Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Angels 6, Twins 3
John Lackey had one bump in the road, Joe Mauer, and the bump hit him twice for solo HRs, but Lackey's Angels picked him up with a solo HR by Jeff Mathis, a 2-Run HR by Robb Quinlan and a 3-Run HR when it mattered most by Mike Napoli. Twins starter Francisco Liriano got touched up by the Halos in the loss and Lackey earned his 97th regular season victory in an Angels uniform. It was the Angels' 7th win in a row. The team is 15-5 in July and have only lost once since the All-Star Break.

Rookie Kevin Jepsen came in to relieve Lackey and face Mauer in the 8th inning with a man on and induced a ground out to Chone Figgins at 3B. Jepsen surrendered a run on two singles in the 9th inning but the game really wasn't even that close. On a night where Quinlan and Mathis homered, as well as Howie Kendrick 3 hits, you wouldn't really figure the opponent stood a chance.
The Twins, close in the AL Central, looked gassed, suffering from last night's dizzying blown save by the heretofore untouchable Joe Nathan as well as visions of the Central Division leader White Sox enjoying a perfect game hours before their miserable defeat. But this team swept the Angels in their Hankiedome in April so it is not a minor league free pass facing All Stars like Mauer, Justin Morneau and the ghost of Kirby Puckett, who was obviously hanging with some ghost girls at Disneyland or somewhere else.

mike wuertz anyone?
Beane said he expects that the A’s will continue to be active before Friday’s trade deadline, and an American League source told The Chronicle the Angels were preparing to make a strong bid for reliever Michael Wuertz, potentially offering infielder Sean Rodriguez among others. However, it’s not clear if Beane would trade a player with two more years under team control to a division rival.
Minnesota has interest in shortstop Orlando Cabrera, but sending him to the Twins seems unlikely to happen. The Twins don’t appear to have the kind of prospects the A’s are looking for.

Wuertz will be 31 in the off-season, S-Rod would haunt us for seasons
Yet, Wuertz is certainly having a good year with a WHIP of 0.99

Billy … just for fun!
Rev Halofan - July 24, 2009
Wuertz is having an amazing year
Excellent K/9 rate of 11.85 and a FIP of 2.10. If this is his real ability and he can actually sustain this kind of perfomance for the next three months, then the Angels should definitely try to acquire him.
Fan Since 1981 - July 24, 2009
what would you give up?
since he has 2 cost controlled seasons left

more on wuertz
Interest building in A’s Wuertz … Duchscherer, too?
The A’s are reluctant to trade right-hander Michael Wuertz, but the interest in the reliever is so intense that the club ultimately might get the return it desires.
A number of clubs are expected to watch right-hander Justin Duchscherer pitch on a rehabilitation assignment Sunday. Duchscherer is recovering from elbow surgery.

Dear Rangers Fans
Stop Whining
Sincerely,
all of us
(actually…keep it up, it’s kinda funny)
Moondoggy - July 24, 2009
us Rangers fans have perfected the art of whining.
Believe me. It’s not gonna stop anytime soon.
JimCrankshaft - July 24, 2009
Your team is the one exceeding preseason expectations...
nothing to whine about this year, unless you lose out from here.
Downing Rules - July 24, 2009
you're absolutely right.
but unfortunately I think it’s become an unbreakable habit for some Rangers fans.

Think A's & Angels in the second half of 2002
The more both of us win, the better chance one wins the World Series!

I'm flying in from NY for those games
been “lucky” on those trips this season so far: 4/10-12 vs. Boston; 6/12-14 vs. SD; 7/10-12 vs. NY. 8-1 so far. Maybe the streak continues (just so the LSB bloggers can bemoan our “luck”).
Moondoggy - July 24, 2009
Not all of us think your success is due to luck.
I happen to think your just a damn good team. I’m just hoping you guys don’t pull away from us. I want a pennant chase. Some exciting baseball in September would be a welcomed change for a lifelong baseball fanatic like myself.
Enjoy your stay in Texas.

JimCrankshaft - July 24, 2009
Well said, sir
…I, for one, would love to see it go down to the wire – teams need to go to the play-offs battle-hardened, not resting on their laurels.
The Limey - July 25, 2009
Indeed
and if both teams keep this up…who knows? Maybe both the Rangers and the Angels will make the playoffs, keeping either the Yankees or the Red Sox at home come October.
A redneck can dream, right?

I think that's a dream we can all share...
…anything that keeps Boston at home works for me.
The Limey - July 25, 2009
I'm hoping for I don't know Tampa or Toronto to take the East
Anyone to take the Central. The Angels the West and the Rangers the WC. I’d love to see both NY and Bashtin out of the playoffs. We can all dream.

I agree except for the AL Central...

I’ve always been fond of the name as well. I was pretty disappointed when they decided to change the name to Ameriquest Field. Luckily, Ameriquest croaked and we got our preferred nomenclature back.

There's a similar story in "What About Bob?" (Bill Murray)
The doctor draws two circles and says “What do you see?”
The guy says “Sex.”
So the doctor draws trees, “What do you see?”
The guy says “sex”.
The doctor draws a car, owl, “Sex, sex, sex”.
The doctor says to him “You are obsessed with sex”, and he replies “Well you’re the one drawing all the dirty pictures!”

…making that Free Agent dash we all hoped for…
K3YEROUT - July 24, 2009
Great way to enjoy my birthday
Excellent fireworks show afterwards, like always… I still contend it was just for me as a birthday present.
Lackey’s the panther of the game. Mauer’s the only guy that hurt him, and Lackey looked flawless.
The Angels look absolutely unbeatable. They figured out how to dominate from the get-go.
We might never lose again!!
