Guerrero, Angels dominate Mariners - USATODAY.com
Vladimir Guerrero belted his favorite victims with two more home runs, the second a monster shot into the upper deck. Juan Rivera added a three-run homer, Joe Saunders dominated in seven scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Angels reminded Seattle who rules the division with a 10-0 runaway victory on Monday night.
Angels' Joe Saunders puts in a bid for playoffs -- latimes.com
"With the season I've had, I just want to throw up some zeros and try to get as many wins as I can for this team," said Saunders, who is 11-7 with a 5.02 ERA but won only once from June 30 to Aug. 7.
Angels-Mariners Preview - FOX Sports on MSN
The AL West-leading Angels (78-52) continued their tear at the plate Monday, beating Seattle (68-64) 10-0. It was their fourth win in six contests and gave them a six-game lead over Texas and an 11-game cushion on Seattle in the division.

Team Reports - CBSSports.com
With his seven shutout innings Monday, LHP Joe Saunders raised his record to 7-1 with a 3.19 ERA in his career against the Mariners. Saunders is 3-0 in three starts at Safeco Field this season with just one run allowed in 21 innings.
Team Reports II - CBSSports.com
1B Kendry Morales' 33 RBI in August broke Bobby Bonds' club record for the month (31, August 1977) and fell one short of the Angels' club record for any month shared by Don Baylor (July 1979) and Jim Edmonds (July 1995). Morales was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles Monday, his fourth consecutive multi-hit game during which he has gone 12-for-17.
Angels add five to roster; Sean Rodriguez is not among them - Los Angeles Times
The fact that infielder Sean Rodriguez, who is batting .301 with 29 home runs and 93 RBIs for Salt Lake and has extensive big league experience, was not called up has fueled speculation that Rodriguez is the player to be named later in the Scott Kazmir deal.
Torii's Storiis: Emulating the great Ken Griffey Jr.
We're in Seattle, facing the Mariners, and it always takes me back to 1999, my second year in the bigs with the Twins when I finally got to play against a man I admired so much - the great Ken Griffey Jr.
Bell follows Palmer's lead in bullpen - angelsbaseball.com
"I had some success after the All-Star break in the bullpen at Rancho, so I think I'll be fine with this. I'm really looking forward to going out there and saying, 'Here it is. This is the best I've got.'
Three Late Deals - FanGraphs Baseball
The second trade deadline is usually fairly boring, as most of the interesting players don’t clear waivers and teams are unwilling to surrender much in value for a one month rental. This year, however, two NL west clubs made three deals at the final hour, and all of them are kind of interesting.

Hopefully soon
Vlad will be back to punking his other bitch, the Texas Rangers
LosAngel - September 1, 2009
What was it like 30 games in a row where he had a hit against Texas? That was insanity. They (Rangers) ended it with the great beanball wars of 2005/6.
Downing Rules - September 1, 2009
Didn't Buck Showalter end it on purpose
and out of spite? Wasn’t there a game where Vlad struck out the first AB, then BS walked him intentionally each time the rest of the game?
rspencer - September 1, 2009
Yeah
Vlad had hit in something like 45 games in a row. Showalter walked him 4 times one game. I think his one legitimate AB came in the 8th inning and it took a diving catch from the right fielder to end the streak.
Gorbachav5 - September 1, 2009
Where the Hell is Bobby Moesbach! WTF? Why Do we need a third catcher!
KubanKowbell19 - September 1, 2009
Really.
I forgot about that guy. Seemed solid out of the pen.
clover_black - September 1, 2009
i agree i saw this guy in the PCL twice...
and both times he was solid.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - September 1, 2009
Oh hell...the PTBNL IS SEAN RODRIGUEZ!
okay, i dunno how i feel about this Kaz trade anymore. Bummer…
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - September 1, 2009
It's still beyond awesome.
clover_black - September 1, 2009
Bittersweet ...
We’ll miss him, dearly. But he wasn’t going to do much to help our pitching staff in 2009.
Downing Rules - September 1, 2009
Is this confirmed?
LosAngel - September 1, 2009
Rich Thompson tweeted it!

it downgrades it from a "no-brainer"....
to a trade that really is going to depend on Kazmir’s quality performance this year and next.
If Kazmir pitches well this year down the stretch and in the playoffs it’s a great trade regardless of what happens in the future. If he pitches well in the future for the duration of his contract it’s also a great trade even if his impact this year is minor.
If he washes out this hurts a lot more than it did with just the original two players.
That said before S-Rod was mentioned this trade seemed one-sided to me, money aside.
Nashdiesel - September 1, 2009
Even So
It wasn’t clear where Sean Rodriguez fit in the Angels’ plans. He’s not going to displace anyone they currently have; at best, he could have competed with Brandon Wood for an IF job, assuming Figgins leaves (and if he doesn’t, then he’s battling for a utility position). The only other place is LF if Abreu leaves (Rivera moves to RF). Meanwhile, Kazmir is potentially here through 2011. Still a good deal.
jjackflash - September 1, 2009
If Abreu and Vlad both leave we'll have an opening in our outfield.
S-Rod could have filled that. I think what will now happen is we’ll re-sign Figgins to play LF, put Rivera in RF and put Wood at 3b.
Nashdiesel - September 1, 2009
IF Kazmir is healthy and somewhat effective through 2011
I think that’s the point. If it was just the other two prospects, it would have been a good pickup for the Angels regardless, since their minor league pitching depth is awful and they needed someone to be a starter for the next 3 years. But now the trade is only decent for the Angels IF Kazmir is above average and can stay healthy.
Yeah, S-Rod may have been blocked, but that doesn’t mean the Angels didn’t overpay.
Gorbachav5 - September 1, 2009
Our minor league pitching depth was awful?
With Bell, SOS, Reckling, Mendoza, Torres at AAA / AA? That doesn’t really seem that bad to me.
Zu Long - September 1, 2009
And that's not including Walden, who despite the injured season is still a good prospect.
Zu Long - September 1, 2009
Thompson is going to be the KEY callup in this group...
the ’pen is so taxed as it is, I hope Rich can truly earn his title of “reliever.” Bring your best game up to the bigs, Rich! The team needs it.
Downing Rules - September 1, 2009
WHAT MORONS VOTED FOR WILLITS?!?!
Higz - September 1, 2009
I did.
But I’m not sure if I’m moron #1, #2, etc.
3rd Echelon - September 1, 2009
You're #1 in my book
Kidding! :)
Higz - September 1, 2009
Count me as one of those morons
I voted for him, because knowing our manager, he’s probably the only guy who stands a chance to get in the game when it might actually matter. Granted, that will probably be as a pinch runner, but it’s likely the only time one of these guys is put in a situation that matters.
Who do you think is going to make a big impact and why? I’d be interested to know why you think Scossia would put any of these guys in a key situation that actually matters. Maybe SOS, maybe….
LosAngel - September 1, 2009
BTW
Impact to me is doing something when the game actually matters. Pinch hitting, defensive replacement or pitching in a blowout does not really qualify.
LosAngel - September 1, 2009
Rich Thompson
Our biggest need right now is quality bullpen arms. I think the Aussie can help.
Sorry to (indirectly) call you a moron, but Willits should be DFA’d, traded, released, name stricken from team records, blindfolded, duct-taped, stripped, and thrown from a moving van in the middle of the desert
Higz - September 1, 2009
Are you kidding?
He had a great rookie season. He was the only guy on that team who could take a walk. He hasn’t had regular playing time since then to get back to that level, but he’s still a useful player as a 5th OF. I’d play him over Matthews Jr.
Gorbachav5 - September 1, 2009
Kidding?
Sort of. I don’t really want to dump him in the desert.
You seem to be living in 2007. He had a great FIRST HALF of a rookie season. Since then, yeah, he basically has sucked more than Jasmine St. Clair. This team can walk now, so your point about Willits’ ability to do so is a non-issue.
“Regular playing time to get back to that level?” Oh really? Who do you suggest we remove from the lineup to give Reggie Willits this “regular playing time” he needs so badly? Basically you’re saying that Willits is a bench guy who can’t produce off the bench. Uhhh, so what’s the point of having him then?
Higz - September 1, 2009
and that’s A LOT of sucking!
Downing Rules - September 1, 2009
I voted for SOS
but would probably change to Willits.
He’s good for a situational bunt, or a pinch runner. And can give much needed rest to the outfield.
He sucks at baseball in general, but I’d much rather have him on the squad than B-wood trying to prove his worth at limited AB’s.
clover_black - September 1, 2009
Saundo's new nickname for the rest of the year is...
“EASY GAS”
BAAA!
3rd Echelon - September 1, 2009
sounds like what happens after a night of drinking hoppy beer.
clover_black - September 1, 2009
Or what you'd get after dinner at Scioscia's house.
3rd Echelon - September 1, 2009
Why wasn't Sean Rodriguez called up?
I hope the rumors aren’t true that he was the PTBNL in the Kazmir trade. If it is true they really over paid, three prospects and pay all of the remaining $23 million.
310Angel - September 1, 2009
Because he's the PBTNL
Whoever is the PBTNL couldn’t be called up now.
Brickhaus - September 1, 2009
He's going to Tampa Bay next month
mustard_man - September 1, 2009
The Kazmir trade officially pisses me off now.
