appreciating-adrian-beltre/
Adrian Beltre is one of the top half-dozen or so active 3B.
In a recent thread, our esteemed Matt Welch observed: "Replace his two monster years with typical Beltre years, and he’d still be a top-40 3Bman
That’s as in "all-time." He’s 23rd all time in Wins Above Replacement for 3Bman as is (between Matt Williams and Carney Lansford), and even if the combined 16.2 of those two huge years was more like 6.2, he’d be in Don Money/Travis Fryman territory. Do you know how many 3Bman have had as many WAR through their age-31 season? Twelve."
http://tinyurl.com/25ahq6r
You’re way off base in your Beltre assessment.
jjackflash - November 17, 2010
Adrian Beltre's career road stats vs. Scott Rolen's

Rolen’s on top. Who knew two good years could make you comparable to a HoF-level talent?
mattwelch - November 17, 2010
At least we'll get one monster contract year right?
angelsownredsux - November 17, 2010
let's not forget this could be a boras ploy...
this is what he does better than any other agent out there. he can try to falsely inflate a players value by floating numbers out there. here’s probably how the scenario went down:
billy beane- scott, what will it take to get beltre in an oakland/redding uniform?
boras- 5 years $64 million
billy beane- ok, just asking. if you could circle back to us when other offers come in, i’d appreciate it.
boras- you got it.
boras immediately calls heyman
boras- i got a scoop for you heyman. all i’ll say is that the a’s and i are talking about a 5 year $64 million for beltre.
heyman- can i tweet you on that?
thejd - November 17, 2010
this sounds pretty damn close to me.
I just hope team weaver/boras doesn’t give us huge problems when we try to sign him long term =/

WTF is up with the As? i bet theyre going to be the Ms of 2011
KB_24 - November 17, 2010
Why not make moves early if you're the A's. If my budget is huge, I'm not gonna bother with NEw York's table scraps.
I’d go and get what I want and be done with it. They’re making good moves.
Halowood - November 17, 2010
The biggest move they've made to date was DeJesus
Iwakuma could turn out to be good. Encarnacion and Davis don’t really matter either way. Beltre would be huge for them, though.
Commander_Nate - November 17, 2010
You work with what you have.
Halowood - November 17, 2010
They know their close to winning a AL West Title with what they have.
deejayelleseven - November 17, 2010 via mobile
I bet they did offer it, when does boras try to get someone signed before december?
Although it seems crazy for the A’s to keep going after third basemen-
Balls and Strikes - November 17, 2010
$64 mil?! HAH!
The Oakland Sucks can have him!
TheAntiSox - November 17, 2010
Yeah better them then us,but we had better...
Get a LHRP,An impact bat or two ,and a late innings bullpen arm.

left fielder.
firebird81 - November 18, 2010
Hey wait...
No more Rajai Davis pissing me off on the basepath? I don’t mind that at all.
Teixeira Who? - November 17, 2010
Indeed.I second this notion.
A’s Pitching staff is scary good for a bunch of young guys. Anderson ,Cahill,Braden,Gonzalez
deejayelleseven - November 17, 2010 via mobile
Don't forget that the A's have Eric Chavez's $66 million deal coming off the books this season
They currently have $28 million committed for next season, and they likely won’t be hit too hard by arbitration raises. They may actually have the payroll space for a move like this. It’s puzzling that they’d add a third 3B, however. I guess they could easily dump Kouzmanoff and maybe flip Encarnacion or use him as backup, but I don’t think he plays any other infield positions.
Suboptimal - November 17, 2010
Don't they have to hold Encarnacion until mid-June?
They signed him as a waiver claim, but I thought the same rule applied as to free agent signings.
I think its a given they’re going to non-tender Kouzmanoff because he’s due for arbitration and won’t be worth the minimun amount he’d get.
George Kaplan - November 18, 2010
BS
DAD OF VLAD - November 17, 2010
Offer
4 years 62 million and a mike napoli signed bobble head. He would take that.
M.Napoli For President in 2012 - November 17, 2010
I hope they sign him to that contract.
Oh, how we’ll make fun of that money for years.
SenorChuckles - November 17, 2010
I'd like to remind the A's ownership that the deal to move to San Jose hasn't gone through yet!
If they are forced to stay in Oakland, it is going to be a sorry, money-losing franchise for years to come.
AndyHogan14 - November 17, 2010
maybe they are hoping for a bailout like the rangers got.
Balls and Strikes - November 17, 2010
And remind Beltre that Oakland Colosseum is as bad to hit in as Safeco
George Kaplan - November 18, 2010
They're not losing money
The recently leaked financial documents show that small-payroll teams are still very profitable due to revenue sharing. I have no doubt the A’s have made considerably more money than the Angels over the last five years.
Suboptimal - November 18, 2010
That's because Billy Beane is a genius
He is even more genius-y than Jack Z.
George Kaplan - November 18, 2010
Z is a wizard.
Salty - November 19, 2010
This guy?
red floyd - November 19, 2010
Yes, he proved it with Chrysler
Daimler bought Chrysler for $36B, then sells nine years later to Cerberus for $7.4B, all of which is to cover debts of Daimler to unions, facilities and GMAC. Ultimately, Daimler has to kick in another $650M just to cover all the debts, which means it “sold” Chrysler by paying a net of $650M.
It is worth noting that no other takers could be found for Chrysler because Daimler hadn’t done a thing about enhancing the brand value of the company.
Yes, that is a special kind of genius.
George Kaplan - November 19, 2010
F Beltre then if he is going to get a contract for 64 million or higher.
Let’s go get Crawford and Rafael Soriano.
Chzburger Jones - November 18, 2010
This is the best news possible...
…as it means I don’t have to worry about him being stuck on the Angels with a longer than necessary contract.
So far so good.
KEEP EM COMING!

The Collisseum eats batters alive...
How many times have we seen supposed power bats sign with the A’s just to watch their numbers PLUMMET! And like others have said, he didn’t fare so well in the pitcher’s paradise that is Safeco Field.
firebird81 - November 18, 2010
Did they ever reduce the foul territory there?
The vast amounts of foul ground alone reduce the batting averages of the Oakland players. Balls that would be foul and 6 rows back in any other stadium are still playable in Oakland.
George Kaplan - November 18, 2010
I dont think so
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - November 18, 2010
I'd pass on Beltre
And have Naps start taking heavy reps at 3B. Just think, at 3B Sosh can verbally abuse him as much as he wants!
