2) Jean Segura, 3/17/90 - 2B
.313/.365/.464 with 10 HR and 50 SB. +18 bat, +17 glove, 5.51 WAR
Segura came very close to replicating Alexia Amarista's dynamite 2009 campaign in the Midwest League, showing a tad less patience, gap power, and defense but flashing more homerun pop and speed on the bases. Unlike Amarista, he has a cannon arm, which will allow the Halos to employ his newfound defensive prowess on the left side of the infield. Segura heated up as the season wore on, hitting .334/.370/.516 with 8 HR's from June 1st to the end of the season while thriving in the leadoff spot. If he truly does have the actions and range to stick at short, the Angels could have a legitimate, 5-tool MLB regular on their hands capable of challenging the 2010-version of Aybar for a starting job. If he doesn't, Segura could still evolve into Kendrick's eventual replacement: speedier and flashier with the glove, but with perhaps a tad less pop and batting average. Either way, Segura shows a lot of promise. The one caveat here, however, is that Segura's touted plate discipline isn't showing up so much in walks as it is in batting average, reflecting the Angels' philosophy that good pitch recognition skills manifest best in squaring up fastballs. That could eventually limit Segura's on base percentage. Overall, he's turned into a very good prospect, and is consequently a favorite "sleeper" among the national pundits (he's no sleeper here - we've had our eye on him for over a year).

Hmmm, I wonder who #1 is....

Something definitely smells fishy

Tim Salmon?

I've liked these WAR writeups, they offer a fresh new angle to the world of prospect ranking.
Well done Ryan. I wonder what you can say about Trout that hasn’t already been said. That hype machine is in full swing, we even got the Rev giddy about this kid as he confessed his love over Halo Talk last week.
I think if Segura sticks at SS, he would be Aybar’s eventual replacement, but I do have concerns. For instance, Aybar hit .330 and stole 50+ bags in advanced A ball, and we’ve yet to see much of it at the big league level. Now there were plenty of indicators (poor plate discipline, got caught stealing an amazing 36 times!) but still he was gonna be great (still could be).
I like his build though, Segura could eventually turn into somewhat of a power hitter too.

You're ruining the suspense. :(

Agreed
He has a very Kemp-like build with a strong lower half (though he is obviously smaller than Kemp)

Running and Aybar
I don’t have links, but I recall any number of places where Aybar was criticized for his base running skills. There was no doubt that he had the speed to steal 50+, but he lacked the awareness and timing to get good jumps, etc…and that Aybar’s high SB totals in the minors were somewhat misleading once he faced better catchers

Also how would Seguar comp to SRod?
With the Howie and Aybar comps, I’m just curious how Segura might project against the one the team decided not to keep since many of the things that are mentioned about Segura, remind me a lot of what was said about SRod (maybe not the cannon arm, but certainly the hitting skills).

The thing with comps that irks me, is they could be accurate one year and not the next.....
Example, when Trout was drafted he was being compared to Aaron Rowand, and lately people have been throwing Mickey Mantle’s name around like Trout’s a guaranteed Hall of Famer. Same way people were throwing Willy Mays’ name around for Jason Heyward. It’s awful. These guys are prospects, some are going to get better and some are going to get worse.
But if I have to make a comp for Segura, it’s Alberto Callaspo. I know I know, I hate to burst everyone’s balloon like that but let’s face it, Callaspo was downright awesome in the low minors. He was a Top 100 prospect, he hit .327 in Cedar Rapids, stole 20 bags hit 38 doubles, he was the man. Still is too as far as I’m concerned, a very under rated player. I mean in any gin year he’s going to give you good defense with a .290/.330 40 DB 15 HR stat line. I love having guys like him and Kendrick on the Angels. It’s a damn shame Callaspo can’t play SS better otherwise I’d wanna deal Aybar.

He looks like a stout young fellow
Is it just the photo, or is he a burgeoning Juan Uribe?
Suboptimal - November 11, 2010
He's strong. I'm surprised he's only listed at a buck 60. I would have guess 180 or 190.

Angels
The Royals are asking for 2 prospects for Zack Granicke—How about—Peter Bourjos-Mike Trumbo and add Scott Kazmir in the deal?-Then Sign Carl Crawford and maybe still bring up Mike Trout? Beltre is asking way too much-I thought he would—The As have offferd him 5 years at 65 million! And he is 32? Sorry, way way too much! Just keep Calypso Add Crawford and Zack-With Morales back and keep Napoli as the Catcher and DH and 1B—The Angels might still need a closer or a big bull pen arm—If they can get there payroll up to 125 million they will still have room to get more even after these deals

Uh...
There are a lot of things wrong with this:
1) Trading prospects to fill something that isn’t a need. Our Starting Rotation is the least of their worries. The Angels should be focused on bringing big bats with high OBP, specifically at 3B and LF.
2) Even if we wanted Greinke, why would the Royals take that package? An all-defense, high strikeout CF; a first baseman with a disturbingly high strikeout rate and no defense who isn’t even a Top 100 prospect; an injury plagued, and overpriced lefty starter that has not shown any signs of going back to 2007 form. Conversely, would you trade Jered Weaver for Julio Borbon, Chris Davis, Scott Feldman and 6 million in cash? Because that’s pretty much the same package we’re offering.
3) Mike Trout is only 19 and the highest level he’s played is A+. So somehow we’re going to just have him skip 2 levels and go straight into the Majors? I’m sure that wouldn’t hurt his development. No, not at all.
Sigh.
