Let's just say that by the 8th inning, when the Rays' mascot (a blue walrus looking thing) and his companion, a costumed bottle of Pepsi (this is not a plug, in fact I prefer the real thing, Coca Cola), entered the Angels television broadcast booth, it was a visual and audible relief for fans to look at the sight of broadcasters Mark Gubicza and Rory Markus instead of the product on the field.
While the mascot appeared to be giving nonstop pats on the back to the team for fielding nice minor league competition for the defending American League champion Rays, the Angels were watching John Lackey's possible free agent draft compensation wither from "A" status to "B" as the former ace dead-armed 5 runs in the 2nd inning, 2 more in the 3rd and 2 after that in the 5th.
Lackey was Lackluster. The Angels offense stranded 15 men on base. I can't imagine anyone except fans of other teams wanting to read any more about this gruesome massacre.

Your best post game recap in a long while. If only the Angels could match your manic prose.

Hired Bill Stoneman
Hired Mike Scioscia
Promoted Tony Reagins to Manager of Baseball Operations, then to Director of Player Development

other than the disney cement rock pile
I have no complaints over Disney ownership. Although at game 1 of 2002 ALDS, I was buried by crap because I was wearing my colors and four rows behind me Eisner was incognito wearing a suit without a tie. Not even a cap. Schmuck

It pains me to think that
on September 30th, a mid-week evening game against Texas, when this particular squad has long-since boneheaded its way out of contention and local interest in this season is at its nadir, once again there may be only 15,000 fans in attendance. And I will be sitting there in the very familiar territory of lonely hometown fan that was my youth, wondering if the clock has struck nine on our version of “Shoeless Joe of Hannibal, Mo”.
And the past 7 seasons are only memories.
Stirrups - June 10, 2009
This was a pathetic game, but...
..(OK, here goes the glass half full sermon), it’s still too early to give up.
Positives;
- 3 1/2 games back. Not insurmountable by any means.
- We are finally getting healthy.
- On a 9 game road trip against 3 tough opponents, we are 4-4.
- The bullpen can only improve, or so my deluded mind wants to believe. Rich Thompson looked sharp tonight.
- Vlad had 2 hits!
Yes, there are lots of negatives to counteract the positives (Lackey getting smacked around, slugging % still anemic, GMJ in the line-up, and so on). But, I STILL believe this team will improve over the balance of the season. In ways, I am still amazed we are over .500.
And if they don’t improve, Mrs. Sothballl and I will be part of the 15,000 sitting out there for that game against Texas near the end of the season.

I ain't giving up. But I fear the bandwagoners will be.
On that quiet, lonely night, give us a shout out. I’ll probably be able to hear it. I will be the guy riasing my hand…

I agree with you on Vladdy...
I’m not going to sit here and make pretend that the guy is starting to slow down. It was great to see him starting to hit instead of flailing wildly. He looked at lot more focused during his at-bats tonight. It may be a fluke, but then again it may not. His flat out run to 3rd on the triple made me cheer (and I haven’t done that much lately). It’s painful to watch him run, but there’s no doubt that he was giving it everything he had. There’s still a little “Eye of the Tiger” left IMHO.
3rd Echelon - June 10, 2009
thank you sothball
and yes, tonight wasnt all that bad. I mean our bullpen pulled through…we did score five runs. Main problem? Lackey…plain and simple. Sure we left some player on base but frankly, LOTS of teams do that…and there are plenty of games when we get the key runs and actually do win. We should be doing better but we arent out of it by any means…
And I think we all agree that Lack will be back.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - June 10, 2009
Irony...
…starting pitching seemed better prior to Lackey & Santana returning.;
- Saunders has hit a bump int the road.
- Lackey had had…one decent start?
- Santana has had 2 good starts and 2 train wrecks.
- Weaver has been the only consistency SP.
Palmer was on such a good roll. I don’t know how long it would last, but it would have been interesting to find out. Now, he’s just “picking pine out of his butt” in the bullpen. I wish they would have tried Escobar out of the ’pen. It needs stability & improvement more than any other part of this team. 2-3 weeks down the road – when Palmer eventually “regressed” and Shields (hopefully) re-discovered how to pitch (again) – they could then return Esobar to SP.
Oh well…let’s hope Rich Thompson brings some stability. I doubt it will come from Jepsen!

how do you make new fan posts.. I have one I’d like to publish but when I do it says no body can’t publish.. I then added tags and links and that didn’t work..What do I do ??
raven191 - June 10, 2009
I had a hell of a time getting my last fanpost to publish.
The new format SUCKS and does not work properly. I went to manage fanpost (in the upper left hand corner) and started from there then it worked. Clicking on new fanpost in the fanpost column does not work unless you hit the save button and then it goes to your personal page and you can publish it or edit it from there.
I missed the game, had to work, but it looks like Big John got knocked around a bit. Too bad, so sad. Lackey looking rusty still.
44FAN - June 10, 2009
That's odd. I find it to be real easy. Keeping it simple:
Typically, you enter your title in teh box lebeled “Story Headline”.
Then, in the main body window titled “Intro and Extended Entry”, you enter your opening text in the space above the bar with the word “jump” in it. Minimum word count is 75.
As to not clutter up the front page of the blog, for long posts put the balance of your text below “jump”.
At any time, should you want to insert a picture at a particular point, spot your insert cursor at that point and click the little icon that looks like a picture frame in the box to the right of the main body (you will see the icon under “MEDIA & ASSETS”.)
Or, should you want to insert a video at a particular point, spot your insert cursor at that point and click the little icon that looks like a TV in the box to the right of the main body (again, you will see the icon under “MEDIA & ASSETS”.)
Then, I recommend clicking the Preview button to verify that everything is going to appear correctly to your audience. I would imagine that if you are going to have have problems clicking Publish, they will manifest themselves first with Preview.
Stirrups - June 10, 2009
The problem is when you hit either the preview button or the publish button at the bottom
it does’nt do either. When I clicked the save button it only saved the first part of the body.

Do you have Javascript enabled for your browser?
I’m no expert, but that sounds like a scripting problem.

the autotagging function takes about ten seconds
then you press the green button again and all is well.

Lackey isn't quite looking the ace we assume he is
He hasn’t pitched in the first month of the season two years in a row and in 2009 is going through a bad stretch.
Is it just a bump in the road or is it downhill from here?
BBFan1 - June 10, 2009
he's not right, the fastball is bearly hitting 90 mph
tanana40 - June 10, 2009
remember when he came up and could hit 97 if he had too
don’t think he can do that anymore :(
MH252525 - June 10, 2009
Head Master of the Circle Jerk of Bitching Club here
Here are some positives.
Howie is having better abs. If he gets going the offense will be better than it has to say the least.
Lackey is our #5 starter, 6 if you count Palmer. Weaver, Saunders, Santana and Esky are a dominant top 4.
Chopper had another great outing. Nice curve there young man! Hi Ashley!
It felt like the Angels had played more than their fair share of tough opponents early on. So I calculated the Angels opponents winning percentage. I’m a math teacher….. that’s what I do…. hehe. And anyway the results showed that when averaged based on number of times faced, it is .512. So yes the Angels have been facing tougher opponents on average. So the Angels will be facing some teams that haven’t done as well. Looking forward to interleague play again. Watching the Dodgers game last night, it looked like a AAAA game. So many 88mph meatballs. You just don’t see that in the AL nearly as often.
MH252525 - June 10, 2009
I think it is time to bring back Matty and send Lackey somewhere to get it figured out.
44FAN - June 10, 2009
whoa...such a rash decision...
how unusual of you 44FAN. Hey remember than Erv had two HORRENDOUS starts and pulled together. Lackey can have one or one and a half bad starts right?
He was nails in Toronto…turn the page.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - June 10, 2009
Lackey slightly out of options
so, no, not happening.

Did you remove the “Was Underage Courtney Driving Drunk?” fanpost? Or was it the creator, ReggieBullits?

Rev Halofan - June 10, 2009
Timing
Lackey picked a bad time to pitch terribly; his free agent stock has probably plummeted.
His second straight year on the DL; 1-2, 6.61 ERA in six games since return from the DL.
