Guerrero sticks it to the Angels, Kazmir "turns the page".  Halolinks

Kazmir, Angels unable to slow Rangers' roll - angelsbaseball.com
Scott Kazmir, hoping to leave a positive impression on Scioscia in his final effort of a disappointing 2010 season, managed to duel Lee on fairly even terms.Lee departed after seven innings with a one-run lead, but Bourjos tied it with a solo shot to left with two outs in the eighth against O'Day. It was his fifth homer. Kazmir kept his team in the game as he continued to search for his former All-Star form, limiting Texas to two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, issuing only two free passes along the way. With losses in 11 of his final 13 decisions, Kazmir finishes the season 9-15 with a 5.94 ERA. He plans to spend the winter in Arizona working on his physical conditioning and his command in an effort to carve out a rotation spot next spring. "Kazmir battled," Scioscia said. "It's definitely a season he needs to turn the page on, and he will. I think it will be the most important offseason of his career, the most important challenge of his career. I think he'll get to work and get closer to the potential he can pitch at.

I was going to link to a Dallas newspaper for the game link, but I'm tired of reading about how the Rangers are going to setup their rotation, or how much Josh Hamilton is going to play before the playoffs start.  So instead, let's read about how crappy Scott Kazmir has been this season.  Yay!  I mentioned in yesterday's links that if the Angels had won half of Kazmir's losses, this weekend's series with Texas would mean something.  And again, I'm not blaming Kazmir for the Angels missing the playoffs, I'm just saying the season would have been much more different had he pitched the way he had in previous seasons.  Here's the 'lights:  Bourjos blasts a homer to left - Peter Bourjos hits his fifth homer of the season, a solo shot to left in the eighth inning.  If you watch this video, notice how Bourjos pulls his hands in and kind of yanks the ball to left.  Vlad's single puts Texas up, 3-2 - Vladimir Guerrero singles to left to score Nelson Cruz with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.  It looks like Vlad has it in for the Angels.  And finally, the video that sums up the Angels 2010 season:  Aybar swings, gets hit - Erick Aybar takes a swing and is hit by the pitch.  It'd be one thing if the pitch hit him in the foot or the arm, but no, it hit him in the nuts.  Kind of what this season was like for the fans.

Angels-Rangers Preview -  FOX Sports on MSN
The Rangers have won two games at home in which they were opposed by Weaver (13-12, 3.02 ERA), who will try to take over the strikeout lead from Seattle's Felix Hernandez. Weaver has 229 strikeouts, leaving him three behind the Mariners' ace, who has been shut down for the year. Weaver is 3-1 with a 3.73 ERA in five starts against Texas this season, but 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA in two starts at Rangers Ballpark. The Rangers will hand the ball to Tommy Hunter (13-4, 3.80), who originally was expected to work out of the bullpen during the playoffs, but now will pitch Game 4 against Tampa Bay or the New York Yankees, if necessary. The right-hander has split two starts against the Angels in July. He allowed eight runs and eight hits in three innings of a 9-7 loss July 30.

Weaver's last start of 2010, and his attempt at becoming the A.L. strikeout leader.

Reagins denies 'personality conflict' with Bane - The Orange County Register
"We have good players. It's more about the process," Reagins said, denying that Bane's firing was a direct referendum on his draft strategy. "In order to be successful, you have to have talented players in your system and we feel we do. But some of the players that we have that are very talented have not materialized with that talent within the system."

Wow, is that GM "non-speak" or what?  Does anyone have an idea what Reagins is saying there?  They have talented players in their system, but some of the talented players aren't as talented at being talented as they thought?  How do you think they're talented if the talent hasn't materialized?  Phantom talent?  Or maybe they're talented at being untalented, thus being very talented.  Screw it, I give up.

Bane kept talent flow coming for Angels -  The Orange County Register
Or maybe they mean differences in the ways to assemble baseball talent. Since Bane’s philosophy was to draft and sign really talented guys, it is left to the reader to determine the Angels’ philosophy.

K-Rod's contract grievance to start Oct. 18 -  CBSSports.com Baseball
Lawyers from Major League Baseball and the players' association met Thursday, and they scheduled Oct. 18-19 in New York for the start of the hearing before arbitrator Shyam Das, two people familiar with the talks told the Associated Press. New York's decision, and an earlier move to put Rodriguez on the restricted list for two days, cost him $3,142,076 of his $11.5 million salary this year. In addition, the team said it was exercising a contractual right to convert the rest of his $37 million, three-year deal to non-guaranteed, meaning the Mets could try to avoid paying most of what's left on it. That move also is subject to the grievance.

There are rumors the Angels are looking for a veteran presence in their bullpen.  K-Rod maybe become a free agent.  Imagine a bullpen with both Rodriguez AND Rodney in it.  100cc of maalox STAT!

Padres on cusp of elimination from playoff race after 1-0 loss to Cubs - USATODAY.com
Held to just three singles, the Padres lost 1-0 to the Chicago Cubs and were pushed to the brink of elimination from the playoff race. The loss reduced San Francisco's magic number for clinching the NL West to one and idle Atlanta's magic number for clinching the NL wild card to two.

Dammit, can't anything go right this season?!?

Health inspector called on the Reds for celebration cigars - USATODAY.com
Complaints of players smoking cigars indoors after they clinched the National League Central Division were filed Tuesday night. Players could be seen on TV smoking their celebratory cigars in the locker room handed out by Reds owner Bob Castellini. Five people called a statewide smoking ban complaint hotline, said Rocky Merz, health department spokesman.

Alright, what kind of person would call in to complain about this?  Disgruntled Cardinal fans?  People with nothing better to do?  Seriously, there are five people out there that I hope I never have the opportunity to meet because I'm sure they're really, really sad individuals.

The Twins Joined The "Humiliating Rookie Costume" Parade - Deadspin
Witness Jeff Manship and Drew Butera. Rookies. Two peas in a pod. A duo even. Ambiguously gay? Who knows. Is it funny for one of SNL's best sketches—miss you, Smigel—to have been turned into a costume so that baseball players could make gay jokes? No. Is it funny to see two guys dressed as the Ambiguously Gay Duo? Of course. Those were great sketches—Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell did the voices of Ace and Gary, respectively

Yeah, it's always funny to see grown men humiliated, but the reason I linked to this article was because I was totally floored to find out Colbert and Carell did the voices for the Ambiguously Gay Duo.  And all this time I thought it was Ian Kinsler and Michael Young.

Yo, WiHaloFan....KAMIR?

You forgot a “Z,” buddy in the title…

Yikes.

Thanks.

Wi was just turning the page on the letter Z
That's K-A-R-M-I-S.
Reagins and Vlad

That might be the best non-quote I’ve ever seen by Reagins. It’s up there with the classic “The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.”

On another note, what was Vlad’s little hand flip after that hit about? What did we do to him? Maybe I’m just reading too much into it, but I’m looking forward to seeing that team get demolished next week more and more every day.

I think you're referring to the claw. It's a Rangers player thing.

http://www.chickenfriedbaseball.com/2010/08/explaining-claw-and-antlers.html

Wow. Must be an indication of what they do with each other in the locker room.

Speaking of quotes

Enjoyed Scioscia’s Quote on Bourjos:
“He’s a work in progress on the offensive side. But what he did tonight is not outside of his potential.”

I get the first part of the quote. But doesn’t the fact that he actually played well last night and showed flashes of brilliance, show that it’s “not outside of his potential,” as opposed to the following hypothetical quote: “he showed absolutely nothing, so all we’re left with is talking about potential.”

He has to mix and match preconcieved lines

For example:
Part A
Hes a work in progress
He stayed within himself
He left it all on the field
He had it all working tonight
He Struggled a bit
He’s playing to his potential
He’s working on some things
He showed us what he’s made of

Part B
On the offensive side
by battling back through the tough spots
By turning the page
By keeping with the things he’s practiced

FSN and FSNWest is having a dispute with DISH NETWORK

Starting late last night FOX has pulled FSN and FSNWest programming from Dish Network over a dispute in which Dish Network describes as a huge increase in fees Dish refuses to pay FOX for the two channels that broadcast Angels and Dodger games. Dish claims they are working to resolve this issue with FOX but in the mean time DISH customers will not get to watch the last three games the Angels play against the Rangers.

I was wondering if this is across the board with other satellite TV companies and cable companies or just isolated to DISH Network? This sucks. What a way to end the season, and fuck FOX for being so greedy at an inopportune time for baseball fans.

No problems with DirecTV.
No problems with verizon
No problems with Charter Cable
No problem with Time Warner
The Aybar at-bat should be required viewing material...

…for all Angel minor league players to demonstrate how over-aggressive swinging can make you look like a fool.
For more kicks and giggles, it could be viewed with a collage of Angel base-running follies…Torii Hunter as feature performer.

Aybar: C is for Cup

As in don’t leave home with out it. Good thing that didn’t happen to Beltre, or they’d be picking up the pieces with a pair of tweezers.

Eyebar is a star on Yahoo.
Should become a commercial for the cup manufacturer...

“Imagine if Erick wasn’t using our cup and THIS HAPPENS:” (cue video)…

(cuts to Aybar still in the batter’s box singing in an alta-soprano voice …)

“Using our cup ensures that Erick and Alberto can play ‘Dominican Hot Dog’ for years to come!”

(cut to video of Aybar and Callaspo hanging out in the clubhouse with wide smiles)

Having taken a bouncer in the ... groin ... I never catch without my cup.

Every now and then I joke about writing a thank-you check to the American Plastics Council

Which Francisco Rodriguez?

Sorry, I was confused by the question. Which Francisco Rodriguez are you talking about?

The original one
Kazmirr, bad? Yes. Deserving of this singling out? No.

If you are going to cherry-pick Kaz as a player, I am going to cherry pick from those games he started.

I am not going to excuse his whole season, but there were 8 games wherein he had an opportunity to succeed, if only the Halos offense or bullpen showed up to play.

May 1, DET
Kaz goes 6 with only 1 earned run. Leaves with game tied.
Angels score only 2 runs all game.
Bullpen blows game. Kaz deserved better.

May 11, TBR
Kaz goes 5, surrenders 3 earned runs.
Halos score zero behind him.
Bullpen blows up for 4 more runs, Halos only score 2 all game.
Kaz never had a chance.

Aug 13, TOR
Kaz goes 6 with only 2 earned runs.
Halos score zero.
Kaz tagged with loss. Needed to hold the Jays to 0.

Aug 18, BOS
Kaz goes 5, surrenders 4 earned runs.
Kaz leaves games with a 5-4 lead. Bullpen blows game.
Kaz lost a chance to pick up a win.

Aug 23, TBR
Kaz goes 5.1, surrenders 4 earned runs.
Halos score only 2 behind him.
Kaz earns a loss. Needed to hold the Rays to 1 if he wanted any chance.

Aug 28, BAL
Kaz goes 5.2, surrenders 4 earned runs.
Halos score zero.
Kaz tagged with loss. Needed to hold the O’s to 0 if he wanted any chance.

Sep 3, OAK
Kaz goes 5.2 with only 2 earned runs.
Halos score zero.
Kaz tagged with loss. Needed to hold the A’s to 0 if he wanted any chance.

Sep 30, TEX.
Kaz goes 5.1 with only 2 earned runs.
Halos score only 2.
Kaz no decision, deserved better

We were 1-15 against Boston and Baltimore.

If we play .500 against those two teams we’re only 4 back at the start of the Texas series. It’s the whole team’s fault, not just Karmis.

Missed the game

but is anyone else excited that Bourjos hit another homer? He has essentially sustained his home run rate from AAA, about 1 in every 30 ab’s. He probably won’t keep that up once pitchers exploit him some more, but even if that rate gets cut in half, that’s essentially Howie Kendrick power. If he manages to get that OBP a bit over .300 we have ourselves a player.

A question for those of you who are more statistically inclined: What is the break even point with Bourjos in how much his defense compensates for his bat? Say he hits .215/.290/.390. That’s not Wood/Mathis bad, but is it enough with his glove?

Considering he saved 2 runs against the A's in a 2-run win ...

I’d say he has game-changing defense that offsets even a 0.200 average. But, I think he will get up into the 0.230 range next season and possibly top out at 0.250 in the coming years. Sorry, I don’t have any proof of that, it is what I hope/believe as a fan.

I was asking the same thing yesterday.

I think a lot of it is a factor of what the team needs. I mean if we had a 2 man OF of Bourjos and Trout playing Left-Center and Right-Center they could cover more ground than an OF of Abreu, Matsui and Torii.
I think Bourjos’ defense is so valuable to the team because of the people around him. Torii is great but Rivera/ Abreu/ Matsui in the other spots just costs too many runs to ever be beneficial. They would all have to hit .350 with 40 HR each to compensate for the strain they put on the pitching staff. Pete could hit .200 and still help the team more than those guys.

THIS:

I think a lot of it is a factor of what the team needs. I mean if we had a 2 man OF of Bourjos and Trout playing Left-Center and Right-Center they could cover more ground than an OF of Abreu, Matsui and Torii.

I’ve been touting this idea for a while. We would run with a 5-man infield all the time. Or have two catchers behind the plate to ensure no passed balls and to make sure Napoli AND Mathis can both play (joke).

His defense, in a small sample size, already outweighs his bad offense

According to Baseball Reference, he has 1.3 Wins Above Replacement (0.7 on Fangraphs, FWIW), which makes him (get this) the FIFTH most valuable Angels position player. And that’s total value, not even value per plate appearance or per inning. Meaning, if Bourjos had played an entire season at his current rate of production, he’d be the most valuable player on the Angels. You can take those numbers with a grain of salt, since defensive metrics still aren’t quite to a level where we can implicitly trust them, but he’s been good.

Quite frankly, his defense has been amazing. His baserunning is very good. His hitting…well, it’s a work in progress. But the runs he saves on defense more than make up for his well below average bat.

To better answer your question

Even his current line of .200/.240/.360 is enough to make him a decent player with his level of defense. However, if you discount his current defensive stats somewhat, either because they’re too small a sample size, or because you just don’t plain trust them, a .230/.280/.390 line would be enough.

No to K-Rod, I just cant abide what he did.

No fun rooting for a guy who in his athletic prime beats up an old man. F-ing lame. Same with Manny pushing the secretary down.

More importantly, let's not forget his back to back ALDS meltdowns

Besides 2002, the dude is FAIL when it matters.

More than enough pitching in our 'pen at the moment.

Discounting Fraudney, take into account that Kohn, Walden, & Palmer are all solid pitchers. I’m not saying that one of them should be the closer next season necessarily. However it is worth noting that perhaps the next Scott Shields in already in our ’pen as a middle relief guy or 7th inning guy. Not sure who will step up and deliver, but it will be interesting to see what DOES develop in 2011.

Maybe the most sublime thing you've said all season, WHF
It’d be one thing if the pitch hit him in the foot or the arm, but no, it hit him in the nuts. Kind of what this season was like for the fans.
