Final Score in Tomorrowland: Tigers 5, Angels 3
Everybody was awarding Mike Scioscia manager of the year and rationalizing Ervin Santana in the Post-Season bullpen but a week ago, now suddenly with starting pitching as shaky as it has been all season, with the singles-slapping offense not bunching them together, and with no rest for weeks, who should begin abandoning the Angels faster than the pop from their bats and the movement from their fastballs?
Their fans, who emptied out of the Big A at 9:30 in a tight game that ended up lasting until almost 10:30. Yes, the high-expectation, front-running beachcombers of October 2002 are not getting any wins in three days and are whinier than a Shaker chaparone at Prom. Of course, the local press offers pouting editorials by LA TIMES blogger Steve Bisheff lamenting no superstar trade, calls last year's all star Joe Saunders "a charade" as he disappears in importance covering a team with the 3rd best record in baseball but no Kobe Bryant let alone even a Roy Halladay. Steve, Why so serious? We didn't get Roy Halladay and then Roy got shelled in two consecutive starts worse than Sean O'Sullivan or Trevor Bell. WAHHHHHHHH!
Then there is OC Register /FreedomBlogging's blogger Mark Whicker trying to pick a fight with Brandon Wood supporters thumping his 44-DD chest (biggest cans in the press box) and asking "Where are you Woood lovers now?" ... and then there is an echo in the blog responses. Of course, Whicker will shut his fat trap about the superiority of Figgy for a few days as he focuses on sniffing some jock he has expertly analyzed as the key to the season, writing a column that will be a series of questions posing as analysis, gutlessly making sure to put nothing on the line.
The world has not ended, the Angels have a four game lead in the West. You professional girls can all abandon ship, this team had the wining run at the plate tonight and the tying run there last night. Go root for the Dodgers, your brand of whine is not in vintage.

his gidp tonight
came on a diving play by the 3rd baseman. Their defense saved 4 runs easy tonight. Doesn’t make me feel much better though.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 25, 2009
If the 3rdbaseman can dive for a ball...
…and still turn the DP, it’s likely he’s not the only player that turns that DP. Plus, it’s no. 14. That’s a ton for a guy that sat out half the season and can’t play the field.
Turks Teeth - August 25, 2009 via mobile
it was scalded
wasn’t the garden variety 2 hopper to short on a pitch a foot inside.
i;m a results guy too, but it was a nice play.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 25, 2009
There are a lot of good 3b this year.
I suspect Longoria, Beltre, Lowell/Youkilis, Figgins, Inge all make that play. Still a nice play, but the point is, Vlad runs slow, does not adjust to situations, and hits too many balls predictably to infielders in critical situations. EIGHT LOB. My lord, save the meek. The man was a giant in his prime. But it’s humbling to watch him in his decline. It hurts more because the isolated power is still there to give fans the taste of the chalice, even as the good knight keeps falling off the horse.

Bottom line is, this game was there for us to win, and we didn’t get it done. Even in the 9th against Rodney we had a good chance, send Abreu ffs, or double steal. Not aggressive enough in the 9th.

the heart of our order has been a load of FAIL for the last few games, so hopefully they’ll work on that. Torii should be dropped back to 6th until he really gets his swing going. K-Mo should be batting cleanup, as he’s now the best combination of power/contact that we have on our team.

clover_black - August 25, 2009
The rules here allow for optimism...
…and pessimism both in reasonable amounts. Browbeating fans for complaining when the team loses perfectly winnable games is as annoying as fans who whine during winning streaks. The team has lost two straight series, and its two best pitchers have looked highly beatable. If anytime is a right time to bitch, it’s now. The pennant race has begun. If we make it to the playoffs, we face Detroit or Boston. These games matter.
Turks Teeth - August 25, 2009 via mobile
i'm not down on anything you accuse me (by citing "my rules") of being down on
I am down on fans bolting for the exits and local sportswriters going straight into suicide mode from last week’s cocksure mode which indicates an inherent fickleness about their belief in this team.

Downing Rules - August 25, 2009
I hope you're not saying I was brow-beating anyone.
Sorry if my attempt to keep my own pessimism at bay offends you.
opiejeanne - August 25, 2009
Doesn't offend me.
I’m stoic about losses. But I respect the right of fans to bitch. For example, I read scareduck’s site as much as this, and Rob M. can bitch about the moon rising on a Thursday. He’s a veritable bitch artist.
But among every group of fans, there are those that deal with losses by complaining about those who complain, which is just another species of complaint in the end. And sometimes it feels like a litmus test or purity ball. I’m not saying you crossed that line, but recognize that complaint and misery set a sweet hurdle for fans to vault over when victory returns. Complaint is fucking essential. ( I spend my quota on you tonight as a tribute! )

How does everybody feel about Saunders coming back today?
You guys think he can hold his own against Jackson?
I’ve lost a good chunk of change from the last 2 games hoping they would at least win 1 against Detroit who had been the third worst road team in the AL.
Now it comes down to today and i’m afraid to pull the trigger to get the $$ from the last 2 because i don’t know what to expect from Saunders. Can anyone give me insight on what to expect today?
Thanks
Freddyd - August 26, 2009
Broomage. Jackson is a dang good pitcher and Saunders was real shaky last time out and rough edges are expected. I would not be betting against the Tigers today.

I was hoping that the fact that the Angels are the only team in the majors that has yet to have a four-game losing streak this season and have not been swept at home this season would work in my favor but you guys don’t think the bats can get to Jackson eh?

Question
Was Abreu out at the plate? I was at the game last night and didn’t see a good replay. It was hard to tell from the angle they showed.
Gorbachav5 - August 26, 2009
I have heard that he was from those who watched at home with their DVR’s. But, the Terrace Level boos said otherwise.
Downing Rules - August 26, 2009
I was trying to figure out why in the heck was Clit Thomas in right field for Magglio Ordonez. That was the defensive substitution of the week, due to his grab of Kendry’s ringing drive.
Downing Rules - August 26, 2009
Yeah that surprised me
I didn’t remember hearing it get announced, and then all of a sudden the dude is making a leaping grab. Magglio would have never gotten to that.
Scioscia got out-managed this game. He continues to make the bonehead move of starting Quinlan against lefties when Morales needs to be playing every day (for his D and his O). He let Lackey push him into sending him out there against a lefty who had just hit a HR against him when Lackey already had thrown 116 pitches.
Scioscia’s a quality manager and I give him the benefit of the doubt most times. Those were two unequivocably stupid decisions.
Gorbachav5 - August 26, 2009
I beg to differ. You need to rest Kendry for the final stretch. Going to need a few extra fumes in the tank for the Monday game in NY and then three-game set in Boston starting the next day 9/14 to 9/17 and a critical series in Texas right after that followed by the Yanks in Anaheim. All part of a 21 games in 21 days grueling almost final stretch. No days off during that stretch. Woof.

time to seperate the fans from posers
having been a fan since I was a kid and the L.A Angels were the CA Angels. I am insulted by how moody some of these “fans” are. Sometimes your team loses, it happens! Go back and look at the team back them and compare it to now and you’d appreciate how much better this franchise is as a whole.
