The Angels kicked off the '09 draft by addressing their longstanding, system-wide shortage of outfielders with power potential. After taking prep mashers Randal Grichuk and Mike Trout with the 24th and 25th overall picks, Eddie Bane and Co returned to their bread and butter by selecting pitchers with each of their next five picks.
Grichuk put himself on the map as a little leaguer, hitting four home runs in the junior-junior circuit's world series. He also projects to hit for average from the right side, despite some pull tendencies, so his game's not just about going deep. Defense has not been his strong point, so he'll likely be limited to left field. The front office has clearly listened to fans' demands for more power.
The Halos next pick, Mike Trout, is a potential five tool player who should stick in centerfield. According to Baseball America, he began to switch-hit recently, meaning the Halos will likely let him work out those skills in Arizona. Together, he and Grichuk form the better part of a rookie league outfield.
In the supplemental round, the Halos took prep lhsp Tyler Skaggs with the 40th overall pick, college righty Garrett Richards with the 42nd pick, and college lefty Tyler Kehrer with the 48th pick. Skaggs is a highly projectable 6'4" lefty who already throws in the low nineties. I love the pick, but it could take a lot of cash to sign him away from his commitment to Cal State Fullerton.
Minutes later the Halos nabbed Richards, a big guy who grew up in Riverside and attended the University of Oklahoma. Not only was he successful as a starter this spring, but he frequently came out of the pen in '08, and a few more times in '09, so he could move quickly as a setup man. Moreover, he's known as raw, so maybe the Angels believe there's more upside to be had as he matures.
Kehrer's another big lefty, though unlike Skaggs, he's a college guy, coming out of University of Eastern Illinois. He's had mixed results, but his stuff is solid: a low nineties fastball and an improving slider. Like Richards, he's a little rough around the edges, so the Halos must envision him taking another step forward as he refines his skills.
In the second round, the Angels selected Patrick Corbin out of Chipola JC, a left handed pitcher who features a decent fastball and a plus slider. Corbin's committed to Southern Mississippi, but the Halos have a tradition of harvesting significant talent out of Chipola, most recently in Ryan Chaffee. Tom Kotchman is likely behind what most folks will consider an overdraft, so there's every reason to be confident.
The Halos ended their evening by grabbing Joshua Spence, a high-performing college lefty out of Arizona State. He's another aussie, not overpowering, but he can put the ball where he wants it. BA had him going in the fifth or sixth round, so I didn't see that one coming.
The common threads for our last four picks are (1) they're college pitchers with some upside left; (2) they're all difficult to hit, despite three of the four's shaky command; (3) they'll likely sign at slot, or at least for reasonable amounts; and (4) they could all move very quickly as relievers. I sense a bullpen makeover on the distant horizon.

ihearhowie2.0 - June 9, 2009
Kurt Vonnegut fans will nickname him Kilgore Trout!
Yetijuice - June 9, 2009
I like both picks so far...........
Unlike most people in the draft thread LOL………….
Younger in the Outfield……..with some pop……..its fun.
norcaliangelsfan - June 9, 2009
With Sosh as Mgr
we won’t see these guys at Angels stadium for 10 years.
Dono Romantico - June 9, 2009
idk
t evans is looking pretty good right now…
feNOMINAL - June 9, 2009
Matt Davidson
One of the best prep bats was still available. Would have much prefered him.
HaloFanInDC - June 9, 2009
Halos must have thought that Grichuk was a comparable bat at a cheaper price.
And there are still some questions about whether Davidson’s raw power is going to translate into game power.
rghan - June 9, 2009
Have I told you I love you?
lackey41 - June 9, 2009
Top pick
Grichuk was grabbed because he would be cheap. They have $5 mil to spend with $8-10 mil worth of draft slots.
SalmonStream - June 9, 2009
Don't call'em cheap
Until the second round. Let’s see what they do with the sandwich picks.
rghan - June 9, 2009
Sliding 20 picks isn't going to dramatically change the cost of someone looking for overslot money though?
HaloFanInDC - June 9, 2009
Bane blew it!
Hate the Grichuk pick, no way the guy makes it out of High A ball.
I like the Trout pick a lot.
mustard_man - June 9, 2009
The Angels don't have a problem getting guys out of A ball
Now getting them out of AAA is another story. Ask Wood and SRod.
SalmonStream - June 9, 2009
Grichuk is the future for LA!
your an idiot for saying he wont make it out of high A ball! I bet you’ve never seen him play and dont know a thing about him, dont critisize when you dont know your facts!
palmerd3 - June 12, 2009
Seems like a waste
Why not go cheap on someone with a sandwich pick? If you picked the same guy at 24th or 48th, his price isn’t going to change if he’s a good talent looking for overslot money.
HaloFanInDC - June 9, 2009
Looking at who was still available through the supplementary, 2nd and 3rd rounds, I'm going to agree with you.
It seems pretty clear the Halos allowed financial constraints to dictate their latter picks. That’s obvious, and perhaps just realistic, but I do feel like it’s an opportunity passed up that we may regret. Stassi seems like such a no brainer by the third round – it was only the pricetag that got in the way.
Hopefully we’ll also make a splash in the international market.
rghan - June 10, 2009
Rockies got Wheeler
poop.
he’ll KILL in Coors
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
Brett Jackson taken by Cubs
ESPN comment…..“Jackson reminds me too much of the bad Darin Erstad with a power hitter’s K totals.” Ouch!
HaloFanInDC - June 9, 2009
is Stassi still on the board?
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
here's pick number 80...
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
and it's...
Patrick Corbin, yet another LHP
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
Grichuk is the real deal
All you have to do is watch this guy swing the bat to see he has raw potential. This guy can flat out hit the ball, There are some guys that are just born to hit and Grichuk is one of those guys. Bane is been around long enough to know talent when he sees it. I like the pick and I think he will be a star. Mustard man’s comment that he won’[t make it out of High A is ridiculous. His swing looks better than our beloved Brandon Wood.
AMB07 - June 9, 2009
I'm excited to see it.
Hopefully he signs quickly so we can see him in Arizona or even Utah
rghan - June 9, 2009
SLC?
really?
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
I think he means OREM.......
isnt that in Utah?
norcaliangelsfan - June 9, 2009
Yeah, sorry about that
Rookie Pioneer League. Orem Owlz, Utah
rghan - June 9, 2009
hahaha
got it.
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
Hope you are right
However there’s a lot of knowledgeable baseball people who are calling this kid a significant overdraft for the Angels. Time will tell…..
mustard_man - June 9, 2009
Reminds Me of Howie Kendrick
Isn’t Howie suppose to be “born to hit” too?
ttsec - June 9, 2009
i seriously hope we get either Stassi or Matthes with this last pick.
preferably Matthes… time to get another hitter.
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
here comes the last pick of the day
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
Josh Spence
LHP. again.
we really got do something about that.
howiestheman - June 9, 2009
last one......
I bet its a pitcher……..lol
norcaliangelsfan - June 9, 2009
Ha and its a Left hander.........
nice……..4 LHP 2 OF
norcaliangelsfan - June 9, 2009
You know, this could be a very cheap makeover of the pen
I don’t want to sell our last 4 picks short, but given their track records they look like bullpen candidates. We’ve spent an ungodly amount on the bullpen in recent years, and today’s draft might represent the cheapest and best longterm fix available. We still secured five high-upside talents in Grichuk, Trout, and Skaggs. Now go sign’em!
rghan - June 9, 2009
Opportunity costs not withstanding
rghan - June 9, 2009
Huh?
I respect the opinion, however these guys likely won’t see Anaheim before 2013 unless they decide to vacation at Disneyland. Is it the perspective that the pitchers drafted last night will make the big club next year, or is the perspective that the bullpen will be a big pile of stinking dung until these guys arrive on the major league roster?
I for one sincerely hope that Reagins has a solution for the bullpen in 2009, and is not waiting for the prospects drafted in 2009 to arrive.
mustard_man - June 10, 2009
I'm calling it a philosophical shift in bullpen construction.
We had a great five year run with home-built bullpen. In the past couple of years, we’ve dumped exponentially more money into the unit, signing free agents to get an inferior product. I’m not saying that the Halos are going to move the 4 college guys into the bullpen in ‘09 or even ’10, but that they represent the ultimate replacements for FA signings Speier, Fuentes, and Shields (even though Shields was one of our own FA’s). Most of them will probably start over the next couple of years in the minors until we know for sure what they’re capable of.
rghan - June 10, 2009
So figuring out '09s bullpen represents an entirely different issue
rghan - June 10, 2009
Three shall be the number of the counting, and the number of the counting shall be three....
Five is right out.
By my count that’s three.
red floyd - June 10, 2009
Yeah, three it is.
rghan - June 10, 2009
I was thinking about
which i rather have Fuentes or are 1st round pick (32nd overall)
Its a tough one but I think I rather have that pick, we could have gotten Matt Davidson and in 4-6 years we would have 3 power hitters coming up. But no we have Fuentes.
Vladd#27 - June 9, 2009
Fuentes contributes to the Angels
Chances are matt Davidson will not make the show much less be an impact player
hauldog - June 9, 2009
Grichuk's highlights

this guy had the most HRs in the two rounds, and in the showcase was BRYCE HARPER, SI’s golden child
vlad IS my man - June 9, 2009
Nice.
hauldog - June 9, 2009
he's got a pretty nice swing and quick hands........
one thing that was funny about that video was the amount of sponsors…..lol
norcaliangelsfan - June 9, 2009
Oh boy! If MLB ever changes the rules...
… and starts using a pitching machine to hurl belt-high inside fastballs, this guy is going to be MONEY!
Stirrups - June 9, 2009
lol
vlad IS my man - June 9, 2009
And don't forget about the rule change to use aluminium bats too
mustard_man - June 10, 2009
Aaahhhhh
vlad IS my man - June 9, 2009
cant wait to see these guys in Anaheim
4-6 years
Vladd#27 - June 10, 2009
All we've got to do is sign them now
And that’s going to take a chunk of change for the three of them.
rghan - June 10, 2009
If Arte can't afford to pay for the best....
….he should get out of the business. Teams that win have the best opportunity to make money. Teams can’t win without talent. If Bane drafted primarily based on a budget, we’re screwed.
mustard_man - June 10, 2009
Right
But the actual signing process is easier said than done, and can blow up despite the best of intentions. We met our fourth round pick’s asking price twice last year, bidding against ourselves, and it still didn’t work out. Not saying this is going to happen again, just that we shouldn’t take the process for granted.

LOL
Like the look of an Angel uni with Grich – -
on the back. He should wear number 40-something.
cj1646 - June 10, 2009
FWIW pgcrosschecker.com
one of the foremost prospect websites placed both Trout and Grichuck on its list of the top ten offensive prospects in the draft . . .
5. Mike Trout, of, Millville (N.J.) HS
If you had to pick one player in the 2009 draft class who might be the most likely to join the 30/30 club at the major-league level one day, that player might be the multi-talented Trout. He has the running speed, the bat speed and the power swing to do it—if he can just develop the hitting skills.
7. Randal Grichuk, of, Lamar Consolidated HS, Rosenberg, Texas
Grichuk has been a home-run hitting phenom since Little League and hit 25 home runs this spring adding up scrimmages, regular season and state playoffs—despite his considerable reputation as a power threat and everyone knowing what he can do. He’s a righthanded-hitting corner outfielder, not a great demographic, but he might hit the ball harder than anyone in the 2009 prep class

G Abbes - June 10, 2009
It's kind of funny...
that most commentary on Grichuk starts with how many home runs he hit in Little League. How many times do you see the highlights on a player going back to Little League?
mustard_man - June 10, 2009
Mike Trout? works for me
we’ve had pretty good luck with fish-themed OFs in the past….
HaloDutch - June 10, 2009
Bring Salmon back as a coach
Sign a Finn, Bass and Flounder and we’ve got the start for an aquarium….
mustard_man - June 10, 2009
Ricky Bass was an outfielder at the University of Hawaii at Manoa . . . .
. . . . the first couple years that I was an undergraduate (1979-1982). Ricky is the son of the late ex-L.A. Ram fullback Dick Bass.
Imagining a Salmon, Trout, Finn, Bass, and Flounder (Animal House!) on the same team reminds me of the first team to play in Wrigley Field, the 1914-15 Chicago Whales in the Federal League. BaseballReference.com only lists the win totals for the Federal League. Both seasons the Whales finished with one win less than the league leader. Misery started early in the Friendly Confines!
