Hot Dog! Bartolo Colon Smothers Angels

Final Score in Anaheim: White Sox 4, Angels 2

The Angels were stymied on Tuesday by an old friend. Bartolo Colon pitched like Cy Young as he shut down an already-stagnant Angels offense. Colon's only blemish was allowing a solo HR to Bobby Abreu, the first homer as an Angel for the veteran outfielder.

Joe Saunders pitched well for the Angels but allowed two homeruns on identical pitches to Jayson Nix as well as a run-scoring single to Paul Konerko in between.

Torii Hunter also homered for the Angels in the 9th inning, a little too little, a little too late, as Hunter was tagged out trying to take 3B on a long Kendry Morales fly out in the 2nd inning. Of course, the Angels broadcast of the game was not of the game, it was of an astronaut telling Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc how to poop in space. The telecast also featured Fox Sports West broadcaster Steve Physioc leering over a young boy eating a hot dog. It was downright creepy. It lasted for almost two complete halves of an inning. The lingering Fox Sports West shots of just some kid chomping on a dog at the park made Angel fans lose their appetite, and the team did nothing to help their supporters get it back.

At least Bartolo Colon still looks as well-fed as ever.

guess im glad I missed this one........
How about all of the above

I don’t know which is worse – losing or having to listen to Physioc blather on and on.

phyz should be the fail.... cause I really can't pick one of the above.
Naps

0 – 4 and looked bad all day. The error to center early set a bad tone. Plus the last out of the game.

Let's just hope Texas loses

Lost the series. Bummer. Let’s make sure no brooms are used tomorrow.

Speed Boat

is that Dondo in the bottom right?? :)
donod 2008 maybe

that version could walk on water

sooo...

Vlad kills our offense, huh?

i missed this one, but by the box score, it looks like Saunders pitched a pretty good game.

Personally I voted Morales

made me sick seeing him take 3-1 and 2-0 pitches to LF. He’s in there for extra base hits. He’s not going to hit all that many extra base hits there.

Can someone tell the Angels hitters that the opposite field will still be there when 2 strikes rolls around.

Joe Mauer has been killing it to opposite field on all counts all year
he's been killing the ball period.......
Joe Mauer was also the number 1 pick overall in the country

How many of those guys to the Angels have?

Question to everyone

Would you ever want a 60 win season to claim a Mauer-like hitter or Strasburg- pitcher?

Nope
No guarantee that it happens in a year with a good draft
you dont have to be a crappy team to get one of those guys............

just have good scouts.

Jared Weaver

Picked 14 and was the #1 player in the draft.

if the Angels don't make the playoffs then they might as well lose as many as possible

whatever makes them the better team going forward. Of course it’d be hard to endure but if the Angels didn’t have a crappy 2000 then they never would have had Troy Glaus and they never win the World Series.

Ny point is what does the second strike have to do with hitting it to opposite field
most players have a much higher SLG % pulling the ball

I mean can you ever remember Morales hitting an opposite field homer????

With no strikes, unless it’s a pitch you can turn on then it’s not a bad idea to just let it go. Like Abreu does. He’ll swing at a pitch with no strikes, but when he does, it sure as heck isn’t to doink one in in front of the LF.

Ah gotcha

I am guessing it is more dictated by pitch location and the batters ability to identify it. Pitches that are good for one are not good for the other

If they see a good pitch to drive the opposite way, it is not a bad move either.

But no I have not seen him hit an opposite homer

hauldog

exactly, I’m not saying hitters should never go the opposite field with no strikes just that the Angels do it far to often.

if you want to see a spray chart show what I’m saying do this. Go to the following website.

http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_hitting_chart.jsp?c_id=ana&playerID=116338&statType=1

Go to the 2008 season so you see more hits. And click on “Go”

First select doubles, notice how they are mostly grouped to LF. Then select Homers, againt mostly to LF, then select Flyouts, notice how the vast majority of his flyouts are to RF and CF.

I’m certainly not a hitting instructor, but it sure seems like when Torii when he hits the ball to RF it’s an out a lot more often than when he hits it to LF. Maybe part of the reason Torii is owning it up this year is because he’s trying to hit more homers and therefore is getting away from the go with the pitch stuff Hacker seems to love. Doesn’t it seem like he has a lot more hits to the 5.5 hole than last year too?

MH I can agree with most of what you say.

I like when somebody makes good points. With that said, you chose Torii Hunter to make your example. I don’t know why you did that, because you were talking about Morales to start the whole thing. Torii has been a pull hitter for the last 5 years, but early in his career he went the other way a lot. The hitter needs to know his style, I don’t think you are wrong about the counts and the TYPE of swing Morales put on the ball. I don’t mind seeing a ball hit the other way if you put a 3-0 swing on it. If you really look at the swing then you can see the Angels are opening their front shoulders and dropping their hands on inside pitches. That is what gives you those weak pop-ups to the oppo field.

I'll give a non-pull hitter then

Look at Howie Kendrick at Angel Stadium in 08. This is really interesting to me. It shows that he didn’t make EVEN ONE out to LF. He hit lots of doubles and singles to LF but not one out. When you look at RF he hit a TON of flyballs with only limited success. I have no idea how Hacker can look at that data and spew stuff like Howie is hot when he’s going right center.

I count 23 flyouts to RF

with only 3 doubles.

Going to center he has 8 flyouts but 4 doubles and a homer

Going to Left he has 6 doubles with NO OUTS.

Personally I find it absurd that a guy that is known coming up through the minors for having one of the fastest swings around, is pretty much using RF exclusively when he has success going to LF when he does go that way.

It will be nice to have Vlad back

when he gets back. Nap needs to snap out of it quick. It would be great to have all these guys hitting at once. It will happen soon I think.

Scot Shields shut down to the DL.

Rich Thompson just called up.

ahhh you beat me to it
BREAKING NEWS

via Angels Live:

Scot Shields was just placed on the DL (15 day, i assume). Thompson up

beat ya to it! Ha Ha
crap

ash must be happy!

It will be fun to see Rich back for a while. Though he is really no better than anybody else in the pen.
Gulp

Knowing that we have (had?) Loux and Palmer in the pen, that is a very scary statement…..

This team needs an enema

phoooooo!!!!!!!!!!

they just got a Colon-ic
7-3 rangers

bottom 8th. yikes

what a waste of great seats tonight

i got a good view just behind home plate. it was beautiful seeing bobby’s first homer. but now i see why shieldsy was placed on DL. he is just WAY out of it physically and mentally. he came in to get one out if i remember correctly. during his warmups i swear he bounced like 3 or 4 of them and then he thought naps was going to throw it down to 2B after the last toss. he literally turned his back waiting for that throw down then realized what part of the game it was as there were runners on base.

i pray this stint can fix him. we have not gotten any breaks either. line outs and bad bounces everywhere….the home plate ump stunk it up as well. no sweep tomorrow.

there weren't runners on base

not until he walked Ramirez.
I can’t believe they walked that guy 3 times in one game, kid was hitting in the .220s before he came to Anaheim.

you're right

he just looked out of sorts, thank goodness he did get the one out. ramirez…wow, he was killing us with his glove too.

BRING BACK ROBB QUINLAN!

He was the magic in the lineup that led to offensive success. ok, maybe not.
