…the “How’s your wife and my kids?”, “Wife’s great, kids are retarded” piece is reportedly a real exchange from a cricket test match between England and Australia, with Rod Marsh and Sir Ian Botham being the players involved.
Marsh retired from cricket in ’84 so it would predate the movie by at least 5 years.
There's a long and glorious tradition of 'sledging' (as we call it) in cricket...
Two of my favourites:
Glenn McGrath (legendary Aussie fast bowler) to Eddo Brandes (rotund Zimbabwean batsman)
“oi Eddo, why are you so f___ing fat?”
“Because every time I f**k your wife she gives me a biscuit”
Merv Hughes (Aussie bowler) to Viv Richards after he’d swung and missed a few times in a row – “It’s the small, round red thing, weighst about 5 1/2 ounces, you’re supposed to hit it”. Richards smacked the next ball straight over the bowler’s head – “you know what it looks like, now go and fetch it”
And the reason it’s called ‘Sledging’… it came from the mid-sixties and a guy called Graham Calling, who used to open the bowling for New South Wales and Australia… apparently the suggestion was that this guy’s wife was having an affair with another team-mate, and when he came into bat the entire fielding team started singing When a Man Loves A Woman, the old Percy Sledge number
If so, I’m pissed. I sat here for over an hour, looking at the game photos, trying to think of a theme. It wasn’t until my wife got up and suggested Major League.
A 3 pager
Nice. Keep up the good work with these.

Steal the best
and claim total credit — a very internet move. ’89 predates the WWW as well, Yanks are so ahead of the curve.

Classic stories
The McGrath-Brandes exchange is hilarious — never heard that before.
On a side note, my old lady never seemed to mind me watching cricket whenever Glenn McGrath was bowling, for some reason…

Good one!
As I sat watching the game last night, somehow I knew today’s installment would involve “Major League.” I guess I know how you think.
OCAngelfan - July 29, 2009
Haha, and you weren't even in the gameday thread?
AlanFalcon - July 29, 2009
Was it mentioned in the thread?

And then she gave me the “Duh-face”.

Didn't need to be in the thread...
….I guess it was obvious to both your wives…haha.
