Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Toronto 13, Angels 1
Unlike many Angels losses this season, the terrible umpiring being called out by manager Mike Scioscia came late in the game after the outcome was no longer in doubt. A warning issued to Angels pyromaniac gascan Justin Speier - who hit a batter after yielding up a 3-run homer to Blue Jay Lyle Overbay. Speier animatedly contested the warning and Scioscia came out to defend the 77 MPH sinker that hit Toronto catcher Rod Barajas. Speier threw 37 pitches in a 5-Run 8th to ensure that the 8 - 0 blowout would become an obliteration.
Either Angel starter Anthony Ortega turned into a pumpkin tonight or his fabulous pitching against the Yankees last week reveal the New York team to be a Triple-A caliber club. Or perhaps the Blue Jays are for real. But the real story in the American league West tonight was the assumption of first place by the Texas Rangers.
Here comes the story of the Hurricane Rangers...
Meanwhile, far away in another part of the league, the Texas Rangers and a couple of A's were hanging around. The number three contender for the American League West crown had no idea what kind of Silva was about to go down. When the Royals threw the Mariners to the side of the road, just like the time before in 1970-something, for the Mariners that's just the way things go, if Silva's pitching you might as well not show up on the field, unless its first place you wanna yield.
That's all I got...

2.5 games behind
Gonna repeat that as I go to sleep tonight.
Instead of counting sheep I’ll be seeing Lackey, Santana and Escobar jumping over a fence, one after another…
Crap, my imaginary Lackey is already wearing pinstripes!

Nice baserunning by HK
at the end there, got us few Angels fans left at the stadium up on our feet.
Blue was awefully quick with that finger after the hit batter, I would’ve been pissed if I was Speier too.
TheTypingFiend - May 6, 2009
Had to love that. He and Mathis showed a little pride there, ruining Doc's shutout.

Bello and Bradley
who both baldly lied, would have done a better job at keeping the Halos in this contest.
Kidding aside, is Arte willing to eat the rest of Speier’s contract? The Angels have decisions to make once Lackey, Santana, Moseley and Escobar return. My understanding is that Loux, Bulger and Moseley do not have any option years left. I figure Ortega and Rodriguez go back down once Santana and Lackey return. But they’ll need to demote two more guys for Moseley and Escobar. Even assuming they send down Willits (and just go with one more pitcher), they still have to jettison someone. Will it be Grand Slam Bulger, who at least has a fastball that tops 90? Will it be Speier, who’s really just a slingballer who needs to throw 92-94 to be effective, but no longer can? Will it be journeyman Matt Palmer, who has been better [small sample size] than both Bulger and Speier?
jjackflash - May 6, 2009
money is on Speier
and the newspapers will all go along for the ride!

3rd Echelon - May 6, 2009
To be honest, I thought there was a bright spot tonight.
And it was from, of all places, the bullpen.
Discounting UninSpeiered, the bullpen pitched 5.2 innings of fairly good ball. Maybe they’re getting their act together.

I am 95% sure that I saw Billy Mac's pig-tailed lady...
She was out in P239 last night. I laughed. The “cell-phone” friend was with her, too. You think you might change your hairdo after being broadcast on HH for all the world to see.

Been busy all day
Then come back to check on the Angels game. A bit of a shock.
Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

i dont see how you could have a worse night on the mound the shields
4 walks and a hit batter? home run? getting the manager ejected? flipping out again after the next inning? it was a melt down before our very eyes.
my bro (groggy braves fan) said it best. better to get this kind of a game out of the way against someone like doc. whether it was 13 runs or hill got the last hit of the game for the jays in the first, we were doomed.
also an interesting observation by me. Everytime napoli gets a little media love he always slumps a little right after. when more articles starting popping up like three days ago, i thought to myslef alright lets see if it happens again, and if so, it may be something. its almost like it goes to his head and he gets complacent. he really needs the competition for playing time at the catcher position.
silver lining? Halladay is on my fantasy team

Note about Ortega...
he must have too big of a cup or something… In his first start, he couldn’t get comfortable with it and was messing with it right after giving up a big homerun to Branyan (I have a photo of him doing this from my Diamond Club seat). Last night, during the warmups (I was in the ’pen this time) he was messing with the damn thing… then he goes out and serves up 5 runs in a jiffy.
Get a cup that fits and doesn’t pinch your legs, man. He looks uncomfortable and I think it is an equipment issue.
FWIW.

and this now makes me think of John Candy in “Planes Trains and Automobiles” : “Larry Bird doesn’t do as much ball-handling in one night as you do in an hour!”
