With Matt Holliday signing with the Cardinals earlier this week, the last of the big-money free agents are now off the market, but there are still some holes to fill on this year's Angels. Below is the projected Angel roster if the season were to open today:
C - Jeff Mathis / Mike Napoli
1B - Kendry Morales
2B - Howie Kendrick
SS - Erick Aybar
3B - Brandon Wood / Maicer Izturis
OF - Juan Rivera / Torii Hunter / Bobby Abreu / Hideki Matsui / Gary Matthews Jr. / Reggie Willits
P - Ervin Santana / Jered Weaver / Joe Saunders / Scott Kazmir / Matt Palmer / Fernando Rodney / Jason Bulger / Kevin Jepsen / Scot Shields / Brian Fuentes
This major league roster consists of 23 players, leaving two roster spots open. To fill those 2 spots, the Angels are unlikely to sign any other free agents as they already have some tough decisions to make regarding players who are out of options. Outfielder Terry Evans, catchers Bobby Wilson and Ryan Budde, and pitchers Rich Thompson and Dustin Moseley must remain on the Angels major league roster or else be exposed to waivers in order to be sent down. With the exception of Moseley, who probably won't be ready for spring training due to injury and could open the season on the disabled list, none of the remaining five players would likely clear waivers. (Note: yeah, okay...Moseley was non-tendered this off season and is no longer with the team)
If the Angels are able to unload Matthews' contract, Evans would most likely open the season as the Angels 5th outfielder as he can play all three outfield positions. However the toughest question to answer is what to do with Bobby Wilson. Wilson, who turns 27 just before opening day 2010 (a week younger than Jeff Mathis), has nothing left to prove in the minors and could ably replace Mathis if the Angels are able to swing a deal that includes the arbitration-eligible catcher.
If the Angels decide to carry eleven pitchers, Rich Thompson would probably start the season in Anaheim...maybe. Of the players who are out of options, Thompson would probably be the easiest to replace and to be let go. Yet Thompson has one thing going for him the others don't; age. Thompson will turn 25 during the 2010 season while the next youngest of the group is Wilson at 27. The remaining player's ages are Moseley (28), Evans (28), and Budde (31). All of these players are too old to be considered prospects and should be thought of as nothing more than injury replacement-type players making the organization's decision a bit easier if they decide to let them go.
What off season article would be complete without some sort of free agent talk? If the Angels decide that none of the above, out-of-option players are worth keeping, who's still available to fill the utility role? How about one these, completely off the radar guys (age in parenthesis):

umm moseley was non-tendered with brown. all s offseason so far i have been sure that the following (wilson, and evans)
would be on the 25 man roster because they were out of options. however i didn’t know that thompson was also. does someone have a link to where this is stated?? now assuming that to be correct i could see them going with thompson over wilson if they dont want to carry 3 catchers but i pretty much think that evens is a lock.
i also dont think we go after any of the agents you mentioned above

playing some first at the end of the season?). i just think he is more of a lock than thompson or wilson. are you completely confident that willits makes the roster? he did go back and forth a lot last year and if in spring training evans shows more he could jump ahead of willits i think.

not sure if your agreeing or not but no i am not sure. he has had trouble up here because of playing time i think, for the most part.
also with him going back and forth so much the last year i think that the coaches are not sure about him either. so considering that i think that it is possible that Evans in spring training could impress enough to take his spot.
now also this depends on what they do with wilson and the other catchers, because if they are not put on the roster then both Reggie, Evans and Thompson could be on it with no problem

It's time
to cut ties with Willits. I don’t care if he’s spunky and can lay down a bunt and the crowd chants his name. He’s barely a major leaguer, and that roster spot is better served by any of the other candidates mentioned above, with the exception of Budde. He gone.
Evans looks like a natural to me. Smooth and rangy in the outfield, quick bat, good makeup.
And we need another starter. We’re one injury away from being in trouble. I agree with the post above, a 5th spot carousel of the kids would be dangerous. Bring back Garland. 4.00ish ERA, 12-15 wins, 200 innings. 1 year, 8mil with performance based option year. Wrap it up. We’ll take it.

what i do remember is him saying that he would get a shot at third with wood in spring training which is the right thing i think. as far as lead off i think it will be aybar and izturis based on who is in the lineup.
i think wood wins 3rd base. and as you said in #4 izturis will take turns in those three spots but mostly 2nd and SS.

Scioscia has seemed a bit manic/depressive in attempting to forecast his preferences.
For some players/positions, he’s incredibly loyal (playing Steve Finley when he was less than worthless, Jeff Weaver, keeping Vlad batting 4th last season, and so on).
At other times (not sure if this is the manic or depressive) he appears to key on a few factors;
1) Lefty/righty match-up.
2) Best match-up against particular pitchers.
3) Who is more currently more consistent defensively.
4) Who seems to need a rest.
5) Who has the hot bat.
So, I don’t think Izzy or Abreu or Erick (or Pettit ?)are a lock for lead-off. It just may depend on several other factors, known only to the mind of Scioscia.

I have no idea what the FO will do...
…but I’d hope they will sign one more decent, reliable SP…a Garland type pitcher.
My best guess is the FO will wait like they did last year (when they signed Abreu) to see how he market shakes out. I don’t want to go through a full season with Bell, SOS, and/or Palmer as the only backups in the event of injury or injuries.

See also Edgardo Alphonso, who was making $7 million when we released him. Arte is not above cutting ties with people who aren’t producing.

whom could we bring up that would be appreciably better than GMJ? Not being argumentative here; this is a sincere question. What I’m thinking is that since he will be paid either way, it makes more sense to at least get something out of all that money—unless not having him would make us appreciably better. This was the case with Alfonso, and Appier was let go for insubordination.
Certainly GMJ is not producing nearly enough to justify his salary, but he did do a good job filling in for Torii when he was on the DL. It seems to me that as a bench player, independent of salary considerations, he’s not bad.

I'm a huge Chris Pettit fanboy, for reasons I can't really justify. Call it gut instinct, but I've liked him from
year one with us. I feel like he can offer us just about everything GMJ can at this point, with the added bonus that Chris Pettit may actually be a legit major league player waiting to happen as opposed to a one-time fluke who is paid to much and unhappy with his playing time.

The advanced fielding stats tell us that he is an absolutely horrendous fielder. He’s not just holding back younger talent, he actually HURTS the Angels defense when he plays.

Pettit doesn't really have enough time for his numbers to show.
GMJ was worth negative 14.5 runs last year according to fangraphs. In other words, Gary Matthews Jr is slightly worse to have in the field than Jeff Mathis is to have at the plate (Mathis was worth -13.4 runs at the plate last year).

Fangraphs is useful as a reference, but as with so many things
some rely on it too much and confuse its spreadsheets of pretty numbers for reality. GMJ was indeed quite clutch at the plate with men in scoring position, and that fact should hold merit.
What matters, after all, is not what GMJ is LIKELY to have done were the season played a million times, but what ACTUALLY occurred. What actually occurred is that GMJ contributed to several clutch rallies and assisted the Angels in winning.
What will happen THIS year though, we can only guess at, and the odds of him being that clutch a second season in a row aren’t good.
Anywho, always take fangraphs and other saberstats with a grain of salt and a dose of common sense.

Sometimes that’s how it goes. I’d rather not throw good money after bad by wasting the opportunity to develop young talent. We’re likely going to pay him the money either way, so at least play someone who could turn into to something in a year or so.

yea i went and looked at the stat we are talking about and this is what i saw. if you go by position first off he is
in no way consistent. In 08 the only time he was positive was when playing CF (about +8) and in 09 playing RF was (about +9). but besides these two positions in those two years he was basically hurting us. so yea id agree after seeing this that although he has more experience so is more polished it may not be a huge jump in production to go to a prospect. now it wouldn’t be pettit though cause Evans def. comes up for OF before Pettit)

Evans mostly brings only power. Further, Evans is 4 years older than Pettit IIRC. If we want a young guy to develop into an eventual everyday player, my bet is on Pettit over Evans.

and also that is so not a good analoge because there is no bases for it (just cause they beat us twice in two very close games with us missing key players doesn’t make our chances slim now).

I think the thoughts behind your words are coherent and sensible, but, respectfully, it often takes considerable work to figure out what you’re saying, and I don’t always have the time and energy to do that.
If you want to make sure you get your thoughts across, you should at least try to use capitals at the start of sentences, periods at the end, and commas once in a while in the middle. This would also show respect for your fellow HHers, by not putting the burden on them to punctuate your posts for you.

when reading it as one big huge one on sentence, it doesnt make any sense to me. Even when I do take the time to input the periods in my head, I’m not really seeing anything immediately interesting.
Not that I always or even half the time, add something worthwhile. However, I see this is as a on-going conversation your buds at the bar. I see ANGELSFAITH as the schizo who rolls in and takes over the conversation. Then everyone loses their train of thought and gets, naturally, annoyed.

We go with 11 pitchers, with a late F.A. pickup (Ben Sheets?) holding down the 5th rotation spot. Palmer makes the Opening Day team because some other pitcher gets hurt. Budde & Evans either get traded for a sack of cheeseburgers or cut. If the latter, they’ll immediately get picked up by AL West teams.
Bench is Mathis-Izturis-Wilson-Willits-Matthews, since no one in their right mind will take GMJ’s salary off our hands, and he is yet more valuable than Evans or Willits. When any infielder goes on the DL, Sandoval gets the call.

except why carry three catchers unless Naps gets to DH? Unless one or two of our outfielders goes down, Naps will only get into the game wearing his catching gear. Which still doesn’t resolve what to do with Wilson, who may be to valuable to simply cut, but isn’t good enough to take AB’s from Napoli. I wouldn’t be opposed to simply non-tendering Mathis, as it seems dumb to pay anything over the minimum for replacement-level production, but I think we all know that’s not going to happen.

I think he’s as good an option as either Budde or Wilson in that situation. And being out of options doesn’t mean we can’t send them down. I don’t think too many other teams are going to claim either of those guys waivers, given that they are the definition of third-string, and most teams don’t bother with a third catcher.

A few Angels trying on the 1B glove during the spring. Howie Kendrick has done it before, and could be moved over in a pinch. Brandon Wood, Bobby Wilson, and Juan Rivera each have a perfect fielding percentage at first (ok, they’ve played like 10 innings between the 3 of them).
Mike Napoli needs to start getting some work in at first. Might be a good career move for him. If there are a plethora of DH candidates and they carry 3 catchers, why not make Naps the C/1B/DH guy?

Makes sense to me.
That way he’s somewhat close to the watchful eye of the big league club, and his support network (Kendry and pals?). Kendry started in Rancho, and he’s been a success story. Starting in AA – Arkansas seems to fit his initial pro ball talent level, but its location doesn’t seem ideal, at least at first. So, get his feet wet near the big club, have him get good innings in Rancho, and promote accordingly.

it's lean, not tough
the only thing ‘tough’ about the final roster spots this year is the fact that we are so thin compared to the previous decade, none of the options to fill those last roster spots are really appealing.
With that in mind:
- we keep GMJ.
- Wilson has made enough progress, Scios loves catchers, he is young enough, and and getting him some more MLB ABs will help us down the line in a potential trade of any of the three C’s.
- and we’ll take Thompson, but hopefully some youngun’ with more potential will just earn himself a roster spot in ST
I think we’re done with FAs, but there always could be an unexpected trade by the Ninja, especially dumping GMJ, though I wouldn’t be too surprised nor upset if we signed some one like Washburn or Garland for that 5th starter.
