Final Score in Oakland: Angels 1, Athletics 0
In televised post-game comments to Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc, Angels slugger Bobby Abreu told them "John Lackey owned the mound today." Lackey matched Oakland's Brett Anderson with 0 runs but Anderson had a perfect game going for 6 and 2/3 innings before Abreu singled. Anderson extracted his revenge with an immediate pickoff, but in the 10th, Abreu struck a solo shot to make all the difference in a tight Ace/Closer tandem pitching duel
And Lackey did own the mound, allowing just 3 hits in 9 innings pitched. Abreu hit a solo shot off of A's All Star closer Andrew Bailey and Brian Fuentes nailed down his 28th save of the season.

At 52-38 after 90 games, the Angels own the 4th best record in all of baseball. Considering their 6-11 start, they have the best record in the MLB after the first two weeks of the season. Meanwhile, Oakland looks terrible, Brett Anderson's 7 innings of 2-hit ball notwithstanding. The usually-reliable Baley showed his youthful inexperience when he served up a middle-inside fastball to the still powerful Bobby Abreu.
It was Abreu's 248th career homerun, moving him into a tie with Goose Goslin and Ted Simmons for 196th place all time in baseball history. Ha ha ha, there is a factoid for ya Fizzy! Angelswin!

Bobby "come through" Abreu
Funke5ive - July 19, 2009
also broke up the no-hitter
such a baller
princeton11loveshalos - July 19, 2009
had to go with Lackey because Abreu would of never had the chance without John's performance

that's a tough vote
Bobby gets the HR
Lackey 9 shutout innings
I’m going with Lackey – he’s on my fantasy team.
angelsfan777 - July 19, 2009
9 innings of shutout pitching'll win every time.
TheOptimist - July 19, 2009

deejayelleseven - July 19, 2009
most of the time 5 runs in 6 IP
will get a Panther on this site. But I agree, for this case, it’s Lackey. Although I voted Bobby for kicks.

that fight would've been more epic
with Napoli involved. he’d probably be hitting Kendall from the other side….
but great pic either way

tcberry - July 19, 2009
panther 3 wood......
he’s like an automatic win when he’s in the lineup.
Even when he doesnt do anything
norcaliangelsfan - July 19, 2009
Nice to see Howie get that double today.
Hopefully he builds off of that.
deejayelleseven - July 19, 2009
This is from earlier in the season, but I forgot to post it then.
Zu Long - July 19, 2009
NICE.
TheOptimist - July 19, 2009
Kendrick hit a home run?!
JoseGuillenSux - July 20, 2009
Tough call.
I voted Lack, but if Abreu doesn’t hit that HR, Lack keeps pitching, and eventually Speier comes in.
moosemastr - July 19, 2009
I voted for Lackey
Pitched a gem, with a seamless transition to Fuentes. Of course, Bobby did break up the no-no with the game winning HR…..shit, maybe I voted for the wrong player.
halofolife - July 19, 2009
Abreu actually broke up the no-no with a single
In the 7th, I think.
moosemastr - July 19, 2009
Yeah
I meant to say “broke up the no-no, THEN hit the game winning HR”
halofolife - July 19, 2009
Ah
My apologies, sir.
moosemastr - July 19, 2009
No worries moosemastr
I’ve already drank a sixer, just glad I can still type.

hbhalofan - July 19, 2009
hilarious
linkbruin - July 19, 2009
Awesome victory today.
This sets a new # of games above .500…14 now. Believe it or not, we are only 1 1/2 games behind the Yanks, and 21/2 games behind Boston for best record in the AL.
Plus, Seattle next plays Detroit, and Boston plays Texas. Since we play KC, we have a chance to gain more ground in the division.
sothball - July 19, 2009
Unless we get swept by KC...
as we’ve been known to do from time to time.
tcberry - July 19, 2009
RAWR!
Just woke up to see this awesomeness. Going back to sleep now, sweet dreams, Abreu swinging the bat, Fuentesaurus with the RAWR

sothball - July 19, 2009
What DirecTV channel is the game on?
halofolife - July 19, 2009
If this was meant for TX-Minn, not sure...
…I don’t have DirecTV.
sothball - July 19, 2009
...and Kinsler just won it with a 2 run HR...
sothball - July 19, 2009
Yeah, I couldn't find the TX-Twins game anywhere
And I have MLB extra innings, figured somebody else had DirecTV too. Sucks that texas won.
halofolife - July 19, 2009
Kinsler with the walkoff........
Texas wins……
