I am going to be on Biggsy's show (THE DRIVE with Jeff Biggs) at 4:05 PM with an exclusive update about what I have learned concerning my report about the Player To Be Named Later from the Angels to the Rays to complete the Scott Kazmir trade.

I'll turn on the radio and listen. I have to do some stuff that takes me away from the computer.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
I'll be listening online....

CLAP, CLAP, CLAP CLAP, CLAP!
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
Is this like one of those "stay tuned for more details at 11PM" teasers?
Only to find Rev’s nugget at the last five minutes of the show is “I think it’s Bobby Wilson.”
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
Just turned it on...waiting.
Finally get to use this mini boombox at work for some good.
Brian S (brianguy) - August 31, 2009
IF
I were to give K-Mo an extension, I’d think it would be in to radius of 6 years / 52 mil….
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
I wonder if we'll get the caller from Buena Park. What's his name? Ed?
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
I believe it's Jerry...
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009

Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
Yeah

vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
so, it's already been on three minutes...
what’s the juicy scoop? Or are we still waiting for Quentin’s fly ball to land?
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
Patience, Grasshopper.

Rev says not sure now about Walden after an email from someone
explaining the PTBNL rules
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
Does Henry David Thoreau know that we are trying to trade his pond?
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
I thought he said "Jordan almonds"
rspencer - August 31, 2009
lol
Theo Epstein probably was the one who burned down the pond’s amusement park…
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
There is a reason it's not called the "the player to be named sooner"
Higz - August 31, 2009
Agreed...
but that was one heck of a teaser to get me to consider streaming.
The only streams allowed here in my office are ones that end up in the urinals.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
I can't stream either, but I figure someone here will post the scoop
People at your work can actually hit the urinal? You should see our restroom… yuckers
Higz - August 31, 2009
Yesterday they apologized for not getting to him on the air, that they hadn't meant to leave him on hold.
We laughed.

I jumped the gun on calling Walden and someone really close to this trade emailed me to tell me that there is a list to be revisited after October and Sean Rodriguez and Walden are on the list.
Thanks to Jeff Biggs and AM-830 and sorry about the phone.
Rev Halofan - August 31, 2009
Are you completely without phone service right now?
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009

thats crazy. I wonder if its smokey in Santa Clarita right now where my grandparents are.
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Probably is terrible there.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
I grabbed that photo from the LAT start page...
is there another one on there now?
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
yeah there is bigger one
that is different than yours
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Look at the link I posted, it's a different photo from yours.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
I'm so dumb. Here's the link.
http://www.latimes.com/
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
Yep, don't link in the title...
but what I am saying is that I went to your link and LAT had a flex your power .org spam that jumped out on the screen. Not a pop up, it was just a huge-ass ad.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
I don't get that ad, but I don't know why you're getting it and I'm not.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
i didnt get it either
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Downing Rules must be special.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
"FLEX YOUR POWER . org"
jumped out at me, but I saw the image in a split second before that advertisement clouded my window.
Wow.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
That image is just amazing.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
You think that is amazing?
Check out this!
Stirrups - August 31, 2009
This is more amazing!
Remarkable how the tire “flares” in some areas.
sothball - August 31, 2009
Also
Here is the webcam from the observatory, looking at the TV and cell towers. One of the JPL bloggers just reported a couple of minutes ago that they just lost their brand new backup power system. If this apge goes dark, it is because the fire just took out their primary power, too.
Stirrups - August 31, 2009
Cell or landline?
sothball - August 31, 2009
So it's over?
Waaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!11 :P
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
Indeed.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
If S-Rod is on the list...
then he’d be a no-brainer. Yikes. I sure hope that Kazmir is not damaged goods.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
and the Rays can take whoever they want on that list?
Fred Fredrix - August 31, 2009
yeah...
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
That's usually how it works.
You can get a short list of “available players” to choose from.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
S-Rod
will be our next Bobby Jencks. Thanks for nothing, Reagins!
LazorkoRules - August 31, 2009
Except SRod is not a bad-attituded,alcoholic,large guy...
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009

Also, the Angels didn’t get anything in exchange for Jenks. They got Kazmir in this deal.

howiestheman - August 31, 2009

opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
hey... that's what happens :P
if you pay attention to baseball, that call was really pointless.
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
I know. That's why I put "lol" after my comment. I was kidding you.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
i know. that's why i put a "smiley-tongue-out-guy" at the end of mine.
::winky-face::
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
You guys take all this too seriously. Do we need to take this outside? ;)
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
Too much smoke out there.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
no joke.
i’m up in the high desert, and we’re getting all kinds of smoke/ash up here! it’s crazy out there
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
I have a friend who lives in Rosamond, and she's been telling me about it.
We own a cabin in Blue Jay and the smoke has been trapped in Daly Canyon for the past two weeks, starting with that other fire up north. Right now I am eyeing the fire in Oak Glen. It’s a long way from Blue Jay but it’s still too close.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
A couple of weeks ago I came in on the I40, then I15. I could not believe how bad the fire smoke was.
Stirrups - August 31, 2009
For the record, Crestline has among the very worst air quality in all SoCal.
Crap blows up into there, and cannot get back out.
Stirrups - August 31, 2009
Ok, winky-face emoticon right back atcha. Heh. I thought I had pissed you off.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
hahahaha no
not at all
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
If S-Rod goes.......
its all Figgy’s fault.
LOL
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Are you sure
it’s not related to some GA – lazy nexus?
rspencer - August 31, 2009
" Vlad's declining...... let's get Adam Dunn
Yeah, let’s get a who strikes out every 3 at bats!
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
i'm sure the DBacks are pissed about Mark Reynolds' K's too...
strikeouts are not the end of the world. while lots of K’s are not necessarily desirable, a high OPS (which power hitters have) are. you deal with the K’s and take your chances.
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
yeah .995 OPS is not too shabby
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
He's got 100 BB's too this year
and a HR ever 12.6 AB’s
That would be useful
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
I don't know
I’d always prefer the .300-hitting hitter balanced offensively….
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
he's hitting .282
its not like he’s Jeff Mathis out there.
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
+1
Dunn’s defense sucks. we know. but he’s still a useful player.
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
no more of a defense liability than
Bobby or Vlad right now IMO
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
truth
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
but.....
a career .250 guy
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
but Career OPS avg is still over .900
and 40 HR’s a year
which are not numbers that too many people on the Halos (Kendry is probably the only one) can accomplish.
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
i still think Nappy can
but he’ll only ever get the chance as the DH…. hopefully next year.
howiestheman - August 31, 2009
yeah Naps could
if he got 500+ AB ’s in a year
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Vlad isn't the player
that Dunn is now. No offense, I’d take Dunn over Vlad right now without question.
jimmuscomp - August 31, 2009
It's Mel!
lol
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
Oh dear lord....
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
Everybody here on HH, please take a vow:

Yes Mel.....
we got Kazmir to be in our playoff bullpen….
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
What a wingnut!
Did he really suggest that? Nice.

HAHA
yeah thats what Ryan’s on the payroll for!

Stirrups - August 31, 2009

its tomorrow in Asia ;)
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Music in the background FTW.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
Tony's voice is annoying.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
So is mine, and worse, which is why I don't call in.
People probably don’t want to hear Minnie Mouse calling Biggsy.
opiejeanne - August 31, 2009
So who is it?
haloak - August 31, 2009
Jeff Mathis
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 31, 2009
S-Rod is PTBNL?
Wow that sucks! Great trade for Rays.
haloak - August 31, 2009
Yep, if it is SRod, they for sure got the best of this trade.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
not if we win the WS this year.
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Agreed, but ...
Not sure how a guy who doesn’t throw deep into ball games is going to help stretch out our bullpen.
I sure hope there’s one more move coming, like a decent middle reliever. Sure would’ve been nice if Justin Speier didn’t suck, Scot Shields wasn’t injured or Arredondo hadn’t taken a step back.
(Says to self: “W6G”) … all right … I’m back on.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
Because 6 1/3 innings of Kazmir
requires less bullpen stress than 2 2/3 innings of Trevor Bell.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 31, 2009
ZING!
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
Great comparison ...
however, Kazmir only averages 5-1/2 innings per start in 2009… That’s still 3-1/2 innings of relief needed in his starts.
In the last three years, 0 CG’s and he is regularly in the 100’s pitch count in the 6th inning. LINK to BBREF
Downing Rules - August 31, 2009
He was injured to start the year
he’s averaged 6.125 IP/start since the all-star break.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 31, 2009
I probably sound like a bitch again
But I think S-rod will end up having a better career then Howie. I love S-rod’s power, Howie is more of a gap hitter.
haloak - August 31, 2009
agreed
had no choice, just imagine what might happen if we starts Bell and/or O’Sullivan in the postseason.
jjlooney - August 31, 2009
Division series is only 3 man rotation. Champ and World Series is 4 man I believe.
So we don’t need a 5th starter for the postseason.
haloak - August 31, 2009
It depends
on the schedule. Some division series require 4 starters. Last year, there was debate over whether the Angels should take the shorter series (meaning fewer off days), on the theory that the Angels had a better 4th starter than Boston.
jjackflash - August 31, 2009
Either way we don't need a 5th starter
I think getting Kazmir is for September and next couple years since Lackey may not be back. If he pitches well he will be in the 3 or 4 man playoff rotation.
haloak - August 31, 2009
Right-O
The fifth starter, be it Santana, Saunders or Kazmir, adds serious depth to the ’pen for the playoffs.
jjackflash - August 31, 2009
I don't know
You could drive a 747 through the hole in S-Rod’s swing. I think he needs the opportunity to see if it corrects itself at the major league level, but on his brief stints up here he just hasn’t made enough contact.
Still, that’s way to good of a throw-in for this deal. Kazmir will be useful, but TB definitely got the best of it.
Gorbachav5 - August 31, 2009
Interesting
Yes usually the PTBNL isn’t the best player of the bunch at the time of the trade. I’m so confused.
haloak - August 31, 2009
not so confusing.
Rodriguez is on the 40 man roster, meaning he would have to clear waivers to get traded. No way he gets all the way to Tampa without being claimed, hence they will “name him later” (after the season) when he wouldn’t have to clear. Basically just a loophole in the waiver rules.
dmhead - August 31, 2009

…not very happy….after the first they were saying “game over” and arguing about whether they still had a chance for the playoffs
The Furious Bat of Howie47 - August 31, 2009
yeah and its pretty much turned into a
“woe is us” fest over there…….but they get like that with every loss
Kinda like folks here.
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Kinda more doom and gloom though
…a lot of in fighting a lot of bitching with each other….one of the guys was saying “well we have to go 35-0 the rest of the way to have a shot”
i dunno if we’re that bad here…
The Furious Bat of Howie47 - August 31, 2009
thats because we are the ones in the lead.
norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009

norcaliangelsfan - August 31, 2009
Bold, Random Guess:
S-Rod will be an average Major Leaguer. ( if he becomes a star, I will lose a testicle by 2014…)
vlad IS my man - August 31, 2009
Don't bet on the family jewels...EVER!
…ah, the errors of youth…
sothball - August 31, 2009
that sounds about right.
Remember all the hype about Alberto Callaspo? Or even Alexi Casilla? I think they’ve done a pretty good job of picking which of their plethora of middle infielders to keep. S-Rod is intriguing, but I’d be fine if hes the one to go (over Walden).

here's a crazy thought, i might not even be awake...
this could be an ambien induced sleep blogging occurrence. maybe it’s brandon wood! the organization might think that s-rod has more upside and versatility than b-wood. think about it, s-rod can play the outfield and we have some aging outfielders who need to be replaced, we have good middle infielders (aybar, izzy, howie & srod) and possibly the organization wants to re-sign figgy, keep him at third and go w/an infield of kmo, howie/izzy, aybar & figgy w/s-rod as the utility guy for the infield and outfield. oh shit i think i’m waking up…
thejd - August 31, 2009
S-Rod was NOT called up yesterday....
It has to be him as the PTBNL. Good call, Rev.
