FINAL SCORE IN ANAHEIM: Angels 4, Tigers 2
Making his first start in 19 days, Joe Saunders returned to his 2008 all-star form by beating the Detroit Tigers. Saunders went 5 innings, giving up 4 hits while striking out 6, with his only mistake being a 2-run 5th inning home run to Adam Everett.
Offensive highlighted included a first inning 2-run homer run from Torii Hunter, his first since coming off the disabled list. The Angels also took advantage of the Detroit battery by swiping 5 bases, two by Chone Figgins. Figgins also added a run scoring hit in the 4th inning when he singled home Gary Matthews, Jr.
With the win, the Angels snapped a 3-game losing streak and avoided their first home sweep in over 2 years.

19 days rest and he is a good 5 inn pitcher
I say claim B. Looper off waivers
Angel Aviator - August 26, 2009
Where have you heard Looper was put on waivers?
Has he cleared?
WiHaloFan - August 26, 2009
Come on m8 inside dope
Word on the street is Melvin has also put Hoffy along with Mike Cameron, Jason Kendall, Craig Counsell, and Felipe Lopez on waivers to see what they might be offered
Angel Aviator - August 26, 2009
looper has the ability to start or be a BP guy
He could be that 5th starter and move to the pen for the postseason. He has done both ( playoffs/RP) before
Angel Aviator - August 26, 2009
inside dope...
sounds legit to me.
clover_black - August 26, 2009

All around good day..

raven191 - August 26, 2009
Certainly was hot on the field, temperature-wise.
Downing Rules - August 26, 2009

The game was blacked out for me today,so unfortunately,I did not see the hit..

raven191 - August 26, 2009
Fuentes gets it for nailing two Tigers on their way out of Anaheim!
firebird81 - August 26, 2009

red floyd - August 26, 2009
As mentioned by Raven, you forgot to mention Vlad's 1,000th hit as an Angel...
1,000 hits in 5 years? Jesus-shit.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - August 26, 2009
that's
5-plus:
2004 – 206
2005 – 165
2006 – 200
2007 – 186
2008 – 164
2009… 79 & counting = 1000 (& counting)
Brian S (brianguy) - August 26, 2009
5 1/4th really...
Still, how long did it take GMJ just to reach 1,000. 10 years?
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - August 26, 2009
yeah
I just wanted to make sure nobody read that to mean he was in his 5th season here. plus I got to look it up and run the numbers myself for fun’s sake.
but it is pretty remarkable, especially considering his huge number of injuries the last season and a half, plus 2005 I believe.
and let’s just put it this way, I wasn’t even aware GMJ had 1,000 hits period. that’s how bad that is.
Brian S (brianguy) - August 26, 2009
LOL...
yeah GMJ got his CAREER 1,000th hit earlier this season…big whoopie.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - August 27, 2009

it was Dr. Robert.

What a pic!
Where’d you get this?
Brody - August 26, 2009
From the man with a foolish grin.
44FAN - August 26, 2009
Looking at the attendance, this was probably taken during the 5th inning,
as the photographer was returning to his/her car to “beat the rush”.
Life was pretty lonely inside the park in those days…
Stirrups - August 27, 2009
Did rusoviet suffer the ban hammer and cycle? LOL
44FAN - August 26, 2009
I think so. The entire thread disappeared.
I had walked away from the computer with his post on the screen. I tried to answer someone’s comment and got the “closed for posting” message. When I renewed the page, the whole thing disappeared.
Big loss.
opiejeanne - August 26, 2009

I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Rusoviet. I’m tryin’ real hard to be a shepherd.
Rev Halofan - August 26, 2009
It was a small surreal moment when the page disappeared,
but I figured our local tyrant had had taken action.
opiejeanne - August 27, 2009
You mean the sky isn't falling?
linkbruin - August 26, 2009
Last night's game ended before I went to bed
The post-mortum from last night was amusing. Is the sky still falling?
Brody - August 26, 2009
Went to the game today
aside from the obvious bullshit that was the ‘announced attendance of 36,000 fans’ (it filled up by the 4th inning, but it was no where near 30,000, let alone 36,000. I’d guess 24,000 of us made the trip…but I guess that was the season-seat folks not showing up.), the best part of today’s game was this exchange from a 5 year old boy and his mother when Torii Hunter came up in the first inning, and was up on the jumbotron:
Boy: Mommy, why do some people have black faces?
Mom (horrified and whispering as she looks around): Because that’s just the way they are
Boy (after a pause): Why do they choose that?
Mom: We’ll talk later.

Don’t feel too bad…Every time my daughter (3 yo) sees an African American she asks………..

My daughter was 3 or 4, and a guy came to fix the fridge.
My daughter exclaimed, “He’s the same color as my chocolate cake!”

vlad IS my man - August 26, 2009
"paid" attendance, not turnstile action.
I was there too. I correctly chose “B” on the guess the attendance game specifically becuase it was the highest number offered and I knew that most folks would look around and pick lower, forgetting about all those fair-weather fans who own season tix in the right field bleachers but refuse to abandon their day job and roast in the mid-day fire that is the SoCal August sun.
Stirrups - August 27, 2009
I had some of the few seats in the park in the shade
suck on that. ;-D
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 27, 2009
I was left field, baby. Shade the entire game.
On the downside, I was partnering with my sale team and hosting a contingent of 50 from a large local corporation. And my major contribution was to cook for them all. On the parking lot. In the sun. Three grills going at once. That was fun, but boy did I eat it in that heat.
Stirrups - August 27, 2009
Left field?
You must mean under the overhang then, right?
Because the left field seats, the ones behind the bullpen and in that area, at least from my vantage point, were cookin’ all game.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 27, 2009
Yep. Under the overhang...
Stirrups - August 27, 2009
Also, in my Angels-watching career, just fairly recently
I’ve been to:
-Vlad’s 1000th Angel hit game
-GMJ’s 1000th career hit game
-G.A.‘s 1000th RBI game
-DaVanon’s cycle game
Not bad for sorta randomly choosing my games.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 26, 2009
I saw Luis Sojo punch Ed Sprague right in front of me on the third base line...
count for anything?
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - August 26, 2009
OT -- Hokie Joe's weight
Just caught the highlights on MLBN.
The Colonel looks like he lost a little weight during rehab.
red floyd - August 26, 2009
best thing about torri's home run?
…torri would’ve caught it
hittheg - August 27, 2009
but what would torii have done?
daze - August 27, 2009
He would have torrentially torn it into shreds on a torrid run.
Downing Rules - August 27, 2009
My lovely wife dvr's all the games for me.
I saw theJon Wilhite story again and was still moved.
Then I saw “What would Mike do?” was coming up next. I thought it would be a Scoiscia strategy show. Not!!!!
A car show. Oh well, a minor dissappointment to(night)day.
Saunders looked sharp.
