FINAL SCORE IN L.A. of ANAHEIM: Oakland Athletics 4, Angels 3
Jered Weaver was gassed after 6 innings. The bullpen was running on fumes after showing up in the 3rd inning on Friday. Weaver lost his W and relief scrub Rafael Rodriguez got the L, but it was Jose Arredondo, masterful in two innings last night, who loaded the bases and saw every runner score to tie the game. You know what they call that? A massacre. But wait, it gets worse later in the 9th inning...

Chone Figgins is on base with one out and Bobby Abreu hits a long flyball for out #2. Figgins tags up and breaks for 2B. He gets there but the tag gets him and the massacre is over. Figgins made the first out on the bases in Thursday night's 2-0 loss in getting picked off at 2B against the Athletics and he made the last out of Saturday night's loss trying to reach 2B.
However, when you are getting 2/3 of your night's runs on the rare Maicer Izturis HR and Jered Weaver nibbles so much that his 6 inning shutout costs him 119 pitches, victory is not exactly destiny with a gassed bullpen and day game tomorrow before a road trip.

Mired in a slump
And Texas is thriving.
chairmanofthebar - August 29, 2009
yet still 4 games up...........
says alot about our team.
norcaliangelsfan - August 29, 2009
As bad as we've been playing lately, it's actually kind of shocking that we're still 4 up on them.
Zu Long - August 29, 2009
I guess when you're a historical loser like Texas
winning 5 of your last 11 can be considered ‘thriving,’ but I think it’s a pretty weak definition.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 29, 2009
what does history have to do with the present...?
deejayelleseven - August 29, 2009
Zuh?
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 29, 2009
Why is Scioscia not an option?
Seriously. He has as much impact on the game as some of the players do.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 29, 2009
it's not like soth has a good bullpen to count on
the team needs another person in the pen to step up. Soth doesn’t has much of an option other then to see if some of these chumps can step up.
semperfi1645 - August 29, 2009
Spot on here Marine.....
rec’d
norcaliangelsfan - August 29, 2009
Not really...
he needs like three starters in a row to go 7 or 8 innings…
The bullpen sucks, yes, but they are TIRED. Out of gas. The Trevor Bell and SoS experiments have left them in shambles.
Downing Rules - August 29, 2009
No, he doesn't have a great bullpen to work with
but he has some options in the bullpen that are better than others.
And he chose not to use those options.
And actually, since the All-Star Break, our bullpen has been quite good.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 29, 2009
And he chose not to use those options since we need to meter out their usage. We have a stretch of quite a few games in a row here including a brutal stretch in NYY, Boston and Texas.
Downing Rules - August 29, 2009
Bulger hasn't pitched in 3 days
he’s better there than Rafael Rodriguez.
And a win against Oakland counts as much in the standings as a win against any of those other teams.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 29, 2009
Yikes...
I didn’t realize the Bulge was well rested. That’s pretty weak.
Downing Rules - August 29, 2009
Yes...
Why choose Dondo after 2 big innings last night when Bulger hasn’t thrown in the series? I thought it was dumb at the time…
Also, Fuentes is in the bullpen – you can use him more than just in save situations. But that would take too much forward thinking or innovation. God forbid a manager think outside the box.
Maybe Bulger is hurt a little – that might explain it. Otherwise, stupid move by Scioscia.
jimmuscomp - August 30, 2009
the bullpen..
in particular jepsen, bulger, oliver, and palmer have all really stepped up. fuentes has been eh… speier and loux were shown the door. there were better options than rat rod. i didnt have a probem with dondo coming in, but rat rod in that situation when bulger hadnt pitched the previous night makes no sense
BigBangRobbDawgg - August 29, 2009
I'm with Casey here
Counting on RafRod and Arrendon’tdo to hold the lead instead of Bulger and Jepsen was a mistake.
hk47 - August 30, 2009
sosh should be in there...
this is crunch time … i know he doesnt look at the standings but uh someone might want to remind sosh he’s in an actual race this season… texas isnt going away, get the freakin vets in the game esp. in pressure situations FFS. freakin rat rod ? really ?
BigBangRobbDawgg - August 29, 2009
that being said... dondo started this shit sandwich

dondo was good the other day. not sosh fault for seeing if he could put together some friggin consistency. Bag and tag dondo.
semperfi1645 - August 29, 2009
the other day = last night, and he pitched 2 innings
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 29, 2009
yes the other day does equal yesterday, glad you can read
here is a cookie. Btw, he wouldn’t be the first reliever asked to pitch on consecutive days. He should have been able to handle it today.

Sosh's logic this season has been perplexing at times
Why allow a strugling pitcher to continue yet again, seriously? We’ve seen this scenario repeatedly this year…seems like a conundrum to me.
HALO N BRIMSTONE - August 29, 2009

Is Rich Thompson ready to head back to Anaheim?
Wonder how his time in the SLC has gone.
Downing Rules - August 29, 2009
I thought he was in Arkansas.
opiejeanne - August 29, 2009
really?
SHE’s in AR, but I think Rich is still in SLC. That’s why she was lamenting being apart for so long (I read her blog once since Rich went back down and that was the only story I caught — it was just the other day).
Downing Rules - August 29, 2009
I haven't read it in a while. I thought she was traveling with Rich and that's why she was in AK.
I probably misunderstood something she wrote.
opiejeanne - August 29, 2009
AK = Alaska...
is she on a cruise? ;P
Downing Rules - August 29, 2009
Doh! Arkansas. Knew I should have written it out.
opiejeanne - August 29, 2009
Dude - he ruled the night before and has
been good recently. Scioscia asked him to come back and throw an inning after two big innings the night before. That blowup is 50/50 on Scioscia and Dondo.
jimmuscomp - August 30, 2009
I haven't been this mad after a loss for a while
there is simply no good damn reason for us to have lost. None.
HaloDutch - August 29, 2009

Blame of the Game: Rally Thread
Bwaaahahahaha! Just kidding!
Dono Romantico - August 29, 2009
why does scioscia always seem to take the blame.....?
deejayelleseven - August 29, 2009
i dont know
maybe because dondo pitched 2 innings last night and bulger hasnt pitched since wed?
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 29, 2009
this is the major leagues the PLAYERS get paid to do their job well.
I fail to see how it’s fair to place the blame on scioscia
deejayelleseven - August 29, 2009
well
a manager puts the best he has on the field, and decides when to do it.
tonight, a dondo who pitched 2 innings the night before is not better than a rested bulger.
heck, i would have been fine with him putting rodriguez in there to start the 7th.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 29, 2009
And the managers get paid to MANAGE well
that includes putting in a well-rested good pitcher instead of a poor pitcher on short rest.

Turned on the radio to catch up on the game. Up 3-0 with 1 on and Arrendondo pitching. Next pitch = 2 on. Oh shit. Bad karma. Turned off the radio.
Too late. Got home and turned on TV and saw game tied 3-3. Next pitch = 3-4. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Sorry guys.

BigBangRobbDawgg - August 29, 2009
Why are our Starters only lasting 5-6 innings?
Weaver has struggled with pitch count his whole career and then we got guys like Bell only going 2 innings. I can’t believe the 180 our pitching has taken this year.
EG Halo Fan - August 29, 2009
I can
given the injuries (and a DEATH) that the rotation has endured all year long.
Most teams would be packing it in right now for the winter with the depth-testing we’ve had.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 29, 2009
The rotation is not the overwhelming issue, case in point:tonight's game.
HALO N BRIMSTONE - August 29, 2009
But it is a factor
When we don’t have to use the bullpen, our chances of winning are considerably higher. Thus we need the starters to get deeper into the game.
I can see your point Casey about all that has happened to the staff, but it just seems so strange that it fell apart for so many guys all at the same time.
EG Halo Fan - August 29, 2009
agree
(aside from the strange lack of using Bulger)
The pen has been taxed of late. That’s what I’m telling myself to get over this loss.
Downing Rules - August 29, 2009
it would be a factor one way or the other...
if the rotation was nails all year going deep into games… they’re gonna be gassed going into sept/oct… maybe the ray of light is that both the rotation and the bullpen have been eh all year… there’s really only one way to go from here and that’s up… and just think that the angels have the record they do despite the pitching problems. in reality if/when the halos make the playoffs… your looking at 3 of lackey/kazmir/weaver/saundo/voodoo to be your playoff rotation… bullpen in theory gets stronger from the other 2 starters going to the pen.. and you no longer have the ratrod/dondo/speier(in the past) of the world as options in the pen
BigBangRobbDawgg - August 29, 2009
I hope Don't-do is optioned to AAA and not Raf Rod, Dondo is leaking some serious oil.

Every time I go to a game, which is usually only once or twice a season, the team does something like this. For the love of god, JASON BULGER. MATT PALMER. THE GUY SELLING HOT DOGS. ANY of those guys are better than Rodriguez and all of them know this. Jesus, let Figgy pitch.
Terribly managed. I mean, just awful. Daric Barton gets to see Rodriguez despite the fact that he’s a lefty. If Arredondo pitched two innings yesterday and was still given enough rope to hang himself tonight, then, well, why not Oliver? Moreover, why the hell was Arredondo in there after he gave up a hit and a walk? Isn’t that code for “take me out, coach?”
Ugh.
