Angels pitcher Jered Weaver pitched great but the Halo bats took the night off.
Bobby Abreu struck out 3 times, going 0 for 4 and left 2 runners on base.

Jeff Mathis was in the game for his defense so sure enough, he made a throwing error that brought in the 3rd run of the evening.
After a day off, Angels telecaster Mark Gubicza noted that missing a game might have thrown off the Angels' timing. For the past three weeks he had been lamenting the Angels dull play as a result of their not having any days-off. Nice of Gubi to change it up behind the mic. Too bad for FSN-West that most Angels fans have an i.q. beyond that of the average 9-year-old.
Too bad for Mike Scioscia too, as his attempt to hide something wrong with Mike Napoli by starting Jeff Mathis is as minimal as the framed Barnett Newman lithograph (Vir Heroicus Sublimis) hanging in the apartment the two catchers share. Something is far from heroic and sublime behind the Anaheim plate. Most Angel fans blood pressure is up to record levels as the 3-0 score tonight rings like a coming ALDS result, but in games, not runs...

Let the scrubs on the bench pull out their shirt tails. Let the clubhouse boys chill the champagne and tarp off the lockers. Let the BoSox announcing crew start talking about their team as among the greatest of all time, let ESPN line up pitching matchups against the Cards. Let John Henry book his hotel suite in St. Louis. Let their fans toss their stonewashed caps high into the sky, toss back another bottle of Sam Adams, and let their mullets fly free in the cool Autumn winds of New England.
And then let Aybar come to the plate and leadoff with a triple. Then let’s go through the lineup. Base hit after base hit, working through reliever after reliever. Let’s end up with Papsmear doing his best imitation of John-Lithgow-and-a-1000-yard-stare as the Angels pull out a miracle win with a three error defensive lapse that allows in the winning run.

Mathis is worthless
Mathis has committed more throwing errors in his short career at catcher (21 in 2031 innings) than Jose Molina has in his entire career (17 in 3861 innings). Jeff has also caught just 23% of baserunners trying to steal to Jose’s 40%. That’s dead-even with “defensive clod” Mike Napoli (also 23%).
You have to wonder what the Angels were thinking when they gave Molina away for free in favor of Mathis. It must be because they thought Mathis could hit. Well, Mathis is a career .199 hitter with a .598 OPS. Even Molina has a career average of .236 and an OPS of .610.
Mathis sucks. Please do not tender him a contract, he’s not worth a couple million dollars, he’s not worth anything.

Rev- Angels bats took the NIGHT off?
They’ve taken the last MONTH off, rounding into our usual form for the playoffs. Just in time. When Abreu, Morales, Vlad, Rivera and Hunter go 0 for the night, you’re going to lose. With the exception of Morales, those other four have been killing us lately with O’fers. And while we’re at, look at what Napoli has done in the last month. He’s batting .118 -ish in the last month. No wonder the team can’t win…because we can’t hit.
Soth is talking about a lineup shakeup today, and I hope he’s serious.

but it is kind of hard to give a guy blame of the game for his defense when we got shut out. :((
My choice for BOTG is the offense as a whole. Oh, and I thought a more fitting pregame pick for today would have been, “how many Angels batter strikeouts? over/under 10?” Good grief! WTF is up with the bats?
On a lighter side…we seem to be in an offensive slump at the moment…since these things seem to go in cycles and so long as we can limp into the playoffs, the offense can ONLY get better!!! Cuz the smell from Angel stadium is pretty f’ugly right now.
