THURSDAY HALOLINKS: Yankees Too Hot For Scott Kazmir

Angels, out of gas, fall to Yankees -- latimes.com
A team that has been running on fumes for a few days simply ran out of gas Wednesday, the rigors of a schedule that had them playing their 40th game in 41 days and the oppressive heat of a 95-degree afternoon conspiring to sap the Angels. "I don't know if there has ever been an off-day more needed by our team than the one we'll get" today, Manager Mike Scioscia said. "It's been a grind."

Burnett, Yankees win duel with Kazmir, Angels -  FOX Sports on MSN
Ian Kennedy's 20 friends and family members could scarcely stand to watch while the New York reliever's first appearance in over a year went from an inspiration to a budding nightmare."Just to be pitching is an accomplishment," said Kennedy, a Long Beach, Calif., native and former USC star. "And then to be pitching here, and in a big situation, there are no words to describe it. It got a little crazy, but I was glad it worked out barely. These are big, important wins for us."

Angels embrace long-awaited break in schedule  - OCRegister.com
By Wednesday afternoon, when they struck out 15 times in a 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees, they looked like they were on the verge of a mental collapse. Thursday's open date was looking like a two-week Hawaiian vacation to some of the guys. "Guys are going to kick back, man, try to get some rest," Torii Hunter said. "We'll do a bunch of nothing, probably won't watch SportsCenter. … OK, maybe SportsCenter, but no baseball."

Team Reports - CBSSports.com
RHP Kevin Jepsen, after pitching four times in six games through Sunday, admitted "the ball has felt a little heavier," and he has been given a few days off. After an early season demotion to Triple-A, Jepsen has made 31 appearances since July 1 with a 1.67 ERA, pitching his way into a prominent role as the Angels' primary setup man.

Team Reports II - CBSSports.com
And on the 21st day, they rested. The Angels are off Thursday after having played games on each of the last 20 days. It was their second stretch of 20 consecutive games in the last 41 days, part of a finish to the regular season that will have them play 50 games in the final 52 days.

Angels’ Pitchers Are Rounding Into Form as the Playoffs Approach - NYTimes.com
A first-round series with their old nemesis Boston is likely, but the Angels now appear to have Lackey and Jered Weaver for the first two games in Anaheim, and Kazmir and Saunders available for Game 3 and a possible Game 4 in Boston. Saunders would seem to be the choice over Santana based on current performance — he is 5-0 with a 2.11 E.R.A. since returning from the disabled list — and his Fenway Park history (3-0, 2.84 E.R.A. in four starts). Santana is 0-2 with a 6.37 E.R.A. in four starts in Boston.

Angels have no chance? You’re nuts - BostonHerald.com
Mock the Angels and their total cluelessness about beating the Red Sox in October all you want - that is fun, actually - but if you came away from this series thinking the Division Series against the Angels will be a cakewalk, you are probably wrong and, to misquote Torii Hunter, nuts.

How far has Napoli fallen? - Angels Unplugged - Los Angeles Times
With two men on in the bottom of the eighth and Napoli due up, the manager called him back and had Maicer Izturis pinch hit for him. That one move told you all you need to know about Napoli's immediate future. As it was, Jeff Mathis, who is barely hitting above .200, has done the bulk of the catching this season, simply because Scioscia values defense much more than offense at the position.

Morales proving value day after day - angelsbaseball.com
After winning the American League Player of the Month honors after setting the Angels' club record with 33 RBIs in August, first baseman Kendry Morales suddenly fell into a rut in early September. The switch-hitter went into a 3-for-28 skid and all of the talk about being a legitimate American League Most Valuable Player candidate began to lose a bit of its steam.

UC Riverside Pitchers are Grounded - FanGraphs Baseball
Perhaps it’s a coincidence that many UC Riverside pitchers have shown the ability to induce an above-average number of ground balls. Then again, maybe it’s not by chance and the school’s coaching staff is on to something. Either way, UC Riverside alums should be followed over the next few seasons – especially if ground-ball rates continue to gain in popularity.

Oliver's work highly valued by Angels - angelsbaseball.com
"He's arguably been our best pitcher over the course of the year, start to finish," closer Brian Fuentes said. "He's done everything, from start a game to pitch in the fourth inning to the eighth inning. There's not a thing he hasn't done and done well."

OK, I'm no expert but...

why is Napoli’s swing so uneven? If you watch the path of his bat, it flips up near the power portion of the stroke. I don’t know if he’s doing this consistently but it sure is noticeable even looking at it in regular speed.

still not as goofy as...

Adam Kennedy’s uppercut. but you might be onto something, I’ll have to look for it. I think you may be onto something he maybe wasn’t quite doing before when he had such consistent success.

Napoli has to whiff at more fastballs down the middle than any other player on the team...

even when he was batting .300, i begin noticing how many fastballs he whiffs at.

He's always swung that way...

we weren’t complaining about it when he was knocking out jacks at the highest rate for a catcher ever.

wow for a second I thought the homepage was broken

everytime I clicked on “Home” it took me to “Tuesday Pregame” and the rest of the threads from that day. Shift-F5 fixed it, but that was weird.

Poll reminds me of...

“Hey everybody, we’re all gonna get laid!”

for some reason I had that line from Caddyshack stuck in my head yesterday. hey might help, you never know.

So what does all this talk about "the Angels running on fumes" mean?

Doesit mean that if Hunter had gotten a key hit in either of the last two games, the runners he left on base were too tired to run home and score and the Halos would have lost anyway?

No.

The translation is that they are tired after a long road trip, and it is showing by lack of basic execution;
1) Swinging at bad pitches;
     a. Napoli, Morales, Hunter, and Aybar haven’t shown the same patience as earlier in the year.
     b. The last 2 games were dreadful. Kennedy practically gift-wrapped the game yesterday. They just couldn’t accept the charity.
2) Minor execution errors;
     a. In the game they lost last week to Boston after leading 7-5, they gave up 5 runs in one inning with no ball being hit in the air. That was the inning Aybar dropped the ball at 2B, followed by Kendrick double-clutching on an easy DP. That gave the Sox 5 outs that inning.
     b. On Tuesday, Mathis was called for catcher interference. That lead directly to a run (Tostada followed with an HR) in a game we lost by one run.
     c. Yesterday, they also gave away a run when Napoli let the ball get between his legs on a throw to home. That allowed Cano to move to 2B, where he later scored on a BH. and again, we lost by a single run.
     d. I don’t ever recall Napoli allowing so many passed balls.

They could easily have swept the Yankees again. The boys are tired form a tough stretch of games. It’s been a long season, and yet they are within a few victories of another divisional championship. Hopefully, the day off will allow some much needed rest, and then they will return with a renewed focus that appears to have been a victim of a long season and a tough schedule over the past 5 weeks.

My point being that the Halos WOULD have swept the Yankees

had Hunter merely gotten one hit each in two games in key situations handed to him. Except for a few weeks in August, this kind of stuff has been going on all year long.

And tired, shmired. Only catchers have that excuse in baseball. Less than half the team even needs to take a shower after a game.

OK.

But the same level of clutch-hitting failure you correctly ascribe to Torii could have applied to Naps, Izzy, Aybar, Abreu, Rivera, Vlad and in yesterday’s game to Morales. Which implies team-wide fatigue.

Here’s a quote from Scioscia, “I don’t know if there has ever been an off-day more needed by our team than the one we’ll get. It’s been a grind.”

I will take Scioscia’s word for it.

And tired, shmired

Yeah, right. Even in my prime, I’d be wiped out just by trying to keep up with the flights hotels and cities that these guys do over the course of a baseball season. Did you ever play on a baseball team for a 162-game season? I didn’t think so.

Naps looks bad...

at the plate and behind it. Hope he can get his shit together….were gonna need him in Fenway.

Predictions can be fairly accurate when

not a lot has changed.

On a scale from 1-10, 10 being the highest

mike napoli would rock.

UC Riverside?

just sayin… whaaat.

I can't vote in this poll

Because Napoli is not better than Jeff Mathis right now, and I have no idea what will fix his problems. Very frustrating.

A's beat Rangers

good off day

Napoli ISNT the better catcher

And he won’t be as long as he’s grabbing pine. He’s gotta get out there daily, work out of his funk and be 40 hr guy and that above- average catcher we all know he is.

Honestly, I don’t know what Scioscia and the pitching staff has against Napoli but theres no doubt that, even in his slump, his hitting makes up for his sub-Mathis catching.
