Monday Lunch Thread: Lesser of Two Eastils

There is a tiny chance that Boston could sneak up on the Yankees and take the AL East. Were the Angels to sweep New York in their series beginning tonight while Boston swept Kansas City, the AL East leaders would be down to a 2-Game lead going into a three game series against the 2nd place Red Sox.

Were the Red Sox able to take the AL East from the Yankees, they would host the AL Central champions in the ALDS and the Angels would host the wild card Yankees for games 1 and 2.

Would hosting the Yankees in the ALDS be preferable knowing that it could be followed by a possible ALCS with 4 of of 7 games in Fenway "no called 3rd strikes to the home team" Park?

No matter

Where those bloody bastards come from exactly on the east coast, BSPN will pick either to beat us, and we’ll be laughing our way to our next victim in no more than 4 games

I really don't care as long as we get to face Boston and celebrate on that litttle leauge field the call Fenway
Rather get Boston out the way first
I'd rather play the Yankees

But that’s because I’m rightfully paranoid about the Red Sox

I am too

I don’t who I’d rather face first

Yankees 1st to build momentum...

…then steamroller those scumbags from New England

i would rather face the nosux in a 7 game series

only after using the skanks as a “slump buster”…. IM PUMPED FOR PLAYOFF BASEBALL!!!!!!

but he need to finish strong!

who says the Sux would have home field?
Read the previous sentence
It won't matter which one we play first...

…as long as we play to potential, and don’t end up with mystery diseases or key injuries.

Yankees first

Two primary reasons: (1) we have had much better success against the Yankees than the Red Sox, and you have to win the ALDS before worrying about the ALCS; and (2) if the Yanks manage to blow a 9-game lead in the final three weeks, they will be in a big slump and under tremendous pressure in the first round, whereas the Red Sox (in order to catch them) would be the hottest team in baseball over that same span of time.

Rec'd

Of course it’s all conditional: IF the Yankees lose their division lead…

Don't care.

I think you’ll have to go through both to get to the WS anyway.

I don't see it happening if MLB can make it happen

MLB, TBS and Fox want a yanks-sox series with one going to the WS. The best way to make that happen is for yanks to not play us. We won’t get any calls this week if it’s close. MLB is almost as bad as the NBA.

Yanks first, Tigers second

That’s just me though. I’m ok with never facing Boston in the postseason ever again

rather play boston first

since, unlike last year, i think we will take care of business at home and then take 1 of the 2 in boston. then, let NYY have home field, we’ll play them all 7 there if we have to. :)

It really does not matter.

All that matters is how the Halos play.

Strong pitching? (check)
Hot offense? (tbd)
Heads out of their asses on defense and the basepaths? (tbd)

Clean up those last two and nobody hangs with these Angels. Nobody. In any order. On any field. Best of 5 or best of 7. Nobody.

100% agreed

unfortunately the third piece will have to be answered when playoff time comes but until then the pitching needs to keep it up and the offense needs to get hot

No Excuses

Beat your Opponent !

i'd take the Yanks first

we own them, and we know it. you win that series, you gain momentum and heart before attacking Boston. we’ll need both to beat them.

I don't buy into the "we own them" theory.

Texas was sold on the theory that they would sweep the Angels due to prior success and get into the playoff race, almost as if it was a given.

So many intangibles come into play, especially in the ALDS, and the “we own them” attitude can breed complacency, especially when “we owning them” is a tad over .500 ball.

I don't agree

If Tx thought they would sweep us, their assumption was based on a very small sample size, namely this season. The Angels have consistently beaten NY for years and years. So, it’s a safer assumption that we can continue to beat them.

Yanks first

Then momentum into Boston/Detroit

Or Minnesota

Whatever works

That is a good point that I missed

There is always the chance that the team we do not play form the AL East loses in the ALDS… I would love to see Minnesota or Detroit as our ALCS opponent, and feel we have a clear advantage over either of them. In fact, I feel we ave a clear advantage over any team with the exception of the biased officiating that consistently favors the AL EAST ratings queens.

I think playing against Minny would be a great ALCS

It’d be a scoring frenzy

Yankees first

if for no other reason than we’ll be catching them on the slide and limiting the amount of games we have to play in Yankee Stadium

You gotta admit this is an interesting playoff season coming up….The Yankees have historically been Boston’s kryptonite, while Boston has been our kryptonite and we, in turn, have been the Yanks’ kryptonite! It would almost be poetic if the ensuing bloodbath ends up with the CENTRAL division winner taking the AL crown!

Different Yankees in 2009...

They are going to be tough to beat this year. It’s not a slam dunk as everyone here is led to believe.

But, I think the Halos can beat the Red Sox in 5 in the ALDS and then go 7 against the Yankees in the ALCS. I am not comfortable declaring a winner in the ALCS. Too tough to call.

Yankees first

Although I agree with those saying we should just go head to head with Boston and exorcise the demons, it’s in man’s nature to always take the path of least resistance. That patch goes through NY first. Meanwhile, perhaps Boston will already be eliminated for us, and if not, we have built some momentum heading into round 2.

Pitching match-ups?

No one has mentioned pitching match-ups. I’m not going into any deep analysis here, but it looks at first glance like NY has a better rotation than Boston. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Playing them in round 1 would mean they may not be able to throw both of their top 2 pitchers a 2nd time in the series. The Angels, however, have a very strong 1-4. And if we have to face Boston in a best of 7 series, we’d probably have the edge in the match-ups of games 3 and 4 at least. Again, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Of course, this is all assuming NY has a huge meltdown that depends largely on US stepping up our offense. I sure hope it happens, but it seems like wishful thinking. Either way, the cool thing is that it looks like we’re going to the playoffs again. I still don’t take that for granted. I love this era of Angels baseball!

i was just reading the wall street journal

and if you switch “NY” to “europe and asia” and “offense” to “strong-dollar-policy” you have provided the best baseball AND economic analysis on web!

Ha ha

Thanks. I think? Well, Saunders helped prove my point tonight. We’ve got some arms that stack up quite well next to the best of them.

Its prob better to play the Yankees even tho they are a better team than the red sox just cuz we’re the ONLY team in baseball to have a winning record against the yanks.

I wouldnt mind playing the sox tho, it would be SWEEEET to knock the sox out… but then again i said that the last 2 years.

I really doubt the yanks are gonna have meltdown however, we’re pretty much set on playing the sox.

I want Boston first ....you have to get over your fear ....

I want to celebrate in front of their fans

truly the sweetest way

would be to a half-empty fenway already dejected by an early blowout in a sweep.

from your typing.....

to the FSM’s meatballs.

May his Noodly Appendage reach out and touch the Halos!
I honestly don't care. Bring 'em on, whoever it is.
