Erick Aybar Walk Off Single Beats M's in Extras

Final Score in Anaheim: Los Angeles Angels 3, Seattle Mariners 2

After closer Brian Fuentes choked up a beautiful pitching performance by Scott Kazmir, the Angels bats finally awoke in the bottom of the 10th. Matt Palmer was the pitcher of record and got his 10th win of the season. The Angels were almost 0 for 10 with Runners in scoring position when Erick Aybar singled home Bobby Abreu, who had led off the 10th inning with his 10th extra inning hit in the past 10 somethings. It was Aybar's 52nd RBI of the season, 2 more than Mike Napoli has all year.

Kaz was denied his first Angels victory after pitching brilliantly, allowing only 1 run, a solo homer to the 2nd batter of the game. After 7 innings of 3-hit ball, Kevin Jepsen had a quick 8th inning, but the Fuentesaurus looked absolutely lost, yielding a monster blast to Center Field to Mike Sweeney and then walking two of the next three batters. Scioscia came and got him and Jason Bulger put out the fire, and as sweet as it was for Palmer, Kaz showed off something special to Angels fans.

Star-divide

Bibby Abreu scored the wining run and was at the plate to drive in the other 2, one on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and the other on an error by Seattle Shortstop Jack Wilson.

But don't get the impression that there was a lot of Wood in this game. It was yet another night of dominated Angels bats, understandable of late with 3 of the past 6 games has been 2 servings of Queen Felix and 1 of Zach Greinke, but at some point, Maicer Izturis and Vlad Guerrero really should take a pitch with men on base. Chone Figgins made a routing error and could really, really use a day off, although he walked twice on a hitless night. The Rangers swept a doubleheader in Cleveland and trail the Angels by 4.5 games.

Erick "come thru in the clutch"-bar
gotta go with Kaz

he’s been dreamy.

me too - if for no other reason than he pitched an awesome game and he didn't get the win.
I vote Kazmir

Bulger should be an option. He, Aybar, and Palmer all bailed us out, but Fuentes really hosed Kaz out of what should have been a great win in his Angel Stadium debut.

good to see a lot of Kaz votes...

bulger was clutch, so was aybar and bobby. at least jepsen, bulger, palmer, and oliver are reasons to like the bullpen …. dondo & fuentes… turn it up a notch

Kazmir seems to be the real deal

Lakey, Weaver and Kazmir in the playoffs could go a long way.

All the way baby.

Felix Win*

hehehe

one of your best ones so far…props!

Fedor vs. Arlovski

one of the greatest fights ever

arlovski really has no chin

got dummied in his next fight too

fedors overhand right would put out a bear

and brett rogers hits like a truck.

Seems to rely too much on his mediocre boxing and lack of head movement that puts him the nap-time position.

Lesnar would mop the floor with him.
no more affliction fights
Palmer has been stealing more than Figgy lately

…swiped another win from a starter. Got to give POTG to Kaz — kept us in it and really deserved a W even if the stats don’t allow it.

Bulger

he lets the inherited runs score and that’s a devastating loss

Gotta Kaz...he was awesome and deserved a better fate...

thank you very much Fuckuentes

Wouldn't you rather blow than have a closer who points at the sky?
I'd rather win.
winning is for losers
Losing is for the a's
the a's suck
Amendment: sucking is for the a's

losing is for the royals

and the pirates

and sadly…my raiders :(

and the clippers
playoffs this year

rockets and suns suck

oh and ucla football sucks
whoa now...

its only been this decade where you can say that…

in all fairness, the clippers have sucked forever.

not true about the clippers either

la clippers yes except for a couple years…buffalo no…if you are a lakers fan…lakers just recently became good after the gasol gift…before that the weren’t that good since shaq left. bruins…still lil sister of usc.

Wow did you just become a sports fan in 2005?

the clippers have never made it past the second round of the playoffs no matter what city they played in and under any name. The Lakers just recently became good? Really? They, along with the Celtics, have dominated the history of basketball. I’m not a huge Lakers fan, but even I know something is wrong with your statement. One last thing about the Clippers, .362 total winning percentage. Suckitude.

As for the Bruins, they did very well for themselves throughout the 80s and 90s. The have an all-time winning percentage of .569 and 7 Rose Bowl victories. While that’s not USC status. UCLA dominates USC in every other sport, and because of that, you can’t call them USC’s “little sister.” You can discount that fact, but you’d put yourself in the company of Jeff Miller- not a good place to be.

i said lakers just recently became good (again) since shaq left

in between that time not…weren’t even supposed to make the playoffs in 07-08

and i said bruins football sucks…not bruins basketball…so sorry ucla football is usc’s lil sister.

also are you a 2002 angels fan?
Am I?

I’m only 22, so I can’t say I’ve been an Angels fan nearly as long as other HH members (perhaps yourself included). But I can tell you what it was like sitting in the hot Anaheim sun on a Sunday afternoon watching Chuck Finley and Mark Langston pitch for the California Angels. I remember trading “Mother’s Cookies” trading cards with the other kids to make a complete team set. I’ve been going to Angels games since before I can really remember, and watching the Angels win the 2002 series from the Left Field Family Pavilion was one of the greatest moments of my life.

In short, I am a 2002 Angels fan, but I’m also a 1994-2009 Angels fan as well.

i'm 27 and glad to see our not

just a band wagoner…so do you go to ucla or just a fan…

also to our comment below

if ou watch basketball…how man t

cont....pushed post on accident....

how many times have the clippers had the #1 pick? plus the nba is ranked differen’t than
college football.

I know that rankings are dofferent

The only reason I said clippers suck is because it’s hard to be a clips fan. They’re not a dominant franchise, a streaky franchise, a decnt franchise or even a tolerable franchise for the average fan. Being a clippers fan requires the same “we can do it next year” attitude you see from the royals and pirates faithful. Heck, I’m a Rams fan and have been cut of that cloth for a while.

The one thing these teams have in common? Suckitude.

Rams fan?

Pfft. You guys dominated the late 90s/early 00s. You’ve only sucked a couple years now…don’t complain too much.

Maybe if you HAD used Brian Leonard more, jackasses!

RUTGERS!

Haha. But I became a rams fan in the 90s

Back when Jim everett was qb and georgia “still don’t know how her husband died” frontiere moved the team to st. Louis. I wasn’t alive for the fearsome foursome or the epic super bowl against the steel curtain. So my life as a rams fan has been generally sad with 2 excellent years and some really terrible ones.

In terms of the franchise sucking argument, I think it’s safe to say your franchise sucks if a winning season typically spells success. Angels are not a sucky franchise. The rams are borderline, but I would say they are.

I get so much shit

because I happen to be a Giants, Angels, Rutgers, and Celtics fan.

It’s a stupid boring story, but each team has a ‘reason.’ But as of right now, it just makes me look like a colossal front-running asshole, even though I date back to the C’s days of Dee Brown and the Giants days of Danny Kanell or Kent Graham.

thanks for beating the lakers...

too bad the celtics are done though
No they're not

we just got ‘Sheed. None of those guys are at the top of their game anymore, but none of them are half a step from the door, either. They have enough good years left in them, and they’ll be able to build a team going forward.

The only reason the Lakers are relevant right now is because a trade that should have been goddamn intervened in was allowed to go through. I mean, that Grizzlies trade was absolutely fucking absurd. I’m still pissed about it. Fuck Memphis and L.A.

can't disagree...lakers weren't even

supposed to make the playoffs…kobe was pissed and
he knew they sucked.

I'm sorry

but rooting for Kobe is just ridiculous. At best, he’s a womanizing unfaithful cheater. At worst, a rapist.

And all that aside, he’s a whiner who gets pissed when anything doesn’t go his way. His “give me a winner or trade me now” bullshit attitude for like, 2 seasons in a row is the same primadonna crap that destroys other athletes. What kind of selfish prick demands that he be given a chance to win a ring IMMEDIATELY or otherwise be traded, after he works for a franchise that has already given him three of the damn things.

Screw’em.

kobe is old

no more kobe…no more lakers fans…

besides real lakers fans i mean

not kobe lakers fans.

every team has “those” fans

cough dodgers

I work everyday

with Kobe-laker-fans

the ones who can’t do any rooting for the Lakers at all without somehow injecting the words KOBE BABY (all-caps-necessary for emphasis) several times into their arguments.

MVP MVP!!!

hahaha…ask them what happened
in 05-06 when bumped in playoffs and when
the clippers had a better record and
they say…huh? when? real basketball
fans know 1 allstar player can change
a team…not like baseball or football.

I could not agree more

That trade was bullshit.

Right.

And Kevin McHale handing Garnett over to the Celtics for a big buckets of bolts was a steal for the ’Wolves…

Really?

Al Jefferson is nice. Theo Ratcliff’s expiring contract is a very nice piece. Add to that a 2009 first round draft pick. doesn’t sound like a big bucket of bolts to me.

but in our defense the celtics weren't

good until the trade…good you stayed a fan…i hated
being in oc and all of a sudden seeing celtics hats…really?
where were these since bird?

People that see that I'm a C's fan now

that didn’t know me before think I did it to be a contrarian asshole who lives in L.A. and wants to piss off Lakers fans.

Nevermind that some people actually exist who DO legitimately like teams not in their current geographic region.

Much like Laker and USC fans in OC

Where did they all come from pre shaq and Carroll?

We grew up here.

In the comfy rural confines of walnut, avocado and orange groves, listening to Chick Hearn try and keep up with the dazzling Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, whilst waiting for another John McKay-led victory come Saturday afternoon.

yeah, that was lame.

let’s get this fuckin post back to Halos baseball, gents.

which is why i asked you if you were a 2002 angels fan

before recent times the angels haven’t been as dominant as they are now…angels
fans hoped they made the playoffs not expected to. being an angels
fan was hard before.

if you do not know the nba…than i can’t discuss anything w/you than about
it…young teams are slowly dominating the nba…look at the blazers/okc and now
clippers this year. the big man era is gone now.

I can see now why you'd assume I'd jumped on late

But I think the soth era has moved the angels from suck to successful. That day the angels hit .500 will be glorious.

of course it has which is why i hate when people say

fire sciocia!

What retards are saying that?
angels talk on the radio and the drive

some people always bring it up after a loss

Rule of thumb

if you think your opinion matters enough to be heard as a call-in on talk radio, you’re an idiot.

I am approaching my last two terms at ucla

And I have no idea what “how man t” means. But if it’s anything to do with the NBA, I watch playoffs occasionally and don’t follow the rest too closely. Fall/winter is for football and the beginning of spring training. And come spring, basketball is second to the angels.

I didn't go to UCLA

but I can get behind any dude who hates USC.

Fuck that school.

Dude

The halos play Boston and new York this month and you waste your f bomb on USC? I don’t even do that…

F-bomb?

Do a search on my username and the word “fuck.”

Too lazy

Hit me with the results. I assume it’s a lot. In which case: bad moderators!

au contraire mon ami

good moderating.

just don't ever think

that there is NO hammer.

I'll be the first to say

that I don’t think I am, nor do I think I SHOULD be, the exception to your rule.

I get carried away a lot, I know. And I sure as “f-” know it’s not helping make me appear articulate. ’tis why I generally try to use it as a self-parodying reference to my exuberance, rather than strictly as a colorful modifier.

Dude, It's A Lot!

No Joke, but always well placed and most well-deserved.

Mother's Cookies

They were tasty suckers. I miss them.

I did refute the football sucking...

UCLA football is a winning team historically. Heck, even under Karl Dorrell they went 35-27. “Suck” should be reserved for constant cellar-dwellers, first-pick-of-the-draft types. Not for teams that are in the middle of the pack.

bruinhalo

i like what Skippy is doing, should be a great game in November. good luck at Tennessee.

not last saturday

but then again I said that about the first saturday of last season

Mean people suck, nice people swallow

me, I’d rather win!

WALK-OFFBAR

but i voted for kaz.. this kid is LEGIT..

Fuentes

for his selflessness in providing more unheralded players to get wins with such great frequency.

A true team player, if you will
Kash Money in the bank

Repeat POTG, keep on groovin on’

96 mph on kaz's fastball.

kept it up all game long too. which is great.

aybar tho.

Rollercoaster win

Panther (WPA style)
Kash Money (.355)

Blame of the Game
Fuentes (-.412)
Miguel Piñata (-.357)

That’s right. The Piñata’s WPA did not suck as bad as that of Fuentes.

To my point about sac bunts and how much I hate them

note that, while not a significant drop, Willits’ sac bunt actually dropped our win chance by 1.4%.

Could such a result be an artifact of the developer behind the algorithm

having a bias in favor of protecting outs as a precious resource?

Well

considering I read an article in the NY Times probably about 6 years ago about how sac bunts, generally speaking, reduce run scoring chances, I doubt it.

They did a study across hundreds (thousands?) of samples, wherein the probability of a runner scoring from second with one out was less than the probability of a runner scoring from first with no outs. Which, honestly, just has always made sense to me, anyway. A runner at second with one out must rely on the team essentially “hitting .500” in the next two batters.

I don’t think they are universally useless…I think they are just, generally speaking, overused.

Also meant to say

the idea that a single-base advancement of a runner must come at the expense of one of only three outs granted in an inning just doesn’t sit well with me.

That said, I’m certainly glad it worked out tonight, even if we have no idea how things turn out had it not been done.

Terry Evans

Or Juan Rivera hits into a DP?

Or rip one off the wall

or over it.

This was also a principal brought forth in Moneyball.

I don’t recall the source of the data in Moneyball, but it was an approach that was being advocated by the Billy Beane sliderule set in the book. IIRC, this is a particular strategy point wherein there remains some disagreement.

So you would agree that if you were programming the algorithm you would also carve it up so that Willits’ bunt would result in a reduced chance of victory. Therefore, your positon would yield the chart result, whereas Sosh’s position (as but one example) would not.

This is why I have zero faith in the chart itself. It IS an artifact of the bias of the programmer. I would hesitate to point to the chart itself as proof of anything. I would prefer to go back to the underlying event issue, and the discussions therein.

How does Griffey throw a wild pitch?

;)

Rosie is 10-1

what more do you need to know? :)

sadly, half the A-holes here will never be convinced what was obvious all along if ever they opened their eyes.
Yes, we are all a bunch of ANGELIC holes.
Palmer = run support

nuff said

Reggie Willits' bunt in the tenth was suitable for framing.
great managing right there

Might just bump Q off the playoff roster too

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Not.

The result was truly a thing of beauty, but the mechanics were fraught with opportunity for failure. Willits crouches so far down in his bunt stance that anything sent in thigh-high will top off his bat for a pop-up. Equating to an out. His break was getting a pitch down at his knees, which he executed on perfectly.

WHAT A GAME!!!!! Pitchers duels are usually so boring, but this one….Kazmir kicked Seattle’s ASS! He may not get the credit, but this game belongs to him. Lights out. The Angel s have a new ACE. We gotta keep Lackey, folks. Could you imagine this rotation next year?

I imagine it would be the same as it is now.
A new ACE?

Lackey/Weaver says screech da breaks yo!

Hey Rev wheres your series preview video?

it was good shit.

I want to keep the attention

on the auction for Jon’s Recovery Fund.

Ohh I see,

wish i could help but im broke due to the money invested in fees and books :(

At least Fuentues gave up a solo-hr

And not a lead changing.. thats as positive as i can get on him

Yep ... Victor Martinez's 3-run blast was brutal.
Aybar has been solid with the bat for a while now

As for Fuentes… He’s a Putz – when he’s on, he’s good. When he’s off… man, the wheels fall off. Only reason Seattle didn’t go ahead while Fuentes was pitching is, well, they’re Seattle. They tend to not hit very well.

Coming into tonight

Fuentes vs. LHB: 0 HR in 64 PA
Fuentes vs. RHB: 5 HR in 130 PA

Sweeney vs. RHP: 0 HR in 104 PA
Sweeney vs. LHP: 5 HR in 124 PA

I think if you’re Scioscia, you have to bring Jepsen back to get Sweeney out. He’s the Mariners’ designated anti-lefty. But Fuentes shit in his hat after that. He’s a serious head case, I hope Scioscia will get more creative with closing games out in the playoffs.

Agree.

More about platoon splits (stats include last night’s game)

Fuentes (2009)
vs. RHB .270/.368/.470
vs. LHB .220/.281/.254

Jepsen (2009)
vs. RHB .218/.271/.256
vs. LHB .363/.408/.440

Bulger (2009)
vs. RHB .214/.288/.340
vs. LHB .205/.324/.455

Something to ponder:
Fenway. Playoffs. Bottom of the 9th. Angels with a one run lead. Runners on 1st and 2nd. Two outs. Fuentes on the mound facing Kevin Youkilis. Both Jepsen and Bulger are warmed up and ready to go.

Good God...

Watching the replay … in Boras’ suite, there are the most bored looking human beings I’ve ever seen. What the heck are they doing at a ball game? One of the guys has been dozing off every time I see him on screen.

DRINKING!!!! that's what!
Panther = Aybar

Sorry about the run support Kaz
