no Oakland As either
granted, there was only one, Andew Bailey. AL WEST bias anyone?
anaheim angels - July 14, 2009
the Rangers played half the effing game!
howiestheman - July 14, 2009
but we got to see
Josh Hamilton botch a throw to 3B, show off his .243 average and get on base once to force a Michael Young Double Play.
Rev Halofan - July 14, 2009
If T Hunter was going to sit on the bench...
then he should have made the trip to St L.
805halo - July 14, 2009
2 Mariners got in the game and 2 Rangers.
4 AL WEST players played. There were 6 Red Sox voted in and 5 Rays
anaheim angels - July 14, 2009
East Coast Bias
deejayelleseven - July 14, 2009
Yeah, but the difference is that the A's and Pirates suck balls.
How the hell does a first place team not get a single player in the game? I mean really, what the hell?
Zu Long - July 14, 2009
Great Win...
I guess our Halos are not good enough to play in All Star game.
Fuck ’em all…
We are in first place. Thanks to the rest of fellas of the AL guaranteeing us in home field in the World Series.
cupie - July 14, 2009
good point
we can say it as GIVEN to us. HEH HEH HEH!
Rev Halofan - July 14, 2009
Joe Maddon should be fired.
PERIOD
Figgi4life - July 14, 2009
I love Carl,
But he doesn’t deserve it because of his manager.
Figgi4life - July 14, 2009
This is so infuriating and depressing at the same time.
After all of the shit we went through this year, we don’t even get a break and see two of our players in action in the Midsummer Classic.
We get no respect. If we win the WS, people will act like it never happened. F*** them all.
And the Rangers? F***ing overrated asshats.
Maddon, you’re dead to me.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
Skanks Phils and Sux too.
F*** them all.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
I'm still voting.
Is that bad?
Figgi4life - July 14, 2009
No, shove in their faces that a player that didnt play wins MVP.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
LINK?
ladybug - July 14, 2009
It's on MLB.com
27up27down - July 14, 2009
can't do it anymore.....
Figgi4life - July 14, 2009
I just kept it up from before it was announced, and it still counts.
Figgi4life - July 14, 2009
Joe maddon...
phuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu(sigh)uuuuuuuuuuuuuck you
JoseGuillenSux - July 14, 2009
So they say this is the shortest All Star game time-wise
So why did it go half an hour over on DirecTV’s guide? And don’t use the excuse that it didn’t start until almost 6, they knew about all that shit.
My recorder stopped at 8.
thrill000 - July 14, 2009
This truly was disrespectful
To the Halos and us fans.
halofolife - July 14, 2009
True dat.
In turn, we should show no respect to any other baseball club in this country.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
i already don't
trojanangelfan - July 14, 2009
Additionally, it was disrespectful to all the teams that didn't get to see their All-Star play.
Just to showcase the Skanks and Sux. Outrageous.
I feel for the A’s too.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
And the Pirates.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
Yeah
The Bucs, A’s and Halos got PHUCKED!!!
halofolife - July 14, 2009
See above.
If you’re a crappy last place team, having your crappy forced All-Star picks not appear in the game is part of the package. How the hell does a first place team not have a single guy show up?
Zu Long - July 14, 2009
I wanted to see figgins backflip damn it
and now Joe maddon took that away from me…:’(
JoseGuillenSux - July 14, 2009
i know
I was almost more excited for that then him playing
Figgi4life - July 14, 2009
Random backflips

JoseGuillenSux - July 14, 2009
Who's that?
Carl Everetts Godfather?
halofolife - July 14, 2009
Can we invite no Skanks, BoSox, Phils, and Rays next year?
linkbruin - July 14, 2009
Invite them
Just bar them from playing and show no regret when those damn fans complain.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
You also need to mandate that the broadcast booth not speak of them, either.
Stirrups - July 14, 2009
Maddon.
Don’t listen to what they say. Spiked blonde hair and black rimmed glasses are a good look on a senior citizen.
clover_black - July 14, 2009
EVERYONE!!!!!
There is an upcoming series against the Rays
How about we go there and boo everything???
I’m already going. There is a day game on the Wednesday, if that changes anything.

Epic Dean - July 14, 2009
I hope Angel fans have the intelligence to unmercifully boo
Joe Madden next time the Rays come to town.
thrill000 - July 14, 2009
No big deal!
Scioscia will be managing the AL team at our field next year so it’s all good.

princeton11loveshalos - July 14, 2009
Freaking Waste of my time.
deejayelleseven - July 14, 2009

maybe then Maddon would have played them.
princeton11loveshalos - July 14, 2009
BTW
No cubs played

that sucks for cubs fans

Figgi4life - July 14, 2009

Halofan4ever - July 14, 2009
At least
Beckett and Wakefield didnt get to play either.
Kartane - July 14, 2009
True, but
Bay, Papelbon and Youkilis did. I wouldn’t be upset about Figgins and Fuentes not getting into the game if 3 other Angels did play.
sunsetsonfire - July 14, 2009
I don't mind Youkilis or Bay
but I am irrationally pissed that Papelbon was the winning pitcher.
opiejeanne - July 14, 2009
The AL won which means the league has home field advantage in WS, that is all that matters
tanana40 - July 14, 2009
meh.......
What EVAH
norcaliangelsfan - July 14, 2009
See...Joe Maddon hates Scioscia!
Joe Maddon sucks. He fully stroked his east coast future bosses. Looked like a job interview to me.
Monkeyspanked - July 14, 2009
RIDICULOUS!
Torii Hunter, Jered Weaver, and Chone Figgins are obvious All-Stars, no matter who got voted in. We had to work through more trauma than any other team in the bigs this season and we will prove that we are the best. The ANGELS will go all the way!
boardincalibabi - July 14, 2009
Well, this game was about Albert Pujols and 65 other random players
clover_black - July 14, 2009
Thoughts
Personally, my belief is that every team should be represented in the box score. In other words, if your team has one representative, he should play. If they have three representatives, at least one should play. You get the idea. In that sense, I think Maddon really dropped the ball.
On the other hand, I think in the all star context, both Angels reps were considered specialists. In a game that “counts”, Fuentes was going to be a LOOGY, and Figgins was probably not going to see action unless the AL needed a pinch runner. Objectively speaking, if you’re managing a game to win with those lineups, that’s probably the reality. I can’t fault Maddon for taking that view.
I think Figgins suffered from the fact that he was the last addition. You knew Inge, “selected” by fans, was going to see action before Chone. Still, it sucks to sit through that whole game and not see one Angel. I guess a team leading its division doesn’t have anyone good enough to play in an All Star game.
LA Seitz - July 14, 2009
howard as a lefty would have been perfect for Fuentes to pitch to
anaheim angels - July 14, 2009
Good point
LA Seitz - July 14, 2009
I'm kinda suprised Figgins didn't lead off the 9th over Inge....
Since his OBP is 33 points higher. He’d be a better bet for that last insurance run yes? They even play the same position so what gives?
Nashdiesel - July 14, 2009
even McCarver said it would have been a good matchup...
joe maddon is a lazy SOB…
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - July 14, 2009
Most of the "good will" of the ASG...
…disappeared 7 years ago when they decided “the game matters” (towards determining home field advantage for the world series). So did management strategy.
It went from a “fun” event to one where winning became more important. I really didn’t understand the outrage of a tied all-star game…too late now though. Those complaining helped foster the change that “gives the game some meaning”.
sothball - July 14, 2009
One thing I always wondered...
After the infamous “tie game” from a few years back where the managers were trying to get everyone into the game, I wondered why didn’t they just come up with a special All Star game rule that allowed managers to bring back players who played briefly earlier in the game should the game go into extra innings? What’s the big deal of bringing back a pitcher who threw only two thirds of an inning earlier or a batter who pinch hit or ran? That gives the manager the wiggle room to try to get all teams represented in the game without running the risk of running out of players should it be a marathon. Just my own opinion. And, no, I wouldn’t want this to be a rule that carried into the “real” games. The All Star game only.
sunsetsonfire - July 14, 2009
With all due respect, Sothball
Your view reflects a relatively short time frame, maybe 30 years back at most. One of the motivations behind giving the outcome of the ASG a concrete (if small) meaning was to return the event to an earlier time last seen in the mid-Seventies, when winning the game was indeed considered important by the players.
I agree that things did change in 2003 when they made the outcome of the game count. Throughout the Eighties and Nineties, the emphasis was on getting everyone in the game, to the detriment of game strategy. The managers’ hands were forced by MLB in this regard. That is what led to the embarrassment of the 2002 tie, because Selig was too much of a coward to make the executive decision to allow the managers to bring back players already used and taken out for that game only. Starting in ’03, managers were instructed to keep sufficient players in reserve to ensure a definite outcome, and I suppose this gives Maddon an excuse for not using Fuentes, at least, considering the closeness of the score.
Having said that, he should have at least played Figgy in the field the last half-inning, and as far as I am concerned there is no excuse for his not having done that.
rspencer - July 14, 2009
I don't believe we disagree.
You are right…my view was limited to a roughly 30 year time period.
FWIW, I really didn’t understand the outrage over a tied score in 2002, especially in light of the WTC attack 10 months prior. Perspective anyone?
I liked it more when it was a game with no particular significance. Oh well…the world gets changed more by the “outraged” than by the “generally content and happy”.
sothball - July 15, 2009
F Joe Maddon
I thought Maddon would have more class and respect. Unless Scioscia asked him to give our guys a rest, then I think Maddon should be an enemy of the Angels Army. Why wasn’t Jared selected over the KC pitcher.
805halo - July 14, 2009
If Scioscia made that request, the team should have 'leaked' that preference to the fans.
Stirrups - July 14, 2009
But if Fuentes was warming up...
doesnt that mean Scioscia didnt tell Joe anything??
JoseGuillenSux - July 14, 2009
True dat.
Stirrups - July 14, 2009
he could have said "use only if necessary"
and the goal is still to win the game.
norcaliangelsfan - July 14, 2009
While Jered deserved to be an All-Star, Zach Greinke deserved it also, the guy is a stud
tanana40 - July 14, 2009

Whoa President Obama last time did the first pitch in game 2 of the 2005 ALCS..
interesting….
JoseGuillenSux - July 14, 2009
It's all his fault!
Clutch - July 14, 2009
I, too, was upset that Figgins didn't play
But then, right after the game was over, I saw him on the field, high-fiving his teammates and, even though he was only on the screen for a split second, he had the biggest smile on his face.
Sure, he was probably a little disappointed to not play, but I think he had the time of his life. And, considering that he wasn’t anywhere close to St. Louis 12 hours ago, I’m pretty happy for him regardless.
ZiK - July 14, 2009
Figgy was smiling...
because he was thinking about next year when he gets voted in unanimously by the fans and gets to play in the ASG on his home turf! Sweet!
3rd Echelon - July 14, 2009
or about the chance that he'll get to kick joe maddon in the balls
JoseGuillenSux - July 15, 2009
According to the All Star Game Blog in espn:
“AL manager Joe Maddon said he planned to hold back his two most versatile position players — Ben Zobrist and Chone Figgins — because they play so many different positions and would give him more maneuverability late in the game.”
Oh well!

Were there any Rays that didn't play?
WTF Joe?!!
805halo - July 14, 2009
Pena didn't
But still, WTF JOE!??
27up27down - July 14, 2009
Pena not in the ASG, but...
… he did get a chance to show his stuff in the Homerun Derby. All the Angels got was pre-game intros and a brief warm up in the pen for Fuentes… who only leads the AL in saves. That’s all.
sunsetsonfire - July 14, 2009

Better not be a repeat at the 2010 game
The Angels are hosting. Does that mean anything? Apparently it didn’t the last time the game was in Anaheim. Remember? I don’t recall the year. All I remember is that the Angels only had one.. ONE… representative… Chuck Finley. And Tony LaRussa decided not to give the home town it’s one thrill. He sat him and kept him as the “extra inning reserve”. Of course, he couldn’t do that with one of HIS pitchers. Like Madden, he managed to get all his own guys into the game.
sunsetsonfire - July 14, 2009
not Pena..........
norcaliangelsfan - July 14, 2009

True.
Forgot about him. Then again, Pena DID get his spotlight at the Derby.

mastermind565 - July 14, 2009
They had two
Finley and Devon White. White got an at bat.
box score
LA Seitz - July 14, 2009
I stand corrected
For some reason my tiny little memory had Devon playing for Toronto at that time, but it wasn’t for a couple more years that White was a Blue Jay, so I stand corrected. Still, it would have been nice to get more than one Angel into the home park game. The bright part of that night was Nolan Ryan getting the win (my all time favorite player).
sunsetsonfire - July 14, 2009
I added a fan post to the Rays SB Nation site about "Clueless Joe"

27up27down - July 14, 2009
Grow some balls
base balls
805halo - July 14, 2009
No can do.
I’d rather show dignity and respect for a team that sold us out. It’s a little something called maturity. :)
27up27down - July 14, 2009
It is called passion
Angels need to stand up and stick together. I am not a Red Sox or Yankees fan, but man they LOVE their teams and I respect that. Remember the guy who buried the Red Sox jersey in the new Yankee stadium foundation. That is passion! There is nothing wrong with standing up for our guys. They deserved to play and Maddon needs to hear it. If you want to sit back and hope that our guys play next year, then that is your choice and I won’t criticize you, but I want to support Figgie and Fuentes tonight! Go Angels!!!
805halo - July 14, 2009
Support them by voting for them.
Or by going to games. Not by crashing other people’s space.
Zu Long - July 14, 2009
Rest assured that I voted and attended Angels games
805halo - July 14, 2009
There's a difference between being passionate and being a jerk.
We stick together on our own turf. We aren’t a gang, going over to some other gang’s turf to prove how much we love our team. That kind of behavior just brings those losers back over here.
opiejeanne - July 14, 2009
In 805's defense
I do understand how infuriating our perceived lack of passion can be. How many of us have lamented the fact that fans of the skanks, doyers and sux are quite a bit more loud and boisterous at the Big A than most Angel fans. The last Angel doyer game I went to, I was surrounded by Halo fans that would do little more than mildly clap, while doyer fans were cheering every foul tip and every defensive play (no matter how routine ), while I wouldn’t go to DRays bay to talk smack about Madden, you gotta respect 805’s passion. Now i’m not calling anyone out or claiming that were not passionate Halo fans, we all are obviously the exception to average Angel fans.
halofolife - July 14, 2009
Looks like 805 got banned from DRB.

One more thing
I am not advocating or supporting belligerent fans or starting a cross blog argument. Hope it didn’t come off like that.
halofolife - July 14, 2009
No, I actually removed the post on my own out of respect to the Angels
805halo - July 14, 2009
805
BTW, wasn’t implying YOU are a belligerent fan, I was actually thinking of doyer, sux and skank fans.
halofolife - July 14, 2009
"No, I actually removed the post on my own out of respect".
fixed
Funke5ive - July 16, 2009
Yes, I understand that frustration.
I am almost always hoarse after a baseball game, even if I’m sitting near Yankees or Redsox fans. I have been known to give them the evil eye if they dare to boo one of our players. Funny how well that works these days.
opiejeanne - July 15, 2009
I was hoarse for 3 days
After that last doyer vs. Angel game. Luckily we won, on Juan’s go ahead homer. But I swear, some of the Halo faithful were pissing me off, but like I said, hooliganism and belligerence isn’t cool.
halofolife - July 15, 2009
In 1979 we bought our first season tickets
in partnership with two other couples.
The people in neighboring seats brought their sandwiches and martinis (I think those were martinis in the thermos) in cute little cooler bags. They were genteel, clapped politely if their hands were free, etc. That was the tone of the area where our seats were, and I felt kind of strange being the only one yelling my head off, but this was Orange County and we were from Riverside.
When the Yanks came none of the genteel people came to the game, people spilled beer on each other, shouted obscenities at each other, and fist-fights broke out in the stands. The ushers seemed unable to effectively control the situation.
After a couple of games like this we decided to trade our Yankees tickets for some other team with fans who didn’t scare the crap out of us.
opiejeanne - July 15, 2009
P.S. I'm older and none of the other fans scare me now.
opiejeanne - July 15, 2009
Shitting on somebodys parade
is pretty weak.
An e-war between blogs is about as gay as Joe Maddon’s black rimmed glasses.
clover_black - July 14, 2009
Agreed
Our argument is not with Rays fans, but with Joe Maddon.
rspencer - July 14, 2009
not cool man......
but whatever
norcaliangelsfan - July 14, 2009
Hopefully it doesn't lead to an anomaly like Kinslers_Bettter XD

Got banned.
Good riddance.

Figgi4life - July 14, 2009
He did?
There was a I HATE THE ANGELS Chapter 2 buried in LSB’s fanpost archives.
27up27down - July 14, 2009
What or who is LSB?
opiejeanne - July 14, 2009
Lone Star Ball, home to the hellspawn, Kinslers_Bettter
XD
27up27down - July 14, 2009
Oh. Thanks.
opiejeanne - July 14, 2009
You're welcome. ;-)
27up27down - July 14, 2009
no angels
and no mention about next years all-star game in anaheim, and the only other time i remember them talking about the angels was when a mets pitcher was pitching and i cant remember if he was on the angels last year he must of been because they were talking about the angels
Halofan4ever - July 14, 2009
THIS IS JUST A SIGN...
That we are going to win it all and Soth with return the favor. Ben Zobrist will be the late-inning utility guy that doesn’t play and someone who has no business in the game (let’s say Aybar) will play 6 solid innings (yes, he’ll go 0-3 but who cares).
kle18 - July 14, 2009
All-Star Game a sham
I watch very little of the All-Star Game because it is unfair.
They need to go one of two ways with this thing to make it legit:
1. Play best 2 out of 3 or whatever it takes to get every deserving player on the team and in the game and stop this World Series home field advantage stuff. Call it what it is, an exhibition game.
2. Give the manager total control over selection of a 25-man roster and play who he wants to try to win home field advantage in the World Series. Call it what it is, a contest with World Series implications for the league riding on it.
California Cajun - July 14, 2009
we'll have the last laugh over Maddon
when we make the playoffs and he doesn’t
Fred Fredrix - July 14, 2009
Here's what annoys me
When Sosh was the AL ASG manager, he bent over backwards to be equitable and inclusive. In fact, I’m not sure I ever remember any ASG manager ever having been so openly biased towards his team.
I’m sure y’all’ll refresh my memory if I’m wrong. . .
rspencer - July 14, 2009
I guess that Figgy didn't need that police escort after all...
red floyd - July 14, 2009
Off topic...
anyone else notice how that “Evony” ad on this site has changed?
She went from like the Evony, Queen of the Rennaissance Fair to Evony, the Slutty Pole Dancer.
sothball - July 14, 2009
I read an article about that somewhere just yesterday
It’s a hilarious descent into desperation.
rspencer - July 14, 2009
Do you have a link to the article?
sothball - July 14, 2009
I went to look around after I posted the mention of it
I haven’t found it yet. I think I got to it from a link in a comment on Ace of Spades. I’ll look there and post back here if I find it.
rspencer - July 14, 2009
Found it!
Here it is.
rspencer - July 14, 2009
And to think the Halos gave Maddon his start. F him too, that totally sucked. Add to it moron Joe Buck telling us that Francisco Rodriguez was warming up for the American League in the 8th when it was Fuentes in the bull pen.
So first place gets you two players (one very very late addition) and no game time.
vinniesdad - July 14, 2009
The last time I actually cared about an All Star game
Was sometime in the early 1970s. To me it’s always been the 3 Day Black Hole in the Middle of An Otherwise Great Summer. And it’s become sooo overhyped and silly.
I’ll be glad when it’s Thursday.
Go Angels.
Zaius - July 14, 2009
Anybody else with me....
everything this year just seems to go wrong, but that is why i think we have something special in the works… we are proving we have the heart of a champion… i honestly feel as though we have a better chance of winning a WS this year than we did last year, just cause we were never really challenged last year…
I honestly can’t wait for the second half and a phenomenal pennant race… let’s go get Halladay and win!
trojanangelfan - July 14, 2009
I think you may be right
To give an example from the NBA, I really think that’s why the Lakers won the NBA this year… last year, they cruised through the playoffs and choked against the Celtics, who had to scratch and claw. This year, the second and third rounds were incredibly hard fought battles that toughened the Lakers for Orlando.
Similarly, I think the Halos will be very tough in the playoffs this year. This year is a perfect example of “That which does not kill me, makes me stronger” (no disrespect towards #34 intended).
red floyd - July 15, 2009
Pardon my french.....
But FUCK JOE MADDON!
TheAntiSox - July 14, 2009
I can second that emotion.
halofolife - July 14, 2009
Rev, do we all get a free F-bomb to use on Joe Maddon?
red floyd - July 15, 2009
I used it
And I’m still here. It was fun.
TheAntiSox - July 15, 2009
Crying about this is lame. Figgins and Fuentes are not going to sweat it. Joe Maddon rocks. He has Angel blood flowing through him. The dude put some serious time in our dugout and clubhouse. Give him some respect.
