Final Score in 13 Innings in Baltimore: Angels 17, Orioles 8
After a month+ on the disabled list Angels All Star Centerfielder Torii Hunter returned to the lineup and had a clutch base hit in the top of the 13th inning to open the scoring floodgates for the Angels on Sunday afternoon after their starting pitching and reliable relievers had allowed the Orioles back into the game on three separate occasions.
(Try to write a better run on sentence than that without cutting and pasting a Steve Physioc mid-at-bat anecdote of a game other than the one he is being paid to describe)
Angels starter Sean O'Sullivan blew a 4-run lead and had to be relieved by Matt Palmer with nobody out and 2 runs across in the 6th inning. Darren Oliver pitched 1.1 scoreless to take the Angels and a two run lead into the 8th.
Palmer was in line for his 10th win of the season but Kevin Jepsen let one run come in during the 8th and Brian Fuentes let another one in during the 9th inning for his 5th Blown Save of the season. One of the outs Fuentes recorded was an Adam Jones bomb to the warning track caught by Juan Rivera to score the tying run as a sac fly, but, well, it was scary.
In extra innings, though, the Halo arms got serious. Jose Arredondo pitched 2 scoreless frames of 2 hit, 2K ball and Jason Bulger tossed the 12th and 13th for the Win.
Chone Figgins went 4 for 7 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Erick Aybar scored 2 and had 3 RBIs as well in a 3 for 6 afternoon effort. The Angels loaded the bases at will in extra innings only to see each effort end in a disheartening double play, but finally they broke thru.
In addition to being responsible for creating 6 runs in the game, Figgy had the 1,000th hit of his career in the game. He is only the 7th Angel with at least that many hits. Vladimir Guerrero has 987 so, expect another party by the end of the week. Guerrero had Sunday off.
The other six Angels with more than 1,000 hits under the Halo are: Garret Anderson (2368), Tim Salmon (1674), Brian Downing (1588), Darin Erstad (1505), Jim Fregosi (1408) and Bobby Grich (1102).

But Steve Klauke, radio voice of the Bees mentioned on the air the other night that when Howie first came up, he always introduced himself as “Howard.” Klauke also said that Howie answers to either. Sounds like he does prefer Howard. That’s too formal, I keep calling him Howie.

thanks for that tidbit. I had to start wondering why teams’ announcers and mlb.com always referred to him as Howard even though the Angels and us fans mostly know him as Howie. it must be that way in the media guide (can anyone confirm?), but I’m not surprised if most with the Angels are too accustomed calling him Howie.
I’m like you and just call him Howard just as a nickname / goof. otherwise just Howie.

thanks to fuentes, we got to watch an extra… what… 90 minutes of angels baseball? bulger did great! give him a few more closing roles to give him some more confidence and fuentes can go on the DL with a phantom injury right before the postseason

Without his play in the first, game never goes to 13 innings. He had a nice day at the plate too. But then again, the game went on so long people might have forgotten Aybar’s play or thought it happened yesterday.

But Bulger was pure balls as well. He struck out 5 in 2 innings. So was Arredondo. All of a sudden our bullpen is looking a lot better.
But Figgy got his 1000th hit, all for the Angels, stole third base, doubled twice. And for sentimental reasons I voted Desmond

every single team in major league baseball, save the Yankees, would have to pass on him first. In terms of waiver claims, priority goes from worst record to first in-league (i.e., NL), then worst to first in the other league. Only the Yankees have a better record than the Angels; ergo, every NL team would have to pass, and then every AL team with a record worse than the Angels. Texas and Boston wouldn’t allow him to get to the Angels.

Reminds me of a few years ago…I had a Christian friend (and a generally pragmatic guy) that told me – and he was serious – that one of the symbols of the “diabolical” nature of New York was the names of their hockey teams. I said, OK, I…uh…sort of make the connection to the New Jersey Devils. What’s wrong with the Islanders and the Rangers?
The answer? If you take the first letter off of their names, you get the Angers and the Slanders…and in fact if you take the first letter of of the Devils, you get the Evils.
So I guess the dark forces work through…the modified names of hockey teams?

I was impressed by Rivera, and Palmer, also.
Rivera’s LOW slide to elude the tag at home was priceless. Later, the 3-run blast.
Palmer calmed things down nicely during his time on the field.
Total team effort……….I can’t get enough of this game.
I’m a little dissappointed in Fuentes in this one.

It would be nice if our pitching doesn't give up a 9 spot.
The only SP I have confidence in now is Lackey (Santana looked amazing last start, but his consistency worries me).
It’s nice throwing up 17 runs against a borderline 5th starter but this isn’t likely going to happen in the postseason.
