4:07 PM GAME TONIGHT - Jered Weaver @ Casey Jannsen... one of our players drives this oversized Hummer to work every day. It has Florida plates. It is parked int he players' parking lot at each home game, I finally had to snap a pic. Who's is it? So for the lunch thread, if you made $400K per year, what kind of car would you drive to work?

Abreu?
I thought he had the tricked-out Hummer. They all “live” in FLA to avoid state income tax.
raskul - June 3, 2009
Sorry buddy
Living in Florida does not avoid any income tax.
hauldog - June 3, 2009
no state taxes though right?
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2009
Yes, there is no state tax, but
MLB players are taxed by venue and file income tax returns in every state they play in. If you play for the Marlins or the Rangers than you can avoid the state tax on home games.
If you have significant endorsements than I suppose it would be worthwhile to live in either of those states.
hauldog - June 3, 2009
Correct - No personal income tax
Also no tax on “intangible personal property” (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, money market funds, etc.).
Oh, what a high-class problem to have!
raskul - June 3, 2009
Not sure, but that's the most ghetto thing I've ever seen...
I can’t stand when people take something and completely destroy it. I’m an engineer, so the first thing that comes to mind is form over function. Hummers were designed as off-road vehicles. They weren’t designed for Starbuck’s sipping OC yuppies to throw 23" chrome rims and low-profile tires on. These are the people who think driving into the dirt parking lot at their kids lacrosse game constitutes off-roading,
3rd Echelon - June 3, 2009
Don't blame OC.
Taking a military combat off-road technology and turning it into a latte-chasing soccer limo was originally The Governator’s idea.
Stirrups - June 3, 2009
This is an H2...
These are not built for real off-road duty. That is just a Chevy Avalanche in a muscle suit, so no harm done. Of course, it’s still lame.
thetooth - June 3, 2009
btw
Humvees aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. They can go anywhere, but they were designed to break. Just one of the perks of winning a bidless and open-ended government contract.
Just my .02 (from 5+ years of experience with them)
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
Well it's not Joe Saunders', his is silver gray.
44FAN - June 3, 2009
How do you get them to STOP???? They usually just drive on by when I’m there.
Downing Rules - June 3, 2009
Do you have kids???
Most of the second tier players stopped for my boys when we went.
Sweetmeats - June 3, 2009
Saunders isnt 2nd tier
Vladd#27 - June 3, 2009
This monstrosity has got to be Napoli's
If I made $400k a year? 911 Turbo, boyeee
Higz - June 3, 2009
I refuse to believe that...
It may be true, but I like Napoli. I don’t want to believe he’d drive that piece of crap. I like to think he’d pony up for an H1.
thetooth - June 3, 2009
Napoli is totally into crappy rap music
That Hummer is precisely the kind of shit you’d see in a rap video. Thus is my reasoning.
Higz - June 3, 2009
I'd have a '68 Mustang fastback
Not too much to ask for?
Monkeyspanked - June 3, 2009
Cobra GT 500 KR?
Yes please.
PhiSlamma - June 3, 2009
funny
I saw a GT350 in my neighborhood yesterday…
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
'66 was better
My dad had a ‘66 fastback with the high performance engine. My mom made him sell it when I was about 3. I’m not sure either of us has completely forgiven her for that.
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
If I had MLB money, I'd get an
’86 Buick Grand National. Stock.
red floyd - June 3, 2009
why?
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
One of the last REAL muscle cars
Andyman - June 3, 2009
OK
but still…late 80s GM is about as bottom of the barrel as you can get, as far as quality and looks (the latter being, of course, highly subjective).
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
88 Pontiac Grand Prix
Worst car I have ever owned—and that is saying a lot.
Higz - June 3, 2009
0-60 4.9 seconds.
In Car&Driver’s tests for that year, it beat everything except a Porsche 911 Turbo.
Buick engineers claimed that GM killed it because it regularly trashed Corvette on the test track.
red floyd - June 4, 2009
I thought it was Vlad who owns the white Hummer (he doesn’t drive it, he has a driver).
Downing Rules - June 3, 2009
he's got a purple one
I think it’s an Escalade
Higz - June 3, 2009
i know for a fact
vlad has a red H2. but of course its probably ONE of his cars..
b0rd3rline - June 3, 2009
yeah
Higz - June 3, 2009
i wonder which big leaguers own a Prius…probably Zito haha
jtkelly86 - June 3, 2009
The Soth
drives a Prius. Carpools with Roenicke, too, at least some of the time.

Player's cars
Several years ago they played video interviews of the players during pitching changes.
They asked “Who has the nicest car?”. Then they showed player after player saying “GA does”. “Garrett”. “That would be GA”. When they asked GA, he paused just for a second, looked at the interviewer like he was crazy, and said “I DO!”.
raskul - June 3, 2009
could be wrong
but I saw him and his family at Whole Foods one night in December/January.
thought it was a dark 7 series…?
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
Whole Foods
I saw GA there twice. Once at the current location at the District and prior to that at the old location by Newport and Irvine Blvd. I never bothered him though.
stolenbases - June 3, 2009
GA's Firebird, looks like a '68?
44FAN - June 3, 2009
wheels
are wrong for that car.
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
Welcome to 2009
People have no idea what looks good on cars anymore
Higz - June 3, 2009
None
If I made 400K a year, I suspect I wouldn’t have to drive anywhere to work; I’d have my office at home.
Seriously, though, maybe a Maserati Quattroporte.
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
Not Complaining
I have no complaints about what I do drive, though. I’ve got performance that ain’t far behind the Quattroporte at about 1/4 the price.
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
Really?
What do you drive?
WiHaloFan - June 3, 2009
Hmm
I posted, but it didn’t take. 2008 Infiniti G35 sedan. Just bought it in late January. I love it. Only a couple grand more than a boring Honda Accord (my previous vehicle).
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
1/4?
how about 400HP, and AWD from a wagon with half the displacement of a hemi?
paid $12,500.
I’d like to see if there are any import enthusiasts in MLB, and what they drive…
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
sorry
almost 1/3rd displacement, half the cylinders.
and, equal/better performance for 1/16th price?
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
Subaru?
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
.
indeed.
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
You are not getting 400 hp from a $12,500 Subaru. Sorry.
Higz - June 3, 2009
not from the dealership, no.
’05 WRX Wagon.
STI VF39 Turbo, STI TMIC, Injectors
Cobb SRI, Perrin Up Pipe, full 3" exhaust, Cobb Accessport
Tuning by Harman Motive in Torrance
Too much suspension to list.
On my stock tires, it pulls away from stock STI’s, which, with conservative test numbers (http://www.caranddriver.com/features/all/2008/road_test_digest), runs 13.5 in the quarter. Also, the pre’08 STI was a bit quicker…
With some decent rubber (aside from the slicks in my garage), that’s Z06 territory.
So, yes, I AM getting 400HP, and that isn’t, by far, the max this engine can take. My build is VERY mild. There are plenty of 500+ HP STI’s roaming Irvine…
GarageTuning.com can do better than 500, easy.
As for price, yes—I bought the car used, with everything on it, for $12.5k.
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
Gotcha
I thought you were trying to say Subaru was offering a car that could do that.
Even so, with AWD, I imagine 400 hp at the flywheel translates into a big dropoff at the WHEELS…
Higz - June 3, 2009
290 whp
but don’t forget the power/weight ratio.
also, stock STI’s come with 300 out of the box…
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
Porsche Boxster-S
Probably a bit faster than my ’96 Dodge pick-up…and with less rust.
WiHaloFan - June 3, 2009
Naps is from Florida, has to be his ride.
If I was bankrolling 400k, I’d probably be still driving my Silverado.
Or a hover car. Have those come out yet?
clover_black - June 3, 2009
uhh, Howie's from Fla too...as is Figgy if memory serves...
K3YEROUT - June 3, 2009
Figgins is from GA.

I’d like to think I’d still drive my 2006 Tacoma……but honestly I dont know.

1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible
Original numbers matching.

That car is my ‘Eleanor’. Less than 100 ever built. With gas at 3 bucks a gallon, hopefully my office is not too far down that winding Santa Barbara County backroad!!

i had that dream too.
feNOMINAL - June 3, 2009
SWEET!
Not sure I’d want to drive something like that “to work.” That would be my drive to the beach/picnic at the vineyard car. Actually, I’d go for a ’66 chevelle SS 396 convertible.
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
Awesome....
I’d go for an early 60’s Lincoln Continental… convertible… black on black.
One day, my precious, one day………
thetooth - June 3, 2009
heh.
I’d probably upgrade the Civic to an Accord. A nice one, though.

i have always wanted a 1967 vw bus
since i was 16 that is all i ever wanted. i begged my parents for one! i wanted to put a couch in the back of it.
my dad said no because he thought i would f*$# my girlfriend in the back of it. He was right, but who cares!
kingfish - June 3, 2009
Who cares? Hopefully your GF.
sothball - June 3, 2009
I was thinking Figgy, Howie or Napoli
I went with Naps.
BBFan1 - June 3, 2009
Figgins or Kendrick
I think I saw Mathis & Napoli (together) in some kind of pickup truck. I don’t think Shields would drive that. Maybe a Hummer, but not that one. So, that leaves Figgins or Kendrick.
jjackflash - June 3, 2009
What if the pickup was Mathis's?
Higz - June 3, 2009
Shields drives a Land Rover, IIRC

But my hilarious female friend seriously believes it might be “Krotchman’s”

Rev Halofan - June 3, 2009
I love the sars from the late 50's - early 60's with the "wings"...
…my parents had a ‘60 Chevy “Biscayne”…it’s wings were more pronounced than the ones on your Buick. That 2 tone paint job is awesome!
sothball - June 3, 2009
*cars, not sars
sothball - June 3, 2009
Yeah, look at these three pages. Notice how the wings disappear rolling from 1959 through 1961.
1959 Buick Invicta/Electra
1960 Buick Invicta/Electra
1961 Buick Invicta/Electra
The ’59s are actually the coolest of the lot. The two-tone paint job was not a factory option for the 1960 (this particular VIN was all white). That idea came to Buick with the 1961 model year. But a prior owner had it repainted that way and it really makes the body work stand out. I refuse to put it back to stock. That means that I can show it, but not win anything (too large of a deduction). However, it IS a fan favorite. Usually one of the more popular cars in any show. And, with the engine/drive train/suspension/brakes/exhaust totally rebuilt it is eminently driveable. Like being on parade. Especially in the Angels Stadium parking lot!!!
Stirrups - June 3, 2009
The link to the 60's series...
…is a wagon, so the “wings” don’t really show.
But yes, the wings disappeared by…’62?
I have a good friend from…well as far back as I can remember. His parents bought a 1959 Ford Galaxie 500 HARD TOP CONVERTIBLE. My friend was the 2nd youngest of 9 kids (yes, 9!), and each one of the kids drove that as their first car. By the time my friend drove it, it was completely thrashed. But, his mom held on to it, and had it completely restored a few years ago. It is remarkable, considering the use it has had.
I had a chance to see it a couple of years ago. It brought back some fond memories of cruising down Van Nuys Blvd (top down ‘cause it didn’t work anymore) as an 18 year old…smoking cigars, drinking beer, and checking out the fairer sex.
Anyway, it looks like the 60 Invicta is in good hands. I’m sure we will see it in the2009 Angels World Series Victory Parade!
sothball - June 3, 2009
In each of those years, the three models were virtually the same car.
The Electra was the top of the line model,
The Invicta was the sport/performance model, and
The Le Sabre was the family model.
The body pieces are totally interchangeable. So the sedans that are Electra and le Sabre are the equivalent of my car.
Downtown Garden Grove (old Main St.) has a car rally EVERY Friday evening, rain or shine (make sure to put your name in at Azteca Elvis Mexican restaurant as soon as you get there!) A couple of weeks ago there were a dozen Ford Galaxy 500’s from the late ’50s that were in town for a Ford car show. Absolutely incredible!
Stirrups - June 3, 2009
I live in Torrance...
…there is a similar car rally in Redondo Beach on Friday nights (north of the pier). My next door neighbor bought a COMPLETELY restored ’71 El Camino about 5 years ago for $20,000.00. The gut that restored it gave him about 500 photos showing stages or restoration, plus the original factory papers. It is a beautiful vehicle.
sothball - June 4, 2009

Technically, the military version is not a "Hummer " or “HumVee”, but HMMVW (pronounced “HumVee”), which stands for High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle.

Pedantic? There has to be some word for way beyond pedantic concerning that post!!
