Ervin Santana still has some magic in his arm - Los Angeles Times
The most encouraging aspect of the Angels' 6-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday might be this: Santana dominated, without last year's fastball.
Angels roll past A's for fourth-straight victory - FOX Sports on MSN
Santana showed that he's back on track and ended a three-start losing streak, Kendry Morales hit a two-run homer and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Thursday night for their fourth straight win.
Team Reports - CBSSports.com
RHP Ervin Santana, with his eight-inning outing Thursday, ran his career record to 10-1 with a 1.35 ERA in 15 career appearances against the A's (including a 5-0 mark in Oakland). A's batters have hit just .190 against Santana over his 100 1/3 innings against them.
Okay, maybe we should wait until Santana pitches against a major league team before getting too excited.

All-Star experience 'sours' Angels' Brian Fuentes - Los Angeles Times
He says he was promised he would pitch the sixth inning, until he was bumped by the commissioner.
Bud Selig. Enough said.
More Team Reports - CBSSports.com
C Mike Napoli was 3-for-4 in Thursday's victory. It was Napoli's seventh three-hit game this season. Napoli is batting .391 (25-for-64) over his past 21 games.

Three-team playoff race in each division in American League - USATODAY.com

The Glaus Question - FanGraphs Baseball
The Cardinals have a question to answer. What in the world are they going to do with Troy Glaus? The big slugger is a week into a twenty day rehab assignment in the minors and should be cleared to play by August.

It is unfortunate that Fuentes got bumped after he was told he would pitch, but I don’t think its out of line to want the starters to pitch two innings.
Eric Stephen - July 17, 2009
maybe not, but shouldn't that be determined by the Manager
and not some bureaucrat who has already made the All-star game a complete joke?
WanderingWanderer - July 17, 2009
This is where we are now
As if Selig hadn’t already screwed up baseball beyond repair…now he’s dictating who pitches and how long in the All-Star Game? Holy crap. What a meddler. He just doesn’t know when to leave things alone. Except for the steroid issue. That was left alone too long.
This guy is such a joke.
hk47 - July 17, 2009
it's just laughable because its so absurd
I can hardly believe it, except I can
hk47 - July 17, 2009
Yeah
I agree with that part…it does seem weird that Selig would get involved. I was just thinking more about the thought of the starter going two innings.
Eric Stephen - July 17, 2009
in that case, they should have let the Tim Lincecum pitch 3 innings...
so the NL didnt have Billingsley blow it for them. Nice Brooklyn Landgrabber beanie chump.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - July 17, 2009
Way to stick to the issue at hand, and avoid the attacks. Very mature.
Eric Stephen - July 17, 2009
Please point out this alleged attack.
Rev Halofan - July 17, 2009
although to be fair to Eric
Billingsley giving up a tying run in the 5th inning, did not “blow the game” for the NL. In all fairness, the AL won the game fair and square.
hk47 - July 17, 2009
great catch by Crawford
one of three hundred Rays players in the game. Felt like I was watching Tampa Bay play the National League.

Looks accurate to my biased eyes!
Rev Halofan - July 17, 2009
I think Eric thought it was directed at him.
But I could be wrong.

Touche :)
Eric Stephen - July 17, 2009
Bud Selig
f*ck you.
JoseGuillenSux - July 17, 2009
Well
Thank goodness the ASG counts. What a crock.
Slasher52 - July 17, 2009
Not to mention...
There’s a tremendous conflict of interest here, with Selig implementing a rule that is foolhardy enough; (that the ASG determines HF advantage) and then to dictate the pitchers and for how long they pitch? How is this not the biggest conflict of interest in sports?
We all agree that the ASG determining HF is a crock. Is Bud Selig THAT insecure in that he thinks there is a remote possibility of another ASG time, so he’s going to dictate the starters go two innings to alleviate that possibility? I’m incredulous. Apparently he is!
hk47 - July 17, 2009
* tie not time
hk47 - July 17, 2009
Did the fans really care that the game ended as a tie?
opiejeanne - July 17, 2009
everyone who loves to whine
finally had an unimpeachable platform. I finally sided with Bud Selig out of sheer contrarian contempt for the mob mentality.
Rev Halofan - July 17, 2009
This fan did!
rspencer - July 17, 2009
My point is so much about the ASG tie a few years ago
It’s about the conflict of interest with the Commissioner calling the shots in an exhibition game that determines home field in the World Series.
And I think people cared about the tie from the standpoint that it wasn’t a soccer game or a hockey game so it shouldn’t end in a tie. Baseball games don’t end in ties.
hk47 - July 17, 2009
*isn't so much
hk47 - July 17, 2009
We should do like soccer does. Settle things in the 13th inning with another Home Run Derby!
Stirrups - July 17, 2009
or like the Israeli Baseball League
HR DERBY!
anaheim angels - July 17, 2009
I understand that
but wasn’t the tie before the ASG determined home field in the WS? Didn’t that come later?
I have to admit that I didn’t usually bother to watch the ASG before then, because it was too much like watching the Yankees: an expensive group of players imitating a team.
opiejeanne - July 17, 2009
excellent point
What is to stop him from now telling the home plate umpire “Since this is only Game One of the 2004 ALDS, why not squeeze Bartolo Colon to make this game more interesting…”
Rev Halofan - July 17, 2009
exactly Rev, it's a huge conflict of interest like I say
And that’s why you can’t trust Selig. Most people think he’s a weasel. And that’s how baseball ended up where it is today.
hk47 - July 17, 2009
Roger that!

Interesting commentary in the Halladay article
Re: the relative sparse condition of the Angels farm system. Hmm… don’t know what to think of that.
Although if all it takes is Wood (and I love Brandon) and a Sean O’Sullivan and S-Rod… or even substitute Saunders for O’Sullivan…if I’m LAA, I am all in with that offer.
hk47 - July 17, 2009
Wood vs. Glaus
I’m assuming this is Glaus without the ’roids?
neochoa - July 17, 2009
and about 40 more iq points
based on my casual conversations with both of them.
Rev Halofan - July 17, 2009
MLB will never be quite right
until they get rid of Selig and install a real commissioner. For you young’uns out there, that would be a commissioner independent of the owners who strives to make decisions with the welfare of the game in mind, irrespective of the blowback.
rspencer - July 17, 2009
Not waiting around for that to happen.
Not in the contemporary legal climate. NFL gets away with that because they do not have an anti-trust exemption to protect, and they have a very weak players’ union. The NBA gets away with that because they also do not have an anti-trust exemption to protect, and they are a players league.
Baseball has an anti-trust exemption that they worry too much about, and they have a players’ union that might as well be The Fortress Of Solitude, AND they have an overly concrete legacy of the owners running the roost. Too many conflicting areas of interest for anyone sitting in the center to do what may be right for the enterprise, but come at the expense of one or more of the parties.
Stirrups - July 17, 2009
I think you're right about that. All of it.
