Lunch Thread - Post your 80s Pic

1988_medium

Post a picture of yourself in the 1980s in this thread.

This is me in January 1988. To think that some gutless "fans" go to Angel road games during these current glory years with NO gear on while I was fighting in the trenches, in the heart of Dodger country back as the lean years were getting dark and gloomy... Anyone else got your war stories and photos?

Tonight is Retro 80s night at the Big A. Robert Ray (born in 1984) faces Jered Weaver (born in 1982). The Blue Jays look for real.

Let's talk about the 1980s at lunch. Back when MTV played music videos 24/7, back when the Cold War was fought with weapons that didn't yet exist, back when the Savings and Loan industry was the bad guy and We Are the World was the good guys... oh boy, do you really want to go back?

Mullets are still in style in certain areas of West Virginia and the Ozarks...

so, it could not possibly be “best of the 80’s.”

We are talking about “civilization” and not just “earth” here…

Oh, baby do you know what that's worth?

Oh, Heaven is a place on Earth.

No thank you to mid to late 80s pop music

The mullet

Business in the front, party in the back, douche-bag all around

Toss up

between the mullet and mohawk, voted mullet for the comedy factor

Im a 80's baby

my kitchen has the same formica flooring

and that was installed here in … THE 1980s!!!!

Same house since the 80's?

Damn your die-hard Southern California. Props to you.

The '80's...

…meet this cute chick-a-dee, got hitched, graduated from college, help produce 2 little sothballs, bought the house we still live in…all in all, good times.

Slowly re-living a lot of it it as I transfer our home videos to digital/hard drive.

Some of the music from that era I still love… Pretenders, Cars, Police, Clash, B-52’s, Tom Petty, the Go’Go’s….mmm, mmmm…too much good stuff.

I didn't want to talk Angel baseball as that would require referencing...

…the year that follows 1985, and a certain playoff game that STILL makes we commit some obscene act of violence, which actually led to a participant committing an obscene act of violence…ugh.

(PURE cleansing thoughts, deep breath, PURE cleansing thoughts..)

Damn...

Me too…
Except the little floyds came in the 90s, and we moved from our first house in 1999.

Pretenders? Clash? Petty? Hell yeah.
The Clash...

I hold the unenviable distinction of falling asleep during a Clash concert.

Us ’83. New Wave day. They were the last act, and were delayed due to some contract BS. I was wiped and zoned during their set.

"Wiped and zoned" seemed to go with the times...
do you listen to Jack FM Sothball?

They play quality 80’s music throughout the day.

no i dont...where....when?
93.1fm in the LA metro area

its good stuff!

hell yeah

and their in their breaks in between songs are always hilarious

not living in the LA area right now...

Should be within the next year. Maybe I can stream ’em…..

San Diego has Jack too if you live here
931jackfm.com!
where do you live?

They have Jack throughout the country i was at coachella a few weeks ago and it was 95.9 there.

Yeah...but I found a slightly better station...

…(hope I’m not breaking any rules by plugging a station) 100.3 (The Sound). It’s pretty good!

So I go between 93.1, 100.3. If I have a longer commute – and depending on my mood – I’ll play a classical, Jazz , musical, or soundtrack CD.

Listened to part of the soundtrack from “The Commitments” today. If you love soul, it is sooooo good.

100.3 is pretty good...sometimes it faulters with a Dave Mathews song or some crap like that, but overall it aint bad. I love a station that plays deep cuts.

I saw The Commitments as a kid, then re-visited it when I was in high school because I was getting into a lot of soul music. So I go to Tower, buy the cassette and then when I get in the car I quickly realize all the songs were by The Commitments. I had bought the soundtrack thinking it was going to be the original versions of all the songs they played. After owning the tape for roughly 5 minutes, I threw it out the window of my moving car.

LOL...I hope it landed at "The Dark End of the Street".
Flying Burrito Brothers?
My reference was to...

…this.

I forgot that song was in the movie...got into the burrito bros a few years back and always thought that was a great soul song, especially coming from a more country rock band.
I have never seen the movie are any part of it until that clip

Thanks!

It's a pretty funny movie...I love the music...
From the crummy little building in Culver City
awesome red

I like it when a caller sings a song before they play it lol. Btw I see you are a clash fan as well!

Rev,

I was gonna make some snide comment about wearing glasses so thick that you could see into the future… and then I looked into the mirror.

Had a flattop, glasses (as well) and a porn star (undeserved) mustache.

I apologize for my original evil thoughts.

Ahhh, the eighties…..

My wife had the same...goggles? Damn they were huge.

The look on the Rev’s face is sort of “…send your tired, poor, huddled masses…I’ll kick their asses too!”

Dodgers…we don’t dodge nothin’.

Those are some pimp glasses

kinda makes you look like a hipster

Agree

Belongs in Silver Lake

My son and I at Disneyland

My son is now 26…I was once 26, but that was so long ago.

What were we talking about?

I was so much older then

I’m younger than that now.

Yeah...that was The Byrds?
...the reason I ask...coincidentally the Flying Burrito Bros. were mentioned above...

I coincidentally spent much of the 80s listening to the Burrito Brothers. It’s quite a blessing to have parents with good music.

Ha!!!! That pic is awesome, Rev, and now I can totally see the David Keith resemblance.
I don't have an 80's pics here at work, unfortunately, although I'm drinking a Pepsi Throwback right now.
yeah i was born in the late 80's

so i’ve got nothing either.

but i am going to the game tonight!!

"i've got nothing either"?!

ugh… brain not functioning too well.

in any case, i don’t have any 80’s pics, as i was an infant. that was what i was going for.

I would SO do this

but I don’t have my 80’s photos — which are not generally digitized and few in number anyway — readily handy.

Develop that Kodak 110 film and then scan...
bada bing! LOL!!
i wish i had some of my 80's pics

on my new laptop… i was born in 83 and have an epic pic of me in a bombers helmet! awesome! gotta love the 80’s…

I love 80s pop culture

I like to divide the 80’s up from 1980-1982, 1983, and then 1984-1989.

From what I have observed, it seems like the US in 1980, 1981, and 1982 (though here we begin to see some changes) were basically like 1978 and 1979 in terms of hairstyle (helmet hairdo for men seemed to still be popular), the use of orange and brown, and US Billboard Mainstream Pop music trends which for the most part seemed dominated by soft rock sprinkled with a few New Wave top 40 hits here and there (mostly from 1982), with synths and drum machines not yet ubiquitous in US top 40 music.

1983 seems to be a transition year in US pop culture with New Wave finally becoming mainstream in the US.

1984 though is the first year IMO that seems to meet most people’s conceptions of what the 1980s is in terms of music (lots of synths, drum machines, hair metal bands like Ratt and Twisted Sister), fashion, and dress.

I am probably wrong, but that’s what I have observed through attempting to study 80s pop culture.

The next thing I can feel coming on is the 90's nostalgia...ughhh

My problem with it is that the nostalgia is just so empty…like grasping for something that’s not there. I’ve had two separate groups of friends lately that had two different 90’s themed parties, as well as a bar I know of having a 90’s night now. I gripe that most of the funny, kitschy nostalgia they are harkening back to is really just from 90-92/93…i.e. stuff that was held over from the end of the 80’s. Their idea of 90’s nostalgia is really taking it’s cues from 1988.

I bet there was some "Cherry Pie" at the parties

Fan from day one…

I had the same look on my face...

… In October of 2002…

Hall & Oates

In the video for “Family Man”, I believe one of the kids is wearing an Angels hat

Bingo

I remembered seeing that also.

Alway thinking he looked like Mike Witt without the stache.

Mike looks a little like Nick Adenhart i say.
Jimmuscomp chiming in..

That’s me on the right, circa 1991. I don’t see any pics on my CPU from the 1980’s…

The other guy is Dave Deroo – he went on the become the bass player in Adema and played in a band with Jonathan Davis from Korn around this time as well…

What type of music?

looks like classical from the Baroque period. ;)

Ehhh

Grungy, funky rock…

Pearl Jam meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers meets Soundgarden meets ???

Dinosaur Jr meets Husker Du
meets thank-god that era is over...and all the alt-bros it produced.
Hey now...

… Pavement and the Pixies came out of that Era

+1 for Frank Black...
Frank Black is playing at Detroit bar is Costa Mesa...either tonight or tomorrow, can't remember right now.
+10 to you all

for the pixies and frank black/black francis talk on HH

Nothing in the world better than Frank Black, but I saw him at Detroit about a year ago and the shit sound in that place does not do well for him. It was a very disappointing show.

Wow, what a fall from grace.
Wait, a Pavement fan from the NW? No way!

i was more referring to Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/Candlebox crew…

I know...

.. A rarity. Almost as rare as a PDX bar having PBR on tap…

hahaha....are you in Portland? I think I asked that once...

Bees playing the Beavers for a 4 game series starting Friday. Im going to at least two of the games and Im making a sign that reads:

“Wood 3:16”

Actually leaving for Las Vegas tommorow...

Can’t pass up the opportunity to gamble on a halos-royals series.

P.S.

Things Ive learned from vegas via Halos Heaven:
1. Diet Coke will mix with anything
2. Pattimelt is a slot-playing machine
3. The Hilton Sportsbook Customer Service is lacking…
4. The Rev is not afraid to hit on 17.

correction

#2. Pattimelt will win ANYTHING merely by standing by it. She’s the Most Interesting Woman of Winning

i stand corrected.
1986-1989

My career as a scrappy 1st baseman for the Fresno-Sierra Little League Angels began my love for the Halos.

Look at them legs...well one anyway!!! Damn girl!!!

“…Mom just had to pose you…” in your “normal” condition of talking on the phone?

hey, I was a teen girl. I have no idea who I was speaking to
LOL! Since seeing that photo, I've been humming another song from the '80's...

“…she’s got legs….she know how to use ’em…”

ZZTop rocks!
and look how that girl ended up!!
Crappy 80s music that the Big A can play for the Halos

“Broken Wings”
“Wind Beneath My Wings”

Is anyone watching the pregame show?
I'm a Charter victim

I don’t even have the TV on.

I didn't show up in pictures in the '80s

I was going through this weird vampire phase.

I got better.

The Stirrups' HH Clan, 1989.

There was no need to point out it was 1989.

Those jeans tell that tale…

The oak furniture should have been your tipoff.
Hey, what's wrong with oak?

I like oak tables. The oak trim on the couch and chair, however….

omg ...that is not you?!?!?!

the kids look like mine…one blondie, one brunette

Ok. Now THAT is going to start a new flood of comments.
LOL!

What is it with kids and laundry baskets?

I swear I have a jillion pics of me and my brother in laundry baskets when we were tots.

Good lookin boys BTW!

thanks!

I don’t know about the laundry baskets….but I remember climbing in them as a kid (or a large box). Instant car!!

Kids...they always surprise you...

…we had a variety of toys for our kids…swing set, tree house, Ninja Turtles, Barbie stuff, cars, musical instruments and noise makers of all sorts. What did they have the most fun with?

Cardboard tubes! I had brought home 2 – 36" diameter tubes about 4’ long. I had intended to use them for a construction project. Well, they quickly found these tubes were great “interactive” toys. One would get inside and brace themselves inside the tube. The other would roll the tube till they hit the wall, planter, etc. The one in the tube would emerge a bit dizzy while the other giggled themeselves silly. Then they’d switch. Or they’d get in and get the tube rolling “hamster style”. Then that turned in to races….which was funny ‘cause they couldn’t see where they were going. These tubes turned out to be one of those rare toys that they actually shared and enjoyed.
I never did use the tubes for the project…I ended up with much better memories anyway!

Ah the days when I had blonde hair
Don't feel too bad...

…I look at photos from 20 years ago and say, “Ah the days when I had hair”.
