Final Score in Canada: Angels 3, Blue Jays 8
The Angels had just solved one problem by sending 4th Starter Sean O'Sullivan down to the minors to make way for Joe Saunders returning on Wednesday. Handed an opportunity to be "the man," rookie 5th Starter Trevor Bell pretty much wrote himself a ticket back to Salt Lake City with a 1.2 inning 6-run mauling in the SkyDome. The logical choice to pitch in his place on Friday would seem to be Matt Palmer. September callups from the minors are coming soon and a beleaguered Angels bullpen got 3+ innings out of scrub-arm Rafael Rodriguez.

Were there any highlights? Raf-Rod and Shane Loux had decent mops and Jason Bulger needed a little work so he bounced one in the dirt, walked a man and then got a DP to get out of a bases loaded jam. Vlad was 3-5. Bottom line is that the rotation will have to get shuffled up a little more, and soon, and that the 6-4 road trip is something that only looks disappointing in hindsight as the home cooking awaits us for 7 games against Detroit and Oakland with a 5.5 game lead over the Rangers.

How come Terri Bell isn't one of the choices?
Moondoggy - August 23, 2009
Bell?
Figgi4life - August 23, 2009
It is there now
I meant to type “Bell” but I typed “Aybar” instead. You know how easy it is to confuse those two, right?
Rev Halofan - August 23, 2009
they both have "b's" in them
and almost the same amount of letters…I can see it
Moondoggy - August 23, 2009
How come KCOP has such lousy HD?
We deserve better than this crap.
bc56274 - August 23, 2009
Telecasts this year have
been especially crappy
Rev Halofan - August 23, 2009
when we're on the road
don’t we use the local feeds?
Moondoggy - August 23, 2009
psssst. that isn't HD.
clover_black - August 23, 2009
since when did KCOP get HD?
daze - August 23, 2009
They don't.
But T-W does have a KCOP-HD channel.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda...
Let the second guessing begin about not acquiring more pitching prior to the trading deadline. Bell and SOS were / are not ready for prime time; our biggest move yet has been waiving Speier.
mustard_man - August 23, 2009
Aaron Harang
just had an emergency appendectomy – had we acquired him would you be the first lamenting our giving up players for him?
Rev Halofan - August 23, 2009
We'll never know.........
mustard_man - August 23, 2009
We do know that O'Sullivan and Bell ain't working out quite as well as Halladay...

bfd.541t happens.
In his 4 starts since the trade deadline he has dleivered 30 innings pitched and only 11 earned runs. With only 3 walks against 24 K’s.
That’s a 2.72 ERA from a workhorse.
Stirrups - August 23, 2009
3.3 ERA, actually...
11ER/30innings*9 = 3.3
red floyd - August 23, 2009
Bejeebus. You are right. I must have been really worked over last night.
I know exactly how I got to 2.27. But I have no idea as to what I was thinking when I decided to use that particular equation.

That's great.
Thank you for the ten minutes of amusement, and even though I don’t know a soul on that team, I recognize the types of people who are friends with my kids.

no biggie.....
Angels always suck playing in Toronto.

I think we should give the young dudes a break.....
Trevor and SOS are what, 21, 22? It is the rare pitcher who can come up from the minors and pitch consistently in the Show at that age. I would far rather the Soth give these guys a chance (and benefit from the experience) than overpay an aging veteran pitcher, or worse, get a head case like Padilla on the team. Both SOS & Bell have excellent potential to help the Angels, maybe not so much this year, but later on down the line.
hbhalofan - August 23, 2009
this isn’t little league. we want wins, not practice games. that being said, SOS started off really nicely and by the end of this tenure, he was falling apart. bell lucked out in his first win and it showed in today’s game. i’m really hoping saunders can become the pitcher he was in the early part of the year, but we need some good arms and its a bummer that the young guys aren’t able to pull it off just yet.
i wonder if part of it is because there wasn’t much video on the rookies their first times up and eventually teams were able to get footage of them and study them better.

6-4 is a pretty good road trip

Did anyone hear the last three or four callers on Biggsy's show today?
Jerry from Buena Park stated that if the Angels re-signed Vladdy he would boycott the show and not call in as long as Vladdy is on the team.
That call was immediately followed by a woman named Lynn who is my new hero. After pointing out that Bell and SOS are just not ready for the major leagues yet and it’s unfair to expect the same level of performance from them as from Weaver and Lackey, she went on to say that in light of Jerry’s threat the Angels should do everything possible to re-sign Vladdy.
The next caller after that applauded everything Lynn had said, especially if signing Vladdy would get rid of Jerry, and joked that he’d take up a collection at the next game.
opiejeanne - August 23, 2009
What did Figgins do to deserve to be on this list?
I ask because I could only listen to it on the radio, and not the whole game; I missed some big chunks of the game.
opiejeanne - August 23, 2009
1-5
Figgi4life - August 24, 2009 via mobile
Tough one!
Looks like Bell and SOS are not ready yet. Hopefully Joe can bounce back and show signs of last year’s all star performance. Coming home should be a good thing and we have to play good ball to beat a decent Detroit team. Go Halos!
